This episode of EMS One-Stop With Rob Lawrence is brought to you by Lexipol, the experts in policy, training, wellness support and grants assistance for first responders and government leaders. To learn more, visit lexipol.com. The American Ambulance Association recently held its annual AAA Stars of Life event in Washington, D.C. The American Ambulance Association's Stars of Life program celebrates the contributions of ambulance professionals who have gone above and beyond the call of duty in service to their communities or the EMS profession. While in Washington, EMS One-Stop Host Rob Lawrence interviewed AAA President Randy Strozyk, on the aims and objectives of the stars program and the 2023 Legislator of the Year. Rob also spoke with AAA Medical Director Dr. Gerad Troutman, who is AAA's first medical director. Finally, Rob chats with AAA Immediate Past President, Shawn Baird, on the Federal Balanced Billing legislation and the role that AAA and others are playing in protecting both the patient and EMS agencies. Top quotes from this episode “Every provider is out to make a difference, but to actually be recognized for it, which you don't often get the opportunity to have, makes it that much more of an honor to be selected for something like this” — Paramedic Erica Brockman “AAA stars and hundreds of thousands of people like you are the beginning of the healing process. When somebody is hurt, somebody is wounded, somebody is scared, it is the EMT that first touches that patient and then begins to transport into the healthcare system when the rest of the healthcare system can then kick in to what it does, but it would not start unless it begins with you.” — Senator Bill Cassidy “Think about when Covid hit, at 0200 in the morning, we were the ones that came, we were the ones that had to deal with a whole new level of challenges, not only Covid, but we had to deal with the fact that people didn't want to go to the hospital, so we were providing levels of care, interfacing, making sure that people had connections. I see that as a bright future to how EMS will progress in the next decade” — AAA President Rany Strozyk “I'm really passionate about patients called 911 looking for solutions to a problem and that solution is not always an ambulance to take them to an emergency department, so we try to impact their care differently, especially lower acuity patients, because we now have all the technology and tools to treat them in place with our paramedics or EMTs on site of even treating them utilizing a navigation program from the 911 system, the PSAP and maybe get them to an urgent care or virtual care doctor, where they can be cared for right in their home. Patients love it and the best thing is it really puts the ‘E' back in EMS and allows us to save those emergent resources that need those most.” — Dr. Gerad Troutman, AAA medical director “We will be coming back to Congress with a recommendation that ground ambulance not be rolled into the No Surprises Act. That (if we were included) would be devastating to access for care.” — Shawn Baird, immediate past president, AAA Episode contents 00:21 – Opening: Erica Brockman 01:02 – Introduction: Rob Lawrence 01:36 – Randy Strozyk, president, American Ambulance Association 05:12 – Key areas of legislation for 2023/24 08:07 – Presentation of Legislator of the Year: Senator Bill Cassidy 11:00 – Dr. Gerad Troutman, AAA medical director 17:00 – Federal Balanced Billing Committee: Shawn Baird 18:35 – Summary and close Additional resources The full bios for all of the AAA Class of 2023 Stars of Life can be found here. Fasting is often recommended as a solution to the metabolic health and weight management challenges menopausal women face. And while it can be an effective health tool when done properly, there are numerous pitfalls that active women can encounter when layering the stress of fuel restriction on top of other stress in their lives. This week we break it all down with autoimmune and precision medicine specialist Erin Faules, DO, who formerly worked with Wild Health before devoting herself to her own practice, Doctor Erin Health full time. Dr. Erin Faules (formerly Donaldson) graduated from Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine and is board-certified in Family Medicine. Her passion for changing healthcare was sparked when during her second year of medical school, she was diagnosed with lupus, a systemic autoimmune condition. She was told by her specialist she would be on medication to suppress her immune system for the rest of her life, and was literally laughed out of the office when she asked if anything she could do with her diet or lifestyle might change her outcome. Today, thanks to her own persistence and practice, her auto-immune antibodies are non-existent and she has not been on a pharmaceutical medication for over five years. North Dakota State wraps up non-conference play Saturday at Gate City Bank Field at the Fargodome as they host Central Arkansas out of the United Athletic Conference. UCA enters with a record of 1-1, losing to Oklahoma State in its season opener, before beating Texas College, an NAIA school, 70-2 last week. This is the second all-time meeting between the schools, the two teams met in October 2020 in Fargo. That was Trey Lance's final game as a Bison, rallying NDSU in the fourth quarter to a 39-28 win. There was less than 500 people in attendance as the game was held in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Forum's Jeff Kolpack and WDAY's Dom Izzo discuss the matchup and why Central Arkansas poses a real challenge to a 19-year non-conference home win streak that the Bison currently have.

Dr. Sandy, as many of her patients call her, is a native Texan. At the age of 34, Sandy enrolled in college and graduated from NTSU (now UNT) at the age of 39. She attended medical school at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, where she was, with good reason, known as “the Mom” of the class. Dr. Sandy and her husband, Don, moved to Eastland, Texas to establish her medical practice in December 1985. Several years later, after becoming board certified in Geriatric Medicine, she opened a geriatric clinic in Abilene in 2004. Then in December 2021, she accepted the position of Medical Director for Hospice of the Big Country and now limits her practice to patients in hospice care. She feels that the Lord has called her to care for the very frail and fragile patients who are in the “December” of their lives and to hold the hands of, and walk with, their family members on their journey. Dr. Sandy wears other hats besides her “doctor” hat, as well. She is a mother, a grandmother, and a great-grandmother, and is also a widow. The love of her life, Don, passed away in 1999. She is a published author and lecturer and has spoken in the United States, China, Germany, Croatia, Romania, Russia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Zambia on women's health issues. She has participated in and taught Bible lessons for “Ladies Classes” at congregations in those countries. However, one of her greatest joys has been to take all seven of her grandchildren on summer mission trips to Cambodia, China, Romania, Russia, and Zambia. She also took her visually-impaired grandson on a 13-state tour to play the piano for audiences in long-term care facilities for his “mission.” Last, but not least, in 2023, she became a circumnavigator of the world at the age of 81. Erin Donaldson is a board certified Family physician and graduate of the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. After starting her career practicing hospital medicine, she transitioned to her true passion, providing preventative care through wellness and disease prevention. While working in the hospital system, Dr. Donaldson developed a deep respect for the capacity of our healthcare system to treat acute conditions, but she also constantly witnessed the devastation that chronic disease creates. Dr. Donaldson's personal journey with Lupus, a systemic autoimmune condition, also helped spark her passion for changing healthcare. Since her diagnosis, she has made dramatic lifestyle changes to improve her nutrition, exercise, mindfulness, and more, and today no longer requires the use of medication to manage her condition. In Dr. Donaldson's current practice, she combines her personal and clinical experience to help patients take control of their own health outcomes. By using genomics, in-depth labs, and an understanding of each individual's unique lifestyle, she's able to formulate treatment plans that help her patients create sustainable change to optimize their health. You can connect with Dr. Donaldson via Instagram (@thedoctorerin) and her website. You can learn more about Wild Health and how to become a patient at wildhealth.com.
