You probably know Adam Hughes from his fun and sexy covers that adorn comics nearly every month. But did you know he's spent nearly 40 years in the industry, working with virtually all major and indie publishers? Adam's first regular gig was on Mike Barr's Maze Agency from Comico. He then did a short run on Justice League America (with a continued cover run) before moving to Atlanta to join Gaijin Studios with artists like Brian Stelfreeze, Cully Hamner, Dave Johnson, and Tony Harris. He redesigned and reintroduced Ghost for Dark Horse's Comics Greatest World initiative. Adam went on to write and illustrate the Gen13: Ordinary Heroes miniseries for Wilstorm, before starting his famous cover run on Wonder Woman, Tomb Raider, and later, Catwoman. Some of his most recent interior work includes Before Watchmen: Dr. Manhattan and Betty and Veronica for Archie Comics. You can follow AH! on his website, adamhughesofficial.com, or Instagram @atomhues. ____________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you like this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. In anticipation for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, we read the first comic written by Ta-Nehisi Coates with art by Brian Stelfreeze. This was a very intricately written story that is a great addition to the character. Following the events of Secret Wars, T'Challa is struggling to keep the nation on his side when a revolution is trying to overthrow his rule. So, this week, it's Matt's birthday recording, and as opposed to Will, who picked stuff based on gut instinct (and who must have had a stomach ache based on what we got), Matt went with three stories from his younger years that he remembers really liking. The results are considerably better. We get some Grant and Breyfogle, John Ostrander writing a comic within a comic, and rare Brian Stelfreeze interiors. The Nobody (Batman: Shadow of the Bat # 13) Dark Genesis (Detective Comics V.1 # 622-624) Fool's Errand (Detective Comics V.1 # 726) Check out our current ranking list at www.comicsxf.com/batchat-rankings/ Thanks to Geri Nonnewitz for our podcast logo Follow the show on Twitter @BatChatComics and support the show on Patreon at www.patreon.com/batchatwithmattandwill

In today's episode, the first of our Black History Celebration, we cover the beginning of the 2016 Black Panther run, and also a quick synopsis of the beginning fo the 2018 story as well. (Haha, we had a bit of a mixup due to the similarities of the cover art for the two runs.) This series is a bit different than many of the series we cover. There isn't as much superhero fighting. Instead there's a lot of different groups fighting for their views of what Wakanda needs most. As we take up our path in life, we meet people along the way that turn out to be our teachers and mentors. My guest Rob Jones has been taught by and mentored by some of comic's greats. Rob learned from Brian Stelfreeze how to color and interned with Dick Giordano. Rob has work on comic books, children’s books, books covers and the occasional newspaper strip. He is also is the 2018 Image winning campaign for the Library Foundation of Sarasota County. Today Rob and I talk about his mentors, how he got involved in children’s books including one he is working on now based on his dog, titled Rambo To The Rescue. He currently has a Kickstarter running until April 3rd for the second issue of his three part series Highspot. It is the story of stunt performer Kate Carter who loves adventure and archaeology. In issue #2 Kate and the gang are on their way to find the remains of Alexander the Great. Why does Rob reference Theodore Roosevelt as a heroic model in the series, and why did he decide to make Alexander The Great the focus of Kate’s mission? We also talk about his other comic book collaborations on Strong Will and Mine. Plus Rob discusses how other creators who paid it forward inspired him to do the same. We close our discussion Kicking Back with the Creator to learn more about Rob. Special Offer for Creator Talks Listeners: If you back Rob’s Kickstarter and get a physical reward he will do a free 6 x 9 head/bust sketch of any character you would like if you mention the interview. Then, in the General Ed segment (at 8:20 ), a look ahead at comics we’re anticipating in 2018 with Matt Lune. Matt’s the host of the “That’s the Issue!” podcast, the Comics Syllabus’s new partner podcast on alternating weeks. You can check out the rest of the conversation between Matt and Paul about the year ahead on next Tuesday’s “That’s the Issue!” This week’s Close Read (at 56:00 ) is “Golden Kamuy” by Satoru Noda (Viz), a seinen manga series set at the turn of the 20th Century about the Immortal Sugimoto, a veteran of the Russo-Japanese war, and Asirpa, a girl whose Ainu (a Japanese indigenous culture) expertise with the wild forest setting helps the two protagonists in a hidden-treasure chase against dangerous criminals. Images to go with Paul’s discussion are at the link at the top of these shownotes. On the Syllabus segment (at 1:35:00 ), Paul introduces his Reading Schedule, an invitation (or an assignment, if you like), to find something to read along with Paul and join the discussion. This month, we apply the reviewer’s questions from Ann Hornaday’s Talking Pictures (Basic Books) — what are the creators trying to accomplish? did they? and was it worth trying? — to the effort to “read widely” this year. On the Syllabus this month: Manga (Mondays): “A Silent Voice” by Yoshitoki Oima (Kodansha) and “Battle Angel Alita” by Yukito Kishiro (Kodansha). Alt TPB (Tuesdays): “Crosswind” by Cat Staggs and Gail Simone (Image); next: “Eternity” by Matt Kindt and Trevor Hairsine (Valiant) World/BD (Wednesdays): “Largo Winch” v1 by Phillipe Francq and Jean van Hamme (Cinebook); next: “Valentine” v1 by Vanyda (Europe Comics) Throwback (Thursdays): “Strangers in Paradise” by Terry Moore (Abstract Studios), volumes 1-2; next: “Miss Fury: The Best of the 1940s” by Tarpe Mills, edited by Trina Robbins (IDW Library of American Comics) Family (Fridays): “I Am Alfonso Jones” by Tony Medina, Stacey Robinson, John Jennings (Lee and Low); next: “Science Comics: Flying Machines” by Alison Wilgus and Molly Brooks First Second) Superheroes (Saturdays): “Action Comics” by Dan Jurgens and artists (DC); next: “Black Panther” by Ta-Nehisi Coates and Brian Stelfreeze and other artists (Marvel) Sequential/Small Press (Sundays): “The Green Hand and Other Stories” by Nicole Claveloux (NYRC); next: “Psychology” by Danny Oppenheimer and Grady Klein (Norton) Subscribe and follow the Comics Syllabus podcast on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, or Soundcloud, or copy this RSS feed to your podcatcher: http://feeds.soundcloud.com/users/soundcloud:users:235183739/sounds.rss or you can find archives for this podcast (previously named “Study Comics with Paul”) here: http://studycomics.club/ Join the discussion on the Comics Syllabus Facebook page: http://facebook.com/ComicsSyllabus or Follow Paul on Twitter: https://twitter.com/TwoPlai or leave your comments here on the showpage. Visuals for this episode are at: http://thepaullist.com/post/154178811035/black-panther-by-coates-stelfreeze-sprouse Paul discusses 'Black Panther,' written by Ta-Nehisi Coates and drawn by Brian Stelfreeze, Chris Sprouse, and Karl Story, with colors by Laura Martin and letters by Joe Sabino, from Marvel Comics. Paul talks about the first seven issues or so of the recent series (2016), although with only minor spoils so the episode is friendly for readers and non-readers. Paul touches on conceptions of nationhood, Ta-Nehisi Coates writing comics, contrasts with Christopher Priest and Reginald Hudlin runs, the complexities of leadership, portrayals of peoples, and a little politics. When an award-winning author on African-American identity takes on one of the most famous (and currently particularly visible) black characters in comics, the expectation level is set sky-high. Black Panther #1 from a couple of months ago sets the scene for an extended, and clearly multi-faceted, story which author Ta-Nehisi Coates clearly approaches with no suggestion he's planning on dumbing down for comics. Together with artistic collaborators Brian Stelfreeze and Laura Martin, he kicks off with a first issue that jumps straight into politics, relationships, history and tradition, and some good old-fashioned fisticuffs to keep things moving. How does it all stack up? Listen and find out. And in honour of Coates' transition to comics from other writing fields, Jared's 3&1 is on exactly that - authors who made their name elsewhere first. No spoilers, but his selected Worst One Ever has been mentioned on the show before. And he's right - he's a terrible, terrible comic writer.

A Shot in the Darhk! In what should have been a pretty slow week for comic fans, we have Arrow silencing a main cast staple, the Suicide Squad movie isn't as done as it was before BvS, the Emerald City Comic Con and Image Expo gave us more comic book news, and Black Panther #1 hit spinner racks everywhere (note, we do not condone the use of spinner racks, they ruin comic books and thus should be destroyed). Arrow Fallout Thoughts on last week's big Arrow Death (Spoiler) took an arrow to the chest, did the right character die for the story? Is this the character in “the grave” or do we have more carnage to look forward to as season 4 wraps up? Suicide Squad Reshoots Suicide Squad is back in the editing bay as they try to pump up the “humor” and tone of the movie in response to the Batman v. Superman criticism of being “too dark” and “utterly joyless”. Is it too late for Warner Bros.? Should Disney step in a buy DC Comics to make one ultra shared universe? Two conversations with extremely talented — and patient — artists conducted at Baltimore Comic Con. Both were also prefaced by waiting quietly for their signing lines to slow down before taking time out of their signing schedules for a chat. In the case of the legendary Marvel artists Jim Starlin, it was a long, unbroken line of autograph seekers carrying armfuls of Silver Surfer and Warlock comics to sign. With most, Starlin simply signed and small talked, tossing off a few notes about each. On occasions, however, a fan would present a copy of Captain Marvel and discuss the book’s impact on a personal level, how the story of the hero’s battle with cancer impacted them as a young reader — a testament to the power of important stories filtered through the pages of superhero books. As I waited for Brian Stelfreeze, meanwhile, the Gaijin Studios artist walked a young fan through the drawing process, critiquing his portfolio and demonstrating how to draw without focusing too heavily on the details — a method he discussed with me, before giving some insight into the eagerly awaited Black Panther miniseries he’s working on with journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates.
