Adriana Alejandre is a Latinx therapist that has taken on the challenge of demystifying the stigma of mental health in the Latinx community—her efforts have yielded national and global attention. Before Adriana became the face of mental health for the Latinx community, she was at a place where she was uncertain about her major, or the type of career she wanted to pursue. This helps quell that you don’t have to have everything figured out by a certain age. Adriana proves that you can have a significant impact on your life and career after any ambivalence. Once she entered into her profession, in true entrepreneurial fashion, she started to close the gaps between mental health and the Latinx community. It first started with the creation of her podcast, so her patients could have resources to the topics that were relevant to them. Unexpectedly, she received 100s of emails from people outside of Los Angeles asking for help to find a Latinx therapist. Unable to give every email the attention it deserved, Adriana found a solution: latinxtherapy.com. It’s a directory that helps anyone in the United States find a Latinx therapist in their area. Since the creation of the directory, Adriana has appeared on various national publications and her name is strongly associated with brining mental health the attention that it deserves. With the combination of her practice, podcast and directory, Adriana is living every Latinx therapist’s dream—to educate the Latinx population about mental health, and to provide resources that truly make a difference in one’s life. On this episode of Tamarindo, we talk about #therapy and how it can help when we experience #trauma, a timely conversation with recent events that have targeted the #LatinxCommunity. On August 3rd, the people of El Paso experienced one of the most harrowing attacks in recent history at the hands of a White supremacist that specifically targeted immigrants and Latinos. We pause to reflect on that tragedy and other recent policy changes that are adversely affecting our community. As we referenced, this article outlines (https://medium.com/@WeAreUnidosUS/the-shadow-war-to-reshape-the-face-of-america-7c540750e495) how the Trump Administration is deliberately attempting to change the face of America so it looks less....well...brown. At a time when folks in the White House want to tell our community that we don't belong, we know how important it can be to access mental health resources. As part of our commitment to our community's well being, we talk to the creator of the #LatinxTherapy podcast and directory, trauma Psychotherapist, Adriana Alejandre. We discuss trauma, the barriers to accessing therapy, and how Adriana's work is building a community of practice for Latinx therapists. You'll hear us talk about #affirmations, which are statements that are designed to create self-change and how using these can remind us all that #WeBelong. We're including a link on how to create and use affirmations so you can try it out for yourselves: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/smart-relationships/201403/affirmations-the-why-what-how-and-what-if (https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/smart-relationships/201403/affirmations-the-why-what-how-and-what-if) Latinx Therapy (https://latinxtherapy.com/) , is an internationally recognized directory and bilingual podcast that destigmatizes #mentalhealth & provides education to combat stigma through technology and mental health services. What safety measures do you have in place? As clinicians, we may not think about personal safety as a concern, and we certainly hope it’s never an issue, but we should be proactive and prepared. We’ve never had safety issues as a podcast topic before, but there have been many conversations about this in the STC Facebook Community. Adriana Alejandre is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Porter Ranch, CA. She has learned some practical things related to safety, so she’s here to share about screening clients and staying present around safety concerns. She has also had conversations with law enforcement officials and gotten some great tips about using apps and technology to help with this very important topic.
