This week we talk about the first release of the classic line-up of Government Issue, "Boycott Stabb". It's a record that was important to both me and Jeff growing up. GI were one of my favorite bands to see live. John Stabb was, by turns, thoroughly intense, vulnerable and hilarious on stage. Tom Lyle always played at a crushing volume with extreme precision. Marc Alberstadt was one of the best drummers of the era. The bassist slot was always rotating, but always excellent players. This record is, in many ways , the re-birth of the band and the beginning of GI mach 2. Some of their best songs start here. We were lucky enough to have a conversation with the architect of their sound, Tom Lyle, in what is hopefully the first of a series of conversations about this mighty band's career. At age twenty-four, he began a storied career as an A&R executive at Elektra Records that started with signing Metallica in the summer of 1984, changing the entire landscape of rock 'n' roll and heavy metal. He also worked in A&R for both Palm Pictures and Geffen Records and was thrilled to executive-produce albums by Cyndi Lauper, Public Image Ltd, White Zombie, and Nina Simone. Alago grew up in Brooklyn, New York, in a large, spirited, and devoted Puerto Rican family. Through his early passion for music, art, theater, and photography, he soon found himself rubbing elbows with many downtown NYC scene makers, from Stiv Bators to Jean Michel Basquiat, Cherry Vanilla and Wayne County to Deborah Harry and Robert Mapplethorpe. As an underage teenager going to Max's Kansas City, CBGB, and various art galleries, Alago also began running The Dead Boys fan club. A few years later, he became the assistant music director for legendary nightclubs the Ritz and the Red Parrot. In the late 1980s, he was diagnosed with HIV, which manifested into full-blown AIDS ten years later. He survived to continue his music career, but in 2005, he left music to pursue his other love: photography. Alago went on to publish three bestselling books: Rough Gods, Brutal Truth, and Beautiful Imperfections with German-based publisher Bruno Gmünder. He has since overcome his longtime addiction to drugs and alcohol. In his clean and sober life, he has reconnected with his family, continues to be a working photographer as well as record producer, and only through the grace of his 12-Step program is he able to live this big, beautiful life. In 2017, a documentary directed by Drew Stone and produced by Michael Alex on Alago's wildly successful career in music was released in theaters and on Netflix, entitled Who the Fuck Is That Guy? Drew Stone is an American film director, producer, editor and musician. His works include music videos, commercials, documentary films and television. He founded the New York City-based film production company Stone Films NYC and played an active role in the early stages of the American musical movement known as hardcore punk. He was the co-founder and lead singer of the hardcore bands The Mighty C.O.’s of Boston, Massachusetts and The High & The Mighty of New York. Stone is also known for his career as the front man for New York City’s Antidote since 1984. A native New Yorker, Stone was born in Queens and raised in the Bronx. His father, Arny Stone, was a filmmaker who won an Academy Award for his film, The Critic, starring Mel Brooks. Evan B. Stone, His brother is also a film director, editor and cinematographer, whose credits include CMT’s Guntucky, Syfy’s Destination Truth, CBS’s The Amazing Race, MTV True Life, and the Emmy Award winning Current TV.After working for years as a crew member on film sets in a variety of roles in 1992 Stone formed New York City-based film Production Company, Stone Films NYC. He produced numerous music videos including Run-DMC, Onyx, Type O Negative, Insane Clown Posse, King’s X, and Biohazard. He later went on to direct videos for Agnostic Front, Madball, Sub-Zero, and Garth “Culti” Vader. Joining forces with his brother Evan as “The Stone Brothers” he directed music videos for various artists including Vanilla Ice, and Channel Zero.
