Chevez talks about the barbershop as an open and honest space for Black men, and the relationships nurtured there. That relationship, between the Black man and his barber, is often long-lasting, following them from adolescence to adulthood. Chevez also touches on mental health, the transparency clients often have with their barbers and stylists and keeping the barbershop a safe space for everybody. On this week's episode of Columbus Can't Wait, we had the pleasure of speaking with Quiqi aka A.S.L. Princess, a DJ and curator who has helped solidify some of Columbus' most pivotal spaces. Quiqi breaks down her experience as an adolescent in Columbus, how the communities around her allowed her the space to come into her own and led to creative opportunities, her experience in Columbus nightlife as a trans woman, and she later breaks down how Black folks in Columbus could be more receptive of its queer community and encourages participation in what is often seen as solely queer spaces, how we build collective power, and much more. A.S.L. Princess also hosts Character Witness on Verge FM. Hosted by Tareya & EhKees. Engineered at The Dreamcatchers Recording Studio. In this week's episode, we talked to 3/4 of the team behind Native Tongues, Tripp Fontane, DJ Bern, and our very own, EhKees. Native Tongues provides a space for creative expression of all kinds, in an artists' "native tongue." The trio discusses curating a space for creatives, especially Black creatives, in Columbus; what it means to be a sacred space while also having principles for what is allowed in said space, and why that matters; showcasing high-caliber talent' being a space dictated and owned by the community; the exclusivity of support for certain artists in the city; defining success outside of the mainstream culture; and much more. On this week's episode, we had the pleasure of speaking with Ralph Carter of We Are Linden. Ralph provides historical and cultural background on Linden, , and discusses advocating for Linden and offering resources, protecting the historically Black neighborhood and changes happening in the community, including the outcomes of gentrification and crime. Like many historically Black and/or working-class neighborhoods in Columbus, Linden has often been portrayed in a negative light. Ralph provides a positive outlook as well as context for some of the negative issues the community faces, and has an honest conversation about this space and where it can go from here. Welcome back to Columbus Can't Wait! We are in the lab again, kicking off Season 3 with friend of the show Kaleem Musa! Kaleem is a newly elected member of the Near East Area Commission who sets the season off with an energizing conversation on what's necessary for Black spaces to thrive. This season is focused on Black voters, the spaces they congregate in, and how those spaces are impacted by policy. When electoral candidates campaign for Black votes, many segments of the community are left out of the conversation. Season 3 explores the Black community's other gathering spaces—from the barbershop, salon, local bar, and more. Learn more about Columbus Area Commissions here. This week we welcome back friend of the show, and former grassroots congressional candidate, Morgan Harper. Morgan has been a fierce advocate for addressing police violence in Columbus and has used her social media platform to draw national attention to the police murders of Casey Goodson Jr., Andre Hill and Ma'Khia Bryant. Reimagining public safety was a focus of her 2020 congressional platform in which she offered the following reforms and community-based solutions: Empower Citizens and Communities Federally-fund community-based violence interrupters, community members called before the police, particularly in cases of mental health episodes Mandate civilian review boards to oversee incidents of police violence Federally-fund community mental health centers End Violent Policing Eliminate Qualified Immunity by clarifying the true intent of Section 1983 and protecting 4th Amendment rights Mandate standardized nationwide police training around deescalation End the 1033 Program that provides military weapons and machinery to local police departments Require departments to dismiss officers who kill unarmed civilians Increase Transparency and Accountability Require independent investigations and prosecutions of all police killings Report all incidents of excessive police force to a federal database Follow Morgan on Instagram and Twitter @mh4oh Learn more about Columbus Stand Up! at ColumbusStandUp.org For more information regarding Morgan's 2020 congressional platform visit her website MorganHarper.org Hosted by EhKees & Tareya. In this week's episode we speak with Casey Goodson Jr.'s mother, Ms. Tamala Payne, and the family's attorney, Sean Walton. Casey Goodson, Jr. was murdered on December 4, 2020 by Franklin County Sheriff's Deputy Jason Meade. Casey Goodson Jr. was outside his grandmother's home when he was shot and killed by Meade. The shooting has been ruled a homicide by the Franklin County Coroner's Office. This is what we know so far: A Franklin County Sheriff's Deputy was working with the U.S. Marshal's Southern Ohio Fugitive Task Force to look for a fugitive. Goodson was not the targeted fugitive and is not alleged to have committed any crimes and has no criminal background. He was licensed to carry a concealed weapon and Ohio does not prohibit the open carrying of firearms. Federal investigators, the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division, the FBI in Cincinnati and the Columbus police are now investigating the case. No one in the family saw Casey brandish a weapon. Casey believed in safe and legal gun ownership. We know that nothing has been presented by any agency that would justify why Casey was shot. We have not been presented with any documentation that supports this was a justified shooting. A witness from the family did see Meade point a gun at Casey's uncle, who was holding his toddler child at the time. The family was forced out of the house, held separately and treated as suspects instead of a scared and grieving family. Police attempted to keep Casey's five year old brother from his mother. Casey's phone is in police custody so we have no information regarding anything that would be answered by having access to his phone. There has not been any video camera or security camera footage of the shooting recovered at this time. According to media reports, there is no bodycam footage either. The family's request is that people across the country join the family of Casey Goodson in solidarity in celebrating Casey's life and making demands for justice for his death and the deaths of countless Black people who have been unjustly killed by police officers. SHOW YOUR SUPPORT: Contact the Franklin County Board of Commissioners office at (614) 525-5337 and request that they no longer FUND and/or offer contracts to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office. Franklin County Sheriff, Dallas Baldwin, is elected into his position. VOTE HIM OUT. Donate to the #JusticeForCaseyGoodson Go Fund Me to continue to offer love and support to his family. In Season 2 of Columbus Can't Wait we are focusing our attention squarely on the long history of police violence in Columbus, Ohio and the impunity of the Columbus Police Department. We believe families, we believe parents and caretakers, and we believe that they have the right to have their stories heard. We will speak with parents who have lost their sons to police violence, to elected officials, to activists, independent media outlets and community members doing the work to make change. In our first episode, we speak with Hyme Darson, a forerunner for justice, an agent for change on behalf of mothers whose children were tragically, violently murdered and slain at the hands of police officers. Hyme Darson is a single parent of four children including one daughter and three sons. Trae Darson, her third child, was murdered by Columbus Police Department officer Larry Whitman on August 30th, 2006 at Sunshine Int'l Food Market off of 161 on the North side of Columbus. In her first interview, Ms. Darson shares her son's story, including what type of a child he was, the runaround she received in the aftermath of her son's murder, the inaction taken by county prosecutors in the search for justice for Trae and the many discrepancies found in the official record and statements released by the CPD. Please listen and share her story widely. ***Please note that this conversation may be upsetting and difficult to hear and we encourage you to take in the episode in spurts, taking breaks as necessary.*** And as a note on the stance of Columbus Can't Wait: We demand justice for Trae Darson. We stand in solidarity with Hyme Darson and ask for officer Larry L. Whitman II to come forward with the truth and demonstrate accountability. We request that the case be reopened and all evidence become available to the Darson family, including Trae's personal items. #justice4trae #justice4traedarson ACTIONS: Please follow Hyme Darson on Facebook and Instagram for updates: Facebook:@justice4traedarson Instagram: @justice4trae Ms. Darson would also like to encourage those who have lost family members to police violence in Columbus to call us and share your story. Please leave us a voice note via our linktree or email us at columbuscantwait@gmail.com. #154 - Do you think your parents gave you a specific name so that you could be called something else? Something that doesn't really sound like your name, but it makes people comfortable, it's easier this way. I know my parents named me Maribel (Mah-REE-bel). That was always my name, until we moved to the U.S., and one day my dad picked up a call from someone wanting to know if MaryBell was home. My name would not return until the last quarter of my senior year in college, when I finally realized I had been trying so hard to fit in for so many years, that I had forgotten who I really was. Fast forward to now, I'm still struggling to correct people when they mispronounce my name. So I brought this episode back from season one, where my friend Tareya Palmer joins in to chat about one of the biggest things we have in common, people never know how to pronounce our names, and why "Justice" is more than just a word to her. The final election results are in and one thing is certain: Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will be the next President and Vice President of the United States in January 2021. Whether it's a response to the collective sigh of relief or the weight of all the work that is left to do (plus a new spike in Covid-19 positivity rates across the country), our energy was a bit lower this week as we recorded from home and reflected more deeply to the 2020 election results with a focus on local races. Our end clip this week starts off with “Fox News Sunday” anchor Chris Wallace asking Trump if he will accept the election results if he loses to Joe Biden during the first presidential debate in 2020. The question is then followed by a clip of Hillary Clinton in her 3rd and final presidential debate against Trump on October 19, 2016, in Hempstead, New York. Hosted by EhKees & Tareya. You Do Politics or Politics Do You. Meet our hosts Tareya and EhKees. Columbus Can't Wait is a show that revolves around civic and social responsibility in Columbus, Ohio. Aimed at arming everyday people with knowledge about how local and state government works and the ways in which the federal government impacts their daily lives, our goal is to break the barriers of entry and make politics accessible for anybody looking to be engaged. We don't believe that we can afford to just keep on telling people “go vote”, so we're doing everything we can to help the people understand what they are voting on. In regards to local Ohio politics -- we aren't saying we have all the answers (or even all the questions) -- but we are saying that Columbus Can't Wait to have these conversations any longer. Thank you for the Conversation, Courey and Tareya. I sat down with two of Columbus' boldest fashion icons at a diner on the south side of Columbus. Together the pair make up The Conglomerate (https://www.instagram.com/_theconglomerate/). We talked about the formation of the group, how their styles work together, but I really enjoyed as the conversation turned towards topics that you wouldnt expect two fashionistas to delve into. Also, somehow, in 2020, I'm still getting pressed about Kanye. Overall this was a great dialogue and I couldn't wait to share it with you! Country artist Tareya has been scaling the heights of the Canadian music industry since 2012 with multiple JUNO and CCMA award nominations and chart-topping singles earned through her time as part of the popular Country duo Autumn Hill. In 2017, this Calgary-born artist found a new voice as a solo singer/songwriter, with a refreshing new tracklist that blurs the lines between country, pop and R&B. With her debut single “Summer Wheels”, Tareya is exploring the edges of her music roots. This dashboard drumming summertime feel good tune is a celebration of her romance-filled introduction to southern beaches and her love for a man who digs classic cars. Expected in the fall of 2017, Tareya's debut solo album features lyrics crafted from a place of daring artistic expression and unforgettable melodies that veer off the rails to showcase the complexities of her heart-stopping voice. Tareya is now enjoying the opportunity to release her debut solo album. Her intent is to create an album that reflects the profound influence of powerful Canadian female artists including, Sarah McLachlan, Celine Dion, Shania Twain, Jann Arden and Chantal Kreviazuk who provided the soundtrack to her childhood and teenage years.
