How many women in this week's Rated or Dated? ZERO WOMEN. Must be a Mickey pick, eh? Correct. But what a pick: 2004's rockumentary classic/accidental comedy, Metallica: Some Kind of Monster from filmmakers Joe Berlinger and the late Bruce Sinofsky. And man, oh emotionally stunted man, does it raise a lot of questions about the human condition. And other questions, too. Such as, which Metallica did Jen fancy? And, how many times has Hannah accidentally seen them live? And, is that Mark Kermode? And also, can a human survive a pancreas explosion? A bonus treat for any Metallica fans listening: Mick's put some song title Easter eggs in there for you. Happy hunting! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Another Why We Love This Band episode? You know Nick and Mike wouldn't put something like this together for no reason. No, today, July 8th is the 20th anniversary of Metallica's documentary Some Kind Of Monster. And since they're talking about the biggest metal band of all time, they figured why not talk about their back catalog, the subject of this notorious documentary St. Anger, and what happened afterwards. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/renegadepopculture/support

This week we discuss Metallica's rockumentary, Some Kind of Monster. Filmed during the production of 2003's St. Anger, the documentary explores the bands trials through recording a fraught process. Alcholism, ego, therapy, opportunists, death, reconciliation, new people in, old people out, and more. While we aren't the biggest Metallica fans or metalheads, this is an interesting view into the creative process -- the human element of band dynamics. We give our take as we relate to the marriage that is a band.
Pop Screen finishes 2023 with a movie that could not be less stock to our ears - Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky's Metallica: Some Kind of Monster. Granted unprecedented levels of access to the world's biggest heavy metal band, the directors of the Paradise Lost trilogy made a raw documentary about a band somehow staying together and making an album despite unprecedented personal turmoil. The punchline: the album they make is St. Anger, perhaps the most reviled album in their back catalogue (or at least the most reviled one that doesn't feature Lou Reed). Join Aidan and Graham for this exploration of the lifestyle and indeed deathstyle of the metal legends, including diversions to talk about Lars Ulrich's feud with Napster, which type of dad James Hetfield is and the vexed question of whether Metallica are actually good. We also discuss the band's history and former members, their decision to hire a group therapist to get them back together and, of course, that infernal snare drum sound. Tom, Evan & Marcus go one fucking hour on Joe Berlinger & Bruce Sinofsky's intimate rockumentary METALLICA: SOME KIND OF MONSTER (2004), which chronicles the lowest point in the career of heavy metal juggernaut Metallica as they endure group therapy sessions, massive infighting and major creative constipation.
Our first episode on music docs. If you know the name Mahalia Jackson or if you don't, this episode is for you. If you want to be a fly on the wall for Metallica's group therapy sessions, this episode is for you. Join us as we cover this year's Academy Award for Best Documentary, Summer of Soul, a work by Questlove on the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival. We also review the film Metallica: Some Kind of Monster, following the band's dysfunction as they record their 2003 album St. Anger. We also discuss: Bill's workout routines, Stevie Wonder on the drum kit, and the music doc genre itself.
For Season 2 we'll be talking about band documentaries. We kick off the series by looking at 2004's "Metallica: Some Kind of Monster", which chronicles the band during the recording of their 2003 album, St. Anger. Episode art by Jess.
--- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/cinemaxunga/support
A pak to přepsali. A pak znova. A pak si řekli dost a nějak to splácali dohromady. Ale pozor - spoiler alert! Pokud jste některé z těchto filmů neviděli, dost možná prozradíme část zápletky. A neuvěříte, jak depresivní filmy si vybírá Zuzka. No a bavíme se taky o současném dění - probereme boje na Ukrajině, volby děkana fakulty na VŠE, obvinění vrcholných slovenských politiků ze zločineckého spolčení, falešného přítele Leoše Mareše a naši nedávnou cestu do Londýna. (Ale Londýn si necháme na samostatný podcast.)No a pokud jste si nedělali poznámky, taky jsou naše top pětky: Zuzčina Top 5: Kmotr Přelet nad kukaččím hnízdem Pelíšky Vzhůru do oblak (Up) Dej mi svelte jméno (Call Me By Your Name) Honzova Top 5: Jednotka příliš rychlého nasazení (Hot Fuzz) Vetřelec Vrchní prchni LA přísně tajné (LA Confidential) Hříšné noci (Boogie Nights) Plus tu máme filmy, které zbyly Honzovi: Lost in Translation, Some Like it Hot, Metallica: Some Kind of Monster, Rocky IV, Bílá stuha, a Zuzčiny tři depky: Lost Daughter, Moonlight, Manchester by the Sea.
In Conversations with a Killer: The John Wayne Gacy Tapes award winning filmmaker Joe Berlinger pulls back the curtain on the notorious serial killer John Wayne Gacy, the one-time aspiring politician, beloved local contractor, and part-time clown-for-hire who murdered 33 young men between 1972 and 1976. The majority of his victims were found buried under his house, in the quiet northwest suburbs of Chicago. Fifty years later, DNA scientists are still trying to identify all of his victims, but thanks to 60 hours of unearthed audio between Gacy and his defense team, we have fresh perspective on the narcissistic mindset of the murderer and a deeper understanding of how he operated for so long with impunity. The second installment in an ongoing series from filmmaker Joe Berlinger (Conversations With a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes), this three-part documentary also features new interviews with key participants – some of whom have never talked before, including gut-wrenching testimony from one of Gacy's survivors – all in search of answers to a crucial question: How was a public figure like Gacy able to get away with murder for so long? Director Joe Berlinger (Brother's Keeper, Crude, Metallica: Some Kind of Monster) joins us to talk about what draws him to the backstories involving people like Bundy and Gacy, and the personal impact exploring them has on his own outlook on humanity. The Matt and Tubes bring camera crews in to find out if "Some Kind Of Monster" is Crucial. It's our final movie pick from Netflix, and we go out with a bang. The Matt chose this 2004 behind the curtain look at Metallica. The band struggles to work together to find a new sound and enough cohesion to carry on through a difficult period of flux for the group's key members. So get the name right on the equipment, ask your dad if he would "delete that" track and join us as we try to explain why "Some Kind Of Monster" is Crucial. 2bs

In this episode, hosts Alan Sanders and Walt Murray welcome actor Demond Wilson who starred in Sanford and Son as well as other shows and movies. As always, they start by going to the beginning. Demond was born in Valdosta, Georgia, but moved to Harlem, NY shortly thereafter. By age 4, he was starting to do voice work on the radio. He loved to perform, working his way to the Apollo Stage at age 12. He continued to work on his talents, while also staying involved in sports throughout high school. His country called him into service just before he turned 20. He joined the Army and served almost two years in Vietnam before getting wounded and returning home to the states. Upon his return, he dove head-long into theatre and getting small roles in films. Perhaps his biggest break was being cast opposite Redd Foxx in the hit television show, Sanford and Son. Playing the role of Lamont, son to Foxx's, Fred, the duo would go on to make television history. As Demond puts it, beyond opening doors for other black actors and shows, Sanford and Son was funny! He reminds everyone, without the humor, none of the other messages of the show would have lasted. He would continue to act, but as he got older, felt a calling to the ministry. He always knew God was calling him to serve and when the time was right, he made the move. In between, Demond Wilson has written a pair of books. The first deals with his views of where the world and society is going called, "The Millennium: A New Age Expose." The other deals with his memoirs from being on the set of Sanford and Son called, "Second Banana." Demond did write a children's book years ago, but now wants to update it and release it in the coming year. He also has a few other projects in the works, but is waiting for life to get a little closer to normal. After thanking Demond for his time, Alan and Walt decide to forego the movie review. Instead, they dive into odd news before jumping into the entertainment segment where the remind everyone what they have been watching, reading and listening to over the past week. WATCHING Walt recommends the docuseries, Bad Sports, on Netflix. He also loves, Only Murders in the Building on Hulu. Finally, as only Walt can say with a straight face, the "fantastic" movie, Tommy Boy, is now running on Netflix. Alan watched Dune (part 1) for a second time and loved it even more. He caught the documentary, The Show Must Go On: Queen + Adam Lambert and said it was a feel-good watch. He then watched, Metallica: Some Kind of Monster. Finally, on YouTube, he tries to never miss the reaction videos for Ashleigh Burton. READING Walt has ordered some books, but hasn't had time to read any. Alan claims he is trying to carve out time to finish reading, "Dune." LISTENING Walt likes to listen to, The Thrilling Adventure Hour podcast, The Kimmer Show podcast and Radio Labyrinth podcast. Alan continues to enjoy the Iron Maiden album, Senjetsu, and tries to never miss 60MW Podcast.

And introducing, in therapy, it's Metallica: Some Kind of Monster! For our 100th EPISODE we've decided to return to our roots in HARD ROCK, but instead of looking at it's decadent heights, examining it at it's most grinding, tedious, bureaucratic lows. We're talking about the fantastic 2004 documentary Metallica: Some Kind of Monster, following the heavy metal goliaths as they drift aimlessly, tensions high, missing a member, recording an album no one's interested in - including themselves - and most hilariously in FULL BAND therapy. And through it, finding one of the most fascinating and intimate portrayals of a rock band ever made. SONGS Metallica - Seek & Destroy Metallica - Frantic Metallica - St. Anger

We also talk about an underrated classic: 2004's "Metallica: Some Kind of Monster!" Also, Michael reveals a recurring dream he has about an extra season of medical dramedy "Scrubs." CORRECTION: I said Metallica played “Take On Me” in Holland. They played the song in Norwway, where A-Ha is actually from. My apologies!
Some weeks frankly suck more than others. This was one of those weeks as we lost one of film’s most promising figures of the past decade: Chadwick Boseman. This was a story no one was expecting or wanting to hear, yet one filled with more grace, dignity, and strength than King T’Challa possesses. Rest in Power, Mr. Boseman. Other topics this week include our thoughts on two new films: Bill & Ted Face the Music and HBO Max’s Class Action Park. Finally, we look back at our favorite films of 1987!Cold Open: Chadwick Boseman Forever - A remembrance of the man who brought Black Panther to life and made an indelible mark on film and culture in all too brief a period. (00:00)Opening Credits: This week on Live Breathe Film with Corey, Doug, JP, and Murph… (18:09)News: Topics include Christopher Nolan’s perplexing US release of Tenet, another delay for The King’s Man, and a reminder that The Boys (Season 2) drops this week! (18:52)What We Watched: Highlights from the past week include Metallica: Some Kind of Monster, The OA (Seasons 1-2), The Pirates of the Caribbean Trilogy, Killing Eve (Season 1), Bill & Ted Face the Music, and Class Action Park. (39:31)Feature Presentation: Gone But Not Forgotten - With Chadwick Boseman’s untimely passing we remember some other titans of film that left us far too soon including Heath Ledger, Paul Walker, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. (01:35:43)Yearly Film Series: Our 1987 film selections include The Monster Squad, Robocop, The Princess Bride, and Spaceballs. With the announcement of Metallica's S&M 2 finally making a home release, I decided it was time to revisit their documentary, Metallica: Some Kind of Monster. Master filmmaker Joe Berlinger takes us inside his Oscar-nominated documentary Metallica: Some Kind of Monster.
Oh, brother. It's a big one as the NO POPCORN team of Hanratty, Higgins and Howard re-convene to shine a light on the genuinely incredible BROS: AFTER THE SCREAMING STOPS. A documentary on par with Metallica: Some Kind of Monster and This Is Spinal Tap sees two brothers warring with each other and their own colossal, bruised egos as a race against time ticks down in the background. Truly jaw-dropping stuff. ACT ONE: What We've Been Watching including early Coen Brothers, recent arthouse fare and a ringing endorsement for the deeply compelling Sunderland 'Til I Die. ACT TWO [20:00]: The main event comes screaming into focus as Matt and Luke Goss take centre stage. Were/are Bros any good? Do you wind up rooting for them here? Have they been stitched up by the filmmakers? Can we possibly pick just one quote to highlight? And the most important question of all; Team Matt or Team Luke? Yeeeaahh Famiglia!! It's a celebration of the work of motivational speaker Tony Robbins through an inside look at his annual “Date With Destiny" seminar where thousands of people flock in hopes of changing their lives. Liz Nord sat down the day after the film’s premiere at SXSW 2016 to discuss this new turn, plus his approach to filmmaking in general and advice to other doc makers trying to sustain a career.
