Presenting in a confident manner, listening to podcasts at the gym, and the idea of a Steely Dan play. Ruben Zarate (Dante Elephante) "Santa Barbara-based Ruben Zarate created the musical persona known as Dante Elephante in 2013. Shortly thereafter Lollipop Records released his first two LPs, German Aquatics and Anglo-Saxon Summer, both produced by Jonathan Rado (Foxygen), which saw praise from Consequence of Sound, Funny or Die, and Brooklyn Vegan. In the summer of 2018 Elephante then digitally released a full-length, Rare Attractions, leading to appearances at SXSW, Treefort Festival, as well as tours supporting The Orwells, Summer Salt, and Real Estate. Two records and a headlining tour under his belt, Dante Elephante now offers his most accomplished work to date: Mid-Century Modern Romance, produced by Paul Cherry, features eight soulful, disco-kissed tracks, seemingly right out of 1979." Somewhere in the late 00's, drummer Chris Enriquez felt the familiar and invetible societal pull of many artists to finally "get a real job" after over a decade with his bands On The Might Of Princes, Long Island hardcore/emo heros, and Gracer after Princes disbanded. He left it behind and began working as a brand rep for PBR at a time when that brand was making a major push to become indie-rocks beer of choice, which largely came to pass. But much was missing from his life at this time and he held that tide back with alcohol and cocaine until it became untenable at a certain point. It was near the time he joined with the band Spotlights in 2017 that he came out of his self-imposed "retirement" and reentered the rock world with a force. But he took what he learned from his time as a brand rep with PBR and has put it to great use as a Brand Partnership Director with Brooklyn Vegan, Alternative Press, The Hard Times and Revolver Magazines, respectively. As he restarted this life his rock life also got back in to top gear he's now drumming with not only Spotlights, but also Julie Christmas and Orange 9MM, not to mention his pandemic solo project called Light Tower. In the last couple of years there's been much excitement around On The Might Of Princes, and they had great success with a re-release of their final album, in addition to a sold out live performance on Long Island earlier this month.

For today's episode, I'm joined by Ashrita Kumar from Pinkshift to discuss their wild career trajectory over the past four years, from studying medicine at Johns Hopkins University to touring all over the country opening for acts like Mannequin Pussy, PUP, and L.S. Dunes. Other topics of discussion include our shared obsession with No Doubt, finding solace in writing as a daily practice, and the politics of visibility in the punk scene. ✨ MORE ABOUT PINKSHIFT ✨ Pinkshift is a post-hardcore trio from Maryland whose 2020 debut single, "i'm gonna tell my therapist on you" propelled them into pop punk infamy in 2020. Following the release of their debut album Love Me Forever in 2022, Pinkshift was deemed one of the buzziest pop-punk bands of the past 10 years in magazines like Kerrang!, Brooklyn Vegan, and Consequence. ✨ KEEP UP TO DATE WITH PINKSHIFT ✨ Web: https://www.pinkshiftmd.com/ Instagram: instagram.com/pinkshiftmd/ TikTok: tiktok.com/@pinkshiftmd Twitter: twitter.com/pinkshiftmd ✨ CONNECT WITH IZZY ✨ YouTube: youtube.com/channel/UCv6SBgiYCpYbx9BOYNefkIg Website: agrrrlstwosoundcents.com Instagram: instagram.com/agrrrlstwosoundcents/ Twitter: twitter.com/grrrlsoundcents
Matt Pond PA - "Imagining Everything" from the 2024 album Call and Response on 131 Records Today's Song of the Day marks a homecoming for singer/songwriter Matt Pond who launched his career in 1998 as matt pond PA, but tried to ditch the name the past few years, releasing an album under the moniker The Natural Lines in 2022. But now, he's re-embraced his original band name with the release of this new single. "Our album as The Natural Lines was one of my favorite experiences in making music,” Matt told Brooklyn Vegan last year. “We thoughtfully built songs and a band that represented the inner world of the post-pandemic return to reality. But as it stands now, I've said everything I can in that incarnation. I gave myself a strange band name back in Philly and it's been impossible to shake. As much as I love to run, there's no running from who I am.” “In the song and video for ‘Imagining Everything,'” he adds, “I can hear the worst thoughts about myself — about all of us. Nevertheless, I want to find a way back to loving this world.” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Chris and Xuan join the pod to discuss artistic serendipity, co-writing, unexpected choices, and how recording choices inform genre. Veronicavon, the brainchild of songwriters Chris Hackman (Human Barbie) and Xuan Nguyen (Xuan), emerged in 2020 with a (secret) mission to explore uncharted horizons in lo-fi pop. Their universe of grainy synths, cassette-drenched drums, and warbling guitars, complemented by Nguyen's enchanting vocals, creates a wistful, playful, and instantly addictive dreamscape. Flood Magazine dubbed them "casually devastating," and their hypnotic bedroom aesthetic quickly garnered a passionate audience, with over 500k streams on Spotify in their first year. They've been featured on editorial playlists like ‘Fresh Finds', ‘Borderless', and ‘Fuzzy'. Keep a close eye on this duo, as they follow in the footsteps of alt-pop icons Men I Trust, Alvvays, and Japanese Breakfast. Human Barbie, an analog fantasy formed in 2018 by songwriter Christopher Leopold, weaves wistful pop, shoegaze, and psychedelia into a melancholy glowscape. Their debut album ‘Get a Life' (Poor Man Records, 2020) explores personal heartbreak through psychedelic pop, meticulously recorded on vintage equipment. ‘Get a Life' received acclaim from fans and critics, featuring in Brooklyn Vegan, BIRP!, Indie Shuffle, KCRW, Buzzbands.la, and Spotify playlists like Undercurrents, IRL ANGEL, and Fresh Finds. The album was a top seller on Bandcamp, with songs used in commercials, including a Facebook radio ad and DISCO's 2022 SXSW mixtape. Inspired by its success, Leopold crafted the patient and expansive EP ‘no worries' in a Baltimore warehouse, channeling 90's-era shoegaze nostalgia. One of 2022's best albums according to NPR, Rolling Stone and Brooklyn Vegan, this debut slab of post-punk-inflected psych-indie went to number one in the UK charts and won fans across the world from Edgar Wright to Elton John. Skewering soft bois and bashing boring parties, this Isle of Wight duo followed up on the viral success of Chaise Longue with the masturbatory fantasies of Wet Dream and the dry hedonism of Angelica - “good times all the time” indeed. This week Christopher and Liam listened to it and now they're going to talk about it. Featuring hot takes and cool digressions on everything from the exact size of the Isle of Wight, Urban Outfitters and indie sleaze. In Episode 26 of Cult and Culture, Justin and Luke catch up with two members of short-lived 90s hardcore band End of the Line, Cory Linstrum (John Henry West) and Matt Anderson (Gravity Records, Heroin). They talk about coming up DIY, seeing Born Against play in their own garage, working with Ebullition to release their only album (now being reissued by Three One G), and the second (third? fourth?) wave of hardcore that the 90s brought with it. They also talk about the violence happening in San Diego at that time, the magic of the legendary venue Che Cafe and the scene it fostered, and the way that music helps keep people connected over decades in ways that nothing else can. They also dive deeper into Gravity Records, and some of the memorable releases including Man is the Bastard, Earthless, and Antioch Arrow. The concept of Cult and Culture began as a short segment created by Justin Pearson, an internationally known musician, record label owner (Three One G Records), author, and actor. He is perhaps best known as bassist for bands such as Dead Cross, The Locust, and Some Girls as well as vocalist for Deaf Club, Swing Kids, and Planet B. Having traveled the world touring in hardcore and punk bands since age 15, Justin has come to know and work with a broad spectrum of captivating personalities and brilliant minds, many of which are key figures in the realm of popular culture and cult followings alike-- from being on the soundtrack to John Waters' Cecil B. Demented, to acting in an Asia Argento's Incompresa, to playing in Dead Cross with Mike Patton and Dave Lombardo. Cult and Culture arose as an opportunity to document bits and pieces of the DIY-driven, subversive world of art Pearson identifies with- one that many are not aware of or perhaps have misconceptions about. Eventually, Pearson joined up with producer and bandmate Luke Henshaw (Sonido De La Frontera, Planet B, Satanic Planet, First Power Crew) to build the idea into a proper podcast, now recorded at his own PengOne Studios in San Diego. Henshaw has collaborated with hip hop legends such as Invisible Skratch Piklz' D-Styles and Q-Bert, Kool Keith, in addition to being immersed in the world of Cumbia alongside Sonido De La Frontera bandmate Karlos Paez (B Side Players). He also recently scored the music for upcoming documentary Sk8face, which tells the history of skateboard graphics. In this way, both Justin and Luke are influenced by a diverse array of subcultures that all have connected roots. John Waters was one of the first people interviewed for the podcast- an icon of both cult and culture. Since then, guests have included a broad scope of musicians, producers, authors, and anyone passionate about what they do-- anyone from Grammy-winning musician Juan Alderete (Mars Volta, Racer X, creator of Pedals And Effects) to actor Michael Malarkey (Vampire Diaries, Project Bluebook), from San Diego Black Panther Party members to longtime partners Nicola and Adam in electro-punk band ADULT. or The Satanic Temple cofounder Lucien Greaves (who would go on to form Satanic Planet with Luke and Justin as a direct result of their podcast conversation). The focus is not intended to be solely on people in any one realm, and because guests are friends and family, the conversations are frank, informal yet well-informed, and genuine. Pearson and Henshaw seek to achieve a casual openness, blurring lines between traditional guest and host. Cult and Culture is available on iTunes and SoundCloud and new episodes will be premiering on Brooklyn Vegan. You can find the latest episode premiere here. Links to the previous podcasts are below. Creative outputs, Putting music together through trial and error, and a necessary departure. Seth Applebaum (Ghost Funk Orchestra) “Ghost Funk Orchestra is the brainchild of composer/multi-instrumentalist Seth Applebaum. What started as a one-man recording project has now evolved into a 10-piece powerhouse live band. It's a sonic kaleidoscope that defies genre specification, but draws heavy influence from the worlds of soul, psych rock, salsa, and beyond. Their unique blend of genres has attracted praise from the likes of Bandcamp, KUTX, Brooklyn Vegan, Earmilk, and more. Local NY blog Post-Trash described their sound as a ‘psych odyssey of traditional sounds delivered in a non-traditional fashion.' Bandcamp's Editorial Director J. Edward Keyes praised the band's ability to ‘leave no funk-adjacent genre unexplored.' Now, coming off of their highly regarded 2019 release ‘A Song For Paul,' GFO is hard at work preparing their follow-up LP, to be released in fall 2020 on Karma Chief.” Excerpt from https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections/ghost-funk-orchestra Ghost Funk Orchestra: Bandcamp: https://ghostfunkorchestra.bandcamp.com Instagram: @ghostfunkorchestra Website: https://www.ghostfunkorchestra.com Merch: https://ghostfunkorchestra.bandcamp.com/merch Records: https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections/ghost-funk-orchestra The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSn17dSz8kST_j_EH00O4MQ/videos
In this season finale I spoke to the legend Fred Pessaro about all things music and culture. Pessaro is one of those guys thats always keeping mutliple fires burning all at once. A lover of music and someone that is heavly influenced by culture, he is considered to be one of the most "influential people in NYC" and has editorial expience for prestigious outlets such as Vice, Brooklyn Vegan, New York Times, Revolver, just to name a few. It was great speaking as well as meeting Fred as we spoke about his youth growing up in DC's hardcore scene, going for it when it comes to shooting your shot, bringing rock n' roll's most legendary publication back to life, Creem Magazine and so much more. Enjoy!
We had the pleasure of interviewing Brooke Annibale over Zoom video.Indie singer/songwriter Brooke Annibale released new album Better By Now through Nettwerk Music Group. A fearless new collection of songs, Brooke has both emboldened her sound on Better By Now as well as entered a new phase of life after making significant strides in her mental-health journey and saying “I do” to her wife. “I wrote this song in early January 2021,” stated Brooke. “We had literally just put the christmas tree out on the curb, and I felt this terrible sentimental feeling for it. This was also the same week as the Capitol attack. We had pushed through 2020, looking at 2021 as some kind of savior, but once it arrived nothing really changed. There was still the same intensely hostile political discourse and the pandemic continued raging on. It felt like things were getting worse somehow, when I hoped for it to be better by now. Reflecting on that time, it taught me that expecting a perfect external outcome will not lead to feeling better. I've got to do the internal work to have any kind of peace with the roller coaster of life.” Produced by Christian “Leggy” Langdon (Joseph, Amos Lee) and Matthew E White (Natalie Prass, Dan Croll), Better By Now features 10 blossoming indie-pop tracks that Brooke describes as a “spectrum of emotions.” In her trademark layered approach, the Pittsburgh-born, Rhode Island-based artist reflects on love, anxiety, depression, and how two seemingly opposing forces can exist at once. “The album is basically half about falling in love and half about mental health.” Earlier this summer, Brooke teased a couple songs from her new album, including the “immediately catchy” (FLOOD) lead single “What If You” and the “soaring, ethereal pop song” (Brooklyn Vegan) “5 AM” accompanied by the Genéa Gaudet-directed video. In celebration of Pride Month, Brooke also shared an inspiring op-ed via Atwood Magazine on representation, equality, authentic connection, and her journey to self-acceptance. Brooke's expressive and beautifully thoughtful songwriting creates a dreamy and enticing sonic landscape. We want to hear from you! How goes there, DTD-ers? This is a good week. For one, we are NOT discussing an episode of Pistol. Second, and more importantly, we have the opportunity to discuss Kevin Egan's WHAT AWAITS US: A BEYIND STORY, which is - pleasant surprise - NOT about the vegetarian meat substitute, and is instead about his legendary hardcore band, BEYOND. The film is more than that, too, although we're not gonna tell you what that "more" is; the only way you're gonna find out is to listen to the episode (and, of course, watch Egan's film). And while we're on the topic of telling you about things that we aren't telling you about because we want you to listen to the episode, let us also not tell you to keep listening AFTER the outro to hear additional, secret content. That's right, we're not saying anything! You're gonna have to listen for yourself to discover that we talk (for too long!) about a recent, and kind of silly, Brooklyn Vegan article. So you should just DO THE WORK! NOW! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
We had the pleasure of interviewing LIMBS over Zoom video.U.S. post-hardcore rising stars LIMBS have released their lyrically intimate and sonically pummeling new EP Coma Year on UNFD. The band has shared the video for "Blood and Heel.".The video is full of fire, pit-stirring breakdowns, riffy, post-hardcore urgency, and supremely catchy choruses that invite finger-pointing and singing along. The subject matter is something the entire world can relate to. It encapsulates the emotions that rose to the surface due to the restrictions necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic, and how the lockdowns forced people to take long, hard looks at themselves."This song is my quarantine anthem," exclaims singer Austin McAuley. "Simply put, it's a vivid recollection of the mental and physical toll the pandemic has taken on myself and those around me. The song describes the often unhealthy coping mechanisms I employed to deal with the stress and uncertainty I faced in my personal life, as well as my role as an artist while the world was in a volatile state.”He finishes, "At the end of it all, I felt like the only person who could help me was myself. I didn't want to rely on anyone else to solve any issues I may have due to the stresses of being in unprecedented times from a pandemic."McAuley is proud of Coma Year as a whole, calling the EP "our most heartfelt and honest release to date." It's certainly an EP for the people and meant to forge a supportive, therapeutic connection with the listener. He continues, "Every track paints a picture of my greatest fears coming to fruition from an anxiety filled perspective. Creating these songs was extremely cathartic, serving as a form of therapy to me while I navigated through dark days. Themes of loss, grief, uncertainty, and instability flow through this release but therein also lies a sense of optimism; hinting at the healing process initiated by bringing all of my greatest fears to the forefront."LIMBS, who have enjoyed editorial praise and support from the likes of Brooklyn Vegan, Revolver, Wall of Sound, Metal Injection, and more on previous releases, including the 2020 EP Only The Lonely Know, which now boasts over 2 million streams. We want to hear from you! To celebrate 50 episodes of more or less being on time, we revisit a Brooklyn Vegan article from early 2022 highlighting 10 hardcore bands they considered viable as the scene's next mainstream big timers. Indie artist OSLO is thrilled to announce their debut album, Great Places, set to be released on May 20th via their label Christmas Records. Self-produced and mixed by OSLO and mastered by Paul Leavitt (The Dangerous Summer, The Used, Turnstile), Great Places is an album born in isolation. The first single “Loma Prieta” is premiering now, exclusively on Brooklyn Vegan. To pre-save Great Places, please visit: smarturl.it/50sxxi. Speaking on the new album, OSLO shares, “Great Places was written and recorded during a time of great anxiety, doubt and confusion for myself and the world in general. It's about confronting the things we can't control and clutching to the belief that there are better times ahead, especially when it doesn't feel that way.” He continues: “'Loma Prieta' is about feeling like a disaster, even when you try to do the right thing and be the right person for everyone in your life. The video was filmed by Eric Elkin in the Palmer Square neighborhood of Chicago OSLO is the brainchild of musician/songwriter/producer TJ Horansky. After nearly a decade of touring, 2020 forced the Chicago-based songwriter to hit the brakes and take a good look inward. OSLO is both a creative outlet and experiment in self-sufficiency. Learning how to produce, engineer and mix independently was a byproduct of the Covid-19 quarantine. Amidst the ongoing crush of anti-Asian violence in America, Producer James turns to a peresonal source of restoration: ska music (yes, that ska music). When he was a teenager, the do-it-yourself ska scene — and an indie record label called Asian Man — taught him to take racism seriously, embrace the road less traveled, and never wait for anyone else's approval to be himself. But as James starts connecting with all of the Asian American ska fans he's met over the past few years, he also starts to question how much his own memories are wrapped in a black-and-white-checkered blanket of nostalgia. Eventually, these connections all lead to Mike Park, Korean American founder and still-only-employee of Asian Man Records — and Jer Hunter, a younger Black and queer ska musician who's carrying the torch for ska music as a home for anti-racist activism. And the more these conversations peel away the layers of nostalgia surrounding ska, the more James believes that this oft-misunderstood subculture has something real to offer in a world that can feel like it's crumbling beneath our feet. Everyone at 2021's Supernova International Ska Festival was talking about Rude Girl Revue, an all-star, all-women, 16-piece ska band, comprised of members of many bands (The Scotch Bonnets, Catbite, Half Past Two, Stop The Presses, The Pandemics, The Skluttz, and more). Today we talk to one of the group's founder's Jenny Whiskey, who's also been a longtime member of Hub City Stompers, and has been more recently, playing with Rude Boy George. Jenny started playing ska in the 90s. She almost got to play in Catch 22, but her mom wouldn't let her. However, in the early 2000s, she joined Hub City Stompers and helped keep ska music alive during a time when the music was in decline. We talk about this unique period of time, as well as how she perceives the sudden interest in ska in the last few years from Brooklyn Vegan and other non-ska outlets. She also gives us the story of the viral song "Jesus is a Friend of Mine" and we all make a plea to Mephiskapheles to record a split with Sal Polichetti, who re-recorded the song with Rude Boy George. It seems like nearly every major ska record these days has been released by Bad Time Records. What's going on? Today on the 1st episode of the 2nd season of In Defense of Ska, we bring on the owner of Bad Time Records himself, Mike Sosinski. He explains it all! There's a lot to the story of Bad Time Records. It starts with Mike's band, Kill Lincoln, which started in Washington DC a little over a decade ago. Mike tells us how his scrappy ska-punk band started at a time when no one cared about the genre, to him starting his own record label—that quite a few people cared about! And we walk through the Bad Time Records catalog and see how Mike created steady growth and a revived interest in ska-punk. It didn't hurt that Brooklyn Vegan took an interest in the genre in 2020 and gave Bad Time a lot of much-deserved attention. So, listen as we discuss, at length, a whole bunch of great BTR bands: Catbite, We Are The Union, Bad Operation, Best of the World, Kill Lincoln, and others. Hopefully, you'll leave with a better understanding of how the ska-punk scene grew in the last couple of years. It's been a long road since “The Monroe Mansion” days. New York-based rock group The Velvicks are kicking off the new year in rising fashion. Frontman Vick Nader talks about his musical upbringings in his native country in Brazil, and how specific moments on picking up his first guitar paved the way for him as an artist. The journey's been a wild one, and Vick describes his everlasting love for the music, and how the pandemic was a time for him and his bandmates to dig deep. Their debut EP, titled “Run” was released during these times and since then, The Velvicks have caught the attention of many outlets across the world such as Brooklyn Vegan, Earmilk, and MXDWN. Enter 2022, and The Velvicks are back with one of the more contemporary sounds of garage rock and roll that one can ever witness. Almost as if we are seeing a rebirth of the 90s sounds. Vick talks about the writing processes that went behind the new singles “LA” and “Cha Cha Cha,” and how they can serve as a sneak peek into what's to come for their highly-anticipated debut album. Plenty of surprises in store for the year and Vick Nader could not be more ready for the spotlight. About 10 years ago Mannequin Pussy bubbled up from the percolating Philly rock scene. Formed by guitarist/singer Marisa “Missy” Dabice and drummer Athanasios Paul, their primary calling card was a stinging combination of snippy and sizzling ragers. The lineup was eventually filled out with Drew Adler (drums) and Colins “Bear” Regisford (bass). (Paul moved to lead guitar in 2013 and Kaleen Reading took over for drums in 2015. Ultimately, Paul left earlier this year after recording Perfect.) Over the course of three albums and a remarkable brand-new EP, the band's sound has expanded, evolved, and deepened with more engaging melodies, gallant songwriting, and stouter song structures. Through time, gigs, and reps, Mannequin Pussy progressed beyond the linear rage often dished by young punks. The brazen, brash, locomotive charm in Marisa's lyrics and the band's expansive sound has become fully complemented by a refined approach with smoother, swelling dynamics and sharper care of their craft. Touring in support of late 2019's Patience and the pandemic-produced 2021 EP Perfect (both released on Epitpah Records), Mannequin Pussy's Dabice and Regisford invited PG to Nashville's High Watt for a gear chat before their sold-out show during their first-ever headlining run. Just ahead of soundcheck, Missy gushed about her first P-90 guitar, while “Bear” admits that his Player Precision proves he should've always been a P dude. And they each detonate the boom with their own strategic stomp of stank. (Sadly, shortly after this Rundown was filmed, on October 23, Mannequin Pussy had their van, gear, and band merch stolen from outside their Akron, Ohio hotel room. Brooklyn Vegan (https://www.brooklynvegan.com/mannequin-pussy-launch-gofundme-after-gear-van-stolen-in-akron-oh/) chronicled the disaster with some MP Instagram posts and a link to their GoFundMe page (https://www.gofundme.com/f/4qg96). The podcast is the #1 Music Business podcast in America and has charted on six continents with listeners in 115+ countries. The result was a new initiative called #iVoted in which over 150 venues in 37 states let fans in on election night 2018, who showed a selfie from outside of their polling place. The movement pivoted in 2020 due to the pandemic and created the largest digital concert in history, which took place on election night 2020. Over 450 artists participated in #iVoted Festival 2020, all booked per the data of the top streaming artists in key swing states whose margins are often decided by the size of a concert venue. Artists including Billie Eilish, Trey Anastasio of Phish, Playboi Carti, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Maggie Rogers, Colin Meloy of The Decemberists, Living Colour, Young the Giant and countless more have participated in #iVoted Festival. The #iVoted team quickly followed up by creating #iVoted Festival Georgia for the 2021 special elections that determined control of the U.S. Senate. #iVoted is currently building #iVoted Festival 2022 for The United States' next national Election Day - November 8th, 2022. We had the pleasure of interviewing Naomi Cowan over Zoom video! Naomi Cowan, is no stranger to the world of music and entertainment as she is a child of reggae royalty. The youngest of seven siblings, she was born & raised in Kingston, Jamaica under the mentorship of her parents Tommy Cowan, OD (reggae music producer, songwriter & former road manager for Bob Marley) & Carlene Davis OD (international reggae vocalist). Touted as one of the Caribbean's top rising female artists, Cowan was recognized as the Breakthrough Reggae Artist of 2018 at the 2019 Jamaica Reggae Industry Awards. Her first release Naked was the first song Naomi wrote on guitar and now her signature hit Paradise Plum rocketed Naomi to reggae music fans across the world and propelled her to several international stages in music and media. Naomi has performed live in London, Sweden, Switzerland, Belgium, Trinidad, Miami, Toronto, New York, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands & across the island of Jamaica. Her live sets include performances of her original reggae/rocksteady releases such as The Way, Gold, You're Gonna Lose feat Mark Pelli (member of the billboard chart topping Reggae-Pop group Magic!), One True Love and Peace Of Mind. She now enters a new phase in her music career with the first single off her joint venture project with Major Lazer "StarGirl" (May 2021, 7thC Records). The first track includes the Rihanna esque upbeat feel good track "Energy" which was produced by Izybeats (Koffee's "Toast). "Energy" has already caught the ears of New York Times top music critic Jon Pareles calling it "an ingenious, multi-leveled mesh of syncopations and silences", along with NY Daily News, LA Weekly, Essence, The Root, Brooklyn Vegan and more all praising the track. The former Miss Teen Jamaica's passion for youth empowerment can be seen through her work with youth in both Toronto & Jamaica. She is a speaker and mentor for the We Inspire Girls to be Strong Women tour, Manifesto Jamaica and the We Transform Jamaica program. We want to hear from you! We had the pleasure of interviewing Erick the Architect over Zoom video! Erick launched his solo project debut in January with Future Proof, a 5-song EP written as he processed the catastrophic events of last year. Out of his anger, fear and frustration came the realization that we must better ourselves to face the inevitable challenges that lie ahead. Part free-wheeling music fest, part self-improvement workshop, Erick envisioned this festival to explore these ideas in a novel, experiential way, inviting the world to be better alongside him. Future Proof has been covered by Complex, Hypebeast, High Snobiety, the Fader, XXL, NPR Music, Brooklyn Vegan and beyond, and features Loyle Carner, Col3trane, FARR, Sophie Faith, Linden Jay and Pip Millett. Erick the Architect is a celebrated artist and a sought-after collaborator, having worked with over 50 different artists including Tech N9ne, Denzel Curry and Portugal. The Man. He is working on forthcoming projects with both longtime and new collaborative partners - Joey Bada$$ and James Blake respectively. As a founding member and primary producer of Flatbush Zombies, Erick has accomplished some incredible feats including 871 million streams across all platforms, Billboard 200 debuts and having played some of the world’s most prestigious festivals including Coachella and Lollapalooza. Well, it seems that we have some celebrating to do here at O3L headquarters. It's the big Episode 5-0, so we had to celebrate this milestone with something special. So how about Vanessa Briscoe Hay from the legendary post-punk band Pylon? This highly influential band was called "the greatest arty party band" and "eons ahead of their time" by Rolling Stone, "raw, minimalist, brainy and danceable" by Pitchfork, "pioneering, good-humoured and brilliant" by Uncut, and "cool as hell" by PopMatters. High praise indeed! Not only is Vanessa cool, but she was also very gracious, generous with her time, has an awesome Top 5 list, and great stories to share. It just so happens that Vanessa has something big to celebrate too, because the fantastic new Pylon CD box set is coming out on March 26th! This 4 CD set covers the band's output from 1979-1983. The vinyl version released last year received some very impressive accolades, including a five star review in the All Music Guide and: NEW YORK TIMES “BEST OF 2020 BOXED SETS, REISSUES, DELUXE EDITIONS” ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE’S “THE BEST BOX SETS OF 2020” NPR MUSIC “THE BEST REISSUES & BOX SETS OF 2020” UNCUT MAGAZINE’S “BEST REISSUES OF 2020” BROOKLYN VEGAN “#1 BEST REISSUES, BOX SETS, & COMPILATIONS OF 2020” PASTE MAGAZINE’S “THE 10 BEST VINYL REISSUES OF 2020” AQUARIUM DRUNKARDS “2020 YEAR IN REVIEW” ALLMUSIC’S “FAVORITE ARCHIVAL RELEASES OF 2020” ULTIMATE CLASSIC ROCK #3 “TOP 15 ARCHIVAL ROCK RELEASES OF 2020” POPMATTERS “20 BEST REISSUES OF 2020” GARDEN & GUN MAGAZINE’S “THE BEST SOUTHERN ALBUMS OF 2020” This was an incredible thrill for us. Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Frozen Soul over Zoom video! Blue light. No heat. A glacial wall of denser-than-dense sound.Dallas Texas’ Frozen Soul lives up to their name as the sound of death metal at its most cold and classic. Riff after slow, grinding riff, there’s no mistaking the themes of isolation and suffering that permeate the quintet’s massive sonic missives. From the first note of the Century Media debut, Crypt of Ice, it’s like the march of Game of Thrones’ Night King put to sound: nothing subtle about it at all.Frozen Soul’s brand of straightforward, in-your-face death metal is a gasp of fresh air in a genre that’s stretched the very limits of technicality. Fully formed in 2018, the quintet has rapidly made a name for itself and churned the underground with a sound that evokes the old school sound of bands like Obituary, Mortician and Bolt Thrower. That reverence for death metal’s roots was apparent from Frozen Soul’s initial four-song Encased In Ice demo (which includes a cover of Mortician’s “Witch’s Coven”) that was released in early 2019 on California’s cave dwelling, knuckle dragging, Maggot Stomp Records. Not that Frozen Soul’s journey has exactly been overnight. The band’s roots can be etched back to 2007 in Green’s time as drummer in Metallic Hardcore turned Death Metal band, End Times.Blame it on the power of the blunt-force riff and a love for death metal’s past, but in part, blame it on being a band from Texas, a state whose metal roots run deep. From Pantera to Power Trip, sheer heaviness runs in Frozen Soul’s home state’s musical bloodstream.A chance 2016 meeting with guitarist Michael Munday at a local comic book shop over a game of Magic: The Gathering laid the foundation for Frozen Soul. The two had an instant chemistry and shared love for the likes of games, music and well of course, Bolt Thrower, that became the primordial ooze from which Frozen Soul would eventually emerge. With End Times guitarist and Crypt of Ice producer/mixer Daniel Schmuck – who has also worked with the likes of Creeping Death and Power Trip – Frozen Soul came together quickly. Bassist, and Tattoo Artist Samantha Mobley, along with Drummer Brady Tripp would fill in the starting lineup and by early 2019, the band recorded their inaugural demo and played a near sold-out first show in March, opening a stacked bill topped by death metal contenders, Blood Incantation and Necrot. The band circulated through members which led to the addition of Green’s long time friend and Drummer Matt Dennard, together hit the road to the West Coast by the Summer. In October they followed the West Coast tour up a run through the Midwest with thrash crossover monsters, Plague Years. A steady diet of in between local gigs with the likes of Gatecreeper, Exhumed, Vader and Obituary, really got their name out there among the local Texas scene, but hitting the frozen roads of the east coastin January 2020 with Death Thrashers Steel Bearing Hand brought their icy reign full circle solidifying their spot nationally. With every show, the band became a more oppressive wall of sound, a snow-machine enhanced atmosphere. In truth, Frozen Soul had arrived and both fans and the metal press had given them the stamp of approval. Just a few months after its release, the band’s singular demo-turned-EP was already winning them high praise in many year-end critics’ polls. Brooklyn Vegan pegged Frozen Soul for one of the most anticipated metal albums of 2020 and Invisible Orange’s writer Rhys Williams gave Encased In Ice the #4 spot in his Top 10 records of 2019.In another surprise turn, the band received a call from Century Media and found themselves inking a worldwide deal with the label. With its line-up filled out by Steel Bearing Hand bassist, Chris Bonner playing second guitar, Frozen Soul entered the studio in early March 2020 to record its first full-length with former guitarist Daniel Schmuck handling production and mixing duties. While the shadow of the encroaching Covid-19 pandemic loomed over the recording, the band got focused and delivered. Crypt of Ice is nothing short of a breath of very fresh and very cold air on death metal’s fiery landscape. From re-recorded demo tracks including the frigid call-to-arms of “Encased In Ice” and the savage frost blister of Wraith of Death, to the brutal, pummeling and momentous guitar churn of Arctic Stranglehold, Frozen Soul have delivered a record that embraces the genre’s past whilst pushing death metal forward with frigid force. We want to hear from you! Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Shilpa Ray over Zoom video! Singer-songwriter Shilpa Ray drops evocative new single “Heteronormative Horseshit Blues.” As with this spring’s “Manic Pixie Dream Cunt” Shilpa teamed with fellow New Yorker, renowned filmmaker Amos Poe to make a video for the track. Shilpa shares, “Straight culture is in dire need of a reform/defund/abolishment discussion. I wrote this song from my experiences of being stuck in an abusive relationship during my mid to late 20s, only to come to the realization that the non abusive ones weren’t that much better in terms of power dynamics and conforming gender roles. This song was inspired by Billy Idol’s, ‘Eyes Without A Face’ sans awkward rap section. I wanted to create a sharp contrast between the nature of the lyrics said by a defeated character against a hazy overtly romantic soundscape. Kind of like the 80’s doing the 50’s.The video is another collaboration with director Amos Poe with Ebru Yildiz on camera. It feature two overblown heteronormative characters, Doris Daydream and Danny LeDouche, played and developed by me.” Watch Heteronormative Horseshit Blues here: “Manic Pixie Dream Cunt” was released to critical acclaim including landing on Brooklyn Vegan’s “Songs We Like This Month” list. In the UK Louder Than War said, “‘Manic Pixie Dream Cunt’ is an in your face smash and grab affair that leaves you a little dazed and disorientated. But as you stagger from the blow you just want to hit repeat." The single marked the first bit of music Shilpa has released since her 2017 album Door Girl. She is based in Brooklyn and her voice - singular in modern popular music because of its radiant imperfection - takes neither prisoners nor guff as it offers up continuous caustic commentary on the human condition. Hers are observations gleaned from endless nights watching people in their natural habitat. Shilpa began releasing music in 2006 and a few years later formed the band Shilpa Ray and Her Happy Hookers. The band caught the attention of music critics around the world and the band released 2 albums before Shilpa returned to releasing music under her own name.We want to hear from you! Ne w Episode Out Now Denmark's current hottest export SIAMESE have just dropped a video for new single 'Can't Force The Love'. The award-winning post-hardcore outfit blend heavy riffs with soaring melodic vocals in this hook-filled track. Check out the video here: https://youtu.be/qb1nwhkGNWU Listen to 'Can't Force The Love' here: https://siamesedk.lnk.to/cantforcethelove 'Can't Force The Love' is the follow up to 'Home' ft Drew York (Stray From The Path) which received an incredible response and amassed over 700,000 streams in eight weeks. Feedback for the track was extremely positive and placed the band firmly on the map, with support from the likes of Rock Sound, Radio 1, Kerrang! Radio and top placements on Spotify's influential 'Kickass Metal' and 'New Core' playlists. The video for 'Can't Force The Love' is number two of three the band filmed in an abandoned military base in Denmark, that was actually the set for Netflix series 'The Rain'. "We found it to be very 2020 apocalyptic, but also had to be creative and smart in trying to make an idea work during lockdowns, restrictions etc." explains frontman Mirza Radonjica. "Lyrically the song is dedicated to a person I had to let go last year. Not to diss her, or to point fingers, but to explain what an impossible idiot I am, and why she's better off without me to be honest." SIAMESE have moved their UK tour to July and August, see below for new dates. Line-Up: Mirza Radonjica - Vocals Andreas Kruger - Guitar Christian Lauritzen - Guitar, Violin Marc Nommesen - Bass Joakim Stilling - Drums SIAMESE online: https://www.facebook.com/siamesedk https://siamese.bandcamp.com/ My thoughts Force the love is a strong single packed with melody and a chorus with a natural hook, guitars sounds that really hit hard, Siamese have really delivered a great track, packed with influences from bands like apocalyptica and Nightwish I feel the guys have done an incredible job at mixing all these incredible sounds you have the heavy guitars and drums and yet the melodic electronic trance sounds. Go and give this a listen Moving on to our next single this week OKAY so something completely out of my comfort zone and genre I have never even thought I consider looking into DUB TRIO share a new single via New Damage Records titled 'Them Thing Deh Dub' featuring BENJI WEBBE of Skindred on vocals. Listen on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/o5GB9JFl5I8 Stream here: https://fanlink.to/DubTrio 'Them Thing Deh Dub' is a cover of 'Them Thing Deh' by legendary reggae artist Ini Zamoze. "We're putting this song out for the love of it. We knew we wanted to do a track that paid homage to our forefathers of reggae and dub, rhythm section greatness, Sly and Robbie. They have been an endless source of inspiration to us as a band from the beginning,” shares DUB TRIO's Stu Brooks. “So, as helicopters swarmed over Hollywood during BLM protests, my wife and I felt compelled to finally break quarantine. As we approached Hollywood and Vine to join in solidarity with the protesters, ‘Them Thing Deh' happened to be the soundtrack in my headphones. The lyric “got to keep your cool” really spoke to me as I could feel the tension in the air. That week, we quickly put the rhythm tracks together, recording from three different states, with the help of Roger Rivas on organ and keys and hit up our old friend, legend Benji Webbe. Benji is the ultimate genre-masher, soulfully clashing metal, reggae, punk, dub, dancehall... all the sh*t we love!” Among the band members' many production and recording projects, Stu Brooks had the honour to track the bass for Danny Elfman's first solo single in 36 years, 'Happy'. It is available now and can be found here: https://dannyelfman.ffm.to/happy DUB TRIO released their 5th full-length album The Shape of Dub to Come on New Damage Records in 2019, with praise from Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Consequence of Sound, Revolver, Noisey, Brooklyn Vegan, New Noise Magazine, Submerge Magazine, and more. An homage to titles such as Refused's The Shape of Punk to Come and Ornette Coleman's The Shape of Jazz to Come, The Shape of Dub to Come's groove hinges on slower stoner-inspired sludge riffing. The release was followed by touring across the United States and Europe, including direct support on the Incubus tour. The acclaimed LP was announced with 'World of Inconvenience [feat. King Buzzo]' at Rolling Stone, who called it, “Heavy, trippy… a crafty, atmospheric hybrid." 'Fought The Line [feat. Troy Sanders]' followed via Consequence of Sound, "The creepy, script-flipping video speaks to the song's heavy lyrical theme." With 'Forget My Name Dub [feat. Meshell Ndegeocello]', they usher dub into new territory like only they can. Purchase The Shape of Dub to Come here: http://smarturl.it/DubTrio Over nearly two decades together, Brooklyn's DUB TRIO - Stu Brooks [bass], DP Holmes [guitar], andJoe Tomino [drums] - not only delivered a string of albums that forever redefined the term “dub” under cover of metal, punk, alternative, and shoegaze, but also infused its musical prowess into the studio recordings and the shows of genre-bending icons ranging from Mike Patton to Lady Gaga. Dub Trio social links https://dubtrio.com/ https://www.facebook.com/dubtrio/ https://www.instagram.com/dubtrio/ My thoughts so Like I said at the start this is something that I'm not in my comfort zone and feel like a massive intruder but we give this a guy, personally I quite enjoyed this track its melodic and an easy listen, some lovely production on the track with different sounds and different effects within the track, if you're a fan of reggae then go and check this out Dub war sound like a lot of fun You can find this episode and previous episodes from Setting The Tone in the below links Spotfiy https://open.spotify.com/show/6Jj9SsrXxve44839dptihN… Apple https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/setting-the-tone/id1499390718 Google https://podcasts.google.com/?q=setting%20the%20tone podbean https://Settingthetone2.podbean.com Thank you to our sponsor @The Guitar Ninja Academy, the best place to become a guitar master. We had the pleasure of interviewing Terrell Hines over Zoom audio! Terrell Hines shares his thrillingly inventive and eclectic new project, Portal One: The Mixtape. Released via Capitol Records, Portal One: The Mixtape is the debut mixtape from the boldly original songwriter/vocalist/multi-instrumentalist/producer.LISTEN: https://terrellhines.lnk.to/POTMCo-produced by Hines, Portal One: The Mixtape features his powerful and politically charged recent single “Get Up (with Vince Staples)” — a collaboration with Vince Staples that’s earned acclaim from tastemakers like Rolling Stone, Brooklyn Vegan (who hailed it as “a dose of kinetic art-funk”) and The FADER (who praised the track’s “forceful, heart-racing peak”). Meanwhile, Rolling Stone noted that Staples’s verse on “Get Up (with Vince Staples)” “perfectly complements the still-relevant urgency Hines packed into the original.”Along with “Get Up (with Vince Staples),” Portal One: The Mixtape includes previously released singles like “Balance,” “Wu Dirt,” “St. Mark Rd.,” and “Promise.” Over the course of nine dynamic tracks, Hines delivers a genre-blurring sound informed by artists as disparate as OutKast, Joy Division, and Four Tet, infusing each song with the kinetic energy of live guitar, drums, bass, keys, and strings. To that end, Portal One: The Mixtape also showcases the polymathic musicality honed in part through his studies at The Berklee College of Music (which Hines attended on a full-ride scholarship). True to his hyper-creative tendencies, Hines created a visual component for all nine tracks while in quarantine, shooting his own videos with the help of a green screen.A consummate artist’s artist, Hines recently appeared on the title track to Beck’s 2019 album Hyperspace. Also in 2019, Hines’s saw a major rise in his profile when his music was used in an Apple Keynote. Despite never having released an album or toured in the U.S., he’s now amassed more than two million streams. An even split of postmodern and post-apocalyptic, Hines’s music is the outcome of relentlessly pursuing his many obsessions. He's a renaissance man who spends his downtime devouring books on linguistics, synesthesia, or evolutionary psychology — or considering which metals one would want to gather following a catastrophe, then sampling those metals in the studio. "I'm trying to engineer the future," says Hines.Terrell on: Instagram / Facebook / TwitterWe want to hear from you! Bill and Brian are back once again to talk about a fun article, this time from Brooklyn Vegan, in which Andrew Sacher explores the phenomenon of classic pop punk bands ditching their youthful sound for a more "mature" expression of art. We have fun talking about some of the albums we've enjoyed like Green Day's Warning or Hellogoodbye's Would It Kill You and others we didn't know too much about prior to this like Panic at the Disco's Pretty Odd and The Early November's The Mother, the Mechanic, and the Path. Check out the original article . Also, note that there's a little noise coming through our digital connection. We tried to clean it up the best we could and hope it doesn't detract from the show!
After I get through about 20 minutes of catching up on new music that dropped in the last 2 weeks, we got some stuff to talk about. New projects OTW from LSP, Sadistik & City Morgue. On this episode of Spot Lyte On, Lawrence Peryer chats with Rishi Dhir. Formed in Montreal in 2009, Elephant Stone is the brainchild of vocalist, bassist, songwriter, and sitar player, Rishi Dhir. Elephant Stone have toured extensively throughout North America and Europe and are prominent members of the burgeoning psych rock scene. Dhir has recorded, performed, and toured with indie rock icons (Beck), legendary cult bands (The Brian Jonestown Massacre), and contemporary psych titans (The Black Angels and The Horrors).Released in 2009 on Dhir's own Elephants on Parade label, Elephant Stone's debut album, The Seven Seas, was nominated for the 2009 Polaris Music Prize, which honors the best full-length Canadian album. In 2013 Elephant Stone released their second full-length LP, Elephant Stone. The album received critical acclaim from NPR, Brooklyn Vegan, Consequence of Sound, and other important media outlets. It also contained Dhir's finest batch of songs yet, especially the singles “Heavy Moon” and “Love the Sinner, Hate the Sin,” as well as the raga-drenched meditation, “A Silent Moment.”A third album – The Three Poisons – followed in 2014. Elephant Stone's heaviest, grooviest, and most ambitious record to date, The Three Poisons yielded the band's two biggest hits: “Knock You from Yr Mountain” and “Child of Nature (Om Namah Shivaya).” And the darkly compelling and inventive “Three Poisons” showcased Dhir's lyrical exploration of Buddhist themes and The Tibetan Book of the Dead. The Three Poisons remix album – ES3PRMX – appeared in 2015 as a digital download. Anton Newcombe of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Tom Furse of The Horrors, Alex Maas of The Black Angels, Peter Holmström of The Dandy Warhols, and more contributed remixes. In 2016 Elephant Stone released their fourth album, Ship of Fools, via Elephants On Parade/Burger Records. We had the opportunity to interview The Frights!Every live show from The Frights is both high-energy and hyper-emotional, a free-for-all fueled by crowds of thousands screaming along to intensely honest lyrics about anxiety and angst, breakups and bad crushes, mental health and medication. Since 2015, the San Diego surf-punk band has set that surreal phenomenon in motion at over 300 shows across the U.S. and Europe, as well as at festivals like Lollapalooza, Shaky Knees, Ohana, Riot Fest and this year’s Coachella. On their new album Live at the Observatory, The Frights capture all the dizzy chaos of their live set, an experience that’s equal parts a wildly unsupervised kid’s birthday party and an off-the-rails group-therapy session. Recorded at the sold out kick off show of their Hypochondriac headline tour at The Observatory in Santa Ana on September 8, 2018, Live at the Observatory features 14 songs spanning the band’s complete catalog. After kicking off with the anthemic frenzy of “Kids” (a cut from their 2016 sophomore effort You Are Going To Hate This), the band delivers full-tilt fan favorites like “Cold” and “Crust Bucket,” then turns tender on acoustic-guitar-driven tracks like “Hold Me Down” and the painfully vulnerable “Alone,” both from their 2018 Epitaph Records debut, Hypochondriac. Throughout the entire set—whose encore includes the dreamy doo-wop of “Makeout Point,” a cut from The Frights’ debut EP Fur Sure—the love and solidarity from the crowd is palpable, their shared confession giving way to something way more fun and more powerful than ordinary catharsis. Inspired by attending a show at the aforementioned Observatory, Carnevale and Dotson formed The Frights soon after they graduated from high school. From there, they released two EPs and their self-titled full-length debut in 2013. With the addition of Marc Finn on drums, the band released You Are Going To Hate This in February 2016. Along with debuting on the CMJ Top 200, the album earned acclaim from outlets like Brooklyn Vegan (who praised its title track as a “super catchy blend of Weezer, SoCal pop punk, and Burger-y garage rock”). The band’s line-up was further solidified with the addition of Jordan Clark for their extensive touring in support of You Are Going To Hate This. The Frights signed to Epitaph in early 2018 and got to work on Hypochondriac. Like You Are Going To Hate This, the band’s third full-length was produced by Zac Carper of FIDLAR (who’s also produced albums for SWMRS and Dune Rats). But for Hypochondriac, Carnevale took a more deliberate and exacting approach to his songwriting, resulting in The Frights’ most nuanced work to date. After a sold out show at The Observatory North Park in their hometown of San Diego the same date as the release of the album, the band embarked on the Hypochondriac headline tour that is documented on this live album. https://thefrights.com/Mikey Carnevale (vocals/guitar) - Richard Dotson (bass) - Marc Finn (drums) - Jordan Clark (guitar) We want to hear from you! Acid Dad first appeared in the New York scene at the outset of 2015. After spending the year self-releasing demos recorded at their studio in upstate New York, the band garnered local praise from the likes of Oh My Rockness, Brooklyn Vegan, Consequence of Sound and Stereogum. After releasing their debut EP “Let’s Plan a Robbery” in February of 2016, followed by their first sold out show at Baby’s All Right, Acid Dad embarked upon a two month tour of the United States. Fresh off their first tour, which included numerous SXSW performances as well as appearances on Daytrotter, Audiotree and Jam in the Van, the band headed straight back to work in their upstate New York recording studio. While recording, Acid Dad continued to play one-offs alongside their contemporaries including Thee Oh Sees, Diarrhea Planet, Night Beats and White Reaper. At the outset of 2017 the band began writing, demoing and recording with the intention of creating their debut full length. Now part of the Greenway Records family, the album is slated for a Spring 2018 released followed by a world-wide tour. •••• The B-Side Podcast is produced by Charlie Hoxie, Kecia Cole, Ro Johnson and Sachar Mathias; recorded by Onel Mulet and Steve de Seve; and edited by Emily Boghossian and Khyriel Palmer. Fred Pessaro joined us to talk about his newly-launched site CLRVYNT. Fred was formerlly the editor at Noisey, Brooklyn Vegan and Invisible Oranges as well as being a prominent figure in putting on shows in the NYC underground metal and punk scene. Late in the episode, Justin Pearson of RETOX / DEAD CROSS joined us to liven things up a bit. Brought to you by Savage Gold Coffee #staygold
I sat down with writers Andrew Sacher and Ian Cohen separately to talk about covering emo for their publications. Both of them provided fantastic insight into why we're in this so-called "emo revival," how polarizing this genre can be for many and what if the emo bubble of the 2000s never happened?! On this episode of Turned Out A Punk, Damian gets to chat to Le Sera's Katy Goodman about going from watching New Brunswick basement hardcore shows, to playing at Coachella in the Vivian Girls. It's been a few weeks since the last podcast but I'm back on track. It's been a grind, spending way too much time on stuff that's not compelling, not to mention the war I've been waging against bedbugs. Fred Pessaro, the newly installed editor-in-chief of Invisible Oranges is back along with Sam Marble, photographer / Jersey Girl / Heavy Metal Enthusiast is also in the house for a spirited discussion of the recent acquisition of Invisible Oranges by Brooklyn Vegan, SXSW recollections, the ongoing saga of the Black Flag reunion and stories about street violence.
Fred Pessaro stopped by to chat about Brooklyn Vegan, promoting shows, secret identities, and our love of old soundtracks. We spoke about two films, "To Live and Die in L.A." and "Christiane F"; I said that both films are basically about drugs, but I stand corrected, "To Live and Die in L.A." is actually about counterfeiting!! Enjoy the podcast, and if you're so inclined, leave a comment on iTunes.
On this edition of the Metal Injection Livecast, we welcome a friend of ours, Rich Hall of 1000KNIVES. We started off the show discussing about a photo of Sean and Rich Hall on Brooklyn Vegan. Sid then shares a story about going to a party at his girlfriend's gay boss's house. Then, we get into a vicious cycle of conversations about man parts. This episode also features the return of Death or No Death which featured a surprise winner. We also read another excerpt from Dave Mustaine's autobiography about the time he was a drug dealer as a kid. Here is this week's playlist: Animals As Leaders – CAFO Neurosis – Fear and Sickness Pig Destroyer – Phantom Limb Dying Fetus – Pissing in the Mainstream

This is a the definitive episode of the Fall season! Fred has a history in underground music that is as massive in scope as it is varied in station. Having been published in Vice, worked the Toyota/Scion Rock Fest, presented the absolutely incredible NOLA documentary for NOISEY... phew, lets backpedal. You see, Fred started out booking shows in NYC, bringing his favorite bands to town. he parlayed that into a career in journalism that led him to becoming Senior Editor of Brooklyn Vegan for 6 years. He'd had a brief stint as Editor In Chief (as well as DJ/Host) for Invisible Oranges. On to Noisey, where he'd also served as Editor in Chief for almost 3 years. On and on to Editor At Large/Director of Marketing at Revolver. He had then struck out on his own, as the Owner and Operator of Jackpot Plus Artist Services... Deep breath... The long lost, terribly missed, and deeply regarded CREEM Magazine came calling, and Boy Howdy, who would say no?! Intro music "Martyrs" by Heart Out. Theme music by Gown. find Creem on IG @creemmag
