Perhaps best known for his novels Motherless Brooklyn (1999), The Fortress of Solitude (2003), and Chronic City (2009)—or, more recently, Brooklyn Crime Novel (2023)—the author, essayist, and cultural critic Jonathan Lethem could be considered the ultimate modern-day Brooklyn bard, even if today he lives in California, where he's a professor of English and creative writing at Pomona College. His most celebrated books take place in Brooklyn, or in the case of Chronic City, on Manhattan's Upper East Side, and across his genre-spanning works of fiction, his narratives capture a profound sense of the rich chaos and wonder to be found in an urban existence. Lethem is also the author of several essay collections, including the newly published Cellophane Bricks: A Life in Visual Culture (ZE Books), which compiles much of his art writing from over the years written in response to—and often in exchange for—artworks by friends, including Gregory Crewdson, Nan Goldin, and Raymond Pettibon. On the episode, Lethem discusses his passion for book dedications; the time he spent with James Brown and Bob Dylan, respectively, when profiling them for Rolling Stone in the mid-aughts; how his work is, in part, a way of dealing with and healing from his mother's death in 1978, at age 36; and why he views his writing as “fundamentally commemorative.”Special thanks to our Season 10 presenting sponsor, L'École, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes:Jonathan Lethem[5:35] Cellophane Bricks[5:35] High School of Music and Art[5:35] Motherless Brooklyn[5:35] The Fortress of Solitude[5:35] The Disappointment Artist[5:35] Maureen Linker[7:15] Carmen Fariña[8:26] Julia Jacquette[8:26] Rosalyn Drexler[9:08] The Great Gatsby[9:08] Brooklyn Crime Novel[10:59] Lynn Nottage[13:08] Bennington College[13:08] Bret Easton Ellis[13:08] Donna Tartt[23:41] The Collapsing Frontier[23:41] Italo Calvino[23:41] Cold War[23:41] Red Scare[23:41] J. En este capítulo os propongo que nos adentremos en la relación entre el cuarto y el noveno arte. Thurston Moore is one of the most famous names in rock. With Kim Gordon and Lee Ronaldo, he formed Sonic Youth, one of the definitive art rock bands... yes, ART rock. Sonic Youth album covers famously spotlighted artists, from Gerhard Richter's candle on the cover of 1988's Daydream Nation to Raymond Pettibon's cartoon couple on the cover of 1990's Goo to Mike Kelley's stuffed animal on the cover of 1992's Dirty to Marnie Weber's collage for 1998's A Thousand Leaves. Well, now Moore is back, putting out a new dreamy solo album titled Flow Critical Lucidity, and true to form, the cover is another literal work of art: a photo of a sculpture of what appears to be metal helmet, studded with tuning forks. This is a work called Samurai Walkman, by the artist Jamie Nares. Nares is a figure of major cachet herself. She only just had a film retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art here in New York in the summer. Back in 2020, her fantastic 2011 video Street was the first film to be projected on the exterior of the Metropolitan Museum of Art—Thurston Moore, in fact, did the soundtrack to that film. Nares and Moore have a fruitful history of collaboration together, having both come up in the chaotic, experimental No Wave scene of the 1970s, and this week they join Ben Davis on the podcast to discuss. We're also thrilled to announce the launch of Art Market Minute, our new micro-podcast, hosted by news editor Margaret Carrigan. It offers a weekly snapshot of essential art market news, expertly compiled by the Artnet PRO editorial team. You can find it wherever you get your podcasts every Monday.

On purism and art making, punk, surf culture, misheard song lyrics, art world disenchantment, what keeps him going as an artist, and Black Flag.
Arts writer and former professional surfer Jamie Brisick talks about: w hat it was like being on the pro surfing tour back in his late teens and early 20s, and how he developed his Plan B career initially as a surfing writer before moving into arts & culture writing; how he comes to art/the art world with a relatively fresh perspective, and has experienced some unsavoriness in the upper spheres in its being too much like high school in terms of popularity, etc.; what it means when, to quote the artist Paul Chan in this case, ‘Success is its own form of failure;' the varied and fascinating work of Francis Alÿs, whom Brisick tried to get an interview with but was essentially blown off, but whom he still highly respects and reveres as an artist; the artworks, storytelling, and other idiosyncrasies of quintessential surfing-art artist, Raymond Pettibon, whom Brisick has profiled extensively and become friends with; the surf-skate pioneer Craig Stecyk (also a mentor of Brisick's) and his crazy performance art stunts; and his relationship with the journalist and writer William Finnegan, whose struggle with his memoir may be a source of inspiration for listeners.
Raymond Pettibon is recognized for his early work created in the midst of the Southern California punk rock scene in the late 1970s-early 80s, most notably his hand drawn concert flyers and logo design for his brother's band, Black Flag. On this week's episode of Wheels Off, he joins Rhett to talk about his creating his own place in the art world and the DIY approach that he continues to maintain. Raymond and Rhett discuss the unique way he combines art with words in his work, and why it's important to stay grounded in the work itself.Raymond Pettibon emerged from Southern California DIY culture and its punk-rock sensibility, and his work still embraces a youthful edginess and sense of political engagement. Drawing from disparate cultural sources—which range from Marcel Proust and William Blake to the Bible—the artist makes cartoon-inspired ink drawings on paper which evoke the aesthetics of fanzines and concert flyers. Baseball players, trains, crashing waves, political figures, and comic book characters make frequent appearances, often accompanied by cryptic, ironic snippets of handwritten text. Pettibon has been the subject of solo shows at the New Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, and the Kunsthalle Wien. Alongside his fine-art practice, Pettibon has illustrated album art for Sonic Youth and Black Flag, among other musical acts.Wheels Off is brought to you by Osiris Media. Titres écoutés dans l'émission : “Dirty Boots”, “Tunic (Song For Karen)”, “Mary-Christ”, “Kool Thing”, “Mote”, “.My Friend Goo”, “Disappearer”, “Mildred Pierce”, “Cinderella's Big Score”, “Scooter & Jinx”, “Titanium Expose”, “Teenage Riot”, “Kool thing (demo)”. Glenn Branca “Symphony No. 8 - Spiritual Anarchy”, Ciccone Youth “Into The Groove”. Extraits : “Sonic Youth at the New Pilgrim Theatre in New York on September 18th 1981 (Youtube)”, “The Simpsons - Homerpalooza (1996)”(Youtube) Chaque mois dans Radio K7 on rembobine nos cassettes et vous raconte l'histoire d'un album qui a marqué les années 90s. On this week's episode, we take a look back at 2021 with clips from a number of different episodes. We kicked off Art Sense in June of this year and have thus far interviewed 34 guests over 26 episodes. Guests have included best selling authors, museum curators, art historians, blue chip artists, auction house execs, technology experts, crypto artists and top collectors. Guest artists have included the likes of Sandy Skoglund, Marilyn Minter, Raymond Pettibon, Eric Fischl, SWOON, and Mona Kuhn. 2021 is destined to be known for year two of the global pandemic and the rise of NFTs. The market for NFTs skyrocketed over the course of the year and I was able to bring you conversations with some of the most knowledgeable and influential voices in the industry. In March, Beeple's “First 5000 Days” sold for $69 million through an auction at Christie's. Over the course of the year, I spoke to the auction house executive that brokered the deal as well as the person who paid the $69 million to acquire the work. Crypto artists like Sarah Zucker, Robness and Jen Stark provided the artists' perspective, while Colborn Bell explained what motivated him to create the Museum of Crypto Art. There was one question that I asked each guest from this space. What's in store for the future of NFTs and what hurdles stand in the way?
Welcome home, DTD-ers! We've missed you so, so we've put together a very special minisode. This week, we discuss the BLACK FLAG episode of Bryan Ray Turcotte and Bo Bushnell's terrific THE ART OF PUNK web series. And if you know Black Flag like we know Black Flag (and we know Black Flag, bc we're no poseurs), then you know that Black Flag's art means primarily the work of the great Raymond Pettibon -- with all due respect to the also great Edward Colver. So what more do we need to say? This is good, important, and meaningful stuff. Pettibon's art and Black Flag's music aren't too bad, either. In short: you should check out our new episode NOW; you won't be disappointed, especially if you're a fan of sound effects. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
01:11 - Raymond Pettibon discusses his life and work. Pettibon rose to prominence in the 1970s by being the visual force behind South Bay punk scions like Black Flag and the Minutemen. Known for his characteristic paintings which employ mark making more closely akin to drawing and printmaking combined with handwritten prose, he explores themes as diverse as literature, art history, philosophy, religion, politics, sport, and sexuality. His work can be found in every major institution and he is represented in New York by David Zwirner.28:49 - The week's top art headlines.

Dialogues | A podcast from David Zwirner about art, artists, and the creative process
A conversation about life as art with the author of The Flamethrowers. Few merge writing about art and writing about life the way Rachel Kushner does. A former editor at Artforum and Bomb, she’s deeply interested in memorializing the culture around the art—the conversations, the characters, the tall tales. In her 2013 novel The Flamethrowers, a National Book Award finalist, the New York art world of the 70s was brought to scintillating life; and in her new collection of essays, The Hard Crowd, she writes about Richard Prince, Raymond Pettibon, and Jeff Koons as vividly as she writes about her deep personal passion for motorcycles and muscle cars. You can order The Hard Crowd now.

The art world is evolving, fast. What has long been considered one of the world’s most elitist societies, composed of high brow art dealers, collectors and artists, has slowly opened up. The digitization of art has not only changed the means in which art is experienced and sold, but it’s also evolved its aesthetic. Most of all, it’s democratized the playing field for a younger generation, one with its own curatorial taste and behaviors. Lucas Zwirner is highly aware of this shift, and it’s been this shift he’s been navigating through as head of content at David Zwirner gallery in New York, arguably one of the world’s most prestigious galleries that represents artists including everyone from Jeff Koons and Barbara Kruger to Raymond Pettibon and Jordan Wolfson. In his role, Lucas leads and creates a unified brand voice and editorial vision for the gallery, its publishing house, and its online platforms, deepening the conversation around the gallery’s artists, exhibitions, and projects through books, podcasts, video, web content, public programming, strategic partnerships, and online sales. I called him up from his New York apartment where we broke down the many ways in which the art world is opening up, and if, it’s really becoming more democratic.

On this week's Talk Art, we're feeling the POWER of LOVE! Russell & Robert chat to the captivating superstar duo of Ellie Goulding and Caspar Jopling from their home in Oxfordshire. As passionate art collectors, we learn about the artists they admire and collect including Rebecca Warren, Julie Mehretu, Tracey Emin, Donna Huanca, Raymond Pettibon, George Roy, Wolfgang Tillmans, Jack Whitten, Raqib Shaw, Cy Gavin, Christina Quarles and Ellie’s favourite - a neon of a double cross by Jonathan Horowitz in rainbow colours. We hear about the shyness of their first date visiting two exhibitions in London: Anselm Kiefer at White Cube followed by Robert Rauschenberg at Tate Modern. As their relationship grew, visiting exhibitions has become an integral part of their life as well as art fairs like Frieze and Art Basel!Ellie discusses her dedication to female artists and how her art collection has evolved since meeting Caspar, the works she used to collect were “dark stuff” gothic in style like ship wrecks or skeletons, skulls or ghosts! Whilst Caspar reminisces about his first art purchase growing up of a poster by Sir Terry Frost, his admiration for his uncle the legendary gallerist Jay Jopling (White Cube), how he advises his friends to support and collect art, and how he even experimented with screen printing and painting during his teens inspired by Rauschenberg, Richard Prince and Andy Warhol. With no motivation for investment, Ellie feels a close correlation between the art she loves and the songs she writes, something she explored whilst writing her forthcoming new album 'Brightest Blue': “I love the idea that you can buy something, that I can stare at for a long time and then it could maybe draw a song or a lyric out of me”. The album's title directly inspired by a Doug Wheeler artwork the couple saw at David Zwirner's gallery in New York. The intense installation of a blue room was “like walking into another world”.Art also inspires her music's visuals, collaborating with creative director Imogen Snell as well as photographers Louie Banks, Ronan Park and Rankin. We discuss her musical collaborator SerpentWithFeet who appears on her new album but also recently sang at her and Caspar's wedding in Yorkshire. We remember her collaborator the late rapper Juice Wrld and the impact of his passing on artists like Katherine Bernhardt and the international art and music communities. Finally we discuss Caspar's experiences working for Sotheby's but also within the film industry, his current studying for his MBA at Oxford University, the recent news of the Gallery Climate Coalition and how the art world is approaching sustainability, online viewing rooms, the positives and negatives of buying art (and clothes) online, and the escapism in lockdown watching period drama Downtown Abbey as well as the joys of completing Kandinsky and Lichtenstein-inspired puzzles! Ellie's fourth studio album 'Brightest Blue' can be pre-ordered NOW, released in full on 17th July 2020! This week have a wonderful conversation with artist Chris Shary. This Northern California drama teacher is one of the most prolific punk rock artists since Raymond Pettibon. He has most recently worked with artist such as 7 Seconds, Teenage Bottlerocket, and Old Man Markley, but most importantly, Chris Shary has been the go-to artist for Descendents/ALL since 1991. Shary might not have invented the Milo logo, but in his long run with the band, he has made it into something all his own while staying true to its original spirit. We chat with Shary from his Stockton, Calif., home about he came to work for Descendents, starting a Christmas sweatshirt craze, and parodies of his work. https://chrisshary.bigcartel.com/ --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/adultingwell/support

Michael Petry, author, artist and Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art in London talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about his new book “The Word Is Art” that addresses how contemporary global artists incorporate text and language into their works that speaks to some of the most pressing issues of the 21st century. In the digital and online age words have become more important than ever with text becoming information and information striving to become a free form of expression. “The Word Is Art” looks at the work of a diverse range of artists including Annette Messager, Barbara Kruger, Cerith Wyn Evans, Christian Marclay, Christopher Wool, Chun Kwang Young, eL Seed, Fiona Banner, Ghada Amer, Glenn Ligon, Harland Miller, Jenny Holzer, Kay Rosen, Laure Prouvost, Martin Creed, Rachel Whiteread, Raymond Pettibon, Roni Horn, Tania Bruguera, Zhang Huan and many more interpreting how the digital and online age have made words more important than ever. “The Word Is Art” takes us on a fascinating and richly illustrated tour interpreting these trending global art forms. We talked to Michael about his inspiration for creating this book and his spin on our LGBTQ issues. When asked what his personal commitment is to LGBTQ civil rights Petry stated, “I’m one of the ancients who’s been around fighting for LGBTQ rights since the early eighties and I’ve been involved in so many different ways over the years. I consider myself queer because I think that is a broader term that for me represents who I am and what I think and part of that commitment as a queer who is an artist and who also is an author and a curator is to try and bring queer artists to the foreground of the art world. We only have to think back a few years to realize that LGBTQ artists were very marginalized and that’s still the case for many people. In the LGBTQ movement every year I curate a Pride Exhibition in London which I really hope to introduce LGBTQ artists not only to that community but to the straight community and I work within all the structures that are available whether that’s museums or the corporate structure to get that recognition for LGBTQ people because I think what is at issue in the broader political sphere is this notion of fear. Fear of others and of course that fear is not limited to the general public. It’s also in the art world.” Michael Petry has written a number of books, including “Installation Art”, “The Art of Not Making: the new artist/artisan relationship”, “Nature Morte: Contemporary Artists Reinvigorate the Still-Life Tradition” and his most recent work “The Word Is Art” all published by Thames & Hudson. In 2019 he will be speaking and exhibiting his work worldwide. For More Info: michaelpetry.com Hear 450+ LGBT Interviews @OUTTAKE VOICES

Raymond Pettibon is known for the pulpy intensity of his ink drawings, the cryptic text that accompanies them. Nowadays he shows internationally all over the world, but when he started he was just a guy who was studying economics and drew some album covers for his brother who was in a band called Black Flag. We talk about all of that--plus weird brushes.

Duncan and Richard talk to Dominic Molon about, Sympathy for the Devil: Art and Rock and Roll Since 1967. There are lots of "Rock out with your cock out!" kind of stupid comments. Paul Klein and Wesley hated it, hear from the curator go check out the show and see what you think. From the MCA site:"Sympathy for the Devil: Art and Rock and Roll Since 1967 examines the dynamic relationship between rock music and contemporary visual art, a relationship that crosses continents, generations, and cultures. Since the late 1950s this unlikely hybrid of rhythm-and-blues and country music has had an undeniable impact on society while drastically changing with the times. Artists from the 1960s to the present have maintained a strong connection to rock, beginning with Andy Warhol’s involvement with The Velvet Underground (who released their Warhol-produced landmark album The Velvet Underground and Nico in 1967 -- the same year the MCA opened its doors). More recently, artists such as Slater Bradley, Raymond Pettibon, and Mike Kelley have created album covers and music videos for rock bands, while many noted rock musicians such as John Lennon, Bryan Ferry, and Peter Townsend have emerged from art schools. This exhibition is the most serious and comprehensive look at the intimate and inspired relationship between the visual arts and rock-and-roll culture to date, charting their intersection through works of art, album covers, music videos, and other materials. The exhibition addresses the importance of specific cities such as London, New York, Los Angeles, and Cologne; rock and roll’s style, celebrity, and identity politics in art; the experience, energy, and sense of devotion rock music inspires; and the dual role that many individuals play in both the sonic and visual realms. This exhibition is curated by MCA Curator Dominic Molon."

This show was recorded, edited, and mixed all on Sunday hence the late posting!!. This week: "Grub" a compost minded exhibit by Claire Pentecost organized, mulled, and presented by 13 SAIC grad students. Brian Andrews checks in from Portland where apparently all of the SF Hipster are fleeing to. Duncan and Richard muck through the Hollywood notion of an art show, but in real life, and do a couple quickie reviews of work at Lisa Boyle, Three Walls, Western Exhibitions, and a couple other places. In a shocking turn of events, the Raymond Pettibon interview is postponed until after the art fairs.Apologies for the editorial slop this week, I was in a hurry.Real show note to follow soon!PLEASE contact us if you wish to help us out at the art fair.
