This week, we have a rewind of a recent Story Club livestream special! Nigel and Tazziii are joined by Vik Deluca from Mega City Comics as they dive into the Eisner Award-winning graphic novel, "Superman For All Seasons." This introspective narrative explores the transformation of Clark Kent from farm boy to (arguably) the world's greatest superhero. Our discussion not only focuses on Clark's extraordinary powers but also his relationships, struggles, and the responsibilities that come with his abilities. We also confront the age-old debate: Is Superman a boring character? This episode might change the minds of the sceptics among us (i.e. Nigel). Tune in as we delve into the early life of Superman, the impact of his journey on his character, and the influence of his story on the perception of the Man of Steel. You can catch future Story Club, and other livestream shows on the mayamada Twitch channel: https://www.twitch.tv/mayamada

Look, up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's the Gobbledygeek season 15 premiere! Breaking from vaguely defined tradition, Paul and Arlo are kicking off the season with a Four-Color Flashback, and their pal Eric Sipple is on hand to help turn the pages. Arlo has chosen to subject Paul and Eric to the classic Jeph Loeb/Tim Sale collab Superman for All Seasons, which may prove a tough sell to a couple of Super-skeptics. The gang discusses the book's Rockwell-influenced aesthetic, the simplicity (or flatness, depending on taste) of the cast, how Sale's big dopey Superman conveys Clark Kent's decency, and the surprising love triangle at the book's core. Plus, Arlo explains the very personal reasons he chose this book to start the season. You'll believe a man can cry. NEXT: introducing our That Was Then series, wherein Paul and Arlo will be taking a look at various movies that are celebrating anniversaries in 2024. First up is perennial Gobbledy-fave Ghostbusters, which is turning a frightful 40. Doch was genau macht Superman eigentlich aus? Welcome, lovely listeners, to Tongue in Geek! Where two more white guys on the internet share their unsolicited opinions on all things geeky. In this episode, we review Superman for All Seasons (1998), written by Jeph Loeb and illustrated by Tim Sale. Spoilers ahead! Topics of discussion: small face in Smallville, Lex is a creep, what makes a "good" Superman story, and much more! This episode was originally recorded in 2021. With the recent passing of Alan Grant, we take a look back at some of the 80's Batman he wrote alongside John Wagner in Detective Comics #583-586, which feature the first appearances of Scarface & The Ventriloquist in the first story and then The Ratcatcher in the next. They're two quick, fun Batman stories that go down smooth, with nice art by Norm Breyfogle too! Then we finish our read of Superman For All Seasons by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale with issue #4: Winter! Superman gets his groove back by making a snow angel and stopping a classic winter flood. Next Time: Saga of the Swamp Thing #35-42 by Alan Moore & Stephen Bissette
It's been a while since we read a Vertigo book, so with today's episode we take our first foray into Jason Aaron and R. M. Guera's Scalped, a Native American noir book with lots of rich history to play off of. It's a book filled with a bunch of assholes who all hate each other. Classic! Then we continue our read of Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale's Superman For All Seasons with issue #3, the Fall issue, which takes a slightly different approach than the first two issues did. Next Time: We remember comics writer Alan Grant with Detective Comics #583-586.
In this episode we remember the legendary artist, Tim Sale, we talk about our thoughts when we learned of his passing, what his work meant to us, and we talk about the work he has left behind. We would love it if you would share your thoughts about Tim Sale in the comments section of this posting. Or please feel free to email us at secrectoriginsmc@gmail.com. 00:00 We start the episode off by talking about how we reacted to the news of Tim's passing and what his work meant to us. 8:36 We start to talk more in-depth about his work, starting with “A Superman For All Seasons”. 16:30 We talk about Jeph Loeb's writing combined with Sale's art, which gets us talking about The Color Series, beginning with the way Tim portrayed the movement of Daredevil in Daredevil Yellow. We also cover Spider-Man: Blue, Hulk: Gray, and Captain America: White. 29:40 We talk about probably his most famous work, Batman: The Long Halloween. 38:30 Joe gives us some Flash Facts about Tim Sale and then we move into our recommendations.
We've got Turtle Fever! The new TMNT game reminded us how great the Ninja Turtles are, so we go back to Eastman and Laird's original series to read the now classic Return to New York story from issues 19-21. Why is it so classic? There's a worm-filled Shredder. Nuff said. We then continue our long-read of Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale's Superman for All Seasons with issue #2, the Summer issue. It's hot outside too! How topical! Next Time - Scalped: Indian Country by Jason Aaron & R.M. Guera
A couple years ago we read the Ocarina of Time manga, so we thought we'd revisit the Zelda series with the sequel, Majora's Mask. Zelda's not even in this story and Link might be dead, or maybe dreaming, or maybe he just fell in a big hole. We're not sure, but we know there are monkeys and that's cool. We also start our next long-read: the 4-part Superman for All Seasons by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, in which we get a nice little retelling of Superman's origin. Next Time: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Return to New York (#19-21)
In honor of the passing of Tim Sale, we here at Comic Geek Speak are digging into the archive once more. All the way back in 2006, the team of Bryan Deemer, Jamie D, Matt, Peter Rios and Shane gave us an in-depth look at Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale's Superman For All Seasons for the Book of the Month Club. And as we here in America celebrate our Independence Day, we could use some of the hope, joy, and light that this story brings forth, so it is extra fitting indeed to re-air this one. Here's to you, Tim, and thank you. (1:28:50)
In memorial of the tragic passing of comic book legend Tim Sale we read Superman: For All Seasons. One of the many iconic collaborations with Jeph Loeb and accompanied by colorist Bjarne Hansen. This was an absolute delight and was ranked as Nathan's favorite Superman story. A much-needed palette cleanser for all the brutality and gore that have been among our last few episodes. Our streak of non-superhero comics continues with one of the newest comics we've ever covered on the show: Neil Gaiman's Chivalry which was released just two months ago! Well, technically it's a short story he wrote in the 90's, but it was just adapted to comics by Colleen Doran and it's a real beauty. Plus it makes us fumble our way through Arthurian mythology, what's not to love? Then we move onto the finale of the Korvac Saga in Avengers 177 in which waaaaay too many Avengers get killed. Next Time: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask manga by Akira Himekawa and Superman: For All Seasons #1

Superman #Review #DCCOmics Superman For All Seasons features tales of Superman's earliest adventures told on a mythic scale by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, the Eisner Award-winning creative team behind Batman: The Long Halloween and Batman: Dark Victory, with spectacular coloring by Bjarne Hansen. This episode is sponsored by Deadly Grounds Coffee "Its good to get a little Deadly" https://deadlygroundscoffee.com Retro Dorkening Shirts on Amazon! https://tinyurl.com/dorkshirts Check out Superman for All Seasons https://amzn.to/3tw5OX1 Published September - December 1998 Written by Jeph Loeb Illustrated by Tim Sale Superman for All Seasons was a four-issue Superman miniseries published in 1998, written by Jeph Loeb and illustrated by Tim Sale. Each issue features a different season of the year, both literally and metaphorically. The four issues are each first-person narratives of different people in Superman's life, and their perspectives on him. In this coming-of-age tale witness the experiences and adventures that transform a simple country boy into the world's greatest hero. Told through the course of four seasons in the Man of Steel's adolescent life, it illustrates that it is the person, not the powers, that makes Superman a hero. The catalyst for the "Smallville" television program, SUPERMAN FOR ALL SEASONS is emotional and insightful, humanizing the alien from another planet so that he is not only realistic but also relatable. It also features in-depth characterizations of Lana Lang, Lex Luthor, Lois Lane and the Kents. This is the season, turn, turn, turn the pages of Superman: For All Seasons Superman for All Seasons was a 4-issue comic book limited series written by Jeph Loeb with art by Tim Sale, and was originally published by DC Comics in 1998. This was made hot off the heels from their previous success, Batman: The Long Halloween, and as that Batman story dealt with holidays as the theme, this story's theme dealt with seasons. The artwork contains many influences from that of Norman Rockwell. The story also parallels the events from Superman's then-origin story John Byrne's The Man of Steel, though it can be read on its own. Superman For All Seasons was conceived, like all of the Jeph Loeb/Tim Sale books from DC Comics and rival Marvel Comics, as a stand-alone, self-contained story that gave a sense of the character of Superman and his supporting cast.[citation needed] Not an origin, but picking up on who the character is and how he came to be.
