This week both Google and Microsoft held conferences where they announced all the new, great AI breakthroughs, but there were a few other notable, web dev-focused pieces in between. VS Code announced it will be open sourcing the GitHub Copilot Chat extension, refactoring relevant components into its core codebase, as the next logical step “in making VS Code an open source AI editor.”Microsoft has floated a new idea called “NLWeb” to make it easier for websites to turn themselves into AI apps using an LLM model and their own data. While this sounds interesting, it's very early days yet and is not ready for prime time.A blog post from Remix creator Ryan Florence leaked earlier this week, and in it, Ryan shares that Remix v3 will move away from using React. The usual criticisms of React are present, and so Remix v3 will be completely new with a focus on a framework that's AI friendly and leveraging all the Web APIs available today. News:VS Code is open sourcing its AI chat extensionRemix's “Declaration of Independence” blog leakedAnd Microsoft introduces yet another AI standardLightning News:Satya Nadella and podcastsIntroducing Claude 4 What Makes Us Happy this Week:Paige - Daredevil: Born Again TV seriesJack -  Baseball team Portland Pickles' Red Head Appreciation NightTJ - The Philadelphia Inquirer's summer reading listThanks as always to our sponsor, the Blue Collar Coder channel on YouTube. The tRPC team declares v11 officially production-ready. tRPC allows devs to build typesafe APIs with types that can be shared on the client and server, and now it has support for TanStack Query v5, the ability to send and receive non-JSON data content types, improved support for RSCs, and the ability to stream responses. After the Next.js security incident a few weeks back, Netlify writes an open letter around the challenges Next.js poses when not hosted on Vercel. It raises valid points like a lack of adapters, no production grade documentation for serverless deployments, no visible roadmap or release schedule, and a disregard for open web standards, among others.Firefox is finally adding support for progressive web apps (PWAs), but its web app support will intentionally not look, feel, or behave the same way similar features do in other browsers.News:Paige - tRPC v11Jack - Firefox will support PWAs (finally)TJ - Next.js Netlify deployment dramaBonus News:Styled-components enter maintenance modeNew Bare JS runtimeWindsurf and Netlify partnership (and docs on the feature)What Makes Us Happy this Week:Paige - Squeeze Me novelJack - Pickup Music siteTJ - Mario Kart WorldThanks as always to our sponsor, the Blue Collar Coder channel on YouTube. In our last news episode of the year, we share that React 19 is declared stable, just in time for the holidays. It's been a long road from release candidate in April to stability now, but it was well worth the wait. React 19 is packing a lot of features, including: Actions, hooks, form actions, the new use API, and of course, React Server Components and Server Actions.OpenAI's been busy as well, introducing ChatGPT Pro, its $200 a month subscription for unlimited access to OpenAI o1 (the “reasoning model), GPT-4o, and Advanced Voice mode. Additionally, the startup announced the ChatGPT desktop app for macOS can now read code in a handful of developer-focused coding apps, like VS Code, XCode, Terminal, and iTerm2.There's a new challenger to Figma for styling React-based code bases called Onlook. In the new frameworks based on React, we introduce you to One. It is a Vite-powered project claiming to support React web apps and React Native apps all in one.Next, Host Jack Herrington shares an update on how Astro's Server Islands work after trying them out for himself. Similar to React's Suspense components, Astro's Server Islands allow any component that relies on server data to render with a “fallback” (like a loader or skeleton component) in the browser until the data is returned and the full HTML can render. And as we cannot go a week without talking about the latest WordPress and WP Engine drama (listen to our last 3 episodes for full details), the latest kerfuffle involves WordPress seizing control of one of WP Engine's most popular plugins hosted on the WordPress Plugin Directory and pushing a forked version of the plugin that WordPress is in control of under the same name.News:Paige - One, the new React framework built on ViteJack - Astro Server Islands (take 2)TJ - WordPress starts taking over WP Engine pluginsBonus News:Google inks nuclear deal for next-generation reactorsExpress 5 and Zustand 5Fire Starters:What Makes Us Happy this Week:Paige - Trying new things: like a voiceover workshopJack - Hue smart plugsTJ - Only Murders in the Building season 4Thanks as always to our sponsor, the Blue Collar Coder channel on YouTube. WP Engine is taking Automattic and Matt Mullenweg to court. The complaints are numerous and juicy: extortion, libel, slander, and include screenshots of text messages, tweets, and emails that look pretty damning against Automattic. The whole story has “Made for TV documentary” written all over it.In slightly less controversial news, React 19 has renamed its Server Actions to Server Functions. This name change brings React's server functions more in line with other frameworks who support the same sort of functionality like SolidJS, Astro, TanStack Start, and others. Also in a follow up from the last episode where we talked about a new addition to the Web Components world allowing for web components with SSR via the Declarative Shadow DOM, a good number of JavaScript framework creators shared their misgivings about the creation of Web Components. Kicking off the discussion is the release of Vue 3.5. Although it's not a major release, Vue 3.5 packs some great new features and optimizations like: reactivity system improvements (up to 56% less memory usage for apps than before), reactive prop destructuring stabilization (it's simpler to declare props with default values), and SSR improvements like lazy hydration for async components.RedwoodJS is also out with a new version, and 8.0 packs a wallop. It makes RedwoodJS the third framework to support React Server Components behind Next.js and Waku. The shadcn CLI has gotten an update as well where it can spin up a brand new Next.js app with shadcn and Tailwind configured and ready to go. Additionally, shadcn has integrated more tightly with Vercel's v0 AI code generator, and now every shadcn component is editable on v0, so users can customize the components in natural language and paste it into their apps afterwards. Pretty amazing! The TC39 Committee responsible for evaluating what new features get added to the JavaScript language has added a new intermediate step for proposals: step 2.7. By the time new proposals reach step 3, they must already have full test suites to support their implementation, and if, for any reason, they must go back to step 2 to rethink things, a lot of that work can be for naught.News:Paige - Vue 3.5 is outJack - RedwoodJS 8.0 and shadcn CLI updatesTJ - JavaScript Standard Gets an Extra StageList of ECMAScript proposals on GitHubBonus News:Laravel raises $57 million series ASSR benchmark wars update (author Matteo is the Fastify lead maintainer)What Makes Us Happy this Week:Paige - House of the Dragon season 2Jack - Raspberry Pi TJ - Linkin Park is back! Thanks as always to our sponsor, the Blue Collar Coder channel on YouTube. We've got a good show for you today! It's chock full of new build tools, better date handling in JavaScript, and SSR benchmarks to prove which framework is truly the fastest. The rust-ification of JavaScript build tools continues, as next generation build tool Rspack hits v1 and claims it's ready for primetime. Rspack boasts (almost) complete compatibility with the webpack API while also being 10x faster.JS dates are about to be fixed thanks to the new Temporal API proposal, which is currently in stage 3 of the TC39 process of adding new features to the JavaScript language.A new benchmark war has erupted online: this time benchmarking which JavaScript SSR frameworks are the fastest. Benchmarking results are dubious at best because everyone's application is different, and has different requirements, but this one got a lot of heat due to the author using an LLM to generate the code to run in these different frameworks (React, Vue, Svelte, Solid, Fastify, etc). Finally, the CSS Survey 2024 is out now! Could drinking water make you smarter? Actually no one is really sure, but it does seem to be so. This episode begins by explaining how we know this is true and what some possible explanations might be. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/minding-the-body/201205/can-sipping-water-make-you-smarter# Humans are strange creatures who act in weird ways. For example, we often compare ourselves to others. We exaggerate our stories to make us look better. And we do unusual things to make ourselves happy. All of this makes you wonder – why? Joining me with some fascinating explanations is William Von Hippel, a professor of psychology at the University of Queensland in Australia and author of the book, The Social Leap: The New Evolutionary Science of Who We Are, Where We Come from, and What Makes Us Happy (https://amzn.to/3pVYaCZ ). From the time you were little it has been drilled into your head to take care of your teeth and mouth by brushing and flossing every day. While that's a good start, it may not be enough according to dentist Dr. Kami Hoss, who sits on the Board of Counselors at the UCLA School of Dentistry and is the CEO of The Super Dentists (https://www.thesuperdentists.com) and he is author of the book If Your Mouth Could Talk (https://amzn.to/3MGtU8V) . Listen as Dr. Hoss reveals how your oral health can have a significant impact on your physical and mental health. You have probably heard of the 7-year itch. It's the theory that at around the 7th year of a marriage or romantic relationship things can start to fall apart. Is it a real thing? Maybe. But it often doesn't take 7 years. Listen as I reveal some interesting insight.. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/seven-year-itch-now-down-to-three-years-why/ PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS! What We Discuss with Bill von Hippel: What our eyes tell us about how humans evolved to cooperate with one another. How a psychological phenomenon called the theory of mind makes us aware that mental states of others don't match our own, and why this trait gives human beings a unique advantage in the animal kingdom. Why hunter-gatherer societies are more egalitarian than what we see in modern Western civilization. Why so many of us hate the way we look in photographs. Can animals lie? And much more... Can simply drinking water make you smarter? Apparently so, at least for a little while. While no one is exactly sure why, I begin this episode by explaining how we know it is true and some of the theories for what causes it to happen. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/minding-the-body/201205/can-sipping-water-make-you-smarter We humans engage in some strange behaviors. We constantly compare ourselves to others. We tend to exaggerate our stories and the strangest things can make us happy. Why do we do these and other seemingly odd behaviors? Here to explain is William Von Hippel, a professor of psychology at the University of Queensland in Australia and author of the book, The Social Leap: The New Evolutionary Science of Who We Are, Where We Come from, and What Makes Us Happy (https://amzn.to/3pVYaCZ ). You probably take care to brush your teeth everyday and maybe floss once in a while - but is that enough? Not according to dentist Dr. Hoss explains how the way you care for your mouth can have a significant impact on your physical and mental health. The 7-year itch is the theory that at around the 7 year mark, a romantic relationship can start to falter. Is it a real thing? Sort of. But it usually doesn't take 7 years. I begin this episode with some interesting insight into that. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/seven-year-itch-now-down-to-three-years-why/ PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS! We explore how the challenges of our evolutionary past shaped many of the most fundamental aspects of our behavior in the modern day, traversing a journey from several million years ago to the present day. Along the way we touch heavily on many topics, including, but certainly not limited to, our evolutionary mismatch with the modern environment, why humans innovate the way we do, and different leadership styles that are rooted in evolutionary responses to hierarchy. From the episode:"If you ever go into the bookstore and realize Tonia is in this bookstore, there's three sections you will fine me in: One is the notebook section, because I keep buying notebooks. The second section is the main section I'll be in, which is the self help section. I'm obsessed with self-help. The third section is the new age section." - Tonia McIntosh"Tonia doesn't use notebooks. If there is anything I could succeed at, it might be to get Tonia to just write things down in her phone or a notebook, or really anywhere." - Brandy Little"I devour books." - Tonia McIntosh"The heart of it is beautiful and the heart of it is real, and that's really all that matters at the end of the day." - Tonia McIntosh"You have to embrace the parts of yourself that are harder to love. You have to love yourself holistically, like as a whole being. You have to love all the parts of yourself. So, you can't just be like, 'I love this and this about me, but this and this, these parts of myself I hate, or I'm not even going to acknowledge these parts of myself.'" - Tonia McIntosh"There's intent and actual outcome. My intention is best, but is the result also going to match that intention?" - Brandy Little"Everything you do is a trade off - When you say yes to something, you're saying no to something. When you're focusing on something, you're not focusing on something else." - Brandy Little"Everything really just comes down to what you're maximizing, but there's usually some sort of costs involved, and so you have to figure out what matters most to you." - Brandy Little"There's certain places where you can shine the light, but if you're shining the light on these areas, then there's going to be a shadow and in different places, because a light breaks." - Tonia McIntosh"Light and dark are kind of two sides of the same coin." - Tonia McIntosh"The goal is to get to a point where you're just fully loving of all parts of yourself and embrace them as they show up and in whatever manner that they show up." - Tonia McIntosh"Love yourself as a caterpillar - you don't have to wait until you're a butterfly to love yourself." - Brandy Little "It really is about the journey and not the end points." - Brandy Little"Light and darkness is a spectrum." - Tonia McIntosh"We're all capable of casting light and we're all capable of casting a shadow, because that's what it is to be fully human." - Tonia McIntosh"Sometimes you have to make a loving choice for yourself and it ends up hurting people. Sometimes you have to make those kinds of hard decisions." = Tonia McIntosh"Sometimes our actions create shadow." - Tonia McIntosh "It's also worth recognizing not just the shadow within yourself, but the shadow in others, and try to make space for those people. But also, forgive yourself for the space that you can't hold for someone." - Brandy Little "Wow! How interesting this shadow episode got dark?" - Tonia McIntosh"You have to know your own boundaries, what you're capable of, and what kind of space you're capable of holding for someone." - Brandy Little"Knowing your boundaries is really important, because then you know how much you can give and when you have given all that you can." - Brandy Little"Maybe the shadow is everything that is behind us." - Tonia Mcintosh"I think we have like five or six different definitions of the shadow self." - Brandy Little"I know we don't like to talk about dark things that much, but there's value in it. If it were a book, we wouldn't be in that section." - Tonia McIntosh"We can't ignore all the parts." - Brandy Little Books MentionedThe Social Leap: The New Evolutionary Science of Who We Are, Where We Come From, and What Makes Us Happy | https://amzn.to/3sR1myMCrime & Punishment | https://amzn.to/3rqEINpQuotes Mentioned"I cried not so much out of a sense of loss, but from the pain that almost always comes with change, it has a sad kind of freedom." - Dolly PartonConnect MoreWebsite | https://www.listenhearter.com/  *coming soonFacebook | https://www.facebook.com/ListenHearter/instagram | https://www.instagram.com/listenhearter/Twitter | https://twitter.com/ListenHearter/YouTube | https://youtube.com/channel/UCtZ0znK-otguMViLFgb_BpQSupport MorePatreon | https://www.patreon.com/listenhearterSponsorsWe are searching for sponsors. We also talk about tribalism, the advent of agriculture, and hierarchy and economic, social and sexual inequality, and the problem with polygamic societies. Also, the mismatch between the ancestral environments we adapted to and the modern ones, and what our innate psychology tells us about what makes us happy, even in modern industrialized societies. Most people say that business isn’t personal, however if you’ve ever owned or currently run a private business, you know that statement is completely false… your business is a reflection of you and all your values. Your business and your life are inevitably intertwined. Marc Miller, Owner and Chief Happiness Officer at Imagine IT, has made happiness his life's work after experiencing a tragic family event. Even though life threw him a very challenging curveball, he is on a mission to figure out “what it takes to be happy” even if it comes from an unlikely place. If you listen, you will learn: How to keep running a business when you experience a family tragedy Four principles of happiness How to use your business to teach your values How to make happiness actionable in the workplace A Family Tragedy Over two years ago, Marc's son, Gunnar, was in a fatal accident. Gunnar had issues with substance abuse and depression, but that is not what took his life. He was over 14 months sober and wiped out on a skateboard and died. After this tragic and devastating accident, Marc wanted to do something to honor his son. He started a non-profit, The Gunnar Project. He didn't want to create another youth addiction non-profit so decided to go another route with it. “Gunnar had this unique ability to make people happy,” explains Marc. Marc decided to focus on the idea of happiness for the non-profit. The mission of the Gunnar Project is to inspire young adults and others to wake up every morning and pursue happiness.  What Makes Us Happy? Happiness is an intangible thing. It is a buzz word in our society today. Marc has read tons of books and research articles on happiness and outlines the four main principles of happiness in the podcast which can also be found on the Gunnar Project website: Healthy people find more happiness than those who are sick or unhealthy. People who learn, create, teach, grow are happier than those who are bored. People who are closely connected to others find happiness more than lonely people. People who are “good”, who have a relationship with a higher power are happier than those who are bad, who lie, cheat, and steal. Marc urges listeners to plan to intentionally do things every day that make you happy. Outline your day in the morning and avoid doing things throughout the day or talking to people that will make you crabby. Plan and choose to be happy. “The investment you have to make to be happy every day is a 3-minute investment. If you don't have 3, 4, or 5 minutes in your day to pursue happiness, you are screwed.” People may think happiness is this big thing or event. It isn't a milestone or pot at the end of the rainbow. In talking about happiness being more about the journey, not the goal, Marc says, “Happiness can be found in the little spaces in between the milestones, because that is where the action happens.”  Culture of Happiness Marc has created a culture of happiness at Imagine IT. After Gunnar died, Marc changed his title to Chief Happiness Officer to further his mission to drive happiness with everybody he meets day in and day out. Talking about happiness at work isn't a “normal” thing in most companies. Imagine IT puts happiness at the forefront and therefore have a vocabulary around the subject which makes it easier for employees to talk about happiness. Happiness is actionable within Imagine IT's culture. It is talked about in weekly

Josh Shenk - Want to be great? Then don't go at it alone. Throughout history teams of exactly 2 people have made the biggest impact - think Lennon and McCartney, Wozniak and Jobs, Orville and Wilbur Wright...the list goes on and on. But why? This week we crush the myth of the "lone genius" and learn how the best creations of all time came from people who worked in pairs. Josh Shenk, author of Powers of Two: Finding the Essence of Innovation in Creative Pairs, tells us not only why 2 is the magic number, but also how you can find your creative pair and start making history. Josh is a curator, essayist, and author. His magazine pieces include cover stories in Harper’s, Time, and The Atlantic, where his essay "What Makes Us Happy?" was the most read article in the history of that magazine’s website. His work has also appeared in Slate, The New Yorker, and The New York Times. His first book, Lincoln’s Melancholy, was named one of the best books of 2005 byThe New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Atlanta-Journal Constitution.. He is a curator, storyteller and advisor to The Moth; vice-chair emeritus of the board of directors, he currently serves on the general council. He is also a past director of the Rose O'Neill Literary House at Washington College, where he curated programs and festivals and directed a small literary press. Shenk consults to the Erikson Institute for Education and Research at the Austen Riggs Center, where he directs the Erikson Prize for Mental Health Media and Arts in Mind, a conversation series on the creative arts and psychology, co-hosted by the New School in New York City. "Creativity is not about being comfortable.
