Clinton, Layne, and Jon set out for Japan in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures 28 from Archie Comics! Then they look at four short stories, mostly published by Mirage: “The Crossing” from Usagi Yojimbo 10, “Choices” from Puma Blues 20, “Complete Carnage an’ Radical” from the second printing of TMNT 3, and “Not One Word” from the fifth printing of TMNT 1.
Reaching 1,200 episodes feels like the perfect excuse to look back at where it all began. Over the years, there have been conversations that made me laugh, made me think, and a few that deserved far more attention than they received the first time around. So this week, I'm opening the vault. Each day, I'll be re-releasing one favorite episode from the archives. Some are memorable classics, others are hidden gems, but every one of them still has something worth sharing today. First up: if the words Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles instantly got your attention, you're going to enjoy this one. Originally released as Episode 19 in early 2010, this conversation with Jay Mattingly takes a fun and unexpected look at DISC profiles through the personalities of everyone's favorite crime-fighting turtles. It's lighthearted, clever, and packed with insights you can still use today. Some business lessons come from spreadsheets. Others come from pizza-loving, crime-fighting turtles. I sat down with Jay Mattingly, our director of marketing, and somehow we ended up deep in the world of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. And honestly, it made more sense than you'd think. We were talking about DiSC profiles and Jay had one of those “wait a minute” moments. The turtles are basically a perfect personality map. If you remember them, you probably already know where this is going.Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatello weren't just different. They were different on purpose. And that's where this gets interesting for business owners. Every team needs a Raphael The fast decision-maker. He jumps in, takes action, and yes, sometimes ruffles feathers. That's your D personality. You may not always love the delivery, but you'll love the momentum. Don't underestimate your Michelangelo He's the fun one, the energy, the morale booster. High I personalities keep the team connected and engaged. Without them, work gets done, but it's a grind. Your Donatello keeps you out of trouble Detail-focused, thoughtful, and maybe a little cautious. That C personality is the reason your big ideas don't fall apart under pressure. Leadership doesn't always look loud Leonardo leads, but not by overpowering the room. He's steady, supportive, and steps up when needed. That S personality often becomes the glue that holds everything together. Who are the Turtles on Your Team? The turtles worked because they were different, not in spite of it. They respected each other when it mattered, even if they drove each other a little crazy along the way. Sound familiar? If your team feels a bit like herding turtles some days, you're probably doing it right. The goal isn't to make everyone think the same. It's to understand how they think so you can work better together. Because in business, just like in cartoons, the magic isn't in one personality. It's in the mix.
DEFENDANT: Leonardo DaVinci EVIDENCE: DaVinci Pinot Grigio SCENE OF THE CRIME: Renaissance Italy -- Hey friend — come hang out with us for a delightfully silly, slightly spicy stroll through art, wine, and history. We're sipping an easy Pinot Grigio, dreaming up melon-and-prosciutto pizzas, and taking Leonardo da Vinci on tour: his notebooks, love life rumors, flying machines, and that massive (now-ruined) horse project. We gossip about museum wine nights, the chaos of the Louvre, and Michelangelo's beef about buff bodies — all while drinking, cracking jokes, and treating the past like our most dramatic friend. If you love cozy, chatty episodes that blend pop-culture riffs with art history, this one's for you: we mix tasting notes (pear, green apple, underripe honeydew), travel stories, and scandalous little details about Renaissance Italy (including sodomy charges, apprentices, and sketchy patrons). It's like eavesdropping on two pals at the museum bar. Pull up a chair, pour a glass, and prepare for Leonardo's courtroom (sort of) — full of gossip, goofy hypotheticals, pizza plots, and a little wine-fueled wisdom. Ciao, cheers, and try not to get gooey over the melon slices on your pizza.
Layne, Clinton, and Jon find themselves in the dark of a bizarre zombie-ish story in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures 27 from Archie Comics! Then they look at a story from Kevin Eastman, Mark Bodé, Bruce Lee, and Chuck Norris in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 18 from Mirage!
Layne, Clinton, and Jon are captured by the Keeper in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures 26 from Archie Comics before visiting feudal Japan for the delightful Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 17 from Mirage!

Layne, Clinton, and Jon go where few Turtles fans have gone before, the live tour from 1990-91, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Coming Out of Their Shells Tour!
Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay spent the evening playing pool and arcade video games at the Foot Lair before jumping on to talk "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." Andy kicks the episode off by talking about the delicious pizza in the movie, and how it reminded him of the time he was physically tossed out of a $1 slice joint in New York. Then the fellas try to make sense out of one of the most befuddling kids movies that for over a decade was the most successful indie movie of all-time. On paper, none of it should work, but thanks in large part to the genius design of Jim Henson's last effort in film, the ridiculously cool costumes brought the comic book-turned-cartoon to life. Pairing the turtle designs with Hong Kong's legendary Golden Harvest production team brought top tier martial arts to the big screen with a grimy rain soaked late '80s New York as the backdrop. Not only did Raph and the gang look lifelike, but they faced off against one of the coolest looking villains ever with Shredder's incredible design. Toss in Degen Cinema royalty, Elias Koteas, as the bulky Casey Jones, and you have an undeniable children's classic that has six year olds, and grown degens shouting T-U-R-T-L-E POWER.

Cowabunga!

If you're a fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, you need to check out Turtle Power: The Definitive History of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Directed by Randall Lobb, this 2014 documentary dives into the 30-year legacy of Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael—covering their humble indie comic origins, the animated series phenomenon, blockbuster films, and the cultural impact that made the Turtles a global franchise. Featuring interviews with co-creators Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman, plus cast and crew from across the TMNT universe, it's an essential watch for anyone who grew up shouting “Cowabunga!”Learn more about the documentary at definitivefilm.com.
For the past year, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise has been as exciting and essential as DC's Absolute Universe or Skybound's Energon Universe. Writer Jason Aaron and artist Juan Ferreyra have built an unmissable monthly comic, not to forget the numerous other splinter titles and crossover minis. Shortly before San Diego Comic-Con International, The Hollywood Reporter announced Aaron and Ferreyra's departure, and we were a little heartbroken. Their time on the book was too brief, but if they must go, the news that cartoonist extraordinaire Gene Luen Yang and lifelong Turtle maniac Freddie E. Williams II eased the pain some. One of our missions for this year's San Diego Comic-Con was to return with more news regarding the TMNT baton pass between Aaron and Ferreyra and Yang and Williams. After moderating IDW Publishing's “The New Era of Turtle Power” panel, we retreated to the Hilton Bayfront, where we had a lengthy conversation with Gene Luen Yang about his passion for the Turtles and how he would apply it to the series, starting with issue thirteen. Also discussed at San Diego Comic-Con, Andrew Joustra, the script coordinator for the animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, will write an arc for the newly announced Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, bringing the iconic Fugitoid character to the latest iteration of the TMNT universe. As passionate fans of Fugitoid ourselves, we had to trap Joustra in a media room for a deep dive into his take on the character and why he put so much of himself into the troubled fugitive android. Today, you get two podcasts for the price of one. With Gene Luen Yang, we discuss where we find the Turtles when his story begins, how they've grown throughout the Jason Aaron and Juan Ferreyra run, and why a certain new antagonist was necessary for his story. With Andrew Joustra, we explore the Fugitoid concept, his relationship with the Turtles through the various franchise incarnations, and why this story is so deeply personal. Be sure to follow Gene Luen Yang on his website, Blue Sky, Instagram, and TikTok. Also, follow Andrew Joustra on his website, Blue Sky, and Instagram.
