Nelson Vergel's story is one of resilience, perseverance, and an unrelenting drive to defy the odds. In the mid-1980s, he was handed what many would have considered a death sentence—an HIV diagnosis at a time when there were no effective treatments, no clear answers, and little hope. Today, he is a beacon of knowledge and empowerment for those seeking to take control of their health, whether they are dealing with wasting conditions, hormone deficiencies, or simply aiming for peak performance. Nelson has spent decades researching and advocating for hormone health, muscle preservation, and medical autonomy, particularly for those facing wasting conditions like HIV and cancer. His work has helped shape the conversation around androgen therapies, the role of anabolic agents in aging, and the intersection of GLP-1 medications with muscle loss.We cover:Nelson's personal journey from an HIV diagnosis to hormone optimizationThe history, misconceptions and stigma surrounding anabolic agentsThe differences between various anabolic agents and how they work The impact of GLP-1 medications on lean mass and how to mitigate muscle lossBest practices for hormone monitoring and optimizationIf you want to hear an inspiring story of overcoming the odds to take control of your own health or you're curious about anabolic therapies and longevity, you can't miss this one. As of 2022, no longer will we only celebrate in June. Introducing Pride Houston 365. Full transparency coupled with a goal of celebrating Houston's LGBTQIA+ community year-round, raising critical funds for youth scholarships, and offering ongoing health and wellness education takes time. And it equals a 365 days-a-year commitment.Guest: Lavender Leehttps://pridehouston365.orgThen, we speak with Houston's lone LGBT city Councilmember Robert Gallegos who is announced he is running for Houston mayor.  Robert Gallegos is a native Houstonian. Nelson Vergel is a chemical engineer who started his search for cutting-edge health knowledge when he was diagnosed with HIV over 30 years ago. Instead of giving into the hopelessness of the deadly diagnosis, he pushed himself to explore therapies to combat wasting syndrome to save his life and those of his peers. He reviewed medical literature and attended numerous health conferences, eventually becoming an advocate member in the National Health Institute (NIH), pharmaceutical research committees, and FDA review panels. To spread survival knowledge, he has given health-related lectures, providing over 700 of them since 1987. Nelson has created popular health forums with over 55,000 members and has networked with many progressive clinicians. He has been a speaker for 14 pharmaceutical companies on hormones, side effect management, and healthy aging. He is the author of the books “Testosterone: A Man’s Guide” and “HCG Manual for Men”, and co-author of the book “Built to Survive”; the founder of the nonprofit organizations Body Positive Wellness Clinic and Program for Wellness Restoration in Houston; and the aging expert at TheBody.com. ExcelMale.com, one of his latest projects, is quickly becoming a leader among information exchange platforms for men’s health. To remove barriers for self-monitoring, Nelson created DiscountedLabs.com to provide low-cost blood tests to people in most cities of the United States. He is the co-founder of Clinic Optimizers, an integrative medicine educational company that provides reference-backed information to physicians about compounded formulations used in hormone replacement, weight loss, sexual health, dermatology, and other uses.

Sex, Love, and Addiction: Healing Conversations for Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Men

Nelson Vergel is an author, speaker, men’s health coach, and former chemical engineer. He also has done and continues to do amazing work in the field of HIV and advocacy. As a Long-Term Survivor, Nelson stepped up out of the dark and shared his findings on how testosterone treatment helped prevent Wasting Syndrome, reversed fragility and got the body healthier overall. Nelson discusses how he got into advocacy work, the stigma around body image and confidence that he has shifted to be a source of motivation, and resources where people can go to learn everything from affordable labs to a guide for proper testosterone treatment.   TAKEAWAYS: [1:30] Nelson is a Long-Term HIV Survivor, and found in 1985 that he had the virus. He became very focused on how to not die from Wasting Syndrome, a leading cause of HIV related death that he saw many of his friends and loved ones pass away from. He left his career as an engineer to devote himself to the cause. [3:33] Nelson’s techniques helped him gain 35 lbs of muscle, which changed his outlook and gave him hope for both himself and others. This bought him time and prevented Wasting until they came out with drugs in 1996. [5:22] Those with HIV typically have low testosterone, and Nelson noticed that treatment with testosterone helped prevent and reverse fragility when combined with exercise and proper nutrition. It also helped support lean body mass, which is a key to survival and overall health and energy. Since women also have testosterone, it is a treatment that can help all genders, even those that identify as trans or another identity. [7:57] Wasting is defined as 10% more weight loss from your base weight. [9:39] Once treatment for HIV was more underway, Nelson then saw a need to cross over and help people all around the world who had low testosterone, but not HIV. He continues to work with men and women to teach them how to understand symptoms of low testosterone, possible treatments, how to talk to their doctor, and some of the benefits they can expect once they are more in hormonal balance. [24:11] Body image and confidence is already a complicated issue, and there is more pressure than ever before to look great and fit into our cultural definition of strong and sexy. Nelson was able to turn his body image issues into fuel that made him healthy, but often is the cause of much anxiety and stress to look a certain way. People must remember there is no quick fix, but instead health and wellness is a lifetime commitment.   RESOURCES: Built to Survive Testosterone: A Man’s Guide Program for Wellness Restoration Nelson Vergel Testosterone Replacement POZHealth Excel Male Discounted Labs U=U   QUOTES: ● “I think I survived because of all the knowledge I was able to gather.” ● “I got this message out at the right time. Doctors were desperate.” ● “It is time for some of us to cross over and help the entire population.” ● “I have been able to shift my body image anxiety into something that makes me healthier and hopefully live a little longer.” ● “I’m a product of my own advocacy.”

Metformin is one of the oldest and most studied drugs on earth, but a lot of people in the medical community are still hesitant to prescribe it. What are the benefits of this drug for people with different health problems and needs? What does it do for weight, insulin levels and high blood sugar? Does it make people hypoglycemic? On this episode, Dr Nelson Vergel gives a presentation on different studies of metformin and why it’s a great drug to use. Testosterone-metformin combination therapy decreased total and LDL cholesterol, uric acid, hsCRP, homocysteine and fibrinogen, and it increased plasma testosterone. -Dr. Nelson Vergel Three Takeaways Metformin shifts gut bacteria and gives patients the gut biome composition of a leaner person. Metformin doesn’t decrease blood sugar to hypoglycemic level. In HIV positive patients, studies have shown a reduction in T-cell exhaustion with the use of metformin At the start of the show, we talked about why metformin is such a hot topic right now, and Dr. Nelson began his lecture on metformin, starting with its history, benefits and some of the reasons why it causes patients to lose weight. We also discussed its benefit for people with cancer, and overweight people. Towards the end of the show we talked about what people get wrong about the ketogenic diet. We also discussed; How metformin affects the gut biome Metformin’s impact on HIV positive patients Why metformin is better than berberine Metformin and diabetic mortality rates Metformin is a hot topic right now, and with good reason. It has a lot of benefits, it is affordable and it has a great many studies backing it up. It dilates vessels, it decreases insulin and blood sugar, it improves metabolism of glucose, cardiovascular protection and it also decreases weight and lipids. Testosterone and metformin work very well together when it comes to body composition and inflammation. Metformin has also shown an ability to increase lifespan for people with cancer, and it helps people with HIV a great deal. There no risks with metformin unless you have some sort of renal issue, or take a drug with a contra-reaction.  If you’re going to start taking, it start low, and go slow. Nelson Vergel, author of the landmark book Testosterone: A Man’s Guide, joins to share his story of overcoming a deadly diagnosis, helping to pioneer the use of anabolic steroids in HIV/AIDS treatment and his perspective on life goals and awareness. We started with Nelson’s background growing up in Venezuela. Nelson wanted to get into medicine but opportunity was limited,  so instead he got into the oil and gas industry as an environmental engineer before emigrating to the US in 1984. Shortly after settling down in the States Nelson was diagnosed with HIV, at that time the equivalent of a death sentence. In fact, one counselor told him, “Go home, pray, and take care of your business.” Nelson pulled himself up, telling himself, “I refuse to die” and soon he spotted an opportunity. “I became obsessed. I found out the CDC for the first time was training volunteers who wanted to inform themselves and become counselors.” This had a major impact on him, “It really helped me. I really got it. I got what it is to help others get out of your head, get out of your self pity, get aware of your power. Power even in the worst situation in your life, not to let that rule you and define you.” Nelson jumped at another opportunity, this time to join a study for a new drug called AZT. He seemed to be doing well, even hiding the illness from co-workers. It was later revealed that Nelson was in the placebo group, which turned out to be a blessing, as patients receiving the real AZT in the study were wasting away. Nelson lost so many friends to HIV in the 80’s that he stopped counting at 35, including his boyfriend who was also in the AZT trial. “I feel like I aged a lot in my soul...Every week was a memorial service. I shut down.” Nelson was transferred to LA and joined a support group where he encountered bodybuilders for the first time. With nothing to lose, Nelson started taking supplements and alternative therapies and immediately felt more energy. Once again, Nelson’s dream of working in medicine and health resurfaced. He started researching, subscribing to the top AIDS newsletters in the country, often reading till the early hours of the morning. This led to a major turning point, where Nelson came across an article by a “Dr. X” who was HIV+ and had risen from his deathbed by using anabolic steroids. Nelson, with the help of friends, connected with him and other researchers and doctors. Through these relationships and his own research, Nelson began working on his book and then lecturing across the country, eventually delivering over 600 lectures. Nelson gets messages everyday from people who’ve been impacted by his writing, “Every time I give, I get a lot more back.” Jay agreed, “Once you align yourself with being generous, paying it forward, always being of the mindset to help other people, it’s amazing what comes into your life.” Nelson shared his perspective on ego, “You’re going to have an ego voice that’s going to try to tell you that you’re not worthy. That you’re not good looking, not smart enough, or whatever.” He went on to explain you’re never really cured, but you can come to a place where you recognize the ego as something outside of yourself. It’s not you.   Drawing from his incredible story and wealth of research, Nelson’s continues to mentor and inspire through relationships with people all over the world. We hope you come away from this interview inspired to pursue your dreams, help other people and reach new levels of health and wellness. Paul Stalbaum was born and raised in suburban Philadelphia and attended Penn State with a BS in psychology. He went to Villanova law school and discovered after 1 year he hated Torts so he left school to join the family business, a travel agency. Through his and his bother's efforts his Agency grew to be the 11th largest in the country with 7 offices and 175 employees. Paul has been poz for 30 years and remains healthy and asymptomatic. He uses both a western medical approach combined along with alternative methods and maintains a positive attitude towards HIV. In fact while in Philly he became and HIV counsellor and founded what became the most well attended peer led support which he called Positive Attitudes. After selling his business he moved to sunny Ft Lauderdale and was surprised to find that no support group existed in a community with such a large HIV population. So he volunteered to start up a new Positive Attitudes support group at the Gay and Lesbian Community Center. As word spread once again it was overwhelmingly successful with as many as 60 - 70 showing up on any given night. In 2005 he decide to combine his two passions, travel and supporting the HIV community by founding what has become an annual GLBT Poz Cruise. The cruise grows larger each year with many who have attend virtually every year. The cruise offers an opportunity to participate in a relaxing and affordable vacation while having the chance to attend workshops led by HIV experts such as Nelson Vergel, Dr. Michael Wohlfieler, Dr Charles Steinberg, and Mark King.

Body shape changes are among the most frustrating complications of HIV and HIV medications. Whether it's the gradual sinking of their cheeks or the sudden swelling in their midsection, some people with HIV have been largely forced to just grin and bear these problems, since there are few treatments available (and those that are available can be expensive). In the first episode of our freshly revived This Month in HIV podcast series, HIV activist and long-time survivor Nelson Vergel leads a discussion with Donald Kotler, M.D., who is an expert on metabolic complications and HIV. They'll fill us in on some of the latest updates on this important issue.

How do you make heads or tails of an HIV medical conference with 1,000 presentations? Surely the 14th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections -- better known as CROI -- is a gold mine of critical studies on every facet of HIV, from prevention to treatment to quality of life. We've covered this conference extensively on our site, but for people with nonmedical backgrounds, this coverage may be difficult to put into context. That's why, for our March edition of "This Month in HIV," we've interviewed two experts who can break down the conference highlights for people who aren't experts. Physician and researcher Joel Gallant, and HIV-positive activist Nelson Vergel, tell us about the breaking research that really mattered at CROI this year.
