Adam Newport-Berra, ASC: Four Faces in One Apartment for The Invite

The Invite, Olivia Wilde's comedy for A24, plays out almost entirely inside one San Francisco apartment, where a couple played by Wilde and Seth Rogen host an evening that goes sideways with visitors played by Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton. Adam Newport-Berra, ASC photographed it on 35mm, in story order, on a Los Angeles soundstage with a single day of exteriors in San Francisco. The brief he set himself was that one enclosed space should feel, in his words, like a landscape, and never like a set.The first plan was to light it practically, in the spirit of Husbands and Wives, and let the actors move in and out of shadow. A test with the cast said otherwise. Nobody liked the dailies, and Newport-Berra got some phone calls afterward. What replaced it was hard ceilings, because an open set lit from above reads as a set, with the light built into the ceilings. Key grip Adam Kolegas fabricated low-profile softboxes, tube fixtures wrapped in muslin and skirted, light enough to hang from putty knives slid into the stretch-canvas ceiling and quick enough to pop off in ten minutes when the camera needed to tilt up. Gaffer Len Levine ran them by remote. Doorway moldings that dropped a foot below the ceiling hid the boxes behind them, and six to eight more lights sat on the floor for nearly every setup. With production designer Jade Healy and costume designer Arianne Phillips, the walls, the wood, and the hosts' clothes were kept dark so the faces would carry the light; the visitors' wardrobe was made to stand apart from the room. Every shot in the film, he says, is very lit. There was no shot list on set. Newport-Berra wrote one for the whole film, in a Google Doc, and says he never looked at it once. Prep was a wall of two hundred reference frames, and each morning he walked the set before anyone else arrived, photographing angles on his iPhone with his crew standing in for the cast. Wilde, who stepped into the role of Angela after an actor dropped out, ran each scene with the cast, then handed it to a stand-in and watched from outside while she and Newport-Berra picked frames. The camera stayed on the dolly and mostly locked off; there is no handheld in the film. The tools were lens, height, and eyeline. Norton is held slightly low on a 35mm, almost heroic. Cruz moves on Steadicam on a longer lens. Rogen and Wilde are pinned flat against a wall with too much headroom. For the couple's first argument the rule was cat and mouse: never on the same level, never in the same frame, together only in mirrors and window glass, until the scene lands on a head-on two-shot. The last shot of the film, a move through the building's shaftway that Healy had designed the set around, went at four in the morning on the final night on stage.CREDITSAdam Newport-Berra, ASCInstagram · Website · IMDbJared Levy, hostInstagram · Website · IMDbDavid Kruta, producerInstagram · Website · IMDbTopher Hammond, producerInstagramMUSICOriginal music by One Wave.THE SALONEpisode page and full gallery: https://cinematographysalon.com/podcast/adam-newport-berra-asc-the-inviteNewsletter and events: cinematographysalon.comInstagram: @cinematographysalonPRESENTING SPONSORThis episode is made possible by Fujifilm — home of GFX ETERNA 55, the large format, IMAX®-Certified digital camera, and FUJINON cinema lenses. https://fujifilm-x.comSUPPORT THE SALONThe podcast, the writing, and both Resources tools are free. How does your leadership style change when you're frustrated, and what does your team experience on the other side of you? In this episode of Strategies for Tomorrow's Leaders, Mike Lejeune talks with executive coach, speaker and Oxley Group founder Andrew Oxley about leadership self-awareness, communication and the behaviors that shape employee engagement and team performance.Andrew explains the Four Faces of Frustration, a behavioral model based on DiSC that helps leaders recognize how different people respond to pressure. The conversation explores emotional intelligence, leadership communication, supportive leadership without coddling, giving effective feedback and the shift from doing the work yourself to coaching others to think and perform.Mike and Andrew also discuss why leaders can become the "lid" on organizational growth, how to break through the "ceiling of complexity" and why leaders need to eliminate, simplify, delegate and automate when they feel stretched too thin. They close with practical perspectives on leading younger generations and using AI as a thought partner without allowing it to do your thinking for you.If you want to become a more self-aware leader, communicate more effectively and create an environment where people can grow and perform, listen to or watch the full conversation.Connect with Andrew Oxley: https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrew-oxley-tog/Learn more about The Oxley Group:https://transformingresults.com/

Episode 76 of the Unspoken Words podcast features Dr. Elisa Shipon-Blum and Dr. Jenna Blum tackling one of the most misunderstood realities of Selective Mutism — the difficult behaviors that so often surface alongside it. Meltdowns, shutdowns, avoidance, and controlling moments leave many parents exhausted, and Dr. E and Dr. Jenna make the case that none of these behaviors are defiance. They are communication.Dr. E and Dr. Jenna explore why so many children with SM hold it together at school and fall apart at home, and why structure, consistency, routine, and predictability are non-negotiable for any anxious child. Through real case examples — a six-year-old hiding under the table at her own birthday party, a teen retreating to his room when relatives visit, a young client frozen in front of a beloved family friend — they walk through the four types of difficult behaviors and what each is trying to say.The middle of the episode turns to practical strategy: the Look-Listen-Learn framework, the roadmap method for preparing children before overwhelming events, and bridging down on the Social Communication Bridge® so kids build comfort before words. They also dig into the underlying contributors that drive dysregulation — sensory sensitivities, ADHD, hunger, fatigue, and the parent's own agenda. The episode closes on the feelings chart — a deceptively simple tool that gives children numerical language for emotions they can't yet explain — and on the truth that parents are the most critical component in their child's progress. What does it really mean to surrender? On Senior Sunday at Cibolo Creek Community Church, we celebrate a meaningful milestone as graduating seniors step into a new season of life. As students prepare for college, careers, and what comes next, this service turns our attention to a question that matters for every stage of life: what does it look like to trust God with what comes next? Looking at Jesus' prayer in The Gospel of Luke, this message explores surrender as a posture of worship—placing our lives in God's hands and choosing His way above our own. Whether you are stepping into something new, carrying questions, or learning to trust God in the middle of change, this service is an invitation to listen closely and follow where He leads.

This week, we focus on adoration—what it means to truly admire, love, and give our full attention to God for who He is, not just for what He can do for us. Through prayer, Scripture, and worship, we are reminded that God is worthy of our praise—yesterday, today, and forever. We are invited to lift our attention to Him, placing Him at the center, and allowing our worship to shape our perspective and protect our hearts from a self-centered faith. Thinking Christian: Clear Theology for a Confusing World

Is the way we view church leadership actually doing more harm than good? In this episode of Thinking Christian, Dr. James Spencer sits down with Dr. Christa L. McKirland—Dean of Faculty at Carey Baptist College and author of A Theology of Authority—to dismantle the "CEO model" of ministry and rediscover a biblical, communal framework for the Body of Christ. Why This Episode is a Must-Listen: Beyond "Because I Said So": Discover why imperative authority—the power to command and compel consequences—is actually the lowest form of motivation and often misplaced in the church. The Four Faces of Authority: Dr. McKirland breaks down the essential differences between Executive (positional) and Non-Executive (knowledge and character-based) authority. Ending Pastoral Burnout: Learn how a "passive body" that expects to be spoon-fed creates a two-tiered hierarchy that exhausts leaders and robs congregants of their spiritual dignity. Equipping the Saints: Explore the concept of "Equipping Performative Authority," where the leader's primary role is to empower the community for ministry, not do the ministry for them. Navigating "Hard" Texts: A deep dive into the context of 1 Timothy 2 and why we often read universal prescriptions into specific historical prohibitions. Key Takeaways for Your Walk: *

This message invites us to examine our hearts and rediscover the kind of humility that leads to deeper worship and a more faithful life. On this Palm Sunday, we're reminded that God's kingdom doesn't always look the way we expect—but it always leads to life. Welcome to our new series: Four Faces of Worship. What does it really mean to worship God? In Part 1 of this series, we lay the foundation for understanding true, biblical worship. Looking at Matthew 15, we explore Jesus' warning about empty worship—and how it's possible to say all the right things while still having a heart far from God. Worship is more than singing songs on Sunday. It's about living every day with a heart fully surrendered to God as King. In this message, we introduce four key expressions of worship found throughout Scripture. These “four faces” help us examine what's really going on in our hearts when we worship.

Matthew 27, paints the scene of Jesus' crucifixion and the cruel mockery He endured. Matthew identifies four groups present at the cross — the ignorant soldiers, the criminal thieves, the fickle crowd, and the religious leaders — and explains how each displayed a different form of rejection. The episode centers on Jesus' prayer, “Father, forgive them,” showing how His intercession, the fulfillment of prophecy, and God's grace brought salvation even amid extreme wickedness. The message contrasts human cruelty with Divine mercy and calls listeners to reflect on the power of forgiveness and the spread of the gospel.

The research, funded by the John Templeton Foundation's Spiritual Yearning Research Initiative, used machine learning to identify four distinct categories of "Nones": NINOs (Nones In Name Only, who are actually quite religious), Spiritual But Not Religious (the largest group), the Disengaged (content secular individuals far from any religious or spiritual practice), and Zealous Secularists (a small but vocal group actively encouraging others to leave religion). The conversation explores what these categories reveal about American religious identity, why traditional survey methods may be undercounting Christians, and the surprising finding that many "happy atheists" report life satisfaction comparable to religious Americans. Think frustration is just anger? Think again. In this episode, Andrew Oxley breaks down the Four Faces of Frustration (Red, Yellow, Green, Blue) and hands you a simple filter for leading when emotions get loud. You'll discover why self-diagnosing under stress rarely works, how to run the people vs. task and speed up vs. slow down tests, and the one question every leader needs to ask: "What's it like to be on the other side of you?" We also tackle the difference between problems to solve and tensions to manage, the First Law of Problem-Solving, and a practical path to influence: serve the people you already have. Clear. Actionable. Memorable. 00:00 – Cold open & setup 03:07 – "The least frustrating interview" (ironic hook) 03:48 – Why frustration? Making complex ideas simple (Mark Twain shout-out) 05:55 – Are these literal faces? Not all frustration = anger 08:20 – The tour: Red (intense), Yellow (optimistic), Green (quiet), Blue (worried) 10:50 – How to know your face; why self-diagnosis fails 11:10 – Two quick axes: People vs. Task; Speed Up vs. Slow Down 17:40 – The question: "What's it like to be on the other side of you?" 18:44 – Why the book is a fable (story vs. lecture) 22:27 – How long it is and how to use it 25:56 – Can we eliminate frustration? Problems vs. Tensions 27:41 – First Law of Problem-Solving: long-running issues = you're managing, not solving 30:00 – Mission over paycheck: engaging younger teams without the doom loop 31:14 – Litmus test: "Is it effective?" and why leaders change first 33:35 – Where to get it: Amazon + free copy via live workshop (transformingresults.com) 34:16 – "Serve, serve, serve" and the real measure of influence Website: https://www.transformingresults.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrew-oxley-tog Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/andrew.oxley.758 Twitter/X: https://x.com/AndrewOxley YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@andrewoxley-theoxleygroup

In this episode, Shanda sits down with George Shamblin, author of The Four Faces of Christ, for a fascinating look at the gospels and the unique portraits of Jesus revealed by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Each gospel writer highlights a different facet of Christ—together giving us a fuller, richer understanding of who He is. Shanda and George unpack why the gospels complement rather than contradict one another, how their distinct emphases point us to the same Savior, and why seeing Christ through these four “faces” deepens our worship and strengthens our faith. If you've ever wondered why we need four gospels, what each writer reveals about Jesus, and how these perspectives shape our view of Him today, you won't want to miss this conversation. Luke 4:14-20 ESV 14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report about him went out through all the surrounding country. 15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all. 16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.” 20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him.

In Episode 330 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with Henry Olsen, author of “Working Class Republican” and “The Four Faces of the Republican Party,” about where the United States and other western democratic countries find themselves politically today, the sources of populism's broad, international appeal, and why he believes that we are living through the kind of political realignment that hasn't happened for almost a century. Henry is also a columnist for the Washington post and the host of the weekly podcast “Beyond the Polls” where he speaks with leading political journalists and analysts about American politics and its presidential and congressional races. Demetri and Henry spend the first hour of their conversation discussing the history of democratic politics and how we got to where are today where so many Americans and others Westerners no longer feel at home in their own parties and increasingly feel like their countries and the people who govern them are unresponsive to their needs, incompetent or corrupt in their exercise of power, and do not seem to share their most fundamental values when comes to the protection of personal freedoms, the exercise of civic responsibility, and the role of government in society. The second hour is devoted to American electoral politics, specifically the 2024 elections, whether or not we are going to see a rematch of Donald Trump vs. Joe Biden, whether Trump will be able to campaign while also fighting several ongoing lawsuits, what it would take for someone in the Republican Primary—a Ron DeSantis or Vivek Ramaswamy—to take the nomination from him, what impact a third party candidate like RFK Jr. could have on the race, and what happens if Trump actually wins. What does the country look like in that scenario? Is the “Deep State” even going to let him take office? Will he be able to exercise power and if he does, is he going to go after his political enemies with same commitment and vitriol that they have gone after him, and what does that mean for the viability of American democracy?
