Formed in 1994, they gained international attention after signing with Kung Fu Records and collaborating with bands like The Ataris and producing with Bill Stevenson of The Descendents. 30 years ago Obese Mick had a vision: a showcase of bands on his label, Fat Wreck Chords.Join Tom and Niallism for a flippant and playful discussion about that very compiliation: Fat Music for Fat People.Ably assisted by guest contributors Dave Shackleford and Danny Barrett off The Crash Mats, we discuss whether time has altered our perceptions of the comp, which footballer each song is most like, home computer care.Did you have pubes when this came out? What happens when your facebook page is hacked, do you even care? Do you want facts about the bands on the comp? If the answer to any of these questions is yes or no, you should probably listen to this.

We sit down to discuss how Nonstarter came to be, and that branched into discussions about audio engineering, past projects, and how Shaun has items sitting in the Punk Rock Museum in Las Vegas. Talking to these two made me realize how lucky we are in Dallas to have the talent we do. Question Kyle joins me for musings on concept albums as I fondly recall the 1999 gimmick-compilation "Short Music for Short People" from the pop-punk mavens at Fat Wreck Chords. The idea: 101 bands, 101 songs, each one 30 seconds long. The royalty of the genre all contributed - Blink-182, NOFX, The Offspring, everyone you remember from the late Clinton years. An impressive, if not especially listenable, idea for an album. The podcast opens with a brief sample of "Ketchup Soup" by the Teen Idols, their contribution to this album. To purchase the album, please visit the Fat Wreck website for a digital download or other format. Bonus: 29 minutes in I start singing "Uptown Girl." Bracket is an American rock band from Forestville, California formed in 1992. They have issued numerous albums, EPs and singles since its inception, including many releases for Caroline Records and Fat Wreck Chords. Their sound could most easily be described as power pop influenced punk rock with a continued focus on vocal harmonies. Bracket emerged during the pop punk resurgence of the early 1990s and released its first two albums 924 Forestville St. (1994) and 4-Wheel Vibe (1995) on Caroline Records. Following a staff shake-up, the label dropped the group and cancelled the release of its third album Like You Know in 1996. Bracket's next two albums Novelty Forever (1997) and When All Else Fails (2000) were put out by Fat Wreck Chords, who had previously issued 7-inch vinyl for the band. They released Live in a Dive (2002) which gathered some of the band's best-known material into one performance. Requiem came out in (2006), released by Takeover Records. They have a 70 minute album consisted of one “song”, the 28th installment of their “Warren's Song” series. The band recorded nearly 100 short fragments of songs, with the intention of piecing them together to create the 70 minute “Warren's Song Pt. 28”. Bracket completed work on their ninth studio album “Too Old to Die Young” in late 2018, which came out on Fat in 2019. I got Angelo on the Skype and this is what we chat about Hen House Brewing Bracket starting off as a cover band Being one of Fat Mike's favorite bands How were they perceived by Fat Wreck Crowds Their album Requiem Recording Live in a Dive Their split with Humble Beginnings Questions that Josh Humble submitted Their 70 minute song Beavis and Butthead Their latest release on Fat And a ton more Feel free to support the podcast for as little as $1 a month through Patreon

In an over 25-year-long career he has worked with many artists including Jay-Z, Lita Ford, Tonic, Megadeth, Alice Cooper, Cheap Trick, Usher, Patti LaBelle, and Gladys Knight. Ryan was THE guy when it came to producing the bands on Fat Wreck Chords. Some of those bands were NOFX, Lagwagon, No Use For A Name, Propaghandi, Pulley, Hi-Standard, Tilt, Bracket, and a shit ton of others that probably graced your CD collection. There are so many good stories in this and I think a lot of you who love or loved the Fat bands from the late 90s will absolutely love them. There's a lot of Million Dollar Man laughs in this show. Just sayin'. Mike wore a dumb hat in high school that everybody hated. Ravishing Rick Rude brings a flow of memories back for John Scott. What was the first thing you ever bought on the internet? Was it a shirt? A mug? drugs? Luke used to love Eastbay catalogs. He also bought bootlegged Seinfeld. Scott was hardcore into Fat-Wreck stuff online. Mike bought Andro and DXM with his brand new credit card that he didn't know how to use as a freshman at college. We got your emails covered! We start with Danny who finally reveals the meaning behind squids! What director is must-see for you when their movie comes out? Also, Jon Bernthal is a positive bad-ass. Luke and Mike get pissed about people immediately dismissing a Heat sequel, but will rush out to see every Marvel movie right away. Former guest host Jason emails the show and wants to know if RDJ will get canceled again. Mr. Pink sneaks a message in at the end of the show, but we will give his message more time next week. Keep the emails coming! We decided to close the show with Lost In The Super Market by The Clash. If any of this nonsense inspires you for better or for worse, email the show at isitsafepod@gmail.com
Hey there, DTD-ers! We've got a news flash for you, apparently: DTD now stands or Descendants Till Death, apparently. "Why is that?", you ask. Well, we'll tell you why -- because for this episode, we have the pleasure of talking to Justin Wilson, who is part of the braintrust behind the Descendants/All documentary FILMAGE, which we discussed last week. But Justin doesn't just talk about the movie; we also talk about what it takes to get a punk doc off the ground, Justin's other punk projects (including A Fat Wreck), and -- of course -- pizza delivery punk! It's a good one, so give it a listen now, and make sure to listen all the way through to the end to HEAR THE DOCS TILL DEATH CREW LIKE YOU'VE NEVER HEARD US BEFORE! For more FILMAGE (including a bonus bonus feature comprised of an additional 50 minutes of Descendants/All footage), check out the movie's site: https://filmagemovie.com . --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
This episode is for fans of Fat Wreck, Hot Water Music and being popular in Europe. Joking aside, I am very pleased to bring you this discussion that Joe McMahon from Smoke or Fire and I had one afternoon! I had always been a fan of the band but never really knew much about their origin stories, why the band had to change their name and how they signed to Fat Wreck Chords to begin with. Listen, learn and most importantly listen to Smoke or Fire. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Peterborough's Das Kapitans are in the hot seat this week for the Tom and Niallism treatment. They put out an ALBUM PER MONTH in 2021 (how is that even possible?) which has cemented their place in punk rock history. They mix whimsy anger and video game disappointment in their lyrics. We chat all things Peterborough, all things Scary Clown, we make the drummer pick which of his mates' arse cracks he prefers and we hear a tale of woe from a French highway.Tom's been back to Nuneaton, Niall seems chipper and we have the premiere of "Lucy's Lucky Dip", which this week features Fat Wreck alumni. Music is from : The Sect, Hooten 3 Car, Identity, The Red Bastards, Fabulous Disaster and Stray Cats.
Bostin'. That's what you'll be saying after hearing our conversation with Singer, Songwriter, Sound Engineer, Producer to the stars and all round good lad, Mr Davey Warsop.Davey left the tropical climes of Bromsgrove to seek the punk rock dream in LA and so far, that gamble is paying off! We discuss the punk rock royalty he bumps into in Wholefoods, his work with NOFX, Green Day and many more. Davey imparts sage advice to young sound engineers, remembers the time he was signed to a major and we discuss his early punk heroes and neighbours.Tom gets Niall's diary mixed up, Niall has a fact about a particular branch of animal medical science and much, much more. Songs this week are from: Kunt Cobain & The Nirvanas, Tear Them Down, The Linda Lindas, Shooter McGavin, an exclusive, never before heard track from Beat Union, Suzi Moon, Face To Face, Incisions and School Damage
It's another virtual trip abroad this week, namely to French Canada to have a chat with Mr Hugo Mudie. We talk Sainte Catherines, Fat Wreck, Leatherface and hear Hugo's solo tunes, hear about the festival he created, burning Quebec questions and a whole load more. Tom looks back on a gig he attended on a Sunday afternoon, Niallism is still recovering and we recieve our first communique from North of the border. Music this week is from Sainte Catherines, Medictation, The Beatdown, Yesterday's Ring, Culture Shock, Vamos, Burning Lady, Beauty School Dropout, The Melbies and FM Rodeo.
You're not gonna beleive this...well...maybe you will. Russ Rankin, who we have been talking about every week since January, hung out with us for almost an hour and a half! There is a lot of stories about the early days of Good Riddance, what it's like to be in a band with a Flyers fan, what it's like to get called up to sing for your favourite band and who does Russ prefer, LIfetime or Kid Dynamite. There is a lot here. Thanks again to Russ for joining us.
On today's episode, I'm excited because I had the opportunity to speak with Frank Tsoukalas from the Chicago band Much The Same. Frank is the bassist and co-songwriter for Much The Same. He is also the songwriter and singer of the band Burn Rebuild. Frank and I have a lot in common. We both grew up on Fat Wreck and Epitaph, we both have bands that were heavily influenced and inspired by those types of bands and it's reflected in the music of our bands. I also wanted to have Frank on because his social media presence always makes me laugh and it's always entertaining. I knew that Frank, like me, enjoys exercising and lifting weights, so I knew we would probably discuss that. I also wanted to know what compelled Much The Same to put out a new full length over 13 years after the previous record. It's a fantastic record called "Everything is Fine", and it was one of my favorite records of 2019. So, we get into that. This is a lot of fun. I had a blast speaking with Frank, I think you'll enjoy our convo. So, without further ado, please enjoy this multiple-topic conversation with Mr. Frank Tsoukalas.

Dan is a Fest-going, chicken wing loving punk from Ottawa, Canada that moved to Toronto more than a decade ago. He worships at the altar of Yemin. He runs Last Wishes Supply Co with Chris Cresswell of The Flatliners and can grow a beard. Josh got a job as a bartender 15 years ago so hasn't been going to too many shows since then. Before that though he worked with the label Underground Operations and hosted a weekly punk rock show on Toronto's 102.1 The Edge. He runs bartenderatlas.com with his wife Jess. His ankle clicks from skateboarding. He cannot grow a beard.
Dan and Josh talk about the songs Dubious Glow of Excess, Eversmile and Tell Me Why. Also, what would you do if you won the lottery? Short term friendships. How important is Bad Religion? Plus some listener questions. Dubious Glow of Excess- 4:12Eversmile- 17:45Tell Me Why- 31:05

We talked with Grady, Johnny and Dante of Anxious. Let it be known we talked to them early in the month of March so the ominous cloud of doom and actual anxiety and nervousness of a quarantined society wasn't on our mind quite so presently as it is now. Escape with us back to a time when we could talk about European tour dates as if they were absolutely happening and not possibly cancelled or postponed (really, anything mentioned that you're curious about you should check the status of because it's not a definite). [caption id="attachment_5989" align="alignnone" width="474"] Dante (Left), Grady (Center), Johnny (Right)[/caption] We talked about the formation of the band at a very young age from being heavily influenced early on by Fat Wreck bands and morphing into the band they are today - a band with a couple small (7" and cassette) releases on Triple-B Records with a full length on the way. A band that has opened reunion shows for Saves the Day and done sold out gigs with Knuckle Puck. They have level heads and are really working hard at this with all the youthful energy they can possibly use (have I mentioned how young they are? Dante is finishing his senior year of High School right now!). We are a record store that has a heavy emphasis on the left of center / underground music of the world. Whether it be underappreciated or just has a niche audience, marginalized or just off the radar it's all of interest to us. With the show we'll generally have a localized focus. We'll discuss what is in our personal rotation at the moment. We'll talk to guests who have to do with all of the above. And we'll talk about specific dealings with the store. If you have input you're welcome to contact us through email (redscroll@gmail.com). Oh, and please do subscribe! New episodes on the first of every month! So many of these blog posts open with a description of how I first found out about my interviewee. It wasn't until I sat down to write this one that I realised how being able to pinpoint such instances of discovery might be an odd thing. Do people tend to remember the exact moment when they first discovered art that moved them? One day in 2008, Build & Burn by The Loved Ones dropped through my letterbox. Back in those days, when I was running Daily Dischord, I'd get promo CDs through the door every day. We'd only started the site a year before, and to get sent something by a band on Fat Wreck was a pretty big deal for a raggedy punk like me. The sheer volume of stuff I'd get sent on a weekly basis not only made it difficult to listen to everything, but it quickly sapped my desire for listening to many of the records I received. Put simply, many of the albums and EPs just weren't that good, and there's only so many press releases you can read before you realise they're all basically saying the same thing.Fat Wreck Chords was a symbol of quality. It still is. I put Build & Burn into my CD player purely because it was a Fat Wreck release. I don't even think I read the press release, I just put that disk in and hit play.I fell in love with the band immediately. The lyrics, all reflections of love and loss in working class America, spoke to me straight away. This was years before I really got into Springsteen, and when I listen to Dave Hause now, I can see the influence. At the time though there was a heart, a truth to the music which hit me in the chest as soon as I'd heard it.I think that I was primed to accept this music through The Gaslight Anthem, whose album Sink or Swim had me rapt in enthusiasm the previous year. There was a connection between those two bands which made me feel something real; not just tunefulness, but a truth and a sincerity. It was the way these songs chronicled the lives of strangers that struggled to be heard as they found themselves caught up in the mechanisations of blue-collar America which really got me. It held a power which spoke to me in some deep way. It's probably how people felt when they heard The Boss for the first time.Dave's career has gone from strength to strength since then. First, he embraced the more Americana, folksy, acoustic side of his music before expanding his scope, taking in those heartland rock vibes which seems to ooze from the pores of many of those involved in music from the Mid-Atlantic.His new album Bury Me in Philly seems to be the final piece of the puzzle which connects Dave Hause, frontman of The Loved Ones, with Dave Hause, the acoustic, alt-rock troubadour. It also adds many other strings to his fantastic songwriting bow.I've been a fan of his music for years and it was a total honour to chat with him. He's one of the nicest dudes I've met in a long time.I hope you enjoy this interview. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Visit acast.com/privacy for more information.
MHH168 - Documentary Film Maker Shaun Colon breaks down as best he can how much work was put into the brand new punkumentary all about Fat Wreck Chords and the unlikely legacy of ethics, chosen family and punk music. A Fat Wreck covers a ton of ground regarding the history and legacy bands on Fat and we get into that as well as the day to day tactics and habits it took to get this film made. The Fat Wreck Chords community wanted this documentary and they showed it by funding 2 separate rounds of online crowdfunding. There's some further context in this conversation about the interviews with Fat Mike, some of Shaun's experiences getting interviews that could certainly enhance your enjoyment of the film. So I feel pretty good about this in general. You know me, I love hearing about the tactics and workflows of artists and makers. Shaun is no exception. He used not only his skills as a film maker but also used sheer patience and endurance to get some of the shots for this. We get well into the actual film itself as well as how it was made. Another good one. Thanks for listening. MHH 168 How to Make a Fat Wreck with Shaun Colon (Director) Country: USA, Running Time: 85min A FAT WRECK tells the story of founders Fat Mike (of the legendary punk band NOFX) and his ex-wife Erin Kelly-Burkett, spanning the birth, growth, struggles, and survival of the Fat Wreck Chords label. Half inspirational story of chosen family and community, half debauchery and occasionally involuntary drug use, the film blazes exciting new ground in the cinematic genre of puppet-driven punk rock music documentary filmmaking. Arguably the best film in the history of American cinema featuring a dominatrix spanking a puppet. Where might I learn more about A FAT WRECK you ask?
