#157. In this episode I catch up with my friend, fellow podcaster and artist, Stephania Ramos to chat about the common thread that unites so many of us multi cultural folks, the idea that love needs to be somewhat toxic to be real. I call this type of love, "amor de telenovela", you know where slapping someone is a turn on, "no" often means "yes", and being passive aggressive and playing hard to get is the only way to win. That's the impression of love Stephania and I had growing up, and it stained every relationship we both had. Until one day we each realized the secret to letting go of that toxic idea of love had nothing to do with other people or canceling Telenovelas, and everything to do with ourselves. ----more---- JOIN ME ON INSTAGRAM or TWITTER: @Maribel_QS. #154 - Do you think your parents gave you a specific name so that you could be called something else? Something that doesn't really sound like your name, but it makes people comfortable, it's easier this way. I know my parents named me Maribel (Mah-REE-bel). That was always my name, until we moved to the U.S., and one day my dad picked up a call from someone wanting to know if MaryBell was home. My name would not return until the last quarter of my senior year in college, when I finally realized I had been trying so hard to fit in for so many years, that I had forgotten who I really was. Fast forward to now, I'm still struggling to correct people when they mispronounce my name. So I brought this episode back from season one, where my friend Tareya Palmer joins in to chat about one of the biggest things we have in common, people never know how to pronounce our names, and why "Justice" is more than just a word to her. As people of multicultural and multiracial backgrounds, we're often hit with the most random and intrusive questions. Constantly being asked to define ourselves in order to be properly catalogued, and boxed in, according to society's expectations. Why is that? And why do people of multi-racial identity have to divide themselves into percentages, 50% this, 30% that, rather than embracing all their ethnic backgrounds as wholes? I know the math doesn't make sense, but neither does having to explain yourself every day. In this episode we explore the BIG question and what biracial identity means in today's world with professional gofer, spokesperson and fellow podcaster, Cheyenne Woods. One of the coolest things I've learned from another culture is how to meditate. Meditation was never part of my life as a child in Mexico, or even as a teenager in Ohio. I discovered it later in life, when I was struggling to figure out how to "tone down" my Latina fury-a title I gave to my reactionary personality back then. Little did I know that it wasn't a matter of appeasing anything, but re-directing my energy, becoming more mindful meant practicing not only how to process emotions better, but how to be kind to myself and others. Years later I realized that I didn't need to tone down anything, I just had to get to know myself better in order to focus my energy correctly. As a Latina, it took me a long time to realize that there's NOTHING wrong with having a passionate, fiery, or "sassy" outlook, and meditation helped me discover this, and so much more! That's why I love learning about meditation and sharing the gift of mindfulness with others. JOIN ME ON INSTAGRAM AND TWITTER: @Maribel_QS. Let's kick off the New Year with real talk that might make some of you uncomfortable. As a person of color, I deal with "buyers remorse" whenever I'm called to invest in myself or my business. Things like hiring help, paying a business coach, going to therapy, even upgrading my sheet thread count have made me feel bougie, or like an impostor. Raise your hand if you've heard or have said these words out loud: "Therapy's for white people", "coaching is for rich people", or my own version: "nannies are for rich white ladies". The sad truth is that we keep participating in this narrative as if the world wasn't already constantly telling us that we're not good enough to have these things. For so many people I know, that's often the perception. Well I say F*CK PERCEPTION. ¡NO MAS! I will not hold myself back by these limiting beliefs, and neither should you! That's why I asked, Transformation Coach, and fellow podcaster, Tangia Renee Estrada to join me in dismantling these lies, by exploring the cultural nuances that make it so difficult for us to wash away the impostor syndrome, and the fear of making "rich white lady decisions". With last week's premiere of Selena, The Series on Netflix, I was reminded of the immense Spanglish subculture that exists within the Latinx community and how there's a lot of debate on whether or not Spanglish is an "acceptable" form of communication. The verdict might be still be out on that, but one thing is certain, much like Selena, el Spanglish is here to stay. Because Diferente is a bilingual podcast, this episode is in Español. This is a narration of my experience during one of my first (early) encounters with racism in the United States. Tied together with verifiable facts on the topic, and information about anti-racism practices by three experts, in order of appearance: Roger Senserrich, Editor y Activista Maricela Becerra, PH.D., Professor at UCLA Lizz Florival, Afrolatinax, Author, Poet, Podcaster En nuestra comunidad Hispana, continua siendo común el racismo. #BlackLivesMatter JOIN ME ON INSTAGRAM AND TWITTER: @Maribel_QS ----more---- EPISODE CREDITS Producer, Maribel Quezada Smith Editor: Julian Rodriguez Diferente theme music by Andres Sierra Other tracks: "Gravity" by prod. waytoolost, and "Break Up" by Samhu
The past few months have felt like we are living inside of a SciFi movie, often trying to figure out what's real and what's make believe. That's why in this episode I wanted to take some time to reflect about how this Pandemic has affected us on a personal level. Because sometimes we have to be reminded that there are real people behind these COVID-19 numbers, with real life and death consequences. In the first part of this episode I had a conversation with Activist, Kristin Urquiza who lost her father to COVID-19, about the effect of the virus on the Hispanic community, and how she's turning her grief into action to help other victims of this pandemic. Also, in the second part of the episode you'll hear some of the people in my life share what they've learned since the pandemic started and how they're coping with this "new normal". Living the Diferente Life! * BONUS EPISODE * This episode is from a podcast that I was a guest on called Cafe con Pam, hosted by my friend and fellow podcaster, Pam Covarrubias. I wanted to share it with you because it fits perfectly with the spirit of getting out of my comfort zone, which I have been all about this summer. Pam and I talked about my childhood in Mexico, my journey as an immigrant in the United States, the meaning of love, and other things that I haven't shared before. Most recently, she has become a disaster mental health worker to assist in national disaster relief efforts, including helping survivors of Hurricane Harvey and the Las Vegas massacre. #143 - This is the final episode of season one of Diferente and the most open and honest moment I've had on the podcast so far. I've asked you repeatedly this year to question the norm and dare to step outside of your comfort zone, and it's only fair I do it too. Because it has come to my attention that some people might be getting the impression that I have my life in perfect order, well I don't! Though I can't pretend I haven't tried to. :-) (Control issues, remember?) So in this season finale, I get into why it's important to be honest about the kind of life you want to live, versus the kind of life other people might want you to live, and how stability doesn't always equal happiness. Roy Wood Jr’s comedy has entertained millions across stage, television, and radio. In 2017, he was named the new host of Comedy Central’s storytelling series, “This is Not Happening,” which will launch the fifth season next year. #141 - In my opinion, the worst kind of heartbreak is when someone you love passes away. A few weeks ago our friend and guest on Different, Shawn Boxe, passed away. You might remember the episode he was in, last summer. If you do, you probably remember his inspiring outlook on life. So I want to share his episode with you again. In honor of his memory, and the Boxe family, who was so welcoming to us when we were in Canada last week for the funeral. I also want to share some of the things that I went through when I lost my brother-in-law four years ago, in hopes that my experience through grief will help others who might be going through the same thing. #134 In this episode, I chat with New York Times bestselling author, lawyer, and investor, Danielle Town, about the role of Money in our romantic relationships, the bad financial habits we pick up as kids, and how we have the power to change the way we look at wealth. If you're like me, you're probably investing in your retirement. But like me, many people are paying someone to manage these investments when they could be doing it themselves and saving a lot of money, with the added benefit of choosing directly what companies, and therefore what values, that money supports. Maybe you do this because you think you don't have what it takes to make these decisions on your own... much like my guest feared before she got the confidence to quit her job, take control of her money, and invest on her own terms! Danielle started out her adventure as an investor desperately afraid of numbers and stock markets until she realized she had been abdicating the power of her money and discovered how to transform her fear into financial freedom. If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to start your own business, or if you’ve already started and you need some inspiration and real-life business-savvy advice from fellow entrepreneurs who have been through the ups and downs, then these next few episodes are exactly what you need to hear. I know that as a listener of Diferente you crave inspiring content, that’s why you tune in and come back week after week, right? So because of that, I really wanted to dig deep into the various topics that surround the word entrepreneur. Because let me be real here, entrepreneurship is a lifestyle. It ain’t for the faint of heart, and there is no single formula for achieving entrepreneurial success. Over the next few episodes, you will hear from six different entrepreneurs who are all in different stages of their brand’s lifecycle. Some are just starting and some are making major waves that have disturbed industries. Each conversation focuses on a specific topic that keeps entrepreneurs up at night. The good news is that we can all learn from their struggles, without having to sacrifice our beauty rest. #132: In this (two-part) episode with The Nailsaloon co-founder and entrepreneur, Andréa Vieira, we focus on the courage required to begin the entrepreneurial journey, why we should be proud of the wisdom we earn with age, and how to set realistic goals and expectations as a new business owner. #131: My guest this episode is Nikki Novo. A Cuban-American, bestselling author, and intuitive dating coach. "Her latest book, “The Final Swipe: Heal Your Heart, Find Your Person, and End the Dating Search for Good,” was listed as the number one dating book in Amazon. She’s also A certified hypnotherapist with the International Association of Counselors and Therapists and has been commissioned to speak by organizations like Equinox, Yahoo, Macy’s, among others. She has been featured in Marie Claire, NBC, and Telemundo." During this convo, we discovered we have so much in common! Like we both dated a lot! And we also sometimes had to hide our dating life from our parents for fear of looking like a slut. That’s a thing when you’re a woman sometimes… it’s a crazy double standard, I know. Nikki shares powerful insight into the actions that help us attract the right relationships in our lives, both romantic and platonic. And why our spiritual journeys play such a major role in our love lives. #130: Do you ever wonder if you're living for yourself and what your heart truly desires, or if you're living for other people's expectations? Many of us make decisions and live according to a set of demands that we never even willingly subscribed to, just because we want to please others, or our egos. I've been reflecting on this fact lately and I think that's why I've had this nagging question in the back of my mind lately: Who am I living for??? Have you ever asked yourself this? Maybe you have, or maybe you have not. Regardless, this episode of Diferente might change your perspective on what it is you truly desire after all. #129: In the first six months of Diferente we’ve been blessed with amazing guests who have shared their thoughts on what success means to them. Because at Diferente, we believe that success is a personal word, to be defined by each individual only! There is never a wrong answer when it comes to answering this question… What is your definition of Success? If you haven’t taken time to reflect on this seven letter word, what better time than now?! Every single conversation we’ve had on Diferente has left me with something to reflect on and expanded my curiosity even further. But since I don’t have time to share EVERYTHING I've learned with you, I decided to put together my personal list of ten takeaways that I hope also resonated with you! #128: My guest this episode is a fellow passionate creative who immigrated here when she was 18. Her name is Angie Garcia, and the other day we sat in my kitchen sharing stories of our personal experiences living as immigrants in the United States. And how we’ve both learned that part of being an immigrant and living the "American dream" is learning to adapt to FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS. If you’re an immigrant like Angie and me, you’ve probably had a similar experience, where one day you realize that things here are not as perfect as they once seemed from afar. Most of us had this rude awakening during the last presidential election, and in this episode, we talk a little bit about that, plus: What it’s like to have to find a new community. Constantly having to explain our immigration status to people. And the reality of white immigrant privilege. #127: THOUSANDS of people suffer from some sort of confidence issue related to their body size. The scariest part is that this mentality has become the norm. How many times have you asked yourself… Do I look fat? It’s time to start asking WHY? In this episode of Diferente, I confront some of my own beliefs regarding health and diet culture, with anti-diet registered dietitian, Christy Harrison, from the popular podcast Food Psych. We also talk about intuitive eating, health at every size and fat-phobia. GET READY TO LISTEN WITH AN OPEN MIND! #126: This episode is all about the struggle of chasing a dream and the opportunities that come when you’re down and out. Just when you feel like the journey is over, and you’re ready to give it all up. Because the pain from continuing the chase feels impossible and it is no longer worth it. My guest this episode is my friend, Ervin Ross. Ervin and I go WAYYY back. And when we had a chance to sit down while I was in LA, we talked about his experience in pursuing his passion for the arts as an actor. Ervin talks about something that is VERY familiar to many of us, learning to adapt and code switch between cultures without losing your unique personality. Ironically, Ervin spent much of his childhood trying really hard not to stick out but his uniqueness eventually led him to his career today! Sound familiar? This funny man is a ninja at life and a great example of what life looks like when you don’t waste opportunities. And when the opportunities don't present themselves, Ervin likes to create his own. #125: My guest this episode is...ME! I was interviewed by my husband and a recurring guest on Diferente, Doug Smith. A few weeks ago, my husband came up with the idea of me being a guest on my own show. I thought that’s silly! Why would people want to hear me talk about myself? I’ve done a couple of solo episodes, but they’re quick and not too personal, but a full interview??? After we finished recording, I realized that I had previously thought exactly the same thing I’ve heard some of my guests tell me, and the same question, “how is my story relevant?". When I hear someone say that, I always reply, “We all live through experiences that someone out there can relate to, if you could inspire just one person out there listening, your time sharing this story, will not be wasted.” I hope this helps you get to know me a little bit better. We've only just begun to scratch the surface, I promise there is much more to come! #124: My guest this episode is Cheyenne Woods. You might know her as the sixth African-American woman to play on the LPGA Tour, who truly represents the wonderful things women can bring to this world through sport, healthy competition, and of course drive! You probably also recognize her from her latest Nike Golf commercial, or her partnership with Volunteers of America, or the thing that every reporter has asked her about, being the niece of Tiger Woods. This episode is not about any of those things, though of course, her golf career comes up, as it is a significant part of her life journey and who she is. But this woman is so much more than golf. So in this episode, we talk about how it’s important to connect with people and build genuine human relationships as we grow. How sometimes we have to get uncomfortable to figure out who we really are and focus on our personal success versus the expectations of others. Plus dating, equal pay, and standing for something greater than ourselves! For more details on this and other episodes, plus other fun things, follow Diferente on Instagram Facebook. A former staff attorney for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, who also has 25 years of experience in higher education, and most recently served as the President of Bennett College, a private four-year historically black, liberal arts college for women in Greensboro, NC. Dr. Fuse-Hall and I discussed some of the ways to make education more accessible and affordable. I know that’s one of the biggest gripes of our generation! She also shares her thoughts on the role that non-traditional institutions have on making higher education more attainable, as well as the importance of doing your research before choosing a school and weighing debt versus future gains. In other words, Tom has spent a large part of his career working to improve access & representation on a variety of issues that affect our communities. We discuss how we need discourse now more than ever, in order to engage diverse points of view so we can find better solutions to the problems our world faces today, and why the biggest mistake you can make is thinking that you have all the answers. #118: This is the first episode in a six-part series on ACCESS. Access is a hot topic these days, some want to restrict it, others want to protect it. But the fact remains that our communities need access to education, mentorship, money, sports, networking and strong representation and community leadership in order to grow. My guest is lead college basketball analyst for CBS Sports, former NBA basketball player, and Ohio State Buckeye, Clark Kellogg. Clark has benefited tremendously from the access and opportunities that were made available to him through athletics. But he also knows that in sports you have to learn to deal with adversity, which comes very handy in real life. As well as remaining humble when you excel. #117: My guest Mike Alfaro, rejuvenated an old school board game that is transcending generational and cultural divides. This traditional game in the Hispanic culture is called, Loteria. It’s been around forever, ok… at least a very long time and has been adapted over many generations. Now, Mike has created a more progressive version and called it Millennial Loteria. We also talk about the stereotypes that Millennial Latinos are fighting, along with the lesser known-not yet appropriated-cultural traditions that we both love, just like Loteria, celebrated in the Hispanic community.
