Sherlock Holmes. This week on Bronze and Modern Gods, we cover a collector-driven episode with a little bit of everything: modern variant heat, 1980s satire, and two underrated books that deserve way more attention.Hot TopicAscencia #31 (1:25 Arthur Adams variant) and the variant strategy that's turning a low-volume indie into a high-impact market mover, with multiple scarcity tiers fueling demand.Old Fart RuleBoris the Bear #1 (Dark Horse, 1986), the perfect time capsule of the black-and-white comics boom, complete with a second printing and a surprisingly long run across two publishers.Underrated Books of the WeekRichard: Suicide Squad #1 (1987), the launch of the modern Squad and the blueprint that shaped later adaptations.John: Not Brand Echh #1 (1967), Marvel's official parody book and a weirdly revealing snapshot of how the company saw itself while the superhero universe was still forming.Plus Show & Tell, new member shoutouts, and viewer mail.Become a Member for $2.99/month and get:• Members-only live streams• Bonus Show & Tell episodes• On-screen shoutoutsJOIN → https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkHTY1eNYHr9JoTndx_m6kA/join
Action News Jax's Ben Becker reported on dsicovering text messages where Jacksonville City Council President Kevin Carrico says JEA board member Arthur Adams is being replaced (potentially by Paul Martinez) because “I owed a big favor to a friend.” The message has raised issues of integrity, transparency, and possibly outright corruption if JEA Board appointments are not made in the public's best interests, but as the result of potential quid-pro-quo scenarios. WOKV will follow developments in this story, and you can follow Ben Becker's reporting withAction News Jax on CBS47 and FOX30.

Today's guest, Ann Nocenti, has been there and done that. Not only did she break in as a writer with Marvel on titles such as Bizarre Adventures, Spider-Woman, and the Dazzler and Beast miniseries Beauty and the Beast, she in short order became an assistant editor for Carl Potts, where she worked on such titles as The Incredible Hulk, The Defenders, Doctor Strange, and The Thing. Not only did she and the elusive Arthur Adams create Longshot and launched him in his own miniseries, she teamed with other A-list talent like Mike Mignola, Barry Windsor-Smith, and John Romita Jr. Not only did she have a defining run on Daredevil (where she introduced villains like Typhoid Mary and Blackheart), but she wrote Kid Eternity for Vertigo and then left comics to pursue journalism and film. And guess what? She recently returned to the Marvel fold with miniseries featuring Captain Marvel and Storm, and worked with Berger Books (Dark Horse) on Ruby Falls and Seeds! Ronnie Laws is an award-winning tenor saxophonist and composer whose career has, since the early 1970s, straddled the worlds of jazz and R&B. Since 1975 he has placed seven albums in the Top 200 -- including his 1975 Blue Note debut Pressure Sensitive -- as well as tracks and albums in no less than six other categories. He has worked as an in-demand session man and live musician with a who's-who of jazz and R&B greats including Ramsey Lewis, Gregory Porter, B.B. King, George Duke, Quincy Jones, Stanley Jordan, and dozens more. Laws, the younger brother of flutist Hubert Laws, is the product of a musical family. Two of his sisters, Debra and Eloise, are also professional singers. Born in Houston, Texas, Laws began teaching himself to play the alto saxophone at the age of 11. While his first love was baseball, a serious eye injury ended those dreams early and he focused on music, which he studied in high school, at Stephen F. Austin State, and later at Texas Southern University, where he switched to tenor, earned a degree, and developed a progressive mastery and technique. In 1970 he moved to Los Angeles in pursuit of a musical career. He woodshedded with the Jazz Crusaders (Hubert had played with them in the '50s) and especially Hugh Masakela. His early gigs in the city were with pianist Walter Bishop, Jr., Doug Carn, and on his brother's CTI recordings. In 1972, he joined Earth, Wind & Fire for 18 months and was, in effect, its first saxophonist, playing both tenor and soprano; he played on the album Last Days and Time. In Los Angeles, he made the acquaintance of Donald Byrd. The two became friends and Byrd got Laws signed to Blue Note. His 1975 debut, Pressure Sensitive, got serious radio play despite landing at 73, and yielded the enduring jazz-funk classic "Always There." It has been covered and/or sampled by well over 100 artists. Laws was on his way. With his other '70s work -- 1976's Fever, Friends and Strangers, and Flame -- which boasted his first cross continental 12" hit "All for You," Laws established himself as a workhorse studio musician, playing on recordings by Ramsey Lewis, his sister Eloise, Arthur Adams, Gene McDaniels, and Wayne Henderson, to name a few. In the '80s, Laws was an international festival and club draw. Three singles from his first three albums all went gold, as did their respective long-players. Despite the fact that he is often characterized strictly as a "smooth jazz" artist, Laws might be the first instrumentalist to score hits in the emerging "quiet storm" subgenre of R&B. Luck was on his side when Mike's first-ever foray into Marvel Comics was the incredible 1985 miniseries LONGSHOT by Ann Nocenti & Arthur Adams! While the title character and his rogues gallery would become fixtures in X-Men comics for years to come, the original 6-issue series remains a fantastic standalone-read and a creative high point in 1980s Marvel history. The medium is the message in Mojoverse! --- Excerpt from "Longshot" rap by Adam WarRock: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_iWN91sRww
¡Feliz 2023!

From the Mojoverse he comes...to star in his own limited series! Longshot's got it all -- leather, looks, and so much luck it's actually he's mutant power. But with his recent arrival to Earth leaving his identity in question, Longshot discovers he's got a long road ahead in uncovering his truest, non-engineered self. Ann Nocenti and Arthur Adams present Longshot! he first issue of a six-issue miniseries that represents the first major work of both Nocenti and Adams.[1] The Longshot series established Longshot as an amnesiac fugitive from another dimension who discovers that he has favorable probability outcomes, or "good luck," that protect him when his motives are pure, and that he was a paradoxical genetically engineered clone of his future son, raised to be a slave who led a rebellion on his dystopian world against his former master and enemy, Mojo. The character subsequently becomes a recurring fixture in the various X-Men related books, which see him as a member of the X-Men from 1986 to 1989, a member of Tony Bedard and Chris Claremont's Exiles teams, and a member of the third incarnation of X-Factor from 2008 - 2013, as well as in his own solo adventures. Versions of the character have also appeared in the Ultimate Marvel line of books, and television and video games.
