Our guest today is Carrie Bobb, the founder and CEO of Carrie Bobb & Co., and the CEO of hellojenny. In this episode, we cover everything from working for one of the largest commercial real estate companies to becoming a serial entrepreneur. We talk about how innovation, branding, and social media can take our game to the next level, how companies with a purpose can be heroes, and how Carrie's Law is changing the corporate landscape. Learn more about Carrie and her story at: www.growingcareersandcompanies.com.   “Creating good content is a muscle. The more you create, the more you think of to create.”   02:55 Carrie built a career as a retail broker. Over the years, she learned about the influence that social media has on people's lives, so she started a digital media company for retail properties called hellojenny.    Carrie talks about the importance of personal branding. People connect with people on social media, so it is crucial to add value to your personal handle even more than to your company's handle.   “I realized that businesses can be heroes too.”   12:42 At the peak of her career, Carrie had been working at a fortune 200 commercial real estate firm for 15 years.  While attending a prominent industry event in 2018, Carrie was drugged and raped by an executive from her firm, throwing her life and career into turmoil.   Carrie wanted to pursue a lawsuit, but she found a blanket arbitration clause in her contract, which meant that she had to waive her right to pursue justice in court.   But Carrie didn't give up - she went through mediation, and negotiated her way out of her confidentiality agreement. In the summer of 2019, Carrie lobbied Congress about the issue and in the end, Carrie's Law was introduced. This legislation carves out sexual assault and rape from arbitration language in employment contracts.   Prominent companies of all sizes & industries  have supported this initiative, which has the potential to impact the 60 million Americans are subject to these types of arbitration clauses. You can endorse the bill, and get more information & resources to share at https://thecarriebobbfoundation.org/.   “When we all team up and work together, we can accomplish a whole lot more. “   26:00 Carrie explains how the female consumer market is currently growing at a fast rate. We're expected to see the largest transference of wealth to women in history over the next 10 years.   Female purchasing power is huge. Knowing your consumer and customer and how they spend is very powerful.   The Final 3 Questions   34:50   What is the lesson that has taken you the longest to learn?   Carrie spent a long time second-guessing herself and being afraid of failure. Over the years, she learned to trust her own instinct and go for her dreams without hesitation.      What are the 2 principles from the Growing Careers & Companies Framework that resonate the most with you?   Purpose and impact. Carrie is driven to make a difference in the world and influence people.     What do you hope others take away from your story?   Don't wait too long to be brave. Everyone knows the restaurant industry is difficult.  From long, stressful shifts, to working the majority of nights, weekends, and holidays, to hyper-competition and low-profit margins, it takes a special breed to stick with it and succeed.  Then try doing that during a pandemic while having to open and close your business to react to ever-changing mandates!  Keeping inventory and staff while strategizing on the various programs and grants available is draining at best, crushing to most.  A recent report by the National Restaurant Association compiled the data and 110,000 US restaurants have permanently shut down in the past year!  And many others are hanging on a thread.  One Chicago chef found a way to not only survive but to give back to those in need. Chef & Owner Diana Dávila of the Logan Square neighborhood’s Mi Tocaya Antojeria has been staying extra busy by turning her popular restaurant into a food bank for the hungry for half of the week, with a focus on feeding undocumented hospitality workers.  The James Beard-nominated, Michelin-recognized, one-time “Chef of the Year” (by the Chicago Tribune), had one more lesson to learn and overcome - how to lead during a pandemic.  We sat down with Chef Diana at her creative Mexican concept to learn more about the experiences that shaped her, what her team is doing with the Todas Ponen project, and what’s next for this restaurateur who seems to always rise to the occasion. If you're a bar or restaurant, TappedIn is here to help. We offer free consulting to help you think through your options, strategies, technologies, and other restaurant solutions. Send us an email at support@gettappedin.io and take the first step in growing your businesses as we emerge from the pandemic.  This episode featured: Diana Davila, Chef & Owner, Mi Tocaya Antojeria Website: https://www.mitocaya.com/ Facebook: www.facebook.com/mitocaya/  Instagram: @mitocaya Instagram: @dianalachef Joseph Sheahan, Cofounder & CEO, TappedIn; Host, What’s On Tap Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/get_tapped/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/get.tappedin/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGfXXYruaQeVjOfejwN3Dgw/featured?view_as=public Twitter: https://twitter.com/Get_Tapped Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/whats-on-tap-industry-talk/id1509838638 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3kHK1oLknYMS6h90tELq9j?si=WSJkvnUnS9alHndxi11z0w LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/tappedinnovations

Words matter. A majority of our communication with clients and students requires the words we choose to convey the meaning. Today, we go behind the podium with Mark England, a coach, martial artist, world traveler, TEDx speaker, language geek, educator, lover of homemade plantain chips dipped in guacamole from the likes of Tocaya, and a man that prides himself on being a powerful verb, as opposed to a fragile noun. Mark is the co-founder of Procabulary, an educational platform that provides tools to help individuals and organizations to harness the power of words and make them work for us instead of against us. Procabulary teaches that, in the short term, what we think and say shapes our imagination and our feelings; in the medium term, our language heavily influences our personal stories; and, in the long term, our stories shape our realities by systematically editing out anything that doesn’t fit. *PS – you can save $100 on the Core Language Upgrade when you use the code “podium” at checkout!
