Today's episode is about "Gimme Danger" (Jim Jarmusch, 2016), which is about Iggy & the Stooges. It's a rags-to-more rags story. We are all at least halfway to Jarmusch-heads. And of course we all love Iggy & the Stooges. If you care about punk rock, or any kind of rock, or music, or just watching Iggy, an extremly articulate and thoughtful person, discussing the fascinating events of his life while surrounded by his laundry, this is the movie for you. Plus: Iggy roasts "Marrakesh Express"! Ron Asheton's phone call with Moe Howard! Mike Watt! And were the Stooges the second-ever jam band? Our Very Special Guest is Dan Koch of the podcast Pretty Good Vibrations. Pretty Good Vibrations analyzes and celebrates pop and rock music and its crucial role throughout our lives.

Hey there, Doc-Heads! We're back, and this week we discuss Jimmy J's GIMME DANGER, the story of The Stooges. It's definitely one of the better made punk docs, but please don't let that worry you, or lead you to believe that we let the doc's sophisticated storytelling and overall quality impact our approach in any way. In classic DTD form, we spend more time discussing the last five minutes of the film than we do the rest of the movie, combined. We also spend A LOT of time discussing (important) film-adjacent issues, like Kate from the B-52s guest appearances, marshmallow men, Henry Rollins' feelings, and Mike Z's primo Grateful Dead tape collection. So what more do you need to know? To quote the poet: "Check it out!" --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
Three weeks after the Joe Jackson concert, Iggy Pop comes to town with Toronto's bandaged electronic mummy, Nash the Slash, in tow. I first and finally got to see Iggy the previous year when he gave a spirited performance at Police Picnic '81, a festival I covered in EP 15: The Boiler. So how did this second appearance, this time at the historic Wonderland Gardens, stack up against that first one from the previous year? Tune in dear listeners for musical scuffles, pushed buttons, and a mini lake of spilled beer. To read the original 2011 blog entry, go to 014. (EP 20) Gimme Danger: Iggy Pop with Nash the Slash, Wonderland Gardens, London, Ontario, Canada, Wednesday October 27, 1982 Next on Stage: Leeds' furious and funky post-punk innovators The Gang of Four make an indelible, unforgettable visit to London, Ontario's Wonderland Gardens, four months after the chaotic Iggy Pop gig at the same venue. Euphoria ensues. I had been listening to the band incessantly during that 1980-83 corridor and was thrilled they were coming. This March 1983 concert was not only my first ticketed gig of a musically busy year, it also marks the start of a new and welcome chapter in my life as well. This podcast recalls the concert but also reflects on key changes in my social life at this time as I began my 20s and finally found my local tribe. Special Guest Phil Robinson, who I met at this time, returns to share his memories of the gig and the party after. Stay tuned for intensity and celebration, a lipstick covered forehead, and finding your tribe. Read the original 2011 blog entry here …. Located in downtown Modesto California as a working theater since 1934. I have had the pleasure of seeing Jim Jarmusch’s 2016 documentary Gimme Danger about The Stooges. It was there that I got to see the history of this amazing theater and it doesn’t hurt that Modesto California is the hometown of legendary filmmaker George Lucas. The winter weather has hit most of America pretty hard. Here in Portland we had an entire weekend of ice and snow, and with no infrastructure to handle such weather the city shut down. So here is a bonus episode of some new tunes I recently discovered, and some classics that I have been playing recently. Enjoy!
Josh took over the podcast today to talk about music and play a few things too. Enjoy!
I was supposed to have a guest DJ on this episode, but unfortunately my buddy Josh Stacey was feeling a bit under the weather. So instead I decided to put together an episode on the fly. So here it is, more music and me talking. Enjoy!
I can't believe i've made it to 17 of these episodes. I honestly thought I would've given up long ago. I'm going to keep making these things even if no one listens because its fun. I wonder if anyone will even read this? Anyway, heres some more music songs and my stupid rambling. Enjoy!
Some more music fun for your ear holes! Send feedback to gimmedangerradio@yahoo, or message me on instagram and twitter @gimmedangerradio. Enjoy!!!

Here we are, another episode of this silly podcast. Things are going to be a little different from here on out. When there is no guest i'm going to try and keep the talking to a minimum, and just stick to playing the tunes; less talk, more rock. I might have little anecdotes here and there about songs, but overall the talking will be kept to a minimum. If you ever want to know more about an artist or the list of songs I played, please feel free to send me an email at gimmedangerradio@yahoo, or shoot me a message on either Instagram or Twitter at gimmedangerradio. THE GOLDEN ERA OF HIP-HOP, VOL. 1 With the news of the passing of MF Doom, I was inspired to make a playlist consisting of my first musical obsession, Hip-Hop. From the late 80's and through the early 90's, I bought and collected hip-hop cassettes and CD's. I had so many that I had multiple shelves containing them. I used to also tape trade episodes of the legendary hip-hop radio show, The Stretch Armstrong Show; later to be known as the Stretch and Bobbito show. I would find the episodes I needed in classified ads in the back of the Source magazine, and would trade with people that needed what I had. This is the first in many episodes dedicated to my love of hip-hop. I hope you enjoy. Don't forget to subscribe to and rate the show wherever you listen to your podcasts. For Episode 10 of Gimme Danger Radio I had the chance to talk about music with fellow Michigan punk kid, Rich Miles. Rich Miles was the bassist of Constatine Sankathi, a DIY hardcore band based out of Kalamazoo, Michigan in the mid '90's. Constatine Sankathi along with fellow Michigan hardcore bands Bev Clone, Current, Ottawa, Ordination of Aaron, ect., were part of a larger DIY hardcore music community across America who's influence on punk and hardcore can still be heard today. You may not know who Constatine Sankathi or any of the other bands I mentioned may be, but chances are if your efavorite band just might have. This week we’re discussing the legendary Stooges. This band needs very little introduction, but we will say they’re considered one of the greats for good reason. Although the Stooges did not receive much success during their initial run in the early 70s, their legacy—in addition to the lengthy and successful solo career of frontman Iggy Pop—continues to influence a laundry list of musicians and fans. They reunited in the early 00s with Minutemen and fIREHOSE bassist Mike Watt. However, after the deaths of founding members Ron and Scott Asheton, the Stooges finally called it quits for good. Eddie Vedder wants you to know he can play an organ as much as Elton John wants you to know he can hoop it up.Ellen DeGeneres is always portrayed as nice, but some people that have worked with her have been sharing stories to the contrary. Camila Cabello & Shawn Mendes would have been better off just getting it on during the One World at Home concert because that's what everyone wants to see & that's what they want to be doing anyway.Kesha wins the award for the most rambling preamble to a performance.Jack Black has us worried as he's packing on the pounds.Mr. Methane should have his own children's show.Despite all the protests on TV, most Americans worry that social distancing lockdowns will end too soon.At least Alex Jones got to get out and get some fresh air over the weekend. It's been 25 Years since loser at life Timothy McVeigh blew up a federal building in Oklahoma City. The cyclist verbally abused by Chris Cuomo breaks his silence, but he just hangs up on us without saying goodbye. It's a few years old, but Marc caught the documentary Gimme Danger about Iggy and The Stooges.Drew went on an 80's movie binge leading to a very in-depth discussion about Ione Skye. The great children's book author Chelsea Clinton has announced that she's disappointed in the country that has been very good to her. While Marc reads some commercials, Drew is going to go take a dump study up on the WNBA draft.Despite Taiwan playing baseball with "social distancing" rule, a bench clearing brawl broke out.Ticketmaster is preparing to refund roughly $2B in ticket sales, while offering incentives for fans willing to hold on to their ticket until the gig is rescheduled. If things go well, the state could be re-opening as soon as May 1st.Everybody is outraged about Florida beaches reopening, but can't people still socially distance on a beach? The country doesn't have enough Coronavirus tests for everybody, but meanwhile Joe Rogan is busy taking multiple tests.Blueface was fed up with quarantine & decided to host a non-socially distanced stripper party that turned into a cat fight.Meghan Markle will be on GMA to go behind the scenes on her stupid elephant voice-over documentary.A recent car chase made Drew realize that chopper cams have ruined car chases & he wants them banned.Land O' Lakes is bailing on the Native American chick holding butter as their company logo.Aubrey Huff is in attendance at a California rally of Coronavirus protesters and is mad at the news.Drew is starting to buy into the conspiracy theories about the Coronavirus being cooked up in a Wuhan lab.Matthew Seligman who played bass for David Bowie has died at 64 from complications related to the Coronavirus.Norm Jones from Traverse City radio has passed. We return to our discussions of filmmaker Jim Jarmusch with this week's focus on his Stooges documentary Gimme Danger.
As I write this, I am currently consuming the Jim Jarmusch documentary about the Stooges, "Gimme Danger." This means nothing, other than the fact that it turns out the Stooges hung out with Nico, and that ridiculously beautiful German model had a hold (artistically!) with two massively influential bands. She is most known, of course, for collaborating with the Velvet Underground on their first record. Which leads me to my real point: Lou Reed. Lou led the aforementioned VU, and by most accounts, was a cantankerous asshole. Let that not lead one to assume that he was an untalented cantankerous asshole, for he was not. In 1989, Mr. Reed released the solo effort "New York." Suffice it to say, some love love this record, others quite less so. Critics were pretty hip to it, but they aren't always right. Without giving away too much, I'll just say that check in to a spirited debate about a document of pre-Giuliani New York, and decide for yourself. You can buy this album on Amazon, don't you know. Gimme Danger with Michael Covel on Trend Following Radio. A new monologue for the week.
Iggy Pop joins Jim Jarmusch to talk about his documentary GIMME DANGER, which chronicles Pop's rise to fame with his band The Stooges. The Whole Shebang: The Minute-by-Minute Velvet Goldmine Podcast
In Minute 100 of The Whole Shebang, Mike and Jenny take just a brief moment to celebrate their hundredth episode and examine Jenny and Mike's respective singing talents and Mike's taking karaoke entirely too seriously, before cracking into: the crowd reaction to “Gimme Danger,” Brian's turning away from Curt's feelings and an opportunity to return to him, our sequel featuring Curt-as-knight-in-shining-armor saving the prince (Brian), the similarities between Brian Slade and Darth Vader (look! 5 and 5 again!), the similarities between Velvet Goldmine and David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest, how Velvet Goldmine would be a great conversation-after-cinema-over-coffee movie, Arthur's presence backstage and how Arthur is Todd Haynes's proxy as well as the audience's, and how sad it is to be coming closer to the end of our podcast. Find us on the web at thewholeshebangpodcast.com, and on Facebook, Twitter, and Patreon at wholeshebangpod.
The Whole Shebang: The Minute-by-Minute Velvet Goldmine Podcast
In Minute 99 of The Whole Shebang, Mike and Jenny examine the arrival of Brian Slade in trenchcoated and be-fedora'd disguise at the Death of Glitter show, exactly who if anyone noticed him, how the end of “Gimme Danger” gives the film audience some closure on Brian and Curt, the fact that this is the first time all four main characters in the same place, Curt's questionable belt and our coming around on Ewan's physique in the movie and how no one could healthily look like Iggy Pop, Mandy's emotional reaction to Curt's performance, and our own crackpot theories about how music is able to evoke emotions in the human heart and mind, how lyrics add to (or detract from) that emotional connection, and what exactly comprises the language of music. The Whole Shebang: The Minute-by-Minute Velvet Goldmine Podcast
In Minute 98 of The Whole Shebang, Mike and Jenny look at Curt's continued performance of “Gimme Danger,” the arrival of Mandy and her relatively low-key arrival at the Death of Glitter concert, what everyone's funereal roles are at the Death of Glitter, the fact that Arthur has been around Mandy, ten years before their big interview, Ewan McGregor's musical performance as Curt Wild contrasted with his Moulin Rouge! performance, the irony of rejecting glam's aesthetic and inevitably constructing a new aesthetic, and the ambiguity of Mandy's presence at the show. The Whole Shebang: The Minute-by-Minute Velvet Goldmine Podcast
In Minute 97 of The Whole Shebang, Mike and Jenny hope you like “Gimme Danger,” because you're about to get a hell of a lot of it, first tackling the lyrics and whether they're about heroin or a relationship and what that means for Curt, the S&M elements within “Gimme Danger” and glam in general, what happens when you go to a gig and the singer starts writhing on the stage and you can't see them, the audience's reaction to Curt including Pearl's appreciation and Arthur's raw sensual appeal, Arthur's transference of his fandom (and sexual attraction) to Curt, a little on Iggy Pop's late ‘70s output and its influence on punk and goth, Todd Haynes' decision to use only music from 1974 and previous in the movie, and Jenny's joyful discovery of the word “diagetic.” Find us on the web at thewholeshebangpodcast.com, and on Facebook, Twitter, and Patreon at wholeshebangpod.
The Whole Shebang: The Minute-by-Minute Velvet Goldmine Podcast
In Minute 96 of The Whole Shebang, Mike and Jenny start off with a seemingly-huge tangent to the “stranger danger” paranoia of their childhoods (thanks to the presence of “Gimme Danger” in this minute), then we dive into Arthur's frantic phone call to find Curt Wild, Curt's pretending to not be on the other end of the line, Curt's strange grungy garage-like office, the two men, presumably from the Reynolds regime, watching Curt carefully, why the Reynolds administration is so scared that word will leak out that Tommy Stone is Brian Slade, crackpot theories about subliminal messages and backmasking, which we link back up to the 1980s paranoia about stranger danger, the Parents Music Resource Center under Tipper Gore, what the hell kind of name is Tipper, rock opera dystopias from The Wall to The Apple, and the unsatisfying ending to the film's 1984 segment and Jenny's pitch for a Velvet Goldmine sequel. Welcome to the House of Crouse. Here edited audio from a press conference I hosted with 'Gimme Danger" director Jim Jarmusch and his subject, Iggy Pop. By 1973 Iggy and the Stooges had imploded, leaving behind three commercially unsuccessful records and a slug trail of decadence and unfulfilled expectations across two continents. “Gimme Danger” is Jarmusch’s grotty documentary about the life, death and influence of The Stooges. It's a first hand account of what the director calls “the greatest rock and roll band ever." C'mon in and sit a spell!
Tyler and David discuss what they've been watching, including Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, Voyage of Time: The IMAX Experience, Sky Ladder: The Art of Cai Guo-Qiang, The Purple Rose of Cairo, Dr. Mabuse: The Gambler, Mascots, E.T. the Extraterrestrial, The Watermelon Woman, Love & Friendship, No Country for Old Men, Author: The JT LeRoy Story, You're Next, Toni Erdmann, The Thing, The Ivory Game, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Gimme Danger, Beloved, Zootopia, The Edge of Seventeen, The Love Witch, Luke Cage, Insecure, South Park, The Good Place, Saturday Night Live and Project Runway.
As the guys imagine their dream pets, Kris reveals some horrifying aspects of Venus flytrap ownership at the start of this week’s episode. Then Dave jumps into the Tom Hanks/Ron Howard vehicle INFERNO (at 5:24), a movie that contains a surprising amount of swearing (at least according to him). He laments the picture’s misuse of Ben Foster, while also wondering aloud why Hanks and Howard continue making rotten films from shit Dan Brown books. Next up is Evan to take on the Jim Jarmusch documentary GIMME DANGER (at 36:10), which chronicles the rise, fall, resurgence, and influence of Iggy and the Stooges. Jarmusch has the right sensibilities and sympathy for its subject, but his toolkit is limited and the experience suffers despite some fascinating insights about Iggy Pop’s upbringing and his attitude as musician. Kris closes out the episode with his exploration of the 1994 Academy-Award-Winner BURNT BY THE SUN (at 48:06), a Russian movie by Nikita Mikhalkov that tackles some heavy subject matter, yet still contains a lot of antics and shenanigans. Before ending his segment, Kris teases analysis of the movie’s unexpected sequels, which he’ll conduct on next week’s show.
