Another powerful and open conversation this week with my guest Daragh Fleming from Cork in Ireland. Daragh lost his best friend through suicide at the age of 17 and he shares how he got lost in himself, not being able to feel any emotion. In doing so, he wrote his first book - Lonely Boy which in turn would help him to connect to others and become an advocate for breaking the stigma of mental health.Daragh has gone onto to write another book - A Brief Inhalation which is available to pre-order from the 31st March and is being launched in Waterstones in Cork on the 15th April. Pre-Order his book here: https://www.brokensleepbooks.com/product-page/daragh-fleming-a-brief-inhalationDaragh has been recognised for his work appearing in several literary magazines including Southword, Crannog, Stand and Gutter. The country is now paying for the pathologies of the oligarchs and baddies who were stuffed into lockers when they were kids. And let's be honest: A chunk of MAGA doesn't mind the sexual assaults at all—they "put women in their place." Meanwhile, Gaetz's replacement, Pam Bondi, was an active member of the attempted coup, Elon's plan to slash the federal workforce would cut a minuscule part of the budget, the oil men don't want to produce more oil, and Democrats have to go back to their 90s-style economic messaging. In our second episode of the season, we discuss Neil's superb, recently published book Music Films: Documentaries, Concert Films and Other Cinematic Representations of Popular Music. We explore their significance, evolution, and the complexities surrounding their creation and reception, along with Neil's reflections on the challenges of writing for diverse audiences and the expectations of music fans. The conversation touches on the validity of music films in modern culture, the messiness of the genre, and the importance of representation, particularly regarding black artists and women in music. They also examine the ethical implications of music documentaries and the power dynamics at play in the portrayal of artists. Neil's book is so comprehensive we couldn't cover everything but some of the films under discussion include Don't Look Back (dir. D. A. Pennebaker, 1967), Lonely Boy (dir. Roman Kroitor and Wolf Koenig, 1962), Whatstaxx (dir. Mel Stuart), The Punk Singer (dir. Kathleen Hanna), In Bed with Madonna (dir. Alek Keshishian, 1991), The Last Angel of History (dir. John Akomfrah, 1996), American Interior (dirs. Dylan Goch, Gruff Rhys), Miss Americana (dir. Lana Wilson, 2020), and many more. 05-20-2024 Countries In Recession Won't Be "Lonely Boy"-------------------------Any old report keeps us waiting. Waiting, waiting. Powell's a Lonely Boy, He's a Lonely Boy. Oh, Powell, you are the love that keeps us waiting. The latest tame inflation dropped rates. Many expected a strong report that would have pushed rates significantly higher.Avoid emphasizing one report; instead, pay attention to coalescing trends. Megatrends suggest the next recession will affect more countries than usual.Amid the eternal war between bulls and bears, the bulls merely shifted the guillotine a notch. The new 10-year yield range is 4.67 to 4.18.Oh, Powell, you are the love that keeps us waiting.------------------------------Song: Lonely Boy (2011)

Coming from a challenging, working class upbringing in the United Kingdom, Steve Jones discovered his outlet in music - as founding guitarist of the groundbreaking punk rock band the Sex Pistols. Despite the release of only one album,”Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols,” the band changed the course of music and history - vocalizing issues of class in songs like “Anarchy in the U.K.” – and influencing fashion, art and society. Since then, Jones has continued to play music (both solo and with bands The Professionals and Neurotic Outsiders) and was the host of the popular, long-running radio show, “Jonesy's Jukebox.” In 2022, his insightful memoir, “Lonely Boy,” was adapted into the FX television series, the Danny Boyle-directed “Pistol.” Steve Jones talks to host Alec Baldwin about the roots of punk rock, coming up alongside Vivienne Westwood and Chrissie Hynde, and the road to getting clean – and beginning life anew.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Anyway, in our inaugural segment we discuss the airplane lady who freaked out when she claimed to see a person who wasn't real. And Austin is about to set a record for consecutive, hot days. Today we spoke with Daragh Fleming - Writer and award-winning mental health activist Daragh Fleming is an author, freelance writer, and award-winning mental health blogger from Cork, Ireland. He has an MA in Linguistics, a BA in Applied Psychology, and a head full of notions as he says. Daragh has a passion for normalising the chat around mental health, and is the founder of Thoughts Too Big, a blog and enterprise that focuses on overcoming daily mental health issues. Daragh's debut in non-fiction, Lonely Boy, a collection of essays on mental health arrives on November 24th 2022. Please support this work by buying a copy! Daragh shared with us his traumatic personal story about why mental health is what he writes and speaks about - also, why that period paved the way for him to study the mind in university. He explained his current 'writer in residence' role in Spain, and what his writing process looks like. We unpacked where he finds inspiration for poetry, fiction and nonfiction, what trains had to do with writing, some of his most popular blogs on mental health - and his charitable support for Pieta House, Crisis Helpline, etc. He explained the meaning behind his motto 'be sound and drink water', and how to recognise if someone is struggling with their mental health. This was a powerful episode for us...thanks Daragh! Highlights:

Tom Tikka picked up the guitar at the tender age of six after hearing Paul Anka's “Lonely Boy” in his father's old Chevrolet. Soon afterwards, he began writing songs. Tom's infatuation with music only deepened after his uncle Timo "Oippa" Oinonen introduced him to the concept of lead guitar and even more importantly to the music of such legendary groups as The Beatles and The Doors.

Gu-day DTDers! We're so glad you're here, because THIS is THE one that all you true punks out there have been waiting for! That's right, this week, we discuss the pluralization of proper nouns!!! We know, it's heady stuff; but all of us at DTD headquarters felt it was a conversation that needed to happen, and we're proud of the result. Through open dialogue, we tore down walls and build bonds of friendship. And, oh yeah, we also talk about the first episode of the Danny Boyle directed miniseries "PISTOL," an adaptation of Steven Jones' memoir about his time with the Sex Pistols, "Lonely Boy." And all of that is just a long way to say that if you're excited by the idea of Chrissie Hynde singing along to Otis Redding on a jukebox draped in bondage gear, then THIS is THE episode for YOU! So don't delay, press play! That's what I say! OK? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message

Here's the first episode of the new Jonesy's Jukebox podcast. To start off and to get geared up for the premiere of the tv show "Pistol,” based on Steve Jones' autobiography “Lonely Boy,” Jonesy is presenting some of the characters important in Sex Pistols history. One of the most consequential is founding manager Malcolm McLaren, strikingly portrayed in the series by actor Thomas Brodie-Sangster. In this podcast, you'll hear the real McLaren. Steve Jones hadn't seen Malcolm McLaren since he ran off with the filthy lucre in the days of the Great Rock n Roll Swindle. In this episode, Jonesy revisits the old-school Indie 103.1 radio encounter in 2005 when the Embezzler and the Thief saw each other for the first time in over 25 years. But Jonesy will explain it, so just listen! There have been some bits and bobs out there on the web but for the first time since it aired live, here is the entire interview with the notorious raconteur Malcolm McLaren. *Bonus- Jonesy's whistles for a winner.
