On today's episode, I talk to artist Jamie McKelvie. Born in London, Jamie came to prominence in the world of comics through his collaborations with Kieron Gillen. In 2003, the two started a comic strip in PlayStation Magazine that lasted for three years. This led to their book Phonogram in 2006, and its subsequent sequels, as well as Young Avengers and The Wicked + The Divine. He's also illustrated stories and designed characters for Marvel on books like Cable, The Defenders, X-Men, Captain Marvel and Ms Marvel among others and created art for bands such as CHVRCHES, Art Brut and Tegan & Sara. Most recently, Jamie has been writing and drawing his own series One for Sorrow, which is being published by DSTLRY! A lot of stuff going on in the world of nerds. In this episode we'll chit-chat about two marvel firsties: Xaviers Secret (which compiles an unlimited infinity series), and Doctor Doom & Rocket Raccoon. In the news, Captain Planet is back in comics, DSTLRY has a funny slip up, Jeff and Galactica are the cover of the week, Cineverse saves the previously doomed Toxic Avenger movie, Amazing Spider-man might be back to basics again, the DOGE doesn't wanna spend money on comic stuff, and more tomfoolery right here... ON FIC!
Jace and Rocky chat about the Independent books for the week of January 22, 2024. It's an incredible week as the guys had a tough time narrowing down which boosk to talk about and then even a tougher time picking their respective Book of the Week. Life from DSTLRY continues to be equal parts disturbing, action-packed and thought provoking a must-read for sure! Hyde Street gives us a holiday tale we wish had been in time for Christmas, but that doesn't lessen it's impact or the brilliant way it contextualizes the residents of Hyde Street and hints at their motivations. Deadly Tales of the Gunsliger also hints at some origins and motivations and we are excited to learn more in this slow burn western with perfect art. Revolution ( and Hour of the Wolf both continue to build to the Mad Cave summer crossover. In Bloom nearly takes Rocky's pick for favorite title of the week with it's eerie story and creepy art. Tin Can Society comes for close as Jace's pick with an absolutely shocking final page. Ultimately, Rocky chooses Time Waits for it's relatively happy and emotional ending which celebrates a life well lived. Jace picks Vicarious, which very much fits into the theme this week of what it means to live a laugh, what gives life meaning and how it can be taken for granted. Just an incredible week of books. Join us to hear about these titles and more!

Jace runs solo on the Indie Spotlight for the week of January 8, 2025. With get an amazing issue of Geiger with gorgeous art as our hero struggles to contain his powers which seem to be spiraling out of control. The creative team behind 100 Bullets, Azzarello & Risso, continue their masterful western Blood Brothers Mother at DSTLRY. Plus the second chapter of Juvenile and the debut of The Lucky Devils. The latter from the creative team of Charles Soule and Ryan Browne is a must-read, wirh fantastic art, an interesting premises and loads of humanity.
New Year's always has us looking inward, hoping for a fresh start. Creating resolutions, however, causes too much pressure, so we prefer to announce our intentions and free ourselves from potential regret if/when we don't achieve them. Helping us through the yearly reboot process in 2025 are Chip Zdarsky and David Brothers, whose new DSTLRYcomic Time Waits, done in collaboration with artists Marcus To and Marvin Sianipar, colorist Matt Wilson, letterer Ariana Maher, and editor Allison O'Toole, is the perfect excuse to contemplate our past, present, and future. The comic centers on Blue, who only wishes to tend his garden, love his wife Grace, and finally adopt Duke as his son. Unfortunately, Blue is a man out of time, and the future he came from is desperate to reclaim him and the items he stole. Time Waits delivers on John Wick levels of action and Primer levels of paradox paranoia without skipping heaps of human relationship drama. Chip Zdarsky and David Brothers are one half of the Mangasplaining podcast team, and we are delighted to discuss how their online comics discussions have shaped their comics-making process. Given the time of year that this episode arrives in, we found ourselves being even more introspective than usual, and Zdarsky and Brothers were more than happy to follow us into such philosophical quandaries. The first two issues of Time Waits are now available from DSTLRY, while the third and final issue will arrive in comic book shops on 1/22. Also, make sure you're following them online by subscribing to Mangasplaining. Today I'm joined by returning guest musician turned comics writer Scott Hoffman. Scott has been on twice before promoting his other projects Wag and Nostalgia and he's got a new book hitting shelves with DSTLRY called Warm Fusion, a futuristic sci fi/horror about a bleak New York future and the pitfalls of biotech gone wrong. We talk about the motivations behind this exciting new book, getting ready for a Spring Tour in the UK with his band the Scissor Sisters, and a unique vinyl record collaboration associated with the book with DJ Hi-Tek of Die Antwoord. From the publisher DSTLRY, the next-generation publisher redefining creator-owned comics and collectibles, is thrilled to announce Warm Fusion, a new sci-fi horror mystery series by writer Scott Hoffman (Nostalgia, Wag, member of pop icons Scissor Sisters) and artist Alberto Ponticelli (Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E., Orc Island). The series will debut this December, plunging readers into a nightmarish vision of New York City as biotech corporations unleash atrocities to rival the serial killers stalking the night. Half a century into the future, New York City has been devastated by crime, ongoing storms, residual radiation from a terrorist attack, and genetic mutations spurred by the medical innovations created in response. After a series of murders rip through the city's brothels, an escort named Vin Young, who cosplays as the Brothers Grimm's Snow White—and is one of the generation of deformed victims—pursues the killer, or killers, reluctantly joining forces with Jarrod Hannover, the lone cop assigned to the case. The two eventually arrive at a biotech megacorp developing a cellular metal called Warm Fusion—a pioneering technology meant to replace prosthetics limbs—and soon confront the sociopathic scientist Nicholas Fleischer, his monstrous alter-ego, Mr. Barnaby, and the hideous monster that he's been secretly developing. Warm Fusion combines the visceral body horror of David Cronenberg with the dystopian urban sprawl of Blade Runner, offering a chilling experience for fans of sci-fi benchmarks including Videodrome, The Thing, and RoboCop. “Warm Fusion is a deep dive into the grotesque possibilities of biotechnology and its impact on humanity,” says writer Scott Hoffman. “Alberto Ponticelli's art is transportive, blurring the lines between flesh, machine, and everyone caught in the gutters between. This is an evolution of the body horror classics I watched growing up, and perfect for a time when humanity is obsessed with (and achieving) provocative new levels of post-humanism.” PATREON We have a new Patreon, CryptidCreatorCornerpod. Jace and Rocky are back to chat about some of the independent titles for the week of October 9, 2024. We get a second printing of the first issue of Life from DSTLRY and #1 hits stands as well, action packed with an intriguing heist story set on a planet where life sentences are taken very literally, the story is told from two very different perspectives. Meanwhile, the Scarlett mini-series finishes up and it feels like her story will continue in the pages of G.I. Joe. Geiger gives us a set up issue as the forces of Vegas still are in pursuit of the titular character. Minor Arcana continues to showcase the excellent character work of Jeff Lemire, while Chip Zdarksy is also providing excellent character interplay in his very meta title Public Domain.

This week, we discuss Lanterns, the Transformers Compendium, Dark Horse & Marvel team-up, Mattina, Jim Lee commission pricing, Starman, DC's Absolute rumors, DSTLRY and Boom! changes, and Michael Zulli. Starring Ryan Higgins, Brock Sager, and Kevin Sharp.
The Beat's Heidi MacDonald returns to the podcast to talk about Penguin Random House's acquisition of BOOM! Studios and our expectations for San Diego Comic Con. MacDonald discusses the big PRH/BOOM! news, why the former may have wanted to acquire the latter, the big news ahead of San Diego Comic Con, where things are right now, DSTLRY's big move, how SDCC is shaping up, how unique SDCC is relative to other conventions, the big plans The Beat has for the event, her upcoming daily TV show, celebrating 20 years of The Beat, the evolution of comic cons, what keeps her excited about The Beat, and more. There are two corrections from the podcast. First, Filip Sablik's title at BOOM! Studios was actually President of Publishing & Marketing, not Sales & Marketing as I stated in the episode. Second, while Tiny Onion does a lot of design and production work for DSTLRY, Emma Price, Erika Schnatz, Jared K. Fletcher, Francesco Francavilla, and Lee Garbett have also done design work on a variety of individual titles and logos.
This week we're unfortunately discussing/navigating another comic community accusation of assualt. Next, we'll get into independent publisher moves with Boom! getting purchased, and a DSTLRY distribution change which gets us asking how are they doing on their mission to disrupt the industry. We'll also touch on the U.S. Mint making DC coins, Criminal casting, & Whoopi Goldberg's "The Change", before we get into our weekly issues, where we've got some doozies! We'll be talking about the latest relaunch of X-Men with a new first issue, creative team and some of the first pages post Krakoa! Greg and Andy also cover books like Barfly on Dark Horse, The Domain on Image (spin-off of Public Domain), and from Marvel Kid Venom, Moon Knight, Spider-Man Reign 2, & Werewolf by Night: Blood Hunt. On the Patreon, we'll watch the Hellboy and Watchmen Chapter I trailers and react LIVE, so join us over there if you're looking for movie talk.
