Today we sit down with David Steinberger and Chip Mosher to discuss the evolution of DSTLRY and the rapidly expanding world of Neon Ichiban, with a major focus on the newly unveiled Neon Ichiban 2.0 platform update. The conversation explores how their backgrounds at comiXology and BOOM! Studios helped shape their creator-first approach to publishing and collectibles, while also diving into the changing nature of fandom, curation, and premium physical media in modern comics culture. David and Chip discuss the philosophy behind Neon Ichiban's evolution, the challenge of balancing collectibility with accessibility, and why they believe thoughtfully curated experiences and high-end presentation still matter in an increasingly digital entertainment landscape. Today on Word Balloon, I'm talking with a creator who's carving out his own lane between nostalgia, genre chaos, and straight-up adrenaline storytelling, Curt Pires. From his breakout fantasy hit Lost Fantasy at Image Comics: a monster-slaying throwback with serious momentum thanks to artist Luca Casalanguida. To the hyperviolent sexy cosmic trip parody of Galactic at DSTLRY with Amilcar Pinna, Curt's work is all about big swings and bold humor. Now he's leveling up again with Fireborn, co-written with musician Franklin Jonas and drawn by Patrick Mulholland. It's a neon-charged, '90s comics and 32-bit video game fever dream about a billionaire's reckless son fused with a dragon egg in the heart of New York City. We'll talk about the evolution of his storytelling, the energy behind these books, and why Fireborn might be his wildest ride yet.

On this episode of Fantastic Forum we're talking about Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Galactic from publisher DSTLRY, and the animated movie All You Need Is Kill. Starfleet Academy is the newest live-action entry in the Star Trek universe, premiering on Paramount+, it follows the first new class of Starfleet cadets in over a century as they train aboard the USS Athena in the 32nd century. Created by Gaia Violo and co-showrun by Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, it attempts to blend classic Trek exploration with coming-of-age drama and interstellar conflict. Shifting gears to comics, Galactic from DSTLRY is a hyper-kinetic interstellar adventure written by Curt Pires with art by Amilcar Pinna. It's pitched as a blend of blockbuster sci-fi and lovers-on-the-run romance, following a roguish bounty hunter tasked with retrieving a runaway princess, only to find themselves tangled in a sprawling galactic war and unexpected emotional stakes. And on the big screen, All You Need Is Kill is a striking animated adaptation produced by Studio 4°C and directed by Kenichiro Akimoto. Based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka's influential sci-fi novel (the source material for Edge of Tomorrow), this version tells the time-loop story following warriors trapped in death-and-reset cycles as they fight an alien threat and inch closer to breaking their endless loop. We've consumed the media, let the thoughts percolate, and now we're ready to break down what worked, what didn't, and why each entry deserves discussion. Before Chip Zdarsky, Valerio Schiti and Frank Martin's Captain America shield slashes into stores this Wednesday, I had a chance to converse with Chip about the title, as well as his (and Rachael Stott, Tamra Bonvillain and Ariana Maher's) White House Robot Romance from DSTLRY – going into how it feels to write books with these storylines during this political climate, as well as a wealth of other stuff primarily about Captain America and how he views the character and the mythos. I've been a big fan of Chip Zdarsky since his Spectacular Spider-Man book way back in 2017, and he was the first comics creator I ever met in person, so getting to interview him was a dream come true. The conversation we had about these books, especially Captain America, was a real eye opener in a lot of ways. I even got to talk about one of my criticisms of Avengers: Twilight's ending with him and how that might influence how he writes Captain America, which certainly left me very inquisitive about how this book is going to turn out. I also asked about Gundam (obviously), which he covered with his friends over at his manga podcast Mangasplaining, so be sure to check that out. Captain America #1 hits stores this Wednesday, July 2nd. Check out Chip Zdarsky over at his substack! Synopsis for Captain America #1 While Captain America slumbered in ice, the world changed — for better and for worse. Steve Rogers awakens to a reality where battles are fought in the shadows through secrets and subterfuge, and villains aren't so easy to identify. When a fledgling dictator named Victor Von Doom conquers Latveria, Steve faces a critical decision: adapt to a new kind of warfare, or forge his own path? And what will the choice he makes in the past mean for his future? Experience the untold tale of Captain America's first encounter with Doctor Doom as Chip Zdarsky and Valerio Schiti team up for a game-changing new era of CAPTAIN AMERICA! Synopsis for White House Robot Romance When Chef-9 learns that Service-1 is scheduled for immediate decommissioning, he makes an unprecedented choice: abandon his station, break protocol, and flee with Service-1 into the streets of Washington, D.C. But what starts as a desperate act of defiance quickly spirals into an international crisis. Service-1's memory banks hold highly classified state secrets—ones that could tilt the balance of power between America and Canada. As paranoia mounts and the military mobilizes, the runaway robots find themselves hunted by government agents. Be sure to check out our previous interview with Chip here, where he discusses his other work, Public Domain. We delve into the comics industry, its history, and what it's like working in it today. The luxury of having a vast library of manga at your fingertips is priceless. Well, most of the apps aren't free, but reading as much as you want is a true blessing from the heavens. OK, most sites do cap your daily limit, but come on, having hundreds of thousands of series available to read whenever you want is incredible! I mean, some of them aren't translated to English yet so you have to go elsewhere to find them and... Look, can we- can we just agree that having digital manga is fantastic? Yes? Good? Ok, excellent. Dark Horse Comics agrees; so much so that they've partnered with WebToon to bring more of their series to the digital world, and have even teamed up with an upcoming digital manga marketplace created by DSTLRY to offer more of their library to digital readers as well! So, yeah, digital is great! Except, you know, you usually don't own the series you read digitally, so there's that and all... Sorry about the delay, but finally, here's the third part of my conversation with Stephanie Phillips. It's a fantastic wrap-up and contains plenty of new info on managing a writing career in comic books. One thing I took away from it was that you need to be prepared to do the work and don't fear that part either. Everyone who is succeeding as a writer finds a way to write their way across the finish line. Without that, you will not have a career. Remember, every completed piece of work starts a conversation that could open another door.

On today's episode, I talk to artist Jamie McKelvie. Born in London, Jamie came to prominence in the world of comics through his collaborations with Kieron Gillen. In 2003, the two started a comic strip in PlayStation Magazine that lasted for three years. This led to their book Phonogram in 2006, and its subsequent sequels, as well as Young Avengers and The Wicked + The Divine. He's also illustrated stories and designed characters for Marvel on books like Cable, The Defenders, X-Men, Captain Marvel and Ms Marvel among others and created art for bands such as CHVRCHES, Art Brut and Tegan & Sara. Most recently, Jamie has been writing and drawing his own series One for Sorrow, which is being published by DSTLRY! Jace and Rocky chat about the Independent books for the week of January 22, 2024. It's an incredible week as the guys had a tough time narrowing down which boosk to talk about and then even a tougher time picking their respective Book of the Week. Life from DSTLRY continues to be equal parts disturbing, action-packed and thought provoking a must-read for sure! Hyde Street gives us a holiday tale we wish had been in time for Christmas, but that doesn't lessen it's impact or the brilliant way it contextualizes the residents of Hyde Street and hints at their motivations. Deadly Tales of the Gunsliger also hints at some origins and motivations and we are excited to learn more in this slow burn western with perfect art. Revolution ( and Hour of the Wolf both continue to build to the Mad Cave summer crossover. In Bloom nearly takes Rocky's pick for favorite title of the week with it's eerie story and creepy art. Tin Can Society comes for close as Jace's pick with an absolutely shocking final page. Ultimately, Rocky chooses Time Waits for it's relatively happy and emotional ending which celebrates a life well lived. Jace picks Vicarious, which very much fits into the theme this week of what it means to live a laugh, what gives life meaning and how it can be taken for granted. Just an incredible week of books. Join us to hear about these titles and more!

New Year's always has us looking inward, hoping for a fresh start. Creating resolutions, however, causes too much pressure, so we prefer to announce our intentions and free ourselves from potential regret if/when we don't achieve them. Helping us through the yearly reboot process in 2025 are Chip Zdarsky and David Brothers, whose new DSTLRYcomic Time Waits, done in collaboration with artists Marcus To and Marvin Sianipar, colorist Matt Wilson, letterer Ariana Maher, and editor Allison O'Toole, is the perfect excuse to contemplate our past, present, and future. The comic centers on Blue, who only wishes to tend his garden, love his wife Grace, and finally adopt Duke as his son. Unfortunately, Blue is a man out of time, and the future he came from is desperate to reclaim him and the items he stole. Time Waits delivers on John Wick levels of action and Primer levels of paradox paranoia without skipping heaps of human relationship drama. Chip Zdarsky and David Brothers are one half of the Mangasplaining podcast team, and we are delighted to discuss how their online comics discussions have shaped their comics-making process. Given the time of year that this episode arrives in, we found ourselves being even more introspective than usual, and Zdarsky and Brothers were more than happy to follow us into such philosophical quandaries. The first two issues of Time Waits are now available from DSTLRY, while the third and final issue will arrive in comic book shops on 1/22. Also, make sure you're following them online by subscribing to Mangasplaining.
