Today I sit down with an aspiring MMA fighter and provide him with some guidance on where to begin with nutrition, strength and conditioning and recovery. This podcast is a recorded Zoom consult I had with a client. I like to call the initial Zoom consult our “brainstorm” phase. The brainstorming phase is a general chat to gather a better emotional, psychological and physical understanding of an athlete so that I can program something more specific later depending on the client’s goals. MMA as a sport itself can already be a lot of training volume with several martial art disciplines to learn at once; so additional time focused on aerobic training and strength and conditioning can oftentimes be overwhelming for an athlete. Just how does one even begin in MMA with so many important elements to consider? Please be aware that this consult is merely one snapshot of many conversations I and the client may have had prior and after, so there may be some unanswered questions you may be wondering why I did not bother to ask them. I like to publish my Zoom consultations with clients on my channel sometimes, so that I can provide listeners with an understanding of how I begin to program for an athlete. 00:12 - Discussing Daniel's goals and finding the 'optimal' weight class for an MMA athlete. 01:58 - How do you know when you're overtrained / heart rate variability tracking devices used to measure if you're overtraining or not. 06:08 - The only true way to find out if you're overtraining or not is with an accurate tracking device such as the Oura ring. 06:28 - Eating enough calories to sustain muscle / Finding your calorie maintenance before trying to gain muscle 08:32 - Does Daniel want to be heavier, stronger or both? 10:14 - Is reach more important or your actual height as a fighter? 11:51 - Finding your body's natural 'set point' weight as a fighter. 14:11 - How many calories do high-level endurance athletes need to maintain their weight? 22:00 - Are there cases where people gain weight and improved cardio? 24:30 - Planning a home strength program for Daniel / Kettlebell programs whilst in isolation 29:54 - The importance of red meat in any diet / Daniel's current nutrition 32:53 - Liver is one of the most nutrient-dense foods there is / I strongly recommend it for any athlete 34:33 - Studies that say animal-based protein is going to kill us / How true is this statement? 39:27 - Should you do weights and cardio before or after skill work / Training schedules for part-time fighters 46:03 - 40 sets per week of resistance training are all you need for strength training. 53:04 - The importance of long slow distance (LSD) cardio and the preferred heart rate ranges. 1:05:44 - How majoring in the minor isn't sustainable for most part-time MMA fighters/athletes in general 1:10:48 - Talking about crash dieting and the negative effects it can have in the long run / Burning fewer calories at rest Instagram - https://instagram.com/danielpekic Twitter - https://twitter.com/daniel_pekic Facebook - https://facebook.com/daniel.pekic.96 My Website - https://danielpekic.com/podcast

I’ve been asked for my take on COVID-19 several times per day. Initially, I didn’t want to provide my thoughts; listening to experts should have been our main focus during a time where urgent intervention is critical. That’s right, mainstream media is still a fair resource when it comes to a pandemic. However, I forgot that we’re among a society that often prefers to use conspiracy theories over the scientific method as the best gauge in making major decisions regarding health outcomes. So here is me doing my bit—looking for clout in being sensible and less sexy. Timestamps: 00:04 - There's not enough data to draw accurate conclusions about coronavirus yet 00:29 - The coronavirus pandemic is a result of when mass societies do not use the scientific method as the best gauge for making a decision regarding health outcomes 00:46 - My thoughts on the outlandish coronavirus conspiracies floating around 01:42 - Wherever there is profit, there is corruption. But does that mean everyone is corrupt? 02:05 - Why you shouldn't waste your energy on conspiracy theories without solid evidence during a time like this 03:35 - Discussing my thoughts on the 'new world order' and why it would be a good thing for society 04:30 - The complexity of virology and the differences in health outcomes geographically and racially 06:11 - Why short term data for the coronavirus is incomparable to the 'common cold' or other long term studied influenzas 07:41 - What happens in a free society with people who think they know more than the experts 08:56 - Discussing 'partial lockdown' and why it's not enough to eliminate or contain this virus swiftly 10:54 - My theory of what will happen to society if this partial lockdown goes on for an extended period of time 13:16 - Why I don't think an apocalypse type scenario is inevitable - Humans are communal creatures before savages 14:12 - What is more likely to happen if the entire government collapsed and people were forced to survive without government aid 16:18 - Many people are not taking social distancing seriously enough. Why you shouldn't leave the house unless you have to 18:27 - Coronavirus is so contagious that even meeting with one extra person can jeopardize your entire family’s isolation attempts 19:28 - 'It's only the sick and frail that is dying' - There are millions of elderly and sick people 20:22 - The secondary, indirect effects of health outcomes from coronavirus Instagram - https://instagram.com/danielpekic Twitter - https://twitter.com/daniel_pekic Facebook - https://facebook.com/daniel.pekic.96 My Website - https://danielpekic.com/podcast
Today I discuss a few constructive criticisms of my own strength and conditioning programming methods for MMA athletes. I also make some counterpoints about some common belief systems in the nuance of strength and conditioning for MMA athletes. With what is still a new sport in comparison to other combat sports, MMA strength and conditioning coaching is still very much in the nuances of what is “best” for an athlete. Is there really a best way to approach this area in MMA? Do we have any data to prove our points that are specific to MMA? Timestamps: 00:10 How many elite-level MMA fighters actually have an optimal strength and conditioning program? 00:31 Why mixed martial arts differ from other martial arts / sports in general 01:28 Is there such thing as 'essential' strength and conditioning exercises for MMA athletes? 01:58 Why cookie-cutter approaches don't work for a sport like MMA 02:51 Clarifying the goals for Quillan's next 90 days of training during the coronavirus outbreak 05:10 Adjustments that will be made to Quillan's training program post-coronavirus 06:59 My opinion's on why getting too specific with a training program is a hindrance to the fighter's performance 08:44 Specific exercises for power aren't always the most efficient option Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/danielpekic Twitter - https://twitter.com/daniel_pekic Facebook - https://facebook.com/daniel.pekic.96 My Website - https://danielpekic.com/podcast
