This episode of the Holistic Health Bites Podcast explores the multitude of benefits associated with fasting. One of the standout advantages is insulin regulation; fasting significantly reduces blood insulin levels by allowing the body a break from constant digestion. This rest period also aids in reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, promoting better overall health and lowering the risk of chronic diseases.Fasting also contributes to improved heart health by normalizing blood pressure and reducing triglycerides, positively impacting heart disease, the leading cause of death globally. Additionally, periods of fasting can facilitate damaged tissue repair, as the digestive organs rest and energy is redirected toward cellular regeneration and repair. Enhanced brain function is another benefit, with people often experiencing clearer minds and improved memory during fasting periods.Other notable benefits include greater appetite control, potentially lower cancer risks, higher levels of Human Growth Hormone (HGH), and a more robust immune system. Fasting also triggers autophagy, a process where the body regenerates at a molecular level, which plays a crucial role in antiaging. These combined benefits suggest that fasting has a cumulative positive effect on overall health and longevity. For full show notes and information: https://healthylifewithandrea.com/blog/7330/11-benefits-to-fastingDid you know my practice is entirely virtual? Have you ever been hurt and wanted to keep training AND also heal and recover faster? I recorded this episode after a client of mine had a hip replacement and couldn't do any lower body or core training. I helped him work around that by focusing on his arms 4x per week and creating a huge cascade of Human Growth Hormone (HGH) and IGF-1 to help promote healing and recovery. Now this idea has been around since the 70s, and is making a pretty big splash in the bodybuilding world as a way of growing muscle faster, especially if you don't want to lift a ton of weight - BUT not many people are using it how I describe here If you've ever been sidelined with an injury, been down with an illness, you KNOW has debilitating that can be for your progress or at least your consistency - it's always harder to get BACK ON after we fall off. But what if I told you that you could keep your progress, get short 5-10 minute workouts, and actually heal faster...all at the same time? You're gonna want to check this out. Here are the bands I talk about in the episode, but you can eaily get lower quality ones on amazon: https://nate.b3sciences.com/
One of the more common questions I get asked, as it relates to red light therapy, is how is it different than infrared saunas? Do they elicit the same health benefits? Which one is "better"? If I had to choose one, which modality should I use? Understandably, the major hangup and confusion comes from both technologies integrating infrared light... granted of different flavors of infrared and, thus, different physiological responses. We cover the basics of what infrared saunas are, the difference between traditional vs. infrared saunas, discuss the top 10 benefits derived from consistent hyperthermia treatment and more. Possibly, most importantly, I delineate the differences between infrared saunas and red light therapy and emphasize the importance of not doing red light therapy and sauna simultaneously! This is especially important to understand and appreciate, as I have seen more and more often that infrared sauna companies are incorporating red light therapy (either for ambience lighting and/or actual red light therapy panels and other devices inside of the sauna). Long story short: the heat from the sauna inhibits the benefits you would otherwise obtain from red light therapy. Lastly, we will cover a very, very hot-off-the-press photobiomodulation research article that looks at red light therapy for treating children with premyopia. In a world with exponentially increased screen time, particularly in youths, any type of alternative modality to help prevent, stave off and reverse eye and vision issues is a massive deal. If you have eyes, this study has some groundbreaking results that you will want to learn about. I hope you enjoy the information in today's solosode. Please share this episode with family, friends and colleagues if you find the content especially interesting and/or impactful. HGH treatment might cause a number of side effects for healthy adults, including: · Carpal tunnel syndrome · Increased insulin resistance · Type 2 diabetes · Swelling in the arms and legs (edema) · Joint and muscle pain · For men, enlargement of breast tissue (gynecomastia) · Increased risk of certain cancers Clinical studies of HGH treatment in healthy older adults have been relatively small and short in duration, so there's little to no information about the long-term effects of HGH treatment. Example of Acromegaly According to the Mayo Clinic: Acromegaly is a hormonal disorder that develops when your pituitary gland produces too much growth hormone during adulthood. When you have too much growth hormone, your bones increase in size. In childhood, this leads to increased height and is called gigantism. But in adulthood, a change in height doesn't occur. Instead, the increase in bone size is limited to the bones of your hands, feet and face, and is called acromegaly. Because acromegaly is uncommon and the physical changes occur slowly over many years, the condition sometimes takes a long time to recognize. Untreated, high levels of growth hormone can affect other parts of the body, in addition to your bones. This can lead to serious — sometimes even life-threatening — health problems. But treatment can reduce your risk of complications and significantly improve your symptoms, including the enlargement of your features. In this podcast episode, Jay is joined by Miklos Major, a functional and family medicine nurse practitioner with extensive knowledge in hormone optimization. They discuss the current state of hormone therapy and the challenges and scrutiny faced by prescribers of health optimization tools in this category. Many physicians are ignorant about how to manipulate hormones to improve the quality of life for their patients, which results in many people being prescribed testosterone who have no business being on it, while others are being denied the benefits of hormone optimization when it could dramatically improve their quality of life. Jay and Miklos also debunk several common myths around hormone optimization, including misconceptions about the role of estrogen, the (improper) use of GLP-1 agonists, and the value of growth hormone secretagogues (GHS) as alternatives to human growth hormone in some cases. If you're looking to gain a deeper understanding of hormone therapy and how you can effectively navigate the modern healthcare system to improve your health and well-being through hormone optimization, you'll want to give this a listen. "The average Western trained physician doesn't understand the difference between optimization and the treatment of pathology." – Miklos Major What You'll Learn From This Episode The difference between hormone optimization and the treatment of pathology, and how the modern healthcare system gets it wrong. The reality of estrogen's role in the body and what many practitioners fail to get right about managing it in patients. In this special episode of the Low Carb Hustle I talk a bit about a very fringe idea and way of recovering from injury.
Human Growth Hormone (HGH) isn't just for super muscular male athletes or olympian warriors. That's actually a myth! If our guest looks familiar, that's probably because you've seen him on The Joe Rogan Experience, HBO, ESPN, CNN, FOX or have read his latest book, Traumatic Brain Injury. Dr. Mark L. Gordon has been a strong advocate of preventive medicine through the optimization of neuroactive and neurosteroids. He was instrumental in increasing the recognition of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) as a cause of hormonal deficiency in the hallmarked presentation on ESPN's Outside the Lines (2007). His first book, The Clinical Application of Interventional Endocrinology (2008), is recognized by his peers as a dissertation on the standards of care and assessment for Hormone Replacement Medicine. His academic standards and medical knowledge had been recognized by USC, where he holds the position as Voluntary Associate Clinical Professor (1998) in the USC Keck School of Medicine. When it comes to Human Growth Hormone (HGH), not many experts are more knowledgeable than Dr. Gordon. That's why I brought him on to focus on an episode entirely dedicated to HGH. *Hot Topics: - What HGH Is & How It Affects Your Brain - Identifying Deficiencies - The Risks & Benefits - How HGH Differs From Peptides - Debunking HGH Myths - Traumatic Brain Injury *More About Our Guest: Dr. Gordon started over 35 years ago using combinations of natural ingredients to address memory, mental energy and cognition as well as physical performance without any banned or restricted products. Music Licensed to Dan WilkzSPEAKERS: Tim Ferriss, David Goggins, Robert Kiyosaki I want to dive into the science behind my morning routine and give the world more proof of the benefits of morning mastery. Why wake up before the sun? After all, serotonin isn't produced by your brain to wake you up until your eyes perceive light. So, why then, should we wake up hours before the sunrise? And if you choose to do this, what should we do with our time?I love Dr. Joe Dispenza's quote. “ In a world full of information, ignorance is a choice.” I remind myself of this every time I encounter new information that I don't fully understand. It often pops up in my head when I feel like I can't find anyone to help me on my journey. It strengthens me. You see, the phone in your hand eliminates any excuse we can use to justify our lack of resourcefulness. A thorough search of your keywords on Google will teach you anything you want to learn. Most people are so caught up in the rush of life that we “don't have time” to read… There is no excuse not to learn how to be successful at doing what you dream of doing. Have you ever wanted to do something, go somewhere, or learn something new, and then after coming face to face with the negative aspects, you decide you ARE NOT WILLING to go through those things? I have just told you all of these things for the purpose of priming your brain for my morning routine. It is important to understand that the feeling of “I fucking hate this, fuck me, fuck me, fuck me,” was ever-present in my mind when I began practicing this morning routine. In order to grow into an unstoppable force, you are going to have to choose to do things you don't want to do. 3:30 am– Wake up, Start Hot shower-End 5min Cold shower, BCAA pre-workout4am – Gym: Start with weight training. Alternate days from Chest day, Back day, Arms, Legs, Shoulders. Followed by 20min cardio with a goal of 400-600 calorie burn. End with 15 minute Abs workout. Abs are done every day. 5:30 – Read for one hour: mix of psalms, proverbs, and self-help material6:30 – 10-minute Alkaline breathing with Wim Hof video, 20-min Tuning Into New Potentials meditationThis routine does not change. There might come a day where it is more difficult to make the choice to get up. But when the alarm goes off, I use Mel Robbins 5-second rule, and 5-4-3-2-1 I'm out of bed and in the shower. Now, let's talk about the reason behind this not being difficult for me. Reason 1) I programmed the belief into my mind with sleep hypnosis Reason 2) I am asleep before 10 pm and I sleep thoroughly until 3:30 am. Human Growth Hormone (HGH) is primarily produced by rest during this time frame. So, if you are in a deep, relaxed sleep during this time frame, you can upregulate the production of the primary chemical responsible for deep, restorative sleep. In other words, you can sleep faster. I get my 8 hours of sleep in 6 and this adds 3 hours to my morning before I have to go to work. Mastery of my mental states (willpower). Mastery of my emotional states (self-discipline), Mastery of my health and well-being. I defeat my ego, train my mind, body, and spirit, and plant wisdom in the soil of my consciousness before I start my day. Don't forget the share this episode with someone you think would beneift! Human Growth Hormone (HGH) is a natural hormone that is released from the anterior pituitary. HGH starts to decline as we age at a rate of 1% a year. That decline can be higher than 75% by middle age. Recently, we've had several inquiries about growth hormone at the office. Dr. Durst goes into a specific peptide, CJC 1295, to discuss the benefits. Did you know the effects of Growth Hormone on the body? It can decrease body fat, increase muscle mass, the health of skin and hair, increase energy, mental clarity, improve mood, increase libido, improve blood pressure, and improve lipid profiles. At RevitalyzeMD, Dr. Durst has formulated a GH peptide program that is medically managed and utilizes peptides to increase GH as we age. The goal of our program is to increase your body's own Growth Hormone for all the beneficial effects on the body. We use Growth Hormone Releasing Hormones (GHRH) and peptides to increase secretion of Growth Hormone in a more physiologic fashion. It is called the GH program because it is not necessarily growth hormone but the effects are the same. Our goal is to help you regain confidence and achieve your best self! In this podcast, I'll explain how to tighten sagging skin using your own human growth hormone (HGH). HGH is considered the anti-aging hormone. One of its key functions is anything to do with protein: prevention of muscle mass loss, improvement of the collagen surrounding your joints, and providing a healthy glow to your skin. Some people actually get it injected, which I don't recommend because of the side effects. And it's expensive, about $1,500 per month. Don't buy it! Your body makes it in the pituitary gland and activates it through the liver. Human Growth Hormone (HGH) is one of the hottest new trends in the world of anti-aging, with products out there promising to boost your body's production of HGH, turning back the clock on aging...less joint pain, better sleep, looking younger. (you get the picture)A little skeptical but still hopeful, Darcie sits down with Dr. Kim Trager and Candace Lawrence, Too Cool For Midlife's on staff "ninja-fairy" truth seekers, to get the skinny on HGH. They discuss whether it is the anti-aging magic pill, and if any of the product on the market is useful and worth investing in. About Dr. Kim Trager and Candace Lawrence:Kim and Candace, vitality pioneers, specialize in helping women feel better faster. They offer real solutions for health-related issues that hold women back from reaching their full potential. These two brilliant practitioners have spent the past 25 years changing women's lives. They are fun, approachable and they know their shit. Recipes & Chocolate recommendations: You can find the delicious (and surprisingly healthy) recipes from our very own Candace Lawrence HERE. And when choosing dark chocolate, two of the most important things to look for are 1) 70% cacao or higher 2) NO soy lecithin, which unfortunately MOST chocolates do contain. We recommend one bar that is the cleanest, organic, and most delicious dark chocolates that passes the test, HU Chocolates. Human Growth Hormone product update: Since taping this episode, Dr. Trager and Candace Lawrence have completed their testing of HGH product mentioned, and no product tested to date has shown more promise than natural approaches discussed in this podcast.

So, I've decided to share another video I have particular interest in because it gets a little more into the particulars as far as when and how to exercise and what to eat in non fasting hours. Gregory O'Gallagher is obviously into weight lifting. It's weightlifting and bodybuilding that actually drew me toward intermittent fasting to begin with. Especially the thought that a bodybuilder can increase his or her Human Growth Hormone (HGH) levels up to 2000% without supplements. Anyway, check out Gregory O'Gallagher's video and let me know what you think in the comments below. Thanks! For more about Intermittent Fasting, simply search youtube. There is a ton of free content that really gets into individual experiences and even the science of intermittent fasting. We are more complicated then simply fuel in - fuel out Lots of things happen in between and these processes are mediated by hormones What is a hormone? Molecules produced by your your body that regulate many processes in your body. Hormones are influenced by environment. E.g. People have heard of Hormones will change your physiology based on external environment. This allows you to survive and adapt quickly to your environment UNDERLYING THEME: hormones in moderation and in short pulses is healthy, if hormones are elevated over time ---> many health problems Insulin Secreted from the pancreas in response to blood Stores nutrients Inhibits lipolysis Leptin Secreted by fat cells Makes you know your fed If overweight - leptin resistance (Why your hungry when overweight) Needed for fertility Ghrelin Made mostly in the stomach; acts on the brain (hypothalamus) to stimulate hunger. If you want to lose weight, you want less ghrelin. Lowest between 7-9 am 20 minute waves No increase longer you fast CCK (cholecystokinin) Released in the small intestine when fats and proteins are eaten. In the brain CCK depresses hunger meaning the more CCK you have floating around the less hungry you are This is one reason why a lower-carb, higher-protein, higher-fat diet make people feel fuller longer. Cortisol Secreted by adrenal gland Evolutionarily speaking it is there to get you out of danger it raises blood sugar (to feed muscles so you can run or fight), raise blood pressure, and modulate immune function. Over time, sustained high cortisol is linking to high blood pressure, diabetes, increased belly fat, brain changes such as atrophy of the hippocampus (where memory is synthesized), depression, insomnia, and poor wound healing. fat cells in the belly have four times more cortisol receptors compared to fat cells elsewhere, as your cortisol climbs / and is sustained - -> muffin top What leads to chronically high cortisol Emotional and physical stress Over exercising Sleep deprivation Melatonin Helps you sleep Increases insulin resistance Don’t eat late at night Human Growth Hormone Important for development and growth in children HGH deficiency in adults leads to higher levels of body fat, lower lean body mass (sarcopenia) and decreased bone mass (osteopenia). Goes down with aging HGH is crucial in the maintenance of lean mass – both muscle and bone. Human Growth Hormone (HGH) declines with age in every animal species. In humans, after the age of 20-30 HGH levels decline 14-15% every 10 years; by the age of 60 HGH is usually less than half what it was at 25. Exogenous HGH used in athletes/bodybuilders Tried it in others Inc risk of prostate cancer, dm to name a few 5 fold increase in HGH in response to a 2 day fast. HGH may be one reason why you see preservation of lean mass with fasting Body builders are harnessing this (Martin Birkham - Leangains)
Welcome to The Nutritional Pearls Podcast! Focusing on topics that include digestion, adrenal fatigue, leaky gut, supplementation, electrolytes, stomach acid, and so much more, “The Nutritional Pearls Podcast” features Christine Moore, NTP and is hosted by Jimmy Moore, host of the longest running nutritional podcast on the Internet. Sharing nuggets of wisdom from Christine's training as a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner and Jimmy's years of podcasting and authoring international bestselling health and nutrition books, they will feature a new topic of interest and fascination in the world of nutritional health each Monday. Listen in today as Christine and Jimmy talk all about the endocrine system in Episode 15. Here's what Christine and Jimmy talked about in Episode 15: 1. What is the Endocrine System? The collection of glands that produce hormones that regulate metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, sexual function, reproduction, sleep, and mood, among other things. 2. Definition of hormones: Regulatory substances produced in an organism and transported in tissue fluids such as blood to stimulate specific cells or tissues into action. 3. Glands of the endocrine system and the minerals they depend on: A. Hypothalamus: Located in the brain, this is the part of the brain that controls the endocrine system. Think of it as a control center. It links the nervous system to the endocrine system through the Pituitary Gland. It releases at least 7 to 8 hormones that control the Pituitary Gland. The hypothalamus needs chromium for good health. 1. Thyrotropin-releasing Hormone (TRH)-a releasing hormone produced by the hypothalamus that stimulates the release of thyrotropin (thyroid-stimulating hormone or TSH) and prolactin from the pituitary gland. 2. Gonadotropin-releasing Hormone (GnRH)-signals the pituitary gland to create two hormones called leutenizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) 3. Growth Hormone-releasing Hormone (GHRH)-stimulates the pituitary gland to produce and release growth hormone into the bloodstream. Once growth hormone is releases into the blood, it has an affect on just about every tissue of the body to control metabolism and growth. 4. Corticotropin-releasing Hormone (CRH)-Its main function is to stimulate the pituitary gland to produce Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH) 5. Somatostatin - it regulates the secretion of hormones coming from the pituitary gland, including growth hormone and thyroid stimulating hormone. It also inhibits the secretion of pancreatic hormones which include Glucagon and Insulin 6. Dopamine - this functions as a neurotransmitter which is a chemical released by neurons or nerve cells to send signals to other nerve cells. The brain has many distinct dopamine pathways and one of these pathways plays a big role in reward-motivated behavior. B. The Pituitary Gland: Located in the brain, it has also been described as the “master gland” because it secretes hormones that control other endocrine glands. It needs manganese for good health 1. Oxytocin-controls key aspects of the reproductive system and some aspects of human behavior 2. Prolactin-hormone that helps women produce milk after childbirth and it's important to both male and female reproductive health 3. Leutenizing Hormone-triggers ovulation and stimulates the production of testosterone 4. Anti-diuretic Hormone (ADH)-tells your kidneys how much water to conserve; it also constantly regulates and balances the amount of water in your blood 5. Human Growth Hormone (HGH)-encourages growth in children and adolescents, helps to regulate body composition as well as bodily fluids and muscle and bone growth, helps regulate sugar and fat metabolism, and it possibly helps with heart function C. The Pineal Gland also known as the Third Eye: This gland is also in the brain and it produces melatonin which helps with circadian rhythm. It is also known as the Third Eye because the Third Eye chakra in the Hindu system is located in the center of the forehead which is near the pineal gland. It depends on iodine and boron for good health. D. The Thyroid Gland: It depends on iodine and tyrosine. It is located in the front of the neck just below the Adams apple and is considered to be one of the major glands in the regulation of metabolism. It produces: 1. thyroxine (T4) which gets converted to its active form, triiodothyronine (T3) with the help of selenium. T3 controls basil metabolic rate 2. Calcitonin-responsible for the uptake of calcium to the bone E. The Parathyroid Gland: It's located in the neck behind the thyroid and produces parathormone or PTH which is associated with the growth of muscle and bone and distribution of calcium and phosphate in the body. It depends on calcium for good health. F. The thymus: The thymus lays across the trachea and bronchi in the upper thorax. It produces thymosin which triggers the immune system by activating the T-Cells and T-Lymphocytes which are white blood cells associated with antibody production. The thymus needs zinc for good health. G. The pancreas: It lies behind the stomach and needs chromium for good health. The pancreas produces: 1. Insulin by the Beta Cells which is responsible for the conversion of glucose to glycogen, shuttling glucose into the cells, and the conversion of excess glucose to fat 2. Glucagon by the Alpha Cells which is responsible for the conversion of glycogen to glucose H. The adrenal glands: They are on top of the kidneys and they rely on copper for good health. They produce: 1. Adrenalin which prepares the body for fight or flight 2. noradrenalin-which has similar effects to adrenalin 3. corticosteroids that include cortisol, cortisone, and corticosterone I. The ovaries: They are located in the lower abdomen and they rely on selenium for good health. They produce: 1. Estrogen which is responsible for the break-down of the uterus wall 2. progesterone which builds up and maintains the uterus wall for embedding of fertilized egg and is also associated with body hair, breast enlargement, and physical changes in the body J. The testes: They're located outside the pelvic cavity and produce testosterone which is responsible for the development and function of male sex organs and is associated with body hair, muscle development, and voice change. They rely heavily on selenium for good health. K. The prostate: It's about the size of a walnut located between the bladder and the penis. It produces prostate-specific antigen (PSA) which help keep the sperm in liquid form. The prostate relies on zinc for good health. 4. People with different endocrine issues carry weight on specific parts of the body A. If someone has adrenal gland problems through prolonged stress, cortisol is released and stores fat around the most vital organs which are in your midsection. Thus, a person with adrenal issues will carry more weight around their midsection. B. People with thyroid issues tend to carry weight all over since the thyroid controls the metabolism in all of your cells. C. For people with problems with their ovaries, they will tend to carry extra weight around their hips and lower stomach area. D. If a person has liver problems, they will tend to carry extra weight around their body but have thin legs 5. Blood sugar imbalances mess up the entire endocrine system because not only are the pancreas, liver, and adrenal glands all necessary for blood sugar regulation but they are also heavily involved in the endocrine system. Nutritional Pearl for Episode 15: It is very important to make sure blood sugar levels are normalized and under control before addressing any endocrine problem you have because blood sugar imbalances disrupt the entire endocrine system. Secretropin®,the logical first step in Growth Hormone therapy. Human Growth Hormone (hGH), is secreted by the pituitary gland which is located in the center of the brain, peaks during adolescence when growth is most rapid. It is the primary hormone responsible for maintaining mental and physical health through tissue repair, healing, cell replacement, bone strength, brain function, enzyme production, integrity of the skin, hair, and nails. By the age of 60 it is not uncommon to see levels 75% lower of growth hormone than more youthful levels. This can also decrease due to concussion and traumatic brain injury. As we age or by injury, hGH output begins to fall off, whether by sluggishness of pituitary secretion or because of true hGH decline. The outcome is the same: declining levels of hGH give rise to a plethora of symptoms which we know as the telltale signs of aging: Loss of elasticity - thinning, sagging and wrinkled skin Loss of bone strength - osteoporosis Loss of Mu
I know! That’s a big ol’ claim in the title of this blog post. Can sleep really have that much of an impact on your body and mind? In a nutshell… yes! And that’s exactly what I’m going to explore in this post. It’s a long one. But by the end of consuming this, I really want to have gotten across to you… Just how vital sleep is to your health and performance; what optimal sleep looks like; what happens when we’re sleep deprived; and also how you can fix any sleep issues you may be experiencing and get the best night’s sleep of your life! Don’t Buy The Badge! It seems there is a weird ‘badge of honour’ that exists when it comes to sleep. As if sacrificing your sleep makes you a harder worker, more driven and more deserving of success. Bollocks! A meta-analysis by the Dept. of Psychology at Bradley University suggests that sleep deprivation “strongly impairs human functioning”. And study after study that has been done supports this too. Even though you may not necessarily “feel” the effects now, I promise you that a lack of sleep is going to make you sick, tired, moody, unproductive and struggling to burn fat. Why Is Sleep Important? Your body comes under a lot of stress during the day. Even if you aren’t what most would call ‘stressed’, you are still ‘switched on’ and dealing with a whole manner of things in your day-to-day life. Now, stress is good. We need to stress the body or we simply wither away into nothingness. But we also need to balance this out by allowing our body to repair itself, regenerate cells, digest, detoxify and generally build back up from the breaking down we did through the day. If we’re not allowing the body to do this, then we are on a downward spiral of continuously breaking the body down. And this is not good. What Does Optimal Sleep Look Like? We have hormones that tell us to ‘be awake’ and hormones that tell us to ‘wind down’ and get ready to sleep. The main two involved here are cortisol (awake) and melatonin (down). These hormones should work on a 24-hour rhythm that pumps out cortisol as the sun rises in the morning and melatonin as we start to wind down in the evenings. So optimal sleep isn’t about simply ‘getting your eight hours’ at any time. Our hormones are set to ‘do their thing’ and for us to get the optimal benefit from our sleep when it gets dark. In fact, it’s been shown that we do most of our physical repair when asleep between the hours of 10pm and 2am, while doing most of our psychological repair between 2am and 6am. This means we have a sort of ‘optimal sleep window’ that leaves us able to get the best sleep between the hours of 10pm and 6am without waking up to pee or anything else. You should wake up feeling rested and not like you need to stay in bed for another hour – even at 6am! What Happens When We’re Sleep Deprived? I’m not saying that if you don’t sleep exactly between the hours of 10pm and 6am then your brain will explode and you may as well jump off a bridge. But if the constant breaking down I referred to before takes place without allowing for recovery and replenishment, then this results in a fair few negative things going on in your body: Imbalanced hormones. This is probably a blog/podcast topic all by itself, but sleep deprivation has a direct impact on healthy hormone secretion. This means all kinds of weird and wonderful negative things can happen to how you look, feel and perform! Toxicity (including your brain!). Detoxification is a huge part of what happens during sleep. If you’re not sleeping right, you’re not detoxifying right. If you’re not detoxifying right, then you are leaving shit in your body that it would ideally like to get rid of. Plus, your brain has its own detoxification system (called the glymphatic waste system) that has been shown by the University of Rochester Medical School to be up to 10x more active during sleep. Decreased cognitive function. When you don’t sleep well, your concentration, focus and short term memory take a deep downward spiral. Essentially, you become less efficient at completing tasks and your ability to learn and store new information dissipates. Not good if you want to perform like a badass! Poor decision making. As a follow on, it’s been proven time and time again that you just do not make as good decisions when sleep deprived. Again, not good if you want that competitive advantage. Propensity for weight gain. Combine that crazy mix up of hormones with the poor decision making and you’re making it very easy to store fat. Plus, sleep and Human Growth Hormone (HGH) go hand in hand, with HGH being a muscle building, fat burning hormone. Depression. Studies have shown that even slight sleep deprivation can result in low mood and depression. Poor sleep is a huge disruptor of serotonin production, which results in us not getting that happy juice the brain needs! There are a lot more things that poor sleep results in. But, in a nutshell, it’s important to remember that sleep screws up your hormones and therefore moves you in a direction of over-toxicity, depression, disease, storing fat and performing poorly in all aspects of life. How Do We Sleep Better Then? It’s all well and good telling you how important sleep is. But many of us would struggle to actually go ahead and get good quality sleep, even if we wanted to. So here are my best strategies for getting the best night’s sleep of your life: Set yourself a sleep and wake up time. Getting as close to the ‘optimal sleep window’ as possible means setting a ‘rule’ in your life around valuing sleep. Aiming to get to bed between 10-11pm and waking up between 6-7am most of the time allows you to train an optimal sleep pattern. Have a caffeine cut off time. If you’re a caffeine consumer, then be aware that it stays in your blood for longer than you think. So don’t be doing Starbucks at 9pm! For me, I rarely have anything heavily caffeinated after 3pm. Get more sunlight in the daytime. Melatonin (that wind down hormone I mentioned earlier) is regulated by light exposure. So getting your dose of sunlight during the day can really help to promote melatonin production after sunset. But minimise that light at night! Once the sun does set, it’s common to then simply wack on a giant 100 watt bulb for the rest of the night. But the body still thinks the sun is up and doesn’t secrete that lovely melatonin. Dimming the lights, or going by candlelight is a great idea. Minimise screen time at night. Again, your body can’t tell the difference between sunlight and the light on your computer. So TVs, laptops and anything pumping out that blue light can hugely disrupt sleep. Try switching it off at least an hour before sleepy time. lux it up, if you have to. I know it’s not always realistic to expect a complete screen ban. So the next best thing is minimising that blue light, which has been shown to be the light colour that disrupts sleep monumentally more than any other. A great app for your computer is f.lux, which dims your screen of blue light according to when the sun sets in your location. Get rid of the electrics! You know those electronic devices we tend to keep and charge in the bedroom each night? They transmit mass amounts of electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs) that create havoc with our ability to sleep optimally. Seriously, get rid of the electronics from the room and unplug everything you possibly can. Have a bed time routine. Creating a little ‘wind down’ routine can do wonders for your sleep. Rather than smashing through 10 episodes of Family Guy, try an hour of things like yoga, stretching, meditations, journaling and even a warm bath with magnesium flakes or Epsom salts. If you’re going to eat, eat protein and fat. Some people need a little snack before bed. But going for the carb-dense foods like fruit or desserts can create a blood sugar crash that wakes you up and disrupts your sleep. Stick to protein and healthy fats for balanced blood sugar and good sleep. Beast out the magnesium. Magnesium is involved in hundreds of biochemical processes and helps us, among many other things, deal with stress. But it gets depleted pretty quickly, so a good quality supplement can do wonders for sleep. It’s best using a transdermal (via the skin) spray supplement though as it’s the easiest way for the body to take it in. Black out your room. Get rid of any and all light. Any light that even touches your skin will raise a question mark in your body as to whether it’s morning and, therefore, time to wake up. Black out the room and allow the sunrise to dictate when it’s time to wake! Meditate. If I ever don’t sleep, it’s because my mind is going a mile a minute worrying or thinking things through. Since I started regularly mediating a couple years ago, I am rarely sat staring at the ceiling worrying that I’m wasting my life. Numerous studies have shown that just 10 minutes of meditation per day can help calm that inner douchebag talking shit to you. And that be by sleep masterclass for thee. Now, I imagine over the coming weeks, months and (hopefully) years, I’ll be going into more depth in various different areas here. But this is a pretty beastly overview to the whole sleep world that I hope helps you to appreciate the value of sleep in being an Enlightened Entrepreneurial Badass. And also to help you in your quest to fix sleeping issues and optimise this area of your life so you can look, feel and perform at your very best in all areas of your life. Confirmation of the diagnosis of GH deficiency in adults and children involves provocative testing for human (h) GH. Different commercially available immunoassays yield largely discrepant results in the measurement of GH levels in human serum. These discrepancies result in doubtful relevance of cut-off levels proposed for GH provocative testing. We have developed an immunofunctional assay method that allows quantitation of only those GH forms in circulation that possess both binding sites of the hormone for its receptor and thus can initiate a biological signal in target cells. An anti-hGH monoclonal antibody recognizing binding site 2 of hGH is immobilized and used to capture hGH from the serum sample. Biotin-labeled recombinant GH-binding protein in a second incubation step forms a complex with those hGH molecular isoforms that have both binding sites for the receptor. The signal is detected after a short third incubation step with labeled streptavidin. The assay is sensitive (detection range, 0.1-100 micrograms/L) and has average inter- and intraassay precisions of 10.3% and 7.3% respectively. Endogenous GH-binding protein does not interfere with the hGH result; placental lactogen slows no detectable cross-reaction in this immunofunctional assay. The degree of immunofunctionally active hGH forms in serum samples, calculated by comparison of immunofunctional assay and RIA results, varied between 52-93%. We propose this immunofunctional assay for GH measurement as a new reference method for hGH quantitation in serum. The immunofunction assay translates only hGH forms into an assay signal that are capable of dimerizing GH receptors and, thus, of initiating a biological effect in target cells.
