From violent seizures to speaking in unknown tongues, firsthand accounts of exorcisms paint a chilling picture of supernatural encounters that defy rational explanation. Even as witnesses struggle to reconcile their experiences with scientific reasoning, their stories remind us that some mysteries remain beyond our comprehension. (They Witnessed a Demonic Possession) *** The legend of the mermaid is as vast as the oceans themselves, with each culture adding its own twist to the tale. From guardians of the sea to agents of doom, these mythic beings hold timeless appeal and danger. We'll explore the fascinating origins and dark fates that surround those who encounter these creatures from the depths. (The Siren's Call) *** In August 1952, the small Kansas town of Ashley vanished into thin air, taking all 679 residents with it and leaving behind only a massive burning fissure in the earth. In the days leading up to its disappearance, residents reported increasingly terrifying phenomena: a mysterious black hole in the sky, children speaking to their dead relatives, and finally, the return of all the town's deceased in a wall of fire that turned night into day. The last desperate phone call from Ashley told of burning apparitions seeking out the living, before the entire town was swallowed by the earth, leaving behind one of America's most chilling unsolved mysteries… but is there any truth to the story? (The Question of Ashely, KS) *** In the quiet hours of Halloween night 1977, a 19-month-old baby vanished from her crib while her parents slept nearby, launching a desperate search that would end in unimaginable horror. Little Nima Louise Carter's body was found a month later in an abandoned refrigerator, joining a haunting pattern of similar crimes that had terrorized the small town of Lawton, Oklahoma. While the suspected killer would later die in prison for another child's murder, Nima's father would spend decades wrestling with endless "what-ifs" before finally finding peace through forgiveness, though the official case remains unsolved to this day. The date was October 31st, 2008 - Halloween night. A young Seattle woman, 24-year-old Arpana Jinaga had plans that evening to participate in a Halloween party at her apartment complex. Several of her neighbours and Arpana would decorate their apartments and open their doors to guests who would pop in and out over the course of the evening. She was spotted in the early morning hours, around 3 a.m., returning to her own unit to get some sleep after a night of socializing - and this would be the last time she would be seen alive. A few days later, a neighbour would discover Arpana's apartment in shambles, with the front door kicked in. Inside the unit, was the body of the young computer programmer, doused in motor oil and scrubbed clean with bleach - and now, every guest in attendance of the Halloween party was a suspect. Two individuals in particular would stand out to police, because of their past criminal history, relationship with the victim and DNA evidence found at the crime scene. However, despite a lengthy trial spanning almost a decade, the murder of Arpana Jinaga remains unsolved to this day. We're going to talk about the night of the murder, the vast amount of evidence found at the crime scene, and how we got to this point, where a killer has so far walked free. The last thing on your mind is probably home heating oil while summer is still in full swing. But with cold nights around the corner, now is the time to start preparing for rising heating oil prices! On this episode, I'm taking a look at past pricing for home heating oil, what influences oil rates, and when YOU should restock home heating oil before the winter. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... Historic home heating oil costs [1:51] Influences on the price of home heating oil [3:58] When is the best time to buy home heating oil? [5:36 Understanding the rising costs of oil Last Halloween, home heating oil prices hit a record high of $5.40 per gallon, and I've been keeping my eye on them ever since. Considering they were under $2 per gallon for most of 2020, I was curious to see why there's been such a spike. Obviously the price of home heating oil is based on supply and demand. I knew the demand was good because the majority of us were quarantined in our homes through winter 2020. However, the cost of crude oil is a major factor for home heating costs. Because no one was traveling or driving much during the pandemic, the price of oil collapsed in 2020, and crude oil got down to a historically low $30 per barrel. But post-lockdown, oil has been on an exponential rise. In fact, 2022 saw prices as high as $100 per barrel thanks to the Ukraine War. In 2023, crude oil prices dropped to around $70 per barrel, but a recent surge has seen barrels of crude going for no less than $85. Are more price hikes in store? Should you restock on home heating oil now? Listen to this episode to find out! Ghosts, Nazis, and mutated bears! Oh my! Last Halloween we picked our favourite horror movies from each decade. Spoilers for the following: Multiple Maniacs (1970), The Crazies (1973), The Stepford Wives (1975), Hausu (1977), Martin (1978), The Boys from Brazil (1978), Prophecy (1979). Edited by DJ Panda. Over the last year, I've been joined by other storytellers who've read stories for you here on the podcast. You may remember the name Rob MacWolf — werewolf hitchhiker, who's recorded 12 episodes and written 14, including a collaboration with another Friend of the Fireplace, as podcast alumni are called. Last Halloween, he produced the “Ghost of Dog” series of stories, and recently curated some romantic episodes from the back catalog. He's been staunch ally of the podcast and a loyal friend to the community of writers that sprang up around it, so I'm very happy to announce that Rob MacWolf — werewolf hitchhiker will be joining me as co-host of The Voice of Dog. He'll help with selecting, producing, editing and introducing episodes starting next week, and he's recently started the podcast's official Twitter account, @voiceofdogpod, where new episodes are announced with links to the authors and their galleries — and who knows, maybe some other announcements. I'm glad to have Rob aboard, I'm excited to see what fresh ideas he'll bring to the show, and I hope you'll join me in wishing him godspeed. thevoice.dog | https://www.thevoice.dog/apple (Apple podcasts) | https://www.thevoice.dog/spotify (Spotify) | https://www.thevoice.dog/google (Google Podcasts) If you have a story you think would be a good fit, you can https://www.sofurry.com/view/1669084 (check out the requirements), fill out the https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1z81u5O2i8PWSfEpzaVhHeTjrp1kKP7TX?usp=sharing (submission template) and get in touch with us on https://twitter.com/voiceofdogpod (Twitter).
Last Halloween, Matt Henderson went to the Mckinley Mansion to explore with his friends, but they never showed up, leaving him to explore the empty mansion on his own. Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy return for the weekly movie reviews with the lighter lineup but no less lively a discussion. They look at the various scenes of a writer's marriage in Mia Hansen-Love's Bergman Island and the history of a legendary band in Todd Haynes' documentary, The Velvet Underground. Bobcat Goldthwait and Dana Gould go on with their comedy tour after a bad car accident in the documentary, Joy Ride. This past year we made the rounds of our local neighborhood. We made sure to only approach homes that had their porch light on, which was the unspoken rule. Our night had almost come to an end when we reached a home that had been vacant for the last two seasons. It was the largest within our neighborhood, towering at two stories when all others only had one level. It was a large, brick Victorian monstrosity that may have once been beautiful but the landscape had long needed work. It was the house most kids made stories about and when we saw the dim glow of that yellow bulb I was unsure of letting my children approach. My oldest begged to ring the doorbell and my youngest simply wanted more candy. I was outnumbered and relented at their pleas. My wife sat within the idling vehicle while I followed close behind. The two made their way up the steps and I waited at the bottom. Like always, I reminded them of what to say. My oldest son held his brother's hand and pressed the lighted button. Ringing, much like church bells, echoed from within the house for a moment, before returning to silence. After a few seconds, they turned to me with questioning looks.
In a surprising social media post, Burger King UK encouraged customers to order and buy food from its archrival McDonald's and other competitors. The Twitter post was an appeal to customers to support all restaurants that employ thousands of workers. Burger King posted the tweet ahead of a second lockdown in the country. Aside from McDonald's, Burger King also mentioned KFC, Pizza Hut, Five Guys, Greggs, Taco Bell, and other fast-food chains in the post. With the tweet, Burger King aimed to promote solidarity among fast-food chains amidst the pandemic. The food industry in the United Kingdom has been hard hit by the lockdowns. In late March, restaurants had to stop dine-in services because of government restrictions. Unemployment rates increased when a number of food businesses went out of business. Burger King encouraged its customers to go to the drive-thru, get takeout, or order home delivery in order to help those in the restaurant industry. The support, according to the company, will not only help restaurants survive, but also help restaurant employees keep their jobs and income. Burger King's post has received over 170,000 likes and thousands of comments, most of which were positive. Many users lauded the fast-food restaurant's statement as classy. However, others commented that the statement is a marketing ploy meant to benefit multinational corporations and put small local stores at a greater disadvantage. Meanwhile, Burger King US took a more upfront approach to promote its business. Last Halloween, the company promised free Whoppers to customers who visited closed down stores once run by competitors McDonald's, Wendy's, Sonic, and Jack in the Box. When customers used the Burger King app to confirm that they were within 100 meters of a competitor's closed down store, they got a coupon for a free Whopper.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thejayarugashow/message

Abby Howard grew up in North Carolina and has been drawing comics since age 13, spending her summers locked away in her room working on one project or another, convinced this would be the one to get her to the Big Time. She went to McGill University to study Evolutionary Biology, but after being a contestant on the web reality show Strip Search, she was able to follow her dreams of becoming a cartoonist, and ditched all that book learnin'. She now works full time between The Last Halloween, Junior Scientist Power Hour, and various side projects-- including her two podcasts, The Sistertime Podcast (a show about forgotten children's shows and movies, co-hosted by her sister Maddie) and Scared Yet (a discussion of the horror genre co-hosted by fellow webcartoonist, Kris Straub). She likes cats and doesn't get out much. She has seen every horror movie. Check our her work! Time Codes: 00:00:29 - Introduction 00:02:49 - Listener mail 00:07:37 - The Last Halloween 00:38:46 - Urbanity Planet 00:57:39 - Checking in with Jim McClain and Paul Schultz 01:11:46 - Odysseus the Rebel 01:40:27 - Wrap up 01:41:31 - Contact us For the October webcomics episode, Sean and Derek check out three very different webcomics, the first of which highlights the Halloween season. Abby Howard's The Last Halloween is a combination of creepy illustrations and offbeat humor including a monster apocalypse, an ebullient vampire boy, a social media-addicted ghoul, and a grieving father who crossdresses in his dead wife's clothes. The guys enjoy the fun and meandering story, although Derek wonders if the storytelling could be a little more focused in places. Next, they look at Theora Kvitka's first webcomic, Urbanity Planet. This is a relatively new story, beginning in February of this year, so readers can experience the artist's online voice as it develops. It's a series of vignettes centered on recent college grads who can't find work on earth and, as a result, move to the planet N!#ult0n to earn a living. Filled with quirky observations, the webcomic is an alternate reality glimpse into the dilemma of millennials. Before they look at the month's final webcomic, the guys check in with Jim McClain and Paul Schultz to get an update on their in-the-works webcomic, Poe and the Mysteriads. Things are moving right along, although Jim expresses a mea culpa. Click HERE for new sample art! Finally, Sean and Derek discuss the completed webcomic, Odysseus the Rebel. This is Steven Grant and Scott Bieser's adaptation of the Homeric classic, but one that doesn't feel the need to be comprehensive or "true" to the original. That's what the guys appreciate about this adaptation, Grant and Bieser's ability to take the essence of The Odyssey and translate it into a contemporary voice. And with its emphasis on storytelling, Odysseus the Rebel demonstrates a particular metafictional bent.
