Interview by Kris PetersTwo decades into any career and you would be forgiven for starting to grow stale or formulaic. Be it an office job, labouring, or even in the music industry, the old saying familiarity breeds contempt holds firm. But try telling that to Scottish metal outfit Bleed From Within who, after 20 years in the music scene, have reached their peak - their Zenith, if you will. The Glasgow firebrands are one of the hardest working acts in metal: playing shows globally with everyone from Megadeth to Slipknot, all while writing and regularly releasing monstrous, exhilarating songs. The upward journey reaches new heights on their seventh album, Zenith, which contains the band's heaviest, catchiest and most intrepid music to date. The band's first two albums, Humanity (2009) and Empire (2010), made Bleed From Within cult figureheads in the deathcore scene, before Uprising (2013) broadened their palate with groove metal adrenaline and melodic death metal prowess. It also marked their major-label debut, catapulting them onto tours with heavy royalty. In 2018, the band returned with the ferocious Era. Then, follow-ups Fracture (2020) and Shrine (2022) proved their greatest triumphs to date, intertwining vocalist Scott Kennedy's snarls with Steven Jones' majestic singing. The millions of streams gathered by such singles as The End of All We Know, Into Nothing and Levitate proved Bleed had become the next big thing. Now, on Zenith – announced ahead of career-affirming tours with Slipknot, Trivium and Bullet for My Valentine – the quintet are primed to leap into superstardom.HEAVY spoke with frontman Scott Kennedy to go deeper into Zenith."It feels like we've been waiting so long to drop this album," he sighed. "So, I'm buzzing for it to finally get out. I think it's the best collection of songs we've ever done and I'm desperate for people to hear it."We ask Kennedy to talk us through what Bleed From Within were going for musically with Zenith."To be honest, with Bleed From Within there's never really any concepts or anything like that," he replied. "It's more just about - for me personally - the songs are always about what I'm going through at that point in my life. I always try to write from the heart and write songs that are really meaningful because I don't want to go on stage and sing a song that doesn't really mean anything to me. I don't just want to go on and sing any old shit to the crowd. With Bleeding From Within it's just always about writing the best collection of metal songs that we possibly can, and I truthfully believe that this is the best collection of metal songs we've ever written."In the full interview, Scott discussed Zenith further, expressing his excitement about what he considers their best work to date. He highlighted the opening track Violent Nature for its heavy and fast nature, and elaborated on the collaborative songwriting process among band members, emphasizing a natural evolution in their music.Scott also mentioned Bleed From Within's experimentation with various musical elements, including strings and guest vocalists, to achieve a distinctive sound. The discussion wrapped up with a mention of upcoming tour plans and festivals following the album's release.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

The Haka drama is back today, isn't it? Because Joe Marler has now backtracked completely on what he said and has apologised for it and specifically has apologised to New Zealand fans for, in his words, “my poorly articulated tweet earlier in the week, I meant no malice New Zealand”. What have you done? Are we honestly that sensitive about the haka that we can't handle it when a rugby prop - not known as the brains of the bunch -criticises the haka in a silly little social media post on X. Can we really not handle this? What did we do to him? What did we do? Did we bombard him on Twitter? Because I feel like that's what happened here and that's why he deleted his Twitter account for a while, isn't it? I think that we may have to get a little bit of a change going about how we perceive the All Blacks' haka. Yes, it is special to us and it quite clearly is very special to the All Blacks as well, but it's not special to everybody, is it? I mean, the rest of the world just has to put up with it, don't they? And so maybe, instead of being so aggro at them when they tell us that they don't really like it, especially the British and especially Steven Jones, we should understand that. They don't have to like it. They don'thave to put up with this, but they do. We should actually be grateful that the rugby world indulges us the way that they do. They let us do the Haka for a start and then they let us have all these rules about how other teams have to respond to the haka, how close they can get stuff like that. They try to be respectful. They face the challenge, they apologise profusely when a plane accidentally flies over the top at the wrong time, they don't have to do any of this stuff, and they definitely do not have to like the thing and we shouldn't be so sensitive about it. So,let's be honest about this, right. We do the Haka a lot nowadays because there are a lot of international tests nowadays and it is frankly very nice that the rest of the world lets us do it. So maybe a little less sensitivity, a little bit more gratitude. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dr. Steven Jones is the co-author of Acquiring Medical Language(McGraw Hill), a widely used textbook in medical schools for instruction in medical terminology and rooted directly in his education in Classical Greek and Latin. He makes a case for translating this terminology so that patients can understand it, but also so that the human and ethical aspects of medicine are brought out of the shadows of obscure technical language. Dr. Jones is the Teaching & Training Pastor at Kingsland Baptist Church, Katy, TX, a Greek instructor at Lanier Theological Library (which sponsors this podcast along with Wheaton College), and is currently teaching Greek, Latin, and Medical Terminology at Rice University. In his lecture to philosophers in Acts 17, Paul declares that God has so ordered human history that people “would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us” (NIV). The verb translated “reach out for” (ψηλαφάω) can be illuminated by the blinded Cyclops in Homer's Odyssey or by the biblical Isaac trying to identify which of his sons was talking to him. On this episode, Marc talks to Steven Jones, author of "Murder Ballads Old and New: A Dark and Bloody Record," published on November 12, 2023. It's a fascinating and in-depth look at songs throughout history that have dealt with death and tragedy, including folk songs that have been passed down through and transformed by generations, as well as more recent works that are just as affecting and impactful as tunes that are hundreds of years older. As Steven writes in his introduction, “This book is about unhappy music–songs of death and loss caused by sudden, often violent reversals of fortune, celebrated and scrutinized for what each reveals about the human condition, and the role creativity plays in processing trauma and grief.”We hope you enjoy Marc's conversation with Steven Jones!

This week, Steven Jones continues our series with the word 'Powerful'. God's power allows people to achieve God's purpose. To become a powerful person, we must stay connected to the source of power. There are three ways that powerful people say connected to God through; His word, prayer, and His people. Scripture References: John 15:5-6, Joshua 1:8, Psalm 1:1-4, 1 Corinthians 1:25, Psalm 119:30, 1 John 5: 14-15, Proverbs 7:3, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, Philippians 4:6-7, James 5:16, Matthew 22:37-40, Matthew 28:19-20, Matthew 18:20, Hebrews 10:24-25, Psalm 103:2-5
Matthew 16:21-27 Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised. Then Peter took Jesus aside and began to rebuke him, "God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you." He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do." Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life? For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father's glory, and then he will repay all according to his conduct."
