James Spooner is a writer, filmmaker and visual artist from Southern California. He grew up as one of two black punk rockers in the small town of Apple Valley, and he wrote a critically acclaimed graphic novel about his experience called “The High Desert,” released in 2022, twenty years after the release of his groundbreaking documentary “Afro Punk.” When I read the book, I found it so moving that I immediately reached out to him and invited him to be a guest on this Afro Punk, The High Desert, Black Punk Now!program. James joined me for a live interview in Olympia at the Capitol Theater after a screening of his film, and we discussed his experience growing up as a black punk in the desert, the avenues that led him to direct his first film, being the father of a Gen-Z black punk, his career as a tattoo artist, and his new anthology book “Black Punk Now,” which was edited by Spooner and Chris L. Terry and came out last October. James Spooner is the author of The High Desert out now from Harper Collins, available here - https://www.harpercollins.com/products/the-high-desert-james-spooner?variant=40828374777890 Set in the late eighties and starring James as a teenager discovering punk rock and as the book's synopsis says, "Mixed race, acutely aware of his Blackness, James doesn't know where he fits until he meets Ty, a young Black punk who introduces him to the school outsiders—skaters, unhappy young rebels, caught up in the punk groundswell sweeping the country." It's a memorable coming-of-age tale with the rebellious nature of punk rock driving the pining teens seem to universally feel, that yearning to discover themselves and to go somewhere else. James also made the documentary Afro-Punk, a look at the reality of being a black punk told through the lives of people who live it. We talk about how the tagline of his book came about - Black. Punk. Nowhere. - how he focused on writing characters with unique voices, the challenge of moving past pain when writing memoir, and even when exactly the narration boxes were added to his story. Also, we talk about two of the best punk shows he's ever been to and the magnificent joy of being at a punk show and experiencing it with a crowd. James is the man responsible for the 2003 documentary on punk rock and its racially divided history called Afropunk, and has many other projects previously released, but he has a new book coming out on May 19th, 2022 called The High Desert which is an autobiographical graphic novel about growing up in Apple Valley, California and becoming a punk rocker. The book is a firestorm of the radical new music scene, growing up with separated parents, and dealing with racism and acceptance in White America in the 80's. My guest on the podcast today has developed an original and compelling approach to forecasting the future and beating investment markets while doing so. Marko Papic is a Partner and Chief Strategist at Clocktower Group, an alternative investment asset management firm based in Santa Monica, California. He leads the firm’s Strategy Team, providing bespoke research to clients and partners on geopolitics, macroeconomics, and markets. Marko holds an MA in Political Science from the University of Texas at Austin and an MA from the University of British Columbia. He’s the author of Geopolitical Alpha: An Investment Framework for Predicting the Future, a book that introduces his constraints-based framework to investors; something we discuss in this episode. Geopolitical Alpha posits that investors should ignore the media-hyped narratives, insights from “smoke-filled rooms,” and most of their political consultants and, instead, focus exclusively on the measurable, material constraints facing policymakers. Here’s my conversation with Marko Papic, author of Geopolitical Alpha, in episode 514 of Informed Choice Radio. We hope you enjoyed today’s episode. James Spooner is a visual artist, a parent of two, and a vegan tattoo artist who runs Monocle Tattoo in Los Angeles. James embodies the DIY spirit and has built his life around his punk rock values and is the creator 2003’s Afropunk documentary and is currently work on a graphic novel which is chronicles his experience growing up as a teenaged black punk in the California desert, entitled The High Desert. In addition to his website and Instagram account @spoonersnofun, you can now also find his comics featured in Razorcake magazine.Afropunk speaks to questions around how Blackness is defined and expressed and it remains a relevant as ever. Like Mimi Nguyen’s zine Evolution of a Race Riot, Afropunk has profoundly impacted and helped shape and expand the conversation about race and punk identity and has remained a touch point for many throughout the years.Hanif Abdurraqib captures the enduring need for the critique of racism within and beyond the punk scene Afropunk raised and the importance of the community James’ work helped build. In an essay entitled “I Wasn’t Brought Here, I Was Born: Surviving Punk Long Enough to Find Afropunk,” he writes, “Too often, the choice in punk rock and D.I.Y. spaces for non-white men [and I would add many other marginalized identities] is a choice between being tokenized, or being invisible.” As James says about Afropunk in our interview, “I set out to do the punkest thing I could do at the time, which was critique punk rock.”Creating and touring with the Afropunk film, as well as organizing the subsequent festival of the same name (which James is no longer involved in) is just one example of James’ embodiment of the DIY spirit of punk and his commitment to keep creating and building community around his politics and interests. He has stayed true to his values throughout his many projects and as a parent. As he says, “A really big, important part of the punk scene I try to impart on people now is that punk audacity to just do things without permission.”In our conversation we talk a lot about being teenagers coming into punk, especially because that is the focus of his book-in-progress The High Desert. We discussed how he discovered punk as an answer to the “perfect storm of adolescence” and the frustration of being one of two black punks in the high desert of California and the “racial exceptionalism” he experienced there. We also talked about how his experience changed when he moved to NYC as a teenager and met other black punks and punks of color. We talk about the importance of embracing the “do it yourself” spirit of punk and moving from being a consumer to a creator. James’ determination to create a world for himself when he doesn’t fit in is the kind of spirit I love about punk and it comes through in his creative projects and as well as to his approach to parenting. Talking with James is to get excited about punk, and punk values, again and to see how those values can continue to inform your work, even as you move beyond and through punk. This episode also includes my thoughts on the Bikini Kill reunion show I recently attended in New York City. I reflect on how for me the most important elements punk contributed to my life are community, relationships with friends, and the importance of DIY and social justice-oriented values. The Album: Minor Threat: Minor Threat (1984) In 2003, James Spooner released Afropunk, a personal love letter/manifesto dedicated to people like him: punk fans of a different shade whose acceptance in the scene was often hard-fought and tenuous. That became a movement, with annual afropunk festivals becoming entities unto themselves, across the world. Spooner is now a tattoo artist and graphic novelist, living in Los Angeles. For our episode, Spooner joined us to talk about Minor Threat's self-titled compilation of their early singles, one through which he discovered the ethos of straight-edge (no drugs, drinking, etc.) and a wider world of possibilities within punk rock. Minor Threat, the short-lived but heavily-influential group out of Washington D.C., fronted by Ian MacKaye is legendary and this compilation was one of the first ways in which listeners could discover the group, their sound and their philosophy.  During our episode, we discussed how what about straight-edge appealed to him, the racial politics of punk and how a kid from the high desert of California came across this music and culture to begin with. Händel checkade ut 1759, Hendrix flyttade in 1968.Idag är huset ett museum med namnet Händel and Hendrix in London.

How Maxeler Technologies will custom design hardware to meet the specifications of a customers' algorithm His take on the recent criticisms regarding potential abuses of those networks raised by Michael Lewis and other authors? What he thinks of the introduction of artificial delays in HFT networks in an attempt to stifle abuses? If he thinks we are seeing growing concerns over a lack of synchronization in the financial markets, is this a concern for Maxeler as well? What new products or developments can we expect from Maxeler in the coming months? Hot Topics in Tech: Clients are fleeing Barclays “dark pool” in the wake of a US lawsuit alleging the bank misled them about high frequency activity in its private trading venue. Is there too much noise in social media and financial analytics? T+2 may lead to more failed trades. The Inbox: Listener questions and comments Question from Athlas: Seems like the front of the focus on HFT gaming in on the equity markets. I know you have discussed the penetration, or lack thereof, of this type of gaming into derivatives on earlier podcasts. My question is, why do you think this sort of gaming has not penetrated significantly into options and futures? Does the complexity of these instruments vs single price instruments, like stocks, make them less susceptible to latency issues and flickering quotes? Or is there something else at work here? Question from Rance Barber: I am a long-time listener to all of the Options Insider Radio shows and often hear Mark quote trading volume statistics. Have you identified any aggregate, reliable source for stock market trading volume data? I am looking for the data by month (2003-present) and it needs to include both traditional public exchanges as well as dark pool trading volume information. Any advice you can provide as to where I could find this data would be much appreciated. Thanks, Rance. Question from Guled - Hi! Which options software has the capability to automate the unusual options volume? E.g. with filters such as, on bid/ask, above/below open interest. Have found two professional grade LiveVol and Trade Alert, but do not know if they automate the process? Would be grateful for any help, many thanks in advance Thanks, Guled.
