As usual there are spoilers ahead! For the full show notes without character limits you can head to the website here. You can follow the podcast on Instagram and Threads although I am also trying to join in on BlueSky a bit. (It's a bit weird though.) Description Godzilla was released in 1954 in Japan it has gone on to become one of the longest standing movie franchises and began the Kaiju film tradition. Directed by Ishiro Honda, produced by Tomoyuki Tanaka with special effects my Eiji Tsuburaya. It was inspired in part by the 1933 King Kong and The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms from the year before.A big difference compared to US 1950s sci-fi films dealing with nuclear themes is the Japanese perspective. The film wasn't officially released in the US until 2004 but the US re-edit Godzilla: King of the Monsters! (1956) brought Godzilla to a global audience. My absolutely wonderful guests share their insights on this cinematic masterpiece. The Experts The wonderful Lisa Yaszek is Regents' Professor of Science Fiction Studies at Georgia Tech. She has written/edited numerous books on science fiction. Yuki Miyamoto is Professor of Religious Studies and Director of the Humanities Center at DePaul University. Her work focuses on the ethics around nuclear discourse. The next film we will be covering is the 1956 Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The film is available to buy and rent on many outlets and even some free with ads streaming platforms. You can check the Just Watch website to see where its available in your region. We will (as usual) be spending some time speaking about the sequels so it might be worth watching the 1978 version as it is considered the best version by many! I loved it but the original holds a very special place in my heart so it will not be replaced by a copy. The episode hasn't been recorded yet but the plan is also to speak a little about the 1953 film Invaders from Mars that has many similar themes.
Zach and Rashmi encounter the Mightiest Monster In All Creation as they navigate with the delight the world of Ishirō Honda's 1961 kaiju masterstroke, MOSURA aka MOTHRA! Thrill to all the films kaiju splendor as the innovations of Eiji Tsuburaya continue to delight, the ambitions and passions of Honda are praised, and the experience of big screen monsters from Japan provide excitement and education!

THE HUMAN FLY (1957). Stay tuned for loving dive into the world of Visual Effects and how the techniques spread through the country and how the films managed to help spark a flame of spectacle filmmaking that would grow even bigger over time.

S2E2 Psychedelic Kaiju w/ War of the Gargantuas (1966) & Matango (1963) Kevin Moss from the Junk Food Dinner podcast joins Cory and Bob for the most wigged-out Japanese monster movies ever to come out of Toho Studios. First, it's the good Brown Gargantua vs. the evil Green Gargantua in a battle of land and sea elemental forces in the appropriately titled WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS (1966), an epic that rattled the minds of everyone from Guillermo del Toro to Tim Burton to friggin' Brad Pitt (who gushed about it once during The Oscars). It's also a favorite of Mark Mothersbaugh of DEVO, who used to close out their set with "The Words Get Stuck in My Throat," the baffling-yet-catchy pop song that's ruined by Green Gargantua in the middle of the movie. Watch for it. The Gargantuas are about half the size of Godzilla or Rodan, and they don't have tails, so they move fast and hurl tanks like they're baseballs. Starring a decidedly unimpressed Russ Tamblyn from the original WEST SIDE STORY and the lovely Kumi Mizuno. Things get even weirder with our second feature, MATANGO (1963) aka ATTACK OF THE MUSHROOM PEOPLE. Seven stranded castaways (or maybe a few more) are shipwrecked on an island where the only thing to eat are mutated mushrooms with the power to transform you into creepy toadstool creatures. It's kaiju meets full-on body horror. Kumi Mizuno is back for this one along with Yoshio Tsuchiya and Akira Kubo. Both of our films also feature the artistry of Gojira director Ishiro Honda and special effects wizard Eiji Tsuburaya, which makes Honda the most featured director on OLD MOVIES FOR YOUNG STONERS of all time, since we profiled his ALL MONSTERS ATTACK (1969) in Season One, Episode Six. We haven't even done Orson Welles or Fritz Lang movies yet, but we've featured three Ishiro Honda movies. Priorities! Big thanks to Kevin Moss for joining us. His indispensable JUNK FOOD DINNER podcast is streaming on Apple Podcasts and your favorite podcast app. You can learn more about it at junkfooddinner.com. All of Bob's Ishiro Honda knowledge in this ep comes from the excellent book, "Ishiro Honda: A Life in Film from Godzilla to Kurosawa" by Steve Ryfle and Ed Godziszewski. Bob purchased the book from MZS.press, the bookstore run by movie and TV critic Matt Zoller Seitz out of his home. Highly recommended.

A special gathering of the podcast (Jason, Drew, Julia and Jamie) discusses the 1956 film Rodan LIVE at the 2022 AnimeFest in Dallas. Rodan (Japanese: 空の大怪獣 ラドン, Hepburn: Sora no Daikaijū Radon, lit. 'Giant Monster of the Sky Rodan') is a 1956 Japanese kaiju film directed by Ishirō Honda, with special effects by Eiji Tsuburaya. Produced and distributed by Toho Studios, it was Toho's first kaiju film to be shot in color, and is one of several giant monster films that found an audience outside Japan. The film stars Kenji Sahara and Yumi Shirakawa. In the United States, it was released in 1957 as Rodan! The Flying Monster!
Chris and Alex take their first visit to the Japanese kaiju genre for Episode 102 of the podcast thanks to Toho studio's 1961 feature Mothra (Ishirō Honda, 1961), a film that kickstarted the longstanding Mothra monster movie franchise. Joining them to discuss the history and legacy of Japanese cinema's famous winged creature is Alex Davidson, cinema curator at the Barbican Theatre who also writes on film for the BFI and beyond, with a specialism is queer cinema and television. To tie in with the Barbican's screening of Mothra on August 24th 2022 as part of their Outdoor Cinema series, the trio reflect on the genesis of Mothra as a character and its importance to twentieth-century Japanese monster cinema; the codes and conventions of the kaiju film, and connections to Japan's postwar national trauma following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki; distinctions between revenge and rampage that structure Mothra narratives; allegories of modernity that recur across supernatural fables; the fluctuating scales of the film's practical VFX imagery (from superimpositions and forced perspectives to models and miniatures) all directed by Eiji Tsuburaya; the political stakes of its fictional setting of Rolisica that combines East Asian and European influences; and what director Ishirō Honda has to say about science, finance, technology, and soft economic power through both Mothra's reign of terror and the character's desire to ‘protect.' **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo**
"I was grinning like an idiot." - Matt Levine, co-host of Camp Kaiju. So that's it. Review over. What more could we possibly have to say about Ishiro Honda's direction, Eiji Tsuburaya's special effects, or Akira Ifukube's score? Thanks for the support, friends. We're just getting started. A two-episode anime OVA titled Super Atragon, based on the same novels, was produced by Phoenix Entertainment in 1995.
Brad Warner was born in Ohio in 1964. In 1983 he met Zen teacher Tim McCarthy and began his study of Zen while he was still the bass player of the hardcore punk band Zero Defex, whose big hit was the eighteen-second masterpiece "Drop the A-Bomb on Me!" In the 1980s he released five albums of psychedelic rock under the band name Dimentia 13 (that's the way he spelled it), though Dimentia 13 was often a one-man band with Brad playing all the instruments. In 1993 he moved to Japan, where he landed a job with Tsuburaya Productions, the company founded by Eiji Tsuburaya, the man who created Godzilla. The following year Brad met Gudo Nishijima Roshi, who ordained him as a Zen monk and made him his dharma heir in 2000. He has written several books and just released a new one titled "The Other Side of Nothing: The Zen Ethics of Time, Space, and Being ". Toho tries their hand another new giant monster movie, but with the marked improvements of seasoned actors and color film stock. Director Ishiro Honda is back, and so are Akira Ifukube and Eiji Tsuburaya, completing the dream team from 1954’s ‘Godzilla’. Rodan is a spectacular achievement in the art of miniatures and monster story-telling, and introduces us to a vibrant world of horrific prehistoric bugs and jet speed dinosaurs. Long before the South Korean film industry was putting out groundbreaking and critically beloved flicks like The Host and Parasite, they bestowed upon the world such epic daikaiju dumpster fires as Yongary, Monster from the Deep (1967) and War of the God Monsters (1985). The question isn't if the "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh and "The Mayor of Toku Toy Town" Jay Key enjoyed these two movies - it's if they survived them. Though Yongary's historical significance on the Korean film world is legitimate and undeniable, it provides little shelter from itchy monster dances, rectal bleeding, poorly hidden flame throwers, and thinly veiled metaphors regarding South Korea's geo-political views following the Korean War. It helps redefine the word "boring". But less than twenty years later, the world was treated to what can only be described as the cinematic interpretation of insanity in its purest form. Stock footage Tsuburaya monsters described as "dinosaurs". Bones that may or may not cause children to get sick. Uncomfortable emotional and physical abuse. A sociopathic pre-teen. And that baby scene...oh, that baby scene. Maybe there was a reason this film was lost. In addition to traversing the landscape of South Korean kaiju, Jake and Jay discuss some hot news items such as the approaching Godzilla Day and the two huge announcements - the official Toho short, Godzilla vs. Hedorah (in honor of Hedorah's 50th anniversary), and Super7's tease of their next reveal (the first wave of Ultimates, maybe?). The two hosts also compare pick-ups; Jake flexes his cute credentials with a "pumpkin" Negora and LitGodzi Space Godzilla cup...Jay battles back with a cool MaxToyCo Ultraman and a set of Eiji Tsuburaya 100th anniversary finger puppets from Yutaka.
It's October - which means we are contractually allowed to venture away from classic kaiju and into the realm of human-sized monsters and horror! But we won't stray too far, as we are staying with Toho and the 1963 classic, Matango (aka Attack of the Mushroom People)! This is an in-depth conversation on the genre-bending film based on the 1907 William H. Hodgson short story, The Voice in the Night, and brought to life by a "who's who" of Toho legends - Ishiro Honda, Tomoyuki Tanaka, Eiji Tsuburaya, Hiroshi Koizumi, Akira Kubo, Kumi Mizuno, Yoshio Tsuchiya, and many more! But how did the hallowed horror historian, Jacob Walsh, feel about this foray into early Japanese body horror? Is he even awake yet after his whirlwind trip to New York Comic-Con? Also on the episode, Jake and Jay review their recent sofubi pick-ups that included a nice array of subjects - from the custom cat kaiju, Negora, to the beautiful Shobijin to yet another Titanosaurus for Jay's collection. Fire up the maser cannons, gas up the Moonlight SY-3, and polish your space titanium, because it's time to get a little kaijuontheside with YHS on Monster Island!

March of the Monsters month at Catching Up On Cinema continues with a review of Ishiro Honda's groundbreaking daikaiju masterpiece, Gojira (1954)! A grim, allegorical tale of the horrors of nuclear weapons from a uniquely Japanese perspective, the film is often mistakenly thought of as just another dime a dozen atomic age B-movie, largely due to it's slightly inferior repackaging in the form of the recut, Godzilla, King of the Monsters (1956). Stunningly photographed, and ably acted, the film is nevertheless an astounding piece of sci-fi horror that still packs a punch when digested with proper historical context. Directed by Ishiro Honda, produced by Tomoyuki Tanaka, with effects by Eiji Tsuburaya, musical score by Akira Ifukube, and Haruo Nakajima donning the 220 lbs Godzilla suit, the film represents the film assemblage of what could easily be considered the "Dream Team" of tokusatsu craftsmen.

Hello. kaiju lovers! The end has come…for MIFV's first season, that is. It was supposed to be an epic episode on Godzilla vs. Kong…but instead Nathan is joined by Matt and Gratton from the “Giant Monster Ben Shapiro,” er, “BS” podcast to discuss Space Amoeba (aka Yog, Monster from Space), a weird lesser classic from the Toho tokusatsu library. Released in 1970, it marked a shift in the Showa era for Toho films. This was the year special effects wizard Eiji Tsuburaya died, the studio contract system was discontinued in Japan, and Ishiro Honda left Toho, just to name a few big changes. Jet Jaguar hung out with the intrepid Jimmy From NASA in the producer booth to act as a “dump button” in case the GMBS boys went full-tilt HBO on a family show. They along with Nathan discuss the film's quirky characters and plot, its three well-executed but almost forgotten monsters, and the wonders of the “Weedmobile” before Jimmy is called away to quell a rowdy Godzilla and Kong with his newly rebuilt Mechani-Kong. That goes about as well as you'd expect, so Nathan, Matt, and Gratton have to pilot another giant robot to save his intrepidness. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, kaiju lovers! Read Jimmy's Notes on this episode. Listen to Matt and Gratton's episode on Space Amoeba. The prologue and epilogue were written by Nathan Marchand. This episode features sound effects sourced from www.FreeSound.org, Brand Name Audio, and the Pipeworks/Atari Godzilla video games. The music tracks heard in this episode are “Global Defense Force: Moguera” by Heavy Melody Music (from the Godzilla Unleashed OST) and “King Kong 2 – Main Theme (Metal Cover)” by Sharp Rain Music. On this week's Discuss All Monsters we have another brief episode with our discussion on 1963's Atragon, a sort of turning point in the creative powers behind Toho's monster movies thus far. We talk about the movie's stance on nationalism and the way out-of-touch leaders try to halt progress as well as some of its shortcomings on that same issue. We also talk specifically about Eiji Tsuburaya and how maybe some of his ambitions started to outpace what he could do with Toho leading to him opening his own studio. Tune in next time for MOTHRA VS GODZILLA!
Two legends collide in the third episode of SQUADZILLA! With a new Godzilla vs Kong film on the horizon, what better time to take a look at the original film that set the crossover precedent? Packed with interesting history, and the legendary effects director Eiji Tsuburaya taking the reigns and moving the series in a more campy direction that persisted for decades, the original Kong vs Godzilla is as entertaining as it is pivotal in the canon of the series. _______ Squadzilla is a podcast where two life long Godzilla fans, JaxBlade and Tom Oliver, indoctrinate a newcomer to the franchise, Saberspark, by forcing him to watch every single Godzilla film yet released in sequential order, until he's as obsessed as they are. Witness the birth of a fanboy in real time, perhaps become one yourself, and have some laughs along the way as no stone is left unturned, and no maser tank is left undemolished in this lighthearted exploration of the Godzilla franchise.
Byrd and Matt are joined by Chris Marti to discuss two apocalyptic Toho disaster films. First up, we talk 1961’s harrowing The Last War, a story chronicling the events leading up to World War III and the helpless civilians stuck in the middle. Featuring excellent performances by Akira Takarada, and Frankie Sakai and some of Eiji Tsuburaya’s very best effects work. We follow that up with the banned end of the world epic Prophecies of Nostradamus from 1974. This bizarre film shows us giant slugs, nuclear explosions, food shortages, cannibals, mutants, giant bats, and everything in between! We’ll discuss both films, as well as numerous real life nuclear scares throughout history, Nostradamus, aborted sequels, Toei’s rare apocalypse drama The Final War, and more! Join us as we talk about the more depressing corners of Toho science fiction in this stacked episode!
In our second episode of GACHAPOD, Drew dives deep into the history behind one of Japan's biggest stars, ULTRAMAN and the man behind his creation, Eiji Tsuburaya! We also reveal Matt's love of questionable anime content and model kits. Those were the darker years. In addition to this, Dan gets political despite nobody asking! Intro music by: tach/def-mutes
Josh hosts the gang (Pappy, Stevie, $Mikey, Brett) as they take a perilous trip to 1960's Japan. This is big monster Spoilers! ******************** King Kong vs. Godzilla (キングコング対ゴジラ Kingu Kongu tai Gojira) is a 1962 Japanese kaiju film directed by Ishirō Honda, with special effects by Eiji Tsuburaya. Produced and distributed by Toho Studios, it is the third film in the Godzilla franchise, and the first of two Toho-produced films featuring King Kong. It is also the first time that both characters appeared on film in color and widescreen. The film stars Tadao Takashima, Kenji Sahara, Yū Fujiki, Ichirō Arishima, and Mie Hama, with Shoichi Hirose as King Kong and Haruo Nakajima as Godzilla. In the film, as Godzilla is reawakened by an American submarine, a pharmaceutical company captures King Kong for promotional uses, which culminates into a battle on Mount Fuji.

Byrd, Matt and Tom are back with another October horror episode, this time talking about Japanese Invisible Man films! We've discussed Japanese takes on Frankenstein and Dracula, so its time another classic Western monster gets the Japanese treatment. We discuss two films from Daiei Studios, The Invisible Man Appears (1949) and Invisible Man vs. The Human Fly (1957). Then we go to Toho for 1954's The Invisible Man (aka Invisible Avenger). We talk about Eiji Tsuburaya's involvement in two of the films, the state of the studios at the time, and we even discuss our favorite Invisible Man films. These films languished in obscurity for decades until finally making it onto the fansub circuit. So how do these old school obscurities hold up? Listen and find out!
For the third and last of our three part look at the beginnings of Tsuburaya's Ultraman franchise, Byrd, Matt, and guest host Eric discuss the third series, Ultraseven! This was the last show that Eiji Tsuburaya would be directly involved with. Ultraseven was focused more on hard science fiction and saw our hero fighting off different alien invaders each episode. It took a much more earnest approach and focused more on story and theme than it did on being a simple monster mash. Arguably the most critically praised show in the Ultra-series, Ultraseven has a lot to offer. Tune in and enjoy the chat!
Byrd and Matt welcome very special guest, author Steve Ryfle to the show for a sprawling interview about the life and career of Ishiro Honda, director of many classic tokusatsu films (among other genres). Steve co-authored the brand new biography, Ishiro Honda: A Life In Film, From Godzilla to Kurosawa (with Ed Godziszewski). This eagerly anticipated book is the first official English biography on Ishiro Honda. It was done with the full cooperation and participation of the Honda family and details his entire life and career (including his more obscure non-genre work). Steve was kind enough to chat with us about the book and about Ishiro Honda's life and career. We discuss the genesis of the book, Honda's war experience, his messages of peace and pacifism, his relationships with Eiji Tsuburaya, Akira Kurosawa and others, and his wonderful catalog of films. So relax and join the conversation!
