In this interview I am once again joined by Daniel Ingram, meditation teacher and author of ‘Mastering The Core Teachings Of The Buddha’. In this episode Daniel responds to Bikkhu Analayo’s article in the May 2020 edition of the academic journal Mindfulness, in which Analayo argues that Daniel is delusional about his meditation experiences and accomplishments, and that his conclusions, to quote, ‘pertain entirely to the realm of his own imagination; they have no value outside of it.’ Daniel recounts that Analayo revealed to him that the article was requested by a senior mindfulness teacher to specifically damage Daniel’s credibility, to quote Daniel quoting Analayo ‘we are going to make sure that nobody ever believes you again.’ Daniel responds to the article’s historical, doctrinal, clinical, and personal challenges, as well as addressing the issues of definition and delusion regarding his claim to arhatship. Daniel also reflects on the consequences of this article for his work at Cambridge and with the EPRC on the application of Buddhist meditation maps of insight in clinical contexts. … Video version: https://www.guruviking.com/ep73-daniel-ingram-dangerous-and-delusional/ Audio version of this podcast also available on iTunes and Spotify – search ‘Guru Viking Podcast’. … Topics Include: 0:00 - Intro 1:11 - Daniel explains Analayo’s article’s background and purpose 17:37 - Who is Bikkhu Analayo? 24:21 - Many Buddhisms 26:51 - Article abstract and Steve’s summary 32:19 - The historical critique 41:30 - Is Daniel claiming both the orthodox and the science perspectives? 49:11 - Is Daniel’s enlightenment the same as the historical arhats? 58:30 - Is Mahasi noting vulnerable to construction of experience? 1:03:46 - Has Daniel trained his brain to construct false meditation experiences? 1:10:39 - Does Daniel accept the possibility of dissociation and delusion in Mahasi-style noting? 1:18:38 - Did Daniel’s teachers consider him to be delusional? 1:23:51 - Have any of Daniel's teachers ratified any of his claimed enlightenment attainments? 1:34:03 - Cancel culture in orthodox religion 1:38:40 - Different definitions of arhatship 1:43:08 - Is the term ‘Dark Night of The Soul’ appropriate for the dukkha nanas? 1:47:29 - Purification and insight stages 1:54:00 - Does Daniel conflate deep states of meditation with everyday life experiences? 1:59:00 - Is the stage of the knowledge of fear taught in early Buddhism? 2:09:37 - Why does Daniel claim high equanimity can occur while watching TV? 2:12:55 - Does Daniel underestimate the standards of the first three stages of insight? 2:16:01 - Do Christian mystics and Theravada practitioners traverse the same experiential territory? 2:21:47 - Are the maps of insight really secret? 2:28:54 - Why are the insight stages absent from mainstream psychological literature? 2:33:36 - Does Daniel’s work over-emphasise the possibility of negative meditation experiences? 2:37:45 - What have been the personal and professional consequences of Analayo’s article to Daniel? … Check out my previous interviews with Daniel: - https://www.guruviking.com/ep14-daniel-ingram-guru-viking-interviews/ - https://www.guruviking.com/ep40-daniel-ingram-pandemic-edition-guru-viking-podcast/ - https://www.guruviking.com/ep68-daniel-ingram-magick-the-occult-summoning-demons/ To find out more about Daniel, visit: - integrateddaniel.info - firekasina.org - https://theeprc.org/ Articles Referenced: - Anālayo, B. Today I sit down with an aspiring MMA fighter and provide him with some guidance on where to begin with nutrition, strength and conditioning and recovery. This podcast is a recorded Zoom consult I had with a client. I like to call the initial Zoom consult our “brainstorm” phase. The brainstorming phase is a general chat to gather a better emotional, psychological and physical understanding of an athlete so that I can program something more specific later depending on the client’s goals. MMA as a sport itself can already be a lot of training volume with several martial art disciplines to learn at once; so additional time focused on aerobic training and strength and conditioning can oftentimes be overwhelming for an athlete. Just how does one even begin in MMA with so many important elements to consider? Please be aware that this consult is merely one snapshot of many conversations I and the client may have had prior and after, so there may be some unanswered questions you may be wondering why I did not bother to ask them. I like to publish my Zoom consultations with clients on my channel sometimes, so that I can provide listeners with an understanding of how I begin to program for an athlete. 00:12 - Discussing Daniel's goals and finding the 'optimal' weight class for an MMA athlete. 01:58 - How do you know when you're overtrained / heart rate variability tracking devices used to measure if you're overtraining or not. 06:08 - The only true way to find out if you're overtraining or not is with an accurate tracking device such as the Oura ring. 06:28 - Eating enough calories to sustain muscle / Finding your calorie maintenance before trying to gain muscle 08:32 - Does Daniel want to be heavier, stronger or both? 10:14 - Is reach more important or your actual height as a fighter? 11:51 - Finding your body's natural 'set point' weight as a fighter. 14:11 - How many calories do high-level endurance athletes need to maintain their weight? 22:00 - Are there cases where people gain weight and improved cardio? 24:30 - Planning a home strength program for Daniel / Kettlebell programs whilst in isolation 29:54 - The importance of red meat in any diet / Daniel's current nutrition 32:53 - Liver is one of the most nutrient-dense foods there is / I strongly recommend it for any athlete 34:33 - Studies that say animal-based protein is going to kill us / How true is this statement? 39:27 - Should you do weights and cardio before or after skill work / Training schedules for part-time fighters 46:03 - 40 sets per week of resistance training are all you need for strength training. 53:04 - The importance of long slow distance (LSD) cardio and the preferred heart rate ranges. 1:05:44 - How majoring in the minor isn't sustainable for most part-time MMA fighters/athletes in general 1:10:48 - Talking about crash dieting and the negative effects it can have in the long run / Burning fewer calories at rest Instagram - https://instagram.com/danielpekic Twitter - https://twitter.com/daniel_pekic Facebook - https://facebook.com/daniel.pekic.96 My Website - https://danielpekic.com/podcast

Daniel Vitalis is an entrepreneur, health lecturer with a focus on living a nature-integrated life, founder of SurThrival, a registered Maine guide, and the host of WildFed, a show, podcast, and lifestyle brand that integrates hunting, fishing, foraging, and ecology with nutrition, cooking, community, and outdoor adventure. Daniel talks about hunting, fishing, the often underrepresented world of forging, his work with SurThrival and WildFed, omnivore diets, the importance of knowing the story of your food, and the benefits of procuring wild food. Episode Highlights: Host Blake Bowman introduces Daniel Vitalis. Daniel Vitalis talks about his motivations for his health and nutrition work. How does the health diet world mirror the political divide? He summarizes the different educational elements of outdoor segments. Omnivore diets are anthropologically sound. Why is procurement of wild meat, planets, herbs, mushrooms, and water important to Daniel Vitalis? Daniel talks about hunting and serving a black bear. What is the importance of knowing the origins of the food you eat? What are the additional benefits of procuring wild food? Bears have built their muscular bodies largely from forging. Which light bulbs aren’t being made anymore? Why is it important to spend more time outside? What are the nutritional values between wild foods and commercially farmed foods? Forging is an unregulated behavior in the United States and Canada compared to hunting and fishing. Humans principal job in the environment is engineering habitat. Daniel and Blake talk about harvesting leaves. What are the benefits of having friends that hunt, fish, and forge? Daniel shares stories about morels. Does Daniel have any criticisms of the hunting and forging worlds? Why does Daniel feel that Americans are addicted to ‘survival porn?’ We are interconnected and we need each other. 3 Key Points: Daniel Vitalis believes that in the same way, birds have a left-wing and a right-wing to fly, people should have the same balance of ‘left-wing’ and ‘right-wing’ beliefs. We as human beings were never just meat-eaters. The process of procuring wild food is therapeutic because doing it barefoot gives the grounding effect, in the woods you breathe in airmatic chemicals that trees release that modulate your immune system, you are getting Vitamin D from the sun, and inhaling fresh oxygen. Tweetable Quotes: “How can we through hunting, fishing, and forging, forge a diet that replicates the one of our past, but also starts to heal a lot of imbalances that aren’t just nutritional?” - Daniel Vitalis “It’s just this weird time because people have never been more disconnected from their actual environment. But they’ve never professed to care about the environment more than they do right now.” - Daniel Vitalis “There is no hope of so-called saving the environment if people don’t start with the environment where they live. If it is always distant places, we’re doomed.” - Daniel Vitalis “We are the first people in history to live divorced from knowledge of the origin of our food and its story and I don’t think we even know yet the full implications of that.” - Daniel Vitalis (Indoors) “We are missing phenology, in other words, the movement and the changes of the season and all the things that come with it. So, in our house, it is always one temperature. In our house, it is always one light level.” - Daniel Vitalis “If you don’t have access to clean wild food, then the top of your hierarchy might be the organically-produced local produce from your farmer’s market.” - Daniel Vitalis Resources Mentioned: GuerrillaZen.com Guerrilla Zen Fitness YouTube: YouTube Daniel Vitalis: danielvitalis.com Daniel Vitalis Social Media: Instagram YouTube Facebook WildFed: wild-fed.com

We talk a little more business than usual this week, but also tried to touch on some of the clinical stigmas that DSO's may or may not be known for. Are you with a DSO? Little Women may have been the 19th century equivalent of a supermarket novel, but its staying power is pretty indisputable. We’re on film adaptation number 7 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Women#Film) so far, and this one might be the best one yet, if you listen to the critics. Will the Screeners agree? Speaking of big-screen adaptations of classic novels, there are enough of those for a Top 3 segment, so let’s go ahead and do one. Chris isn’t here for this episode, so let’s take bets on who will take up his mantle and pick Ready Player One. And while we’re here, the Academy Awards are only a month away, so let’s do a quick update on that new wager we introduced awhile back.
