A punk podcast where old punks discuss punk and hardcore movies in a very punk way. We ridicule filmmakers for their limited knowledge of punk canon, their corny and sentimental affinity for regional scenes, and their technical ineptitude -- but we also praise the few that "rise above" (wink wink). And we'd love for you to join us, but please consider yourself warned, 'cause we're "bringin' da noise, bringin' da punk!"
Hey there, DTD-ers! We've got a fun one for you this week. And by that we mean our episode, not the movie. The movie is HYPE and it's about grunge. OOF! But don't fret; as you know, from pain comes great art. So here at DTD headquarters we have been working hard on a new play to commemorate and elevate this painful experience. Here's a bit from the third act, for your enjoyment. Pete: Grunge. Do you know what Grunge is? It's the thousand flannels of Cobain's enemies, a story we agree to tell each other over and over, until we forget that it's a lie. Geoff: But what do we have left, once we abandon the lie? Chaos? A gaping pit waiting to swallow us all. Matt: Chaos isn't a pit. It's a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb. They refuse, they cling to the realm or the gods of classic rock or punk. Illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is. Sounds awesome, right? So go ahead and give it a listen NOW!!! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
Glad tidings, DTD-heads! It's. Really. Happening. We're wrapping up our PISTOL-watch with a special double-stuffed episode in which we discuss "tracks" 5 and 6. It's very exciting -- so much so that we understand you might have a hard time handling the news. In fact, we heard a rumor that Queen Elizabeth (who's been a fan ever since we started the PISTOL recaps) was so surprised that she literally dropped dead!!! Unfortunately, we have no way to verify the rumor. Nevertheless, it's a fun episode: we play some games, we reminisce on our favorite memories from classic PISTOL episodes, we get a little Q-Anon-y with it, and (spoiler alert) some of us even come all the way around on the show. It's a real late summer/early fall miracle. But we don't want to say which of us comes around. Or why he/they come around. And we definitely don't want to say how the rest of us respond to that "who" and that "why." We want you to experience us for yourself, in all our glorious we-ness. So what are you waiting for?! Pull the trigger (metaphorically speaking, or course) and start listening NOW! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
Quoi de neuf, DTD-ers! This week, we're coming at you paradox style! And that means 1) we feature Tim Irwin's WE JAM ECONO 2) in a conversation that is orchestrated by our own Matt Truffaut. But how can this be? How can we mix the MINUTEMEN'S working class punk jams with Mr. Truffaut's aesthetic elitism? The answer: carefully! The other answer: we see no conflict between the MINUTEMEN'S blue collar body music and Matt's super sophisticated editorial choices. Wait? What? Why? How? Bc we know that class doesn't determine quality, and vice versa. That's why we called this episode a paradox, and not a contradiction. See! You're getting it! Just take baby steps and forgive yourself when you make mistakes. When things get confusing, just remember: listen to this episode. NOW! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
Hey there, DTD-ers! As you're probably already aware, this is a PISTOL week. There's nothing else we can really say about that. These are the circumstances that we all -- you, the listener, and us, the hosts -- find ourselves in. And remember, this is our collective choice, which means that the effort to get through the entire PISTOL series remains, if nothing else, a testament to our shared strength and commitment. We praise you for that, dear listeners, although we, here at DTD home base, have to admit that our resolve is weakening, and we might be cracking up. Lo! It is in times like these that we return to the poets to remind us of the strength that we can muster: "Faith, you know you're gonna live through the rain/ Lord, you got to keep the faith/ Faith, don't you let your love turn to hate/ Right now we've got to keep the faith/ Faith, keep the faith, keep the faith/ Try to hold on, trying to hold on/ Yeah" - John Francis Bongiovi, Jr. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
How goes there, DTD-ers? This is a good week. For one, we are NOT discussing an episode of Pistol. Second, and more importantly, we have the opportunity to discuss Kevin Egan's WHAT AWAITS US: A BEYIND STORY, which is - pleasant surprise - NOT about the vegetarian meat substitute, and is instead about his legendary hardcore band, BEYOND. The film is more than that, too, although we're not gonna tell you what that "more" is; the only way you're gonna find out is to listen to the episode (and, of course, watch Egan's film). And while we're on the topic of telling you about things that we aren't telling you about because we want you to listen to the episode, let us also not tell you to keep listening AFTER the outro to hear additional, secret content. That's right, we're not saying anything! You're gonna have to listen for yourself to discover that we talk (for too long!) about a recent, and kind of silly, Brooklyn Vegan article. So you should just DO THE WORK! NOW! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
Hey there DTD-heads. If you can hear this, there may still be time. Please help us. We've fallen into a Pistol pit, and we can't get out. At first, we thought someone might come and find us, and help us out. But it's been three episodes now, and we're starting to feel like this is our fate. The nights are so cold! The story is so uninteresting! There doesn't even seem to be any point to it all! H! E! L! P! All that said, Matt does seem to be coming around on the series, so the candle of hope still burns. But is that hope for naught? Is it all just a Little Match Girl kinda sitch? Listen NOW to find out! What are you waiting for?!?!?! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
Welcome back DTDers! This week, we've got some bad news/good news for you. The bad news first: we're not giving you another PISTOL recap… yet. The good news: we're discussing the only thing that might be more punk than PISTOL — that's right, it's BAND IN DC, the Bad Brains documentary. We know we say this often, but this doc is a really good one. Maybe one of the best. But then why doesn't pitchfork, entertainment weekly, or the nytimes have it in their top 10 punk docs lists? Good question. It's an issue we address in the ep, along with a number of other pressing concerns. But we‘re not giving ANYTHING else away. You gotta strap on your motorcycle helmet, sit down calmly on your couch, press play on the play icon on your favorite podcast provider, and FIND OUT FOR YOURSELF! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
Fair warning, DTD-ers: "lasciate ogne speranza voi ch'intrate." And you know what that means; we're picking up where we left off with the Danny Boyle directed Sex Pistols mini-series, PISTOL. This week, we discuss "track" 2, and (SPOILER ALERT) we don't think it's very good -- although Matt might be coming around on the show. In any event, just because the show doesn't rock, doesn't mean we can't! In other words, this episode of DTD shreds! We brutaly riff on not just PISTOL, but also on pop punk cover bands, our favorite new game show ("Is it Punk?"), pop punk cover bands, what counts as exceptional dialogue, and pop punk cover bands. So what are you waiting for?! You've heard the rest, NOW listen to the best. That's us, btw. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
Hey there, DTD-ers! We've got a news flash for you, apparently: DTD now stands or Descendants Till Death, apparently. "Why is that?", you ask. Well, we'll tell you why -- because for this episode, we have the pleasure of talking to Justin Wilson, who is part of the braintrust behind the Descendants/All documentary FILMAGE, which we discussed last week. But Justin doesn't just talk about the movie; we also talk about what it takes to get a punk doc off the ground, Justin's other punk projects (including A Fat Wreck), and -- of course -- pizza delivery punk! It's a good one, so give it a listen now, and make sure to listen all the way through to the end to HEAR THE DOCS TILL DEATH CREW LIKE YOU'VE NEVER HEARD US BEFORE! For more FILMAGE (including a bonus bonus feature comprised of an additional 50 minutes of Descendants/All footage), check out the movie's site: https://filmagemovie.com . --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
Welcome home, DTD-ers! This week we're back with a movie that might best be described as a comfort watch: Matt Riggle and Deedle LaCour's FILMAGE: THE STORY OF THE DESCENDENTS/ALL. It's a good one... although we came to that realization only after collectively overcoming the disappointment of this not being a movie about the children of famous Disney villains. So if you want to hear a moving story of our growth and acceptance of this Descendents movie for what it is, give the episode a listen NOW! And even if you don't want your heartstrings pulled, give the episode a listen NOW! If not for yourself, do it for all the Pizza Delivery Punks out there! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
Gu-day DTDers! We're so glad you're here, because THIS is THE one that all you true punks out there have been waiting for! That's right, this week, we discuss the pluralization of proper nouns!!! We know, it's heady stuff; but all of us at DTD headquarters felt it was a conversation that needed to happen, and we're proud of the result. Through open dialogue, we tore down walls and build bonds of friendship. And, oh yeah, we also talk about the first episode of the Danny Boyle directed miniseries "PISTOL," an adaptation of Steven Jones' memoir about his time with the Sex Pistols, "Lonely Boy." And all of that is just a long way to say that if you're excited by the idea of Chrissie Hynde singing along to Otis Redding on a jukebox draped in bondage gear, then THIS is THE episode for YOU! So don't delay, press play! That's what I say! OK? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
(Gabba Gabba) Hey there DTD-heads! We know you love punk, and we also know that you're kinda into being sad, so this week, we've got a real big treat for you!! That's right, you guessed it; we're discussing Michael Gramaglia and Jim Fields' End of the Century: The Story of the Ramones -- a thoroughly depressing (and inspiring?) look at what you can achieve if you fully commit to emotional avoidance. Yeah, the movie's pretty heavy; but as usual, we're a laugh riot. So 1) shut off that ironic pro-America playlist you've been working on for the 4th of July party you're hosting tonight, 2) press play on this bad boy NOW, and then, later tonight, after you've finished the episode and the party is in full swing 3) have all your guests light a sparkler for Joey. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
WHAT'S! UP! DOC! HEADS!?! We're so happy to be back, bringing you our trademark mixture of encyclopedic punk knowledge and high-minded film criticism. But you're gonna have to wait until next week for all that, because this week, it's our end of season 2 recap. Or is it our beginning of season 3 promo? Whatever the case may be, you know what we're talking about: it's the Grohlies, baby!!!! That's right, all the notable players in punk and hardcore filmmaking have come out for one special episode to celebrate last season's finest achievements. And unlike the Oscars, which are weighed down by Hollyweird's corporate elite, The Grohlies trim the fat and get right to it. This award show is definitely not 50% advertisements (for very real products)! So press play, already!!!! What are you waiting for, punk?! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
Thank you for making the trip to visit us, DTD-ers! And as you might have guessed, since we've all gathered here on the lanai, this week we've taken a trip to SUBURBIA, Penelope Spheeris' first narrative feature, and her second film overall (following her seminal DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION). What is there to say about this movie that hasn't already been written by underpaid and overworked Ivy and near-Ivy grads who work at Vice and similar publications? Not much. But we've gone ahead and said it all again, and better. And with more allusions to Wesley Snipes. So we've at least got that going for us. You, on the other hand, have nothing going for you (which we mean in the nicest, most punk-affirming way!), so you should probably start listening to this episode NOW! But proceed with caution. And keep up your guard. SUBURBIA's punkness attacks when you least expect it, in unexpected ways. Don't forget: SUBURBIA is an address that changes all the rules. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
Hey there, DTD-heads! This week we discuss the CRASS episode of Bryan Ray Turcotte and Bo Bushnell's excellent THE ART OF PUNK web series. And we do, indeed, discuss CRASS; maybe not as much as we discuss the RHCP (spoiler alert), but we certainly mention CRASS long enough for Matt to repeatedly mispronounce the name of one of the band members. Unbelievable. Unforgivable. Unacceptable. So he's out. We punk-cancelled him. Nevertheless, we wish him all the best in his future endeavors, which his publicist has just informed us is a new podcast, called "Reject of Society," co-hosted by Matt and Joe Rogan. Be on the lookout for it in a few weeks. In the meantime, go ahead and give a listen to the latest and greatest episode of DTD, which has an exclusive conversation that you won't hear on any other podcast! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
Welcome home, DTD-ers! This week, we are discussing Mark Christopher Covino and Jeff Howlett's 2012 classic, A BAND CALLED DEATH. And before we say anything about the film, the DTD crew needs to address an apparent misunderstanding. In the two weeks since we announced that we'd be watching the "Death movie," we've received over 50,000 concerned texts/calls/messages from listeners, like yourself, most of whom assumed that this was to be our last episode. From what we can gather, it seems that many of you read a little too much into our name; the "Death" in our name does not now -- and never has -- referred to the proto-punk band from Detroit (or the Death Metal band from Florida, for that matter). Put simply, DOCS TILL DEATH will continue covering DOCS AFTER "DEATH". We have no intentions of ceasing to producing Poland's #6 music podcast. Hopefully, this clarification eases your troubled minds. Now that that's settled, give the episode a listen: find out which one of us thinks this film is his fav movie doc, which one of us loves Light in the Attic records, and which one of us has been guzzling hot milk before getting on mic. The answers will SHOCK you. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
What's up, true believers!? This week the DTD crew is back with something very special. Is it a minisode in which we pay homage to the Doughboys podcast by discussing KFC's new Beyond Chicken "nuggets"? Or, is it a spin-off show that amounts to another step forward in our play for global podcast dominance? You decide. Aaaaanywaaaay... this is a real good one! Better than the KFC Beyond Chicken? Again, you decide. Should you stop whatever you're currently doing and listen to the episode NOW so that you can decide for yourself? Well, in regards to that last question, WE decide for YOU. And the answer is YES. H, e, double hockey sticks, YES! Greetings DTD-ers! You ARE in the right place! Please don't let the subject of today's episode confuse you. This is still Docs Till Death, and it's still THE premiere punk podcast; however, with this episode, we've decided to spread our wings (in a no-growth, immature kind of way) and pay a visit to metal, punk's cousin on its father's side. That's right! We're discussing SOME KIND OF MONSTER, Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky's 2004 Metallica documentary. And to commemorate this groundbreaking DTD episode, we're sharing a little poem we wrote about the experience of listening to this very special "crossover" episode: Listen and you will see More is all you need Dedicated to Entertaining you Downloading faster Uncontrolled laughter Your heart beats faster Uncontrolled laughter Laughter Sounds fun, right!? So listen NOW and obey your laughter! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
Happy MLK Day, DTD-ers! Since many of you have the day off of work but nothing to do, we decided that we'd release a very good minisode. That's why we're discussing the DEAD KENNEDYS episode of Bryan Ray Turcotte and Bo Bushnell's terrific THE ART OF PUNK web series. As a faithful DTD-er who's listened to our discussion of the BLACK FLAG episode of THE ART OF PUNK, you already know that we're big fans of the series -- and that we're not poseurs. We do real punk stuff. Like all the time (never mind that Pete's primary exposure to the DEAD KENNEDYS was through the Tony Hawk video game). And we want you to do real punk stuff, too. That's why we think that if your job is requiring you to go to work on MLK Day, you might want call in sick. Listen: if you're not providing an essential service (and maybe even if you are), your boss might be a racist and/or extracting surplus value like a vampire. Not good in either case, friend. So call in and spend the day listening to this episode and any back episodes of DTD that you might have missed. You deserve it! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
How goes it, Docs Till Death-ers?! This week, the crew discusses Dave Markey's film from 1992 called 1991: THE YEAR THAT PUNK BROKE. We gotta admit, we're a little confused, so we're glad that Thirstin' More could be on hand to serve as spiritual guide, educating us in the ways of the grunge. The film is a riveting snapshot of "alternative" music in the moments before that music, and Nirvana in particular, would achieve immense global success -- which in turn, would lead to seismic shifts in the music industry and in culture, more broadly. Plus, the movie also features one (maybe two) decent bands. Maybe two and a half. In any event, we sort it all out on the pod, so give it a listen. And fair warning: this one's a hot take special! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
Happy New Years, DTD-ers! We're back with a brand new minisode. This week, we kick off the year with a discussion of the punk rock phenomena of "Good Band, Bad Influence," which refers to classic bands that are maybe a little TOO popular, because they are often cited by not-so-classic bands as key influences. But in typical DTD salon fashion, other intellectually stimulating topics enter into the mix (shout out to The Chase Theory), and the episode winds up being about GBBIs as much as that one Seinfeld episode is about eating at a Chinese restaurant. Know what we mean? Of course you do! That's why we're friends. And more importantly, that's why you're a faithful DTD listener who's gonna give this episode a listen RIGHT NOW! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
"Bane, Bane, they're good for your heart / The more you listen, the more you understand that they were an influence for Have Heart" That's right, DTD-ers! We're beginning our episode description with that famous couplet, so you KNOW we've got something good in store for you. This week, we're talking HOLDING THESE MOMENTS (2020), the recent BANE doc directed by Dan Elswick. It's a fun, and unexpectedly touching, one. But fear not, friends, we deliver exactly what you'd expect -- including Pete eating a hut dug, Geoff wearing a leather duster; and Matt analyzing verb tense usage. Put simply, it's hardcore for the hardcore. So if you want your hardcore friends to continue to like and respect you, you're gonna need to give this ep a listen, STAT! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
Seasons Greetings, Docs Till Death-heads! This week, the DTD crew takes a detour from their epoch-defining discussions of punk and hardcore docs, and instead we take an inner journey to discover the real meaning of punk. And wouldn't you know it! By the end of their journey -- which includes visits from past, present, and future punk and hardcore luminaries -- we actually do discover the true meaning of punk! It's a crustpunkmas miracle!! God save the queen, everyone!! (If none of what we've just said makes any sense, then you need to listen to the episode. All will be revealed. And what are you waiting for, anyway? You know you want to avoid your family. So just go ahead and get antisocial: put those headphones on NOW, turn us up, and tune them out!) --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
Dear Docs Till Death-heads, We are writing to let you know how excited we were to discover that Geoff selected Jem Cohen's 1999 experimental film about Fugazi, INSTRUMENT, as our documentary for this week. All of us here at DTD are very familiar with Fugazi's many wonderful records and with arty Fwench New Wave cinema, so we believe that we are the perfect podcast to discuss Cohen's movie. And if we had to identify one weakness, it would probably be that we, as a podcast, care too much about punk and hardcore, and that we sometimes go TOO FAR to do a good job. In any event, we would love to speak more with you about this wonderful opportunity that we just completed. In the meantime, please listen to this very professional episode and subscribe for instant access to future episodes. Additionally, if you can find a "like" button, please smash it like the state! Kind Regards, us. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
Welcome home, DTD-ers! We've missed you so, so we've put together a very special minisode. This week, we discuss the BLACK FLAG episode of Bryan Ray Turcotte and Bo Bushnell's terrific THE ART OF PUNK web series. And if you know Black Flag like we know Black Flag (and we know Black Flag, bc we're no poseurs), then you know that Black Flag's art means primarily the work of the great Raymond Pettibon -- with all due respect to the also great Edward Colver. So what more do we need to say? This is good, important, and meaningful stuff. Pettibon's art and Black Flag's music aren't too bad, either. In short: you should check out our new episode NOW; you won't be disappointed, especially if you're a fan of sound effects. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
Hey there, Doc-Heads! Your friendly neighborhood podcast hosts are back, and this week we're discussing James Spooner's seminal film, AFRO-PUNK. As always, we raise a series of important questions -- like whether it makes more sense to call the film a "documentary" or a "conversation"? what counts as valid commentary when you are not a film's (or any work of art's) intended audience? and, of course, is that a framed press photo of Ashes behind Chaka? We also laugh way too much at our own jokes... but not in a RHCP sort of way (SPOILER ALERT!). Are you confused now? Do you want to know what about what we've just said is a spoiler? Might we be suggesting that the RHCP have returned to the fold? Guess you're gonna have to listen and find out! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
Hey there, Doc-heads! We're back with a minisode about punk comps. And if you have not yet realized that we came of punk-age in the 90's, then this one – and especially the amount of time we spend discussing MULTIPLE Food Not Bomb benefit comps – is really gonna hammer home that point. But don't be mistaken; we also touch on timeless punk concerns, like whether streaming has killed the comp as a genre, whether the best comps are ones where each band sounds practically the same, and whether comps still make Geoff go “butt wild.” All that, more, AND a very special visit from our friend, HPK. So stop whatever you're doing, now, and give this Noble Podcast/Peace Prize nominated episode a listen. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
Hey there, Doc-Heads! We're back, and this week we discuss Jimmy J's GIMME DANGER, the story of The Stooges. It's definitely one of the better made punk docs, but please don't let that worry you, or lead you to believe that we let the doc's sophisticated storytelling and overall quality impact our approach in any way. In classic DTD form, we spend more time discussing the last five minutes of the film than we do the rest of the movie, combined. We also spend A LOT of time discussing (important) film-adjacent issues, like Kate from the B-52s guest appearances, marshmallow men, Henry Rollins' feelings, and Mike Z's primo Grateful Dead tape collection. So what more do you need to know? To quote the poet: "Check it out!" --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
This is a very special minisode, Doc-heads -- 50% because we discuss the defining features of "punk" food; 50% because we discuss some legendary punk restaurants, 50% because we discuss carob (a.k.a. hippy ambrosia), 50% because we shout out the vegetarian food truck of a fellow punker, and at least 75% because we are pleased to introduce OUR MOST RECENT SPONSOR! But the biggest reason that this episode is special is because of you, dear listener. That's right; we know that you are special, even though it's not evident to most people. But when you listen to Docs Till Death, you show how special you are, and your now-evident special-ness shines its inner light back onto the show, making it the very special episode that we promised at the beginning of this description. So what are you waiting for? Start listening! Special people don't make liars our of their favorite podcast hosts! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
Attention, Doc-Heads! That time has come -- whether you're prepared or not, and how could you be? It's certainly impossible to even begin to imagine what might be in store when you sit down to listen to the DTD crew sit down and discuss the movie that no less than ROLLING STONES positions as #2 on their "Best Punk Rock Movies of All Time" list. That's right: ROLLING STONES. #2. WOW! Well, in case you haven't grasped what that means (and if you're someone who skipped the title of this episode), it means that this week we're discussing Julien Temple's THE FILTH AND THE FURY -- the movie Rolling Stones deems a classic, and a #2. Wait, what? That doesn't make sense. Guess you'll have to listen to find out if we resolve the apparent contradiction. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
This week, the DTD crew delivers it's first mini-sode, and its a good one! And you can believes us about that, because we're impartial. For the most part, the episode is an apologia for being unapologetic. But we also touch on the ways jam bands have influenced Geoff, Dave Grohl, punk house disagreements, and spooky Halloween-themed punk bands (ever heard of a little band called The Misfits?). Probably not, but you should give them a listen... AFTER you listen to this Podcast Awards nominated episode. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
We're ba-aaack!!! That‘s right, ghouls and goblins, it's October and Season 2 of Docs Till Death kicks off with Todd Phillip's spooky tale of existential dread, "HATED: GG Allin and the Murder Junkies". But Phillip‘s peek into the glory hole that is the life and times of GG Allin isn't just a great watch for the Halloween season; since his death, even more than during his life, this is GG's world, and we at DTD are just trying to figure out how to get by — without getting hit by one of those fecal smothered hot dogs. So join us as we discuss all things GG, except his penis size (what kind of hacks do you take us for?!?!?). --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
We know we said we were taking a full month off, but WE CAN'T QUIT YOU! So we're back with a very special episode that doubles as an award show. We get real serious with each other (letters are opened, some are read, and truths are spoken); then we disregard any effort towards self improvement and instead jump right into our first annual GROHLIES, the awards (named after the almighty Dave Grohl of THEM SIDEWAYS VULCANS fame) that we give out to somewhat random aspects of the movies we watched in season one. This is a very silly one! What's more… you don't even need to watch a movie to not really follow what we're talking about, so give it a listen, then smash that subscribe button! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
Some of you are probably asking “Are they seriously discussing SLC PUNK?!” In response, we'd like to assure you, “Yes. Yes we are.” But if you aren't following this hypothetical conversation, you're probably asking, “What the hell are they talking about?” In that case, we'd like to explain: “We are discussing SLC PUNK for the final review-based episode of season one of Docs Till Death, the punk podcast where old punks discuss punk and hardcore documentaries in a very punk way.” We'd also probably add, “while it might seem on, especially given our name, that we're discussing something other than a documentary, we're always open to trying out new things (kink). And since SLC PUNK has become something of a sacred cow for many punks who came of age in the late 90s, we figured that we'd ceremonially slaughter that milk machine to cap off our immensely successful first season.” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
Hey there, Doc-Heads! We‘re back this week with THE PUNK SINGER, which follows the life and times of Mount Punkmore's Kathleen Hanna. If you're curious why Hanna left Le Tigre during the height of the band's popularity, it's the documentary for you. But… if you‘re curious to hear more about Geoff‘s sincere, deep, and somewhat uncharacteristic reaction to once passing Hanna on the street (IRL), then this is the PODCAST for you. And, if that's not enough, we now have 100% more sponsors and 100% less RHCP references. Sounds good, right? So find a comfy spot, open up that new jigsaw puzzle, and give it a listen! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
It's that time, Doc-heads! We're back and this week we're discussing Salad Days, which we just learned is about the almighty DC hardcore scene (and not the various tasty combinations of greens, other vegetables, fruits, and nuts). You learn something new every day! Anyway, after we overcame our initial disappointment, we discovered a doc that has much to appreciate (including Thirsting More, Egg Hunt, and Beefeater) — even though tomatoes are NEVER EVEN MENTIONED! But we got you covered, smothered, and chunked. So press play and lettuce bring you da heat! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
It's time, Doc-heads! We're back and we're more like a family than ever before — with Grandpa Pete having senior moments and declaring his love for the "Big Brains" (?!?), Geoff Daddy letting you know that he's really disappointed, and Young Matt refusing to stop f'n around with those g'damn devil sticks. Hear all this and more in our new episode on American Hardcore. It's a classic, and OMG, there are SO MANY hc luminary talking heads in this one. But don't stress, ‘cause we sort it all out (by spending way too much time talking about just a select few key players, including Flea and xMobyx). See! We got you covered! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
This week, the DTD crew "Pumps the brakes" (Refused) on watching documentaries — which, strangely, makes the episode an easy entry point to our brand of punk podcast chaos. But don't worry, sports fans; the American Hardcore episode will be up next week. In the meantime, Pete and Geoff do what they do best: keep it punk. They ponder what they've learned and how they've grown. They also work to see how many obscure references to mid 90's hardcore 7”s they can shove in while they make fun of each other. And most excitingly, faithful listeners, you will be treated to a rare (and very spooky) screed from the PATRON saint of hardcore and Docs Till Death, Punko Destructo Esq. himself. So give a listen to this punk therapy session, then spend the the rest of the week — until our American Hardcore episode drops — pondering life‘s newest mystery: has Pete become a low-key Victory records fan? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
This week, we watched ChristCore, a totally normal punk documentary about a totally normal sub-genre of punk. So it makes sense that we had a totally normal punk conversation in which we discuss totally normal punk stuff -- such as what we imagine it's like when the dudes from MITB hang out with the Infest crew, Spotify listener statistics, Chick-fil-A sponsored tours, and faith healers (of course!). And oh yeah! I almost forgot to mention that we spend A LOT of time singing in this one. Turn on, tune in, get totally normal! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
In this one, we discuss Strife's early tour video (VHS!!!), One Truth. In the process, we confront one of the chief podcaster paradoxes: “Can a superfan suspended in reverie take on an analytical posture?“. While Geoff waxes nostalgic, Pete re-evaluates his own tour behavior and Matt says “no more!” to mid 90s Oakleys. It's definitely a weird one, so you probably want to 1) x up, 2) break out the madeleines, and 3) give it a listen. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
Attention Docs-Till-Death-Heads! Break out your passports ‘cause we're heading overseas to spend time with Punk in Africa. That's right, it's our first international doc! And not only did this movie introduce us to a significant cultural moment in early 80s South Africa, it also made us question whether we can say that we truly understand the term “punk.” Listen now, and get lost with us in the swell of floating signifiers! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
Bonus Episode Alert! Matt and Pete sit down with Drew Stone (the director of All Ages, The New York Hardcore Chronicles, and Who the Fuck is this Guy?; the singer for Antidote NYHC; the host of The New York Hardcore Chronicles web series; and the mastermind behind a number of other interesting projects). After taking our lumps, we talk Drew's intro to HC, his career in filmmaking, what he's currently up to, as well as too many other cool things to list here. In an effort to not say too much about what else we discuss, the Docs Till Death crew will leave it at this: sit back, crack a can of Faygo, and enjoy the interview! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
This week, the Docs Till Death crew talks You Weren't There and early Chicago punk. We'd love to tell you, fellow doc-heads, what we have to say about the yin and the yang of punk self awareness and punk performativity, the “get off my lawn” attitude of certain old punks, Chicago deep dish pizza, and other pressing concerns; but YOU WEREN'T THERE with us when we recorded the episode, and we want to hold that fact over your head. But don't worry, you can still listen and find out what happened! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
Sure, 2/3rds of your hosts have sxe tattoos, but that doesn't mean we don't like to get sleep drunk. Listen as Matt soul searches, Geoff slows down his speech to savor every syllable, and Pete reaches new levels of positivity (we didn't think it was possible!). Will these former Mass-holes discover the true meaning of Boston HC? Tune in and find out. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
This week, we're excited to kick things off with our first - and one of THE first - punk docs: "The Decline of Western Civilization." Join us as Matt falls in and out of love with Eugene, Pete harnesses the explosive power of LA's early punk scene, and Geoff enjoys some Beef Bologna. You got a better idea for how to score some punk points? Get a stick-and-poke tattoo? That's not even that punk, poseur! Listen and find out why. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
Welcome to Docs Till Death, the punk podcast where old punks discuss punk and hardcore documentaries in a very punky way. In this mini episode, we introduce ourselves, identify which hardcore bands are our spirit animals, commit libel by suggesting one of your favorite punk labels is actually a slush fund, and announce what documentary we'll be watching for our first full episode. Oi Oi Oi! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
