Let's face it. Our waste habits are, well, pretty wasteful. Every single day, more than 27,000 trees are cut down just to make toilet paper. Meanwhile, the average disposable diaper takes over 500 years to decompose in a landfill, all while leaching harmful plastics and chemicals into the environment. And that's not even counting other single-use sanitary products like tampons, pads, and wipes. Put simply, our throwaway culture is a serious environmental problem.Enter today's guest: Miki Agrawal. A bold entrepreneur and creative disruptor, Miki has built a career out of challenging the status quo. She's the founder of groundbreaking companies like Thinx (revolutionary period underwear), TUSHY (modern bidets), and her latest venture, Hiro Diapers, a game-changing product designed to break down in landfills using fungi-powered decomposition technology. Hiro represents a major step forward in the battle against plastic waste, starting with a natural end-of-life solution for one of the most essential (and wasteful) products in parenting. In this conversation, we explore the hidden environmental costs of traditional diapers, the importance of slowing down to meet the moment, and why nature (hello, mushrooms!) holds the key to designing smarter, bolder everyday essentials.Show NotesHiro DiapersTUSHY BidetsAbout Miki AgrawalFour SigmaticPacha's Pajamas: A Story Written By NatureDo Cool Shit: Quit Your Day Job, Start Your Own Business, and Live Happily Ever After by Miki AgrawalDisrupt-Her: A Manifesto for the Modern Woman by Miki AgrawalBiophilic Solutions is available wherever you get podcasts. Period underwear came out in 2013 but has increased in popularity, largely as they claim to be better for the environment and easy to use. However, in January 2023 Thinx, a leading US manufacturer of period underwear who branded themself as a sustainable alternative to single-use menstrual products has just settled a lawsuit regarding the presence of PFAs, also known as “forever chemicals.” Now people are wondering if period underwear is really as good as companies have made them out to be. What is period underwear? What are forever chemicals? What alternatives are there to period underwear? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! As a result, the startup was competing against large incumbents like Procter & Gamble and Johnson & Johnson. In this intimate conversation with Raj, serial entrepreneur Miki Agrawal shares profound insights from her experiences in a darkness retreat and her journey of personal transformation. Miki is an author of "Disrupt-Her," and a trailblazing innovator known for founding TUSHY, THINX, and Wild. Named "Fast Company's Most Creative People in Business" and "Young Global Leader" by the World Economic Forum, Miki shares her evolution from a hard-charging entrepreneur to an advocate of "soft power" leadership. Her latest venture, Hiro Technologies, exemplifies this approach by partnering with nature to solve the global plastic crisis through breakthrough fungi technology. Beyond her business accomplishments, she's a devoted mother, musician, and thought leader in the space of authentic leadership and emotional intelligence.Key Topics and Takeaways:How five nights in complete darkness revealed the mechanics of our emotional patterns and thought loopsWhy "soft power" might be the leadership paradigm our world desperately needs right nowThe remarkable experience of watching yourself cry and finding joy in feeling everythingThe difference between leadership and mastery (and why understanding this changes everything)How prayer and gratitude can transform our relationship with uncertaintyWhy moving at the "perfect pace" means something different than what most people thinkThe profound shift from being a leader on a pedestal to being a guide on the pathHow vulnerability and power aren't opposites - they're partners in authentic leadershipThe way our souls might have chosen this human experience specifically to feel it allWhy feeling insecure might be one of the most secure things we can doThis conversation reminds us that true aliveness isn't found in avoiding the dark or chasing only the light - it's found in embracing every shade of the human experience. As Miki beautifully puts it, "I want to skid to death's door sideways, not in a well-preserved body, thoroughly used up, loudly proclaiming, wow, what a life!" The invitation is clear: what if instead of managing our emotions, we let them be our teachers? What if instead of fearing our vulnerability, we let it be our strength? This episode challenges us to embrace the full spectrum of being human, knowing that in this embrace, we find our most authentic power.Connect with Miki:Instagram: @mikiagrawalWebsite: https://mikiagrawal.com/Support Hiro Technology's Crowdfund Campaign: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/hirotechnologies/hiro-experience-plastic-eating-fungi-at-homeConnect with Raj:Instagram: @raj_janaSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/22Hrw6VWfnUSI45lw8LJBPLegal Disclaimer: The information and opinions discussed in this podcast are for educational and entertainment purposes only.

Brian chats with serial entrepreneur, social innovator, and author Miki Agrawal. As the founder of disruptive ventures Tushy, Thinx, and Wild, Miki is known for challenging the status quo and driving cultural change. She is also the author of best-selling books Do Cool Sh*t and Disrupt-Her. On the episode, Miki dives deep into her experience building multiple 100-million-dollar businesses. She also shares the questions she asks before starting a new business and opens up about how some of her hardest times have led to growth. Episode Highlights Mission-driven businesses do well and good. Miki defines a mission-driven business as a company that does good and well at the same time. As a member of a board on conscious capitalism, she's witnessed how companies that create socially conscious business models perform better financially, too. “It's a company that looks at the stakeholders versus just the shareholders,” Miki said. “Having not just a revenue-focused target but also an impact target is important.” Three questions to ask before starting a business. Before she starts a new business, Miki asks herself three questions: What sucks in my world? Does it suck for a lot of people? Can I be passionate about it for a really long time? “There's a saying that it takes 10 years to be an overnight success,” Miki said. “When I think about starting Tushy or Thinx or Wild, they are all things I could be really passionate about for a really long time.” 90% of success is action. Miki likes the saying that 90% of working out is putting on your running shoes and walking out the door. She attributes a similar action-first mindset to success in business, too. If you're inspired and take action, you may end up somewhere miraculous. “If you have an idea in your head, take the first step,” she said. “Talk is cheap. Action speaks louder than words.” Question everything. Miki attributes her success to her desire to creatively solve problems to the best of her ability. She also credits her culturally diverse upbringing in French Canada, where she grew up with a Japanese mother and Indian father in a Hindu-Buddhist household. “We got a chance to not conform,” she said. “When you don't conform, you get to really question everything. And when you get to question everything, you invent new possibilities.” Resources + Links Miki Agrawal: Website, Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest Books: Disrupt-Her: A Manifesto for the Modern Woman, Do Cool Sh*t Tushy: Website, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, Threads, YouTube  Thinx: Website, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Twitter Wild: Website, Instagram, Facebook  Brian Thompson Financial: Website, Newsletter, Podcast Follow Brian Online: Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Forbes About Brian and the Mission Driven Business Podcast Brian Thompson, JD/CFP, is a tax attorney and certified financial planner who specializes in providing comprehensive financial planning to LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs who run mission-driven businesses. This episode of Sustainably LB is a solo episode and I will be discussing my latest article for Remake – Are Companies Greenwashing Us Into Buying Toxic Products?Over the past few years there has been an increase in consumers asking: “What is in the products I am purchasing and using? What do these vague labels actually mean? And are these marketing claims actually legitimate?” The rise in this consumer concern? The access to improved chemical testing and the increase in the finding of PFAS or ‘forever chemicals' in many of our everyday-use products such as baby products, food containers, furniture and even our undergarments, specifically period products. No matter which products are used (tampons, pads, cups or underwear) all period products are used near or in highly absorptive and sensitive parts of our bodies. Recently a report surfaced that accused the underwear brand Thinx of having PFAS in the lining of its sustainable and organic period products. Read, right next to that delicate area. However, while the idea of forever chemicals and plastics making their way into our intimates is disturbing, this lawsuit against Thinx isn't about the potential harm of the products, but rather, it's focused on Thinx's misleading advertising.Show Notes:Greenwashing is misleading advertising that claims products are sustainable and safe when they are unfoundedBe leary of certifications and paid independent testing claimsEPA has identified over 12,000 types of PFAS It's mostly men who profit off of lax chemical safety standards, and it's women who sufferThere is a long history of chemicals being used in menstruation productsThere is little Federal regulation around products containing PFAS and toxic chemicals, especially when it comes to menstrual productsHandles:Instagram: Sustainably_LBLinks:Remake Article  – Are Companies Greenwashing Us Into Buying Toxic Products?New York State Menstrual Product Labeling LawCalifornia Law Regulating PFAS in Consumer ProductsEPA – PFAS ExplainedThinx LawsuitTo Dye For: How Toxic Fashion Is Making Us Sick – and How We Can Fight BackMusic:Ian AeilloCreative:Lauren BatesLogo:Meadow Hearn

As thoughtful consumers, we try to make the best decisions for ourselves and our families. And the bottom line is that we shouldn't have to twice about the possibility that the everyday products we use, from the cookware in our homes to our cosmetics, could pose any level of danger to our health and wellbeing. We should be able to have confidence in the brands that make these products, as well as in the role of the powers that be — specifically the FDA — in ensuring their safety. However, there are unfortunate realities behind many of these everyday goods; PFAS, better known as "forever chemicals,” being one of them. In today's episode of On Health, I address the threat of PFAS to our wellbeing as women, and to our children as I talk about the recent controversy that was brought to light from behind the shadows of some very misleading marketing by Thinx, a popular period underwear company. I dive into the long-term impact these chemicals can have on our health, the toxicity of labels like "organic" and "natural" in products that clearly contain PFAS, what products to be aware of, how to limit your exposure, and the importance of advocating for real, systemic change to keep ourselves, our families, and future generations as safe and healthy as possible. Join me as I discuss: The definition and history of PFAS and why they are classified as "forever chemicals" Where menstrual products fall under the FDA's regulatory category and what this ultimately means for their safety How much PFAS exposure we are getting from menstrual products and the health risks associated with this Tips and best practices to reduce exposure to PFAS when it comes to both menstrual products and everyday living Why the issue of these chemicals present in our products requires systemic change and what needs to be done moving forward Thank you so much for taking the time to tune in to your body, yourself, and this podcast! Today on the show we have Miki Agrawal, the serial founder behind some of the coolest companies you'll definitely know; the first being WILD a gluten-free pizza restaurant concept she launched 18 years ago, Thinx, the period underwear company that totally disrupted how we think about our period care and Tushy, the modern day bidet. This episode was so damn cool, and I know you're going to get so much out of this. Miki is the queen of disruptive marketing, we talk through how she takes a product and applies her framework to create intrigue and mystery which then creates buzz and more eyeballs. We also talk about what she did to raise millions of dollars and her advice for founders. And if you hang around to the end, we were lucky enough to meet her beautiful dad! Go check out the YouTube video on our channel. Miki is an absolute marketing genius, and her magic lies in pulling that intrigue and taboo element out of the products she is selling. Using that intrigue in a way that supports the clickbait or the interest of the conversation. You can really take anything and make it intriguing based on what you attach it to. It all comes back to creativity. Everyone is creative, we just don't necessarily spend the time taking the noise out of our brains to have time to think. People are so busy reacting to the world around them that they don't give themselves the space to be creative. Creativity requires spaciousness, time, and presence. Tuning into your creativity goes hand-in-hand with the changes in the narrative around things not being presented so perfect and crisp anymore. We're leaning more into sincerity and authenticity in 2022. This links back to the big rise in UGC over traditional commercials, something important to keep in mind for marketing moving into the future. Authentic recommendations and user-generated content perform so much better, commercials have started to feel phony. Do things DIY, and even if it's not perfect, that's the whole point. We are built for imperfection, that's the beauty of being human. I'm so grateful that you're tuning in today and I hope you love this episode as much as I did recording it.
