In this episode, I host a dialogue between Brad Warner, Zen teacher, Youtuber, and best-selling author of “Hardcore Zen”; and Shozan Jack Haubner, ex-Zen Monk, Youtuber, and prize winning author of the memoir “Zen Confidential: Confessions of a Wayward Monk”. Brad and Jack explore their own journeys as writers, the humorous and confessional elements in their work, and the complications of writing about real life events that involve other people. Brad and Jack reflect on what they see as the politicisation of American Zen, describe how religious institutions can compromise their principles when faced with financial and political pressure, and explain their own efforts on Youtube and elsewhere to challenge hegemony and encourage a return to essential Zen. Brad and Jack also discuss facing criticism as public figures, consider some of their more controversial videos and views, and reveal how they stay centred amidst the polarising forces of today's internet and social media world. … Video version: https://www.guruviking.com/podcast/ep271-zen-confessions-brad-warner-shozan-jack-haubner Also available on Youtube, iTunes, & Spotify – search ‘Guru Viking Podcast'. … Topics include: 00:00 - Intro 01:10 - Radical self disclosure 02:49 - Why Brad began writing about Zen 05:59 - Hardcore Zen and success 06:48 - Noah Levine's Dharma Punx 07:50 - Jack's initial Zen writing 10:43 - Complications of being ordained 12:34 - When people find out 13:40 - Protecting others' identity 16:29 - Compromise thru affiliation with Zen organisations 18:08 - Selling meditation as a product 21:03 - Austrian Zen and hard retreat 22:44 - Mainstream mindfulness 23:37 - Wearing Zen robes 24:55 - Why Brad stopped teaching in the USA 25:45 - Hostility in NYC 27:50 - Zen apprenticeship and closing the doors 30:53 - Boomer hippy ideals vs real Zen 31:45 - US Zen hegemony 35:11 - Politicised Zen and 80s televangelists 36:20 - Bullying and fixed views 37:25 - Sasaki Roshi's scandal and encounters with boutique Zen teachers 39:02 - Politicisation of US Zen 41:07 - Financial pressure and running an institution 44:59 - Brad on Sasaki Roshi 47:16 - Sweeping Zen 48:08 - Challenging socio-political trends in American Zen 50:08 - Hijacking Zen 56:06 - The Jack Kornfield problem 59:20 - Attacked from both sides 01:01:16 - Right wing Zen 01:03:54 - Demonising the other side and facing your shadow 01:09:40 - Abuse and pushing your buttons 01:12:10 - Being too nice 01:13:28 - Self-justification 01:14:57 - Co-opting Zen 01:16:09 - Sasaki beats a lazy student 01:19:06 - The danger of Zen practice 01:23:06 - Patron priest corruption 01:24:58 - Dealing with negative feedback on social media 01:33:24 - Internet radicalisation and keeping your head 01:38:52 - Watching your equilibrium 01:39:49 - Jordan Peterson vs Zen 01:43:07 - Teachings vs entertainment 01:46:00 - Why Rinzai is evil and Soto sucks Previous episode with Brad Warner: - www.guruviking.com/podcast/155-hardcore-zen-brad-warner Previous episodes with Shozan Jack Haubner: - https://www.guruviking.com/search?q=haubner … To find out more about Brad Warner, visit: - http://hardcorezen.info/ - https://www.youtube.com/c/HardcoreZen To find our more about Shozan Jack Haubner, visit: - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt9Q74t3o7AUCJ_bKTc5CgA … For more interviews, videos, and more visit: - https://www.guruviking.com Music ‘Deva Dasi' by Steve James

Meditation blurs the definition of success. In fact, it can even negate success altogether. It just is what it is, it is not measured on a scale. 2. Buddhism is meditation. What the Buddha taught was meditation. Not everyone would agree with that statement, but teaching Buddhism without meditation doesn't stay true to its founding principles. 3. The other side of nothing is a space where you negate yourself. It is understanding yourself as an illusion. It is thinking of yourself as not something that belongs to you, but belongs to everything. 4. Only think of Karma in relation to yourself. Try not to look at the big picture too much. Get involved in what you can influence. In particular, the Buddhist concept of nonduality—the realization that everything in the Universe forms a single, integrated whole—is especially difficult to grasp. In The Other Side of Nothing, Zen teacher Brad Warner untangles the mystery and explains nonduality in plain English. To Warner, this is not just a philosophical problem: Nonduality forms the bedrock of Zen ethics, and once we comprehend it, many of the perplexing aspects of Zen suddenly make sense.Drawing on decades of Zen practice, he traces the interlocking relationship between Zen metaphysics and ethics, showing how a true understanding of reality—and the ultimate unity of all things—instills in us a sense of responsibility for the welfare of all beings. When we realize that our feeling of separateness from others is illusory, we have no desire to harm any creature. Warner ultimately presents an expansive overview of the Zen ethos that will give beginners and experts alike a deeper understanding of one of the world's enduring spiritual traditions.

On this episode I am joined by not just one, but two special guests: With me in my studio was my buddy Leandro (in fact many of my videos are inspired by our endless discussions on philosophy and living a good life!), who had a little fanboy moment because we got to chat with one of his long-time heroes, Brad Warner. Brad is the founder of the Soto Zen Meditation Center in LA as well as a punk rocker, ordained monk, and creator of monster movies. He is also the author of Hardcore Zen and many other books on Zen practice, monsters, and death, so we had a great time diving deep into sitting still and doing nothing! Max Out Insights: A committed spiritual practice is like putting yourself in jail - you give up your freedom to acquire discipline Emotional states are like the weather - they come and go all the time. When you stop attaching to and owning your emotions, they lose their control over you What makes happiness go away is trying to hold onto it The pursuit of enlightenment has no finish line Sports and music can be a great substitute for meditation to get into the present moment It`s the attachment to outcomes that causes much of human suffering Instead of arguing to win, argue to find the truth. That way, losing is actually a good thing because it means you learnt a new/better perspective Your reason for meditation is the thing that makes you sit down, but once you do sit down you need to let go of that Zazen is good for nothing - you`re not trying to do something with it, just be present and do what you do completely Often, people become more stressed through meditation because it makes the darker parts of your mind reveal themselves. This is a natural process of diving deeper into your own psyche, but can be difficult to handle when it comes as a surprise Society makes us believe that we need to be happy all the time, which makes us avoid pain, sadness, and suffering When you limit your access to distraction, you free up your time and energy to focus on the things that matter Suffering is often connected with the sense of self: “I am bad/useless/incapable etc.” Question all your beliefs and judgements in regards to yourself and others Max Out Quotes: “If you want to have a happy life, you have to establish some kind of discipline. If you have too much of what people call freedom, life becomes chaotic.” “When people realize that the thing they`re attached to is an illusion, they often freak out and stop the practice.” “You can`t contribute to the world if you`re not balanced yourself.” “Just try to make a small difference.” “Do the thing you`re doing, but don`t concern yourself with the outcomes. Do it as purely as possible.”

Brad Warner talks about his new book Letters To A Dead Friend About Zen The night that best selling author and Zen teacher Brad Warner learned that his childhood friend Marky had died of cancer at the age of forty-eight, he had just arrived in Hamburg. Germany where he was scheduled to give a talk to a group of Zen students. It was the last thing he felt like doing. Instead. Warner was thinking about all of the things he never said to his friend since topics like spirituality and meditation didn't exactly fit the passion for punk rock the had shared since they were young As Brad continued his teaching tour through Europe, he began writing out all of the things he wished he has said to Marky before he died. The result is an enlightening and light-hearted book about the concepts of Zen. We Talk about What is BuddhismAttachment and the BuddhistThe ten Buddhist preceptsWhat is spiritual bypassingThe four noble truthsThe concept of KarmaThe different "flavors" of BuddhismThe bottomless well of misery and angerThe importance of sitting ZazenThe Noble eightfold path Brad Warner is the author of numerous books including It Came From Beyond Zen, Don't Be a Jerk, and Hardcore Zen. I didn't include a letter to Marky about the Heart Sutra in Letters to a Dead Friend About Zen because I had written a chapter about it in my first book, Hardcore Zen. But the Heart Sutra is probably the most important sutra for Zen Buddhists. So I wrote Marky a letter about the Heart Sutra for this episode and presented it in America's Heartland, Cleveland, Ohio.

Brad Warner – Letters to a Dead Friend About ZenAired Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at 5:00 PM PST / 8:00 PM ESTMany of us have experienced the loss of a friend, perhaps someone we have known since childhood. When our life paths have been divergent and communication of those paths are not shared, we might reflect on a missed opportunity to have exchanged these ideas and insights and perhaps grown through the exchange. What would you do if you wanted to reach out and have a conversation or even write a letter to someone no longer in this life? What would you share and in this sharing, would you find some solace, completion or even a deeper understanding of the path you chose? My guest this week on Destination Unlimited, best-selling author and Zen teacher Brad Warner, had this very experience. When word reached him that his childhood friend, Marky, had died of cancer at age 48, Brad thought of all the things he never said to his friend and began writing them down in a series of “letters”.Brad Warner is the author of It Came from Beyond Zen, Don’t be a Jerk and Hardcore Zen. Brad Warner is the author of six books, including the critically acclaimed Hardcore Zen: Punk Rock, Monster Movies and the Truth About Reality. This book put Brad on the map in the Buddhist community because of its no-nonsense, plainspoken - and maybe even outspoken - approach to zen, meditation and the nature of individual reality. In fact, Hardcore Zen actually begins with these words: “Nothing is sacred. Doubt - in everything - is absolutely essential. Everything, no matter how great, how fundamental, how beautiful or important it is, must be questioned.” So you know that yours truly - what, with my plainspoken mantra recited at the end of each episode - you know that this is right up my anti-dogmatic, anti-authoritative alley.   PATREON EXTENSION Listen at patreon.com/occulture Psychedelics in Buddhism & drug-based spirituality Encountering demons during meditation Conspiracy thinking The self image as a useful fiction Teaching Buddhism in the same way you teach art “From birth to death, it’s just like this”   RESOURCES Hardcore Zen on IndieBound Hardcore Zen on Amazon Brad’s website Brad on Facebook Brad on Twitter Brad on Instagram Brad on YouTube   DONATE If recurring monthly support via Patreon isn’t your thing, we do accept one time-donations via PayPal, Bitcoin, Ethereum and Ripple. This week on Relationships 2.0 my guest is Brad Warner author of It Came From Beyond Zen: More Practical Advice from Dogen, Japan's Greatest Zen Master About the book: Vol. 2 of Brad Warner’s Radical but Reverent Paraphrasing of Dogen’s Treasury of the True Dharma Eye In Japan in 1253, one of the great thinkers of his time died — and the world barely noticed. That man was the Zen monk Eihei Dogen. For centuries his main work, Shobogenzo, languished in obscurity, locked away in remote monasteries until scholars rediscovered it in the twentieth century. What took so long? In Brad Warner’s view, Dogen was too ahead of his time to find an appreciative audience. To bring Dogen’s work to a bigger readership, Warner began paraphrasing Shobogenzo, recasting it in simple, everyday language. The first part of this project resulted in Don’t Be a Jerk, and now Warner presents this second volume, It Came from Beyond Zen! Once again, Warner uses wry humor and incisive commentary to bridge the gap between past and present, making Dogen’s words clearer and more relevant than ever before. About the author: Ordained as a Soto Zen priest, Brad Warner is also a punk bassist, filmmaker, and blogger. He is the founder of Angel City Zen Center in Los Angeles and the author of Hardcore Zen, Sit Down and Shut Up, and several other books about Zen Buddhism. His writing appears on SuicideGirls.com and in Lion’s Roar, Tricycle, Buddhadharma, and Alternative Press. He lives in Los Angeles.

Bio Noah Levine, author of Dharma Punx, Against The Stream, The Heart of the Revolution and Refuge Recovery, is a Buddhist teacher, author and counselor. He has created a Buddhist approach to addiction recovery called Refuge Recovery, that includes peer lead meetings as well as a professional treatment center. He is also the founding teacher of Against the Stream Buddhist Meditation Society, with centers in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Nashville and over 20 affiliated groups around North America. He teaches meditation classes, workshops and retreats internationally. Noah holds a Masters degree in counseling psychology and lives in Los Angeles.   Episode Outline:   • Dharma Punk – Noah talks about his experience with addiction and how it led him to the Buddhist Path.   • A Community Effort – Noah revisits the origins of Refuge Recovery and shares about all of the preparation that went into the endeavor.   • Refuge Recovery –In the Refuge Recovery book, Noah writes, “Refuge Recovery is a practice, a process, a set of tools, a treatment, and a path to healing addiction and the suffering caused by addiction.” Which we discuss.   • Addiction Creates Suffering – Noah and I explore The Four Truths of recovery, beginning with the First Truth, which is, addiction creates suffering. In Refuge Recovery, Noah writes, “This is not a philosophy. It is a practice; it demands action. We must understand, acknowledge, admit, and take this action by writing and sharing an in-depth and detailed inventory of the suffering we have experienced in association with our addictions.” Can you expand on that?   • The Cause of Addiction Is Repetitive Craving – The Second Truth of recovery is that the cause of addiction is repetitive craving. In Refuge Recovery Noah writes, “We have come to understand that all forms of addiction have their roots in the natural human tendency to crave for life to be more pleasurable and less painful than it actually is. The addict is not at fault for the root causes and conditions that lead to addiction, only for the habitual reactive patterns that perpetuate it.” Which again, we discuss.   • Recovery Is Possible – The Third Truth of recovery is that recovery is possible. In Refuge Recovery Noah writes write, “Freedom from the suffering caused by addiction is attainable, if we are ready and willing to take responsibility for our actions and to follow the Eightfold Path. As you enter this process and attend group meetings, you will connect with many others who have also suffered the consequences of addiction and are now recovering. Allow the group to inspire you and to show the possibilities of recovery, while also making room for the imperfections of some of the individuals within the group.”   • The Path To Recovery – So The Four Noble Truths sets out the way, the Eightfold Path, that leads to the end of suffering and is composed of eight factors, which Noah talks about.   • Buddhist Atheist – Noah and I discuss an interesting conversation we recently had about God in relation to recovery and relapse.   • Moving Forward – Noah talks about the current and future state of Refuge Recovery.   Recommendations:   Refuge Recovery Website   Against The Stream Website   Noah’s Book: Refuge Recovery, Dharma Punx, Against The Stream, The Heart of the Revolution   Other Books: Indie Spiritualist by Chris Grosso (Foreword by Noah Levine), Hardcore Zen by Brad Warner

Welcome to the 18th episode of Pulpit To Pew. Reverend Beverly Gibson and Johnny Gwin weigh many topics, including the pervasive and addictive nature of technology in our current society as well as the importance of escaping that technology. They also discuss the idea of taking inventory and analyzing the illusions and mindsets (shackles) that can block us from understanding others, positively moving forward and staying focused on your mission. Bonus: Reverend Gibson shares that see is not a "Goody Two Shoes". Questions: > Do we have the freedom to shatter those illusions and perspectives that distract us from our gifts, relationships with others and God? > What shackles do you have in your life? > How can I shatter my shackles and move forward on the right path? > How do I want others to see? > Are we willing to be brave enough to "break our shackles" and follow Jesus, now? Readings: 2 Kings 2:1-2, 6-14 Galatians 5:1,13-25 Luke 9:51-62 What you will hear: > There may be some things we are shackled to that might be leading us on a path that we shouldn't be on. > Distancing yourself from devices and perceptions that shackle and distract you from your gifts and your true path. > Rigid perspectives & mindsets can harm us and cloud the truth > The dangers of unexamined assumptions > How your occupation and interests shape the way you see the world > The "grooves" of our lives > Confronting your illusions > Elijah & Elisha lesson explained > Paul's letter to the Galatians explained > Flesh vs. the fruit of the Spirit > The Vulcan view of diversity > Letting go of my perspectives and mindsets > Iceberg analogy of what people know and see > Watch out for the manipulators in the world > Hardcore Zen book reference - "Question everything and everyone" > The hypocrisy of punk rock conformity > Toni Morrison - Claiming the permission to succeed > The importance of compassion and empathy with relationships > Explanation of "anyone that looks back can not fit in the Kingdom of God"   What do you think about Pulpit To Pew? For Life on Purpose Episode #48, my guest is Zen teacher and author Brad Warner, who is also a punk bassist, filmmaker, Japanese-monster-movie marketer, and popular blogger. Brad joined me for a great conversation about his new book Don’t Be a Jerk: And Other Practical Advice from Dōgen, Japan’s Greatest Zen Master (New World Library), in which he paraphrases Dōgen’s work for modern times in his trademark style that readers have come to know and love, bringing his wisdom on topics like feminism, reincarnation, and the debate between science and religion to the forefront. We also discuss Dōgen's great work The Shōbōgenzō, Brad's life story, a brief history of Zen, and philosophical topics such as the notions of "no self", "not knowing", and the question of why we need to practice, if as the Buddha says, "We are all perfect just as we are."About: Brad Warner is an ordained Zen teacher and author of the books There Is No God And He Is Always With You (2013), Sex Sin and Zen (2010), Zen Wrapped in Karma Dipped in Chocolate (2009), Sit Down and Shut Up (2007) and Hardcore Zen (2004). He’s also a writer for the Suicide Girls website, bass player for the hardcore punk rock group 0DFx (aka Zero Defex), star of the movies “Shoplifting From American Apparel” and “Zombie Bounty Hunter M.D.,” director of the film “Cleveland’s Screaming!” and former vice president of the US branch of the company founded by the man who created Godzilla.Born in Hamilton, Ohio in 1964, in 1972, Brad’s family relocated to Nairobi, Kenya. When he returned three years later, nothing about rural Ohio seemed quite the same anymore. In 1982, Brad joined 0DFx (Zero Defex), famous for an eighteen-second burst of noise titled “Drop the A-Bomb On Me.” 0DFx recently reunited and has a new CD out. While still playing hardcore punk, Brad became involved in Zen Buddhism. The realistic, no BS philosophy reminded him of the attitude the punks took towards music. He made it to Japan in 1993 where he began studying the philosophy with an iconoclastic rebel Zen Master named Gudo Nishijima. After a few years, Nishijima decided to make Brad his successor as a teacher of Zen.To learn more about Brad and his work, visit: http://hardcorezen.info/.
