Continuing on from our last Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips story we posted a couple of weeks ago, we're back for more of this legendary duo. Criminal: Lawless is the 2nd volume of the classic tale of gritty crime stories. In this one, the question is asked, how far would you go to avenge a family member you barely knew? How much of a motivator is the feeling of guilt? It's been a while since we covered an Ed Brubaker / Sean Phillips book, but we made it. This team was due for another round of coverage (even if we already did a 6-pack for them, that was ages ago), and we deliver here. Last volume, our main character, Dylan, was introduced to the literal demon on his shoulder who was forcing him to kill people. It was an adjustment to say the least... November 16, 1947.  That is when All True Crime Cases #26 was released to the public. Who wrote it? We don't know. Who drew it? We also don't know, but we can tell you what it's about: Totally true crimes that all children should definitely read about... This comic flows through about 5 different stories, ranging from mobsters with guns to murderous circus acts and cowboys. All of which, of course, was marketed towards kids, because of course murder and crime is what junior should read about. With this 5th volume, Rick Remender and Wes Craig's Deadly Class is now our longest running Arc Analysis saga, beating out Fraction and Aja's 4 volumes of Hawkeye. Considering that Deadly Class vol 1 was our first ever Arc Analysis episode, it seems fitting that we're here with it now. This volume is an introduction to the "new class" of characters, spinning out of the bloody, fiery end of the last volume. There are a lot of vampire stories out there, but something that sets the second volume of Killadelphia: Burn Baby Burn apart from most bloodsucker tales is transparency, among other things. The police know about the vampires! They know about them and even have a branch of the department that specializes in vampire crimes. When you take that element and add in the gritty writing, historical recreation elements, and cool cameos, you get Killadelphia.  What happens when an organized collection of vampires decide to otherthrow the city, and they aren't worried about being discovered? Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys debuted back in 1930 and 1927, respectively. And here we are now, in 2025, reading a crossover book from 2017 for our Arc Analysis series. Not going to lie to you here, we did not know what to expect when we opened up this book, but lets just say it was not at all this. It's a grounded, mature take on joint series of young adult adventure/mystery books. Where this story goes stretches murder, interrogations, drug deals, gangs, etc... This is a prime example of giving a chance to a title you aren't sure about: You never know how much you might like it! It didn't ALL start here, but at the same time, it kinda did. Riding high on Wolverine's popularity from the late 70's run, that expanded and revamped a villain from a Hulk comic into a mainstay with the diverse X-Men team, Claremont took him solo. And to do this, in 1982, he teamed up with up-and-coming young artist, Frank Miller. Together they created the Japanese backdrop for Wolverine/Logan stories for decades to come. In this 4 issue run, we get a good examination into what makes Logan tick, and how he balances being a good man and a berserker raging animal... And women. Hey, guess what? Guy Ritchie did a comic book! ... Kinda He didn't exactly write it himself but it sure is advertised as that. It's about a guy who works for a rich guy who takes in homeless guys to help with chores until Russian guys come for the rich guy and they meet a group of other guys who pull heists.  Still with us? There's a new Superman movie coming out! And on top of that, we did some research: One of the biggest inspirations for the new flick (although not the MAIN one, but still), For All Seasons, has now joined our list of Arc Analysis runs (essentially our own book club). It not often we get a chance to read comics from the ground up, but we lucked out with DSTLRY and their new brand imprint. Still the brainchild of David Steinberger and Chip Mosher, in May 2023. This is the house that has given artist and writers a fresh perspective, setting themselves up as the house that writers built: "focus on ethics, creator empowerment, and equity. Along with up-front participation by the founding creators, DSTLRY sets aside an additional 3% of company equity to be distributed among the creators who have projects released within the first three years.
