Two people walked into church, but only one was in the ‘right' before God… Exploring the parable of the Pharisee and Tax Collector we will be reminded of the grace of God that underpins everything we are about at HumeRidge.
The mission Jesus gave us—to make disciples of all nations—is too big for human strength alone. But we're not meant to do it alone; God has always empowered His people by His Spirit, and He still does today. The Holy Spirit clothes us with power, pushes us outward in mission, and fills us with boldness to bring hope to a broken world—this is our calling, and the time is now.If you enjoyed this sermon please consider subscribing. The role of women in the church has unfortunately become one of controversy in some places. Guest speaker Tim Hanna takes us through how we engage with Scripture about this topic and where the weight of Scripture leads us. And why it need not be divisive, but rather enhancing for the church. Tim has spent 30 years in local church ministry in Australia, leading local churches in a number of states as well as lecturing at Theological College and in the church leadership space with Willow Creek Australia. He also spent ten years as CEO of Compassion Australia. Since then Tim has been involved in coaching and consulting and is currently the Chairman of Council, of Churches of Christ Queensland. His own experience and opportunities have given him a passion to help leaders flourish in their own leadership roles. Tim is married to Chris and they have nine children, 26 grandchildren and he loves those sometimes crazy, family times. He is also a sports tragic, enjoying most sports, and doesn't mind a good coffee. If you enjoyed this sermon please consider subscribing.CONNECT WITH US Instagram: www.instagram.com/humeridgechurch Facebook: www.facebook.com/humeridgechurch YouTube: www.youtube.com/humeridgechurchHave you made a decision to follow Jesus? 2. In a world that often feels complex, simple faith may be more relevant than ever. Following God isn't about rules, regulations, or a list of “have-tos” and “can't dos.” We have a tendency to complicate what is meant to be simple. Yet, Jesus provided us with a clear and straightforward guide for how we should live His way. Let's dive into that together with guest speaker from Churches of Christ Queensland – Ben Pearson.Ben lives in Townsville, North Queensland, and serves as a regional engagement partner for Churches of Christ Queensland. He has led two churches as both Lead and Senior Pastor and enjoys motorbikes and water sports. Ben is married to Terrena, and together they have three children, a daughter-in-law, and, as of last year, welcomed their first grandchild. In a world more connected than ever, many still feel deeply alone. Church was never meant to be done solo. At HumeRidge, we're exploring what it means to truly walk with one another, reflecting the love and character of Jesus. In the last message, we celebrated the beauty of welcome—in this message, we go deeper into how we live out faith together. “Walking Each Other Home” reminds us that community, encouragement, and humility are at the heart of who we are.If you enjoyed this sermon please consider subscribing.CONNECT WITH US Instagram: www.instagram.com/humeridgechurch Facebook: www.facebook.com/humeridgechurch YouTube: www.youtube.com/humeridgechurchHave you made a decision to follow Jesus? 2. Luke 5 records an encounter between the disciples of Jesus and a group of Pharisees – they are at the home of Levi the tax collector where the Pharisees complained bitterly to Jesus' disciples, “Why do you (mainly aimed at Jesus) eat and drink with such scum?” Not very gracious or what we would expect to come from the mouths of those considered religious leaders. Jesus drew criticism and condemnation often because of who he sat with , ate with and those who seemed drawn to him and his gospel. As we reconsider and are open to be reminded of the things that should matter in the life of our church, we should not miss this example from the one we seek to follow. Join us this Sunday morning – as we look at what Luke had to say and consider carefully whether anyone is left out, forgotten, not in and what we may do to guard against this.If you enjoyed this sermon please consider subscribing.CONNECT WITH US Instagram: www.instagram.com/humeridgechurch Facebook: www.facebook.com/humeridgechurch YouTube: www.youtube.com/humeridgechurchHave you made a decision to follow Jesus? The four gospel writers give us a lot of information about the Easter week. In this sermon Richard Brown draws from these accounts to provide us an overview of this amazing week. He connects the events of Easter to God's purpose for who we are as followers of Jesus today as we understand what unfolded in Jerusalem 2000 years ago.ABOUT RICHARDRichard is a retired school principal who spent most of his career leading Toowoomba Christian College. Now as he has moved into the next stage of life, he enjoys reading and spending time with family and grandchildren. Give him a suduko or a cryptic crossword, or some sort of puzzle and he will enjoy the challenge. He is happy to chat about things philosophical and has a deep love for the Word of God. In the first week of this Prayer series, Ross challenged us to engage with the Lord's Prayer daily—not just to recite it, but to reflect on its meaning and deepen our understanding of why Jesus taught this model of prayer. Tim Keller once said, “The Lord's Prayer may be the single set of words spoken more often than any other in the history of the world.” in this sermon, Graham, having taken on this challenge and incorporated this into his daily prayer life, dwells on these words, seeking to lead us into a deeper relationship with God.If you enjoyed this sermon please consider subscribing.CONNECT WITH USInstagram: www.instagram.com/humeridgechurchFacebook: www.facebook.com/humeridgechurchYouTube: www.youtube.com/humeridgechurchHave you made a decision to follow Jesus? When did you learn to pray? Were you taught or did you just pick it up by listening to others? As we listen to people pray we may notice phrases common across multiple prayers. The disciples asked Jesus how to pray, and he gave them "The Lord's Prayer". It begins with "Our Father"—and right here, thousands tune out. But why? This sermon is the first in our series, Prayer: Talking with God. Prayer is essential in helping us discover more about God and ourselves. Jesus told His disciples, "It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go, the Advocate will not come to you" (John 16:7). He was clear—the Holy Spirit is not a lesser substitute but a greater gift. Yet for many, the Spirit feels distant, confusing, or even absent. When the people of Israel were exiled to Babylon, they received a surprising and challenging message from God through the prophet Jeremiah. Despite their desired rebellion, Jeremiah's letter calls them to settle in the city, seek its welfare, and pray for its peace. Instead of resisting or withdrawing, they were called to live faithfully and bless the place where they had been sent. In this sermon, Ross Savill unpacks this message from Jeremiah. By drawing parallels to our lives as followers of Jesus, we are challenged to live faithfully as "resilient exiles", engaging in our communities with love and purpose. When Austrian philosopher Ivan Illich was asked about the most revolutionary way to change society, he answered, "Neither revolution nor reformation can ultimately change a society, rather you must tell a new powerful tale, one so persuasive that it sweeps away the old myths and becomes the preferred story, one so inclusive that it gathers all the bits of our past and our present into a coherent whole, one that even shines some light into our future so that we can take the next step…If you want to change a society, then you have to tell an alternative story. There are many religious traditions, even Christian Church denominations, where God is not represented as friendly. He's stern, angry, or just plain mean. Jesus came to help people like you and me know God – he came to show us a God we would want to know. Jesus lived amongst people as the complete, perfect representation of God. And he also told stories, stories of what God is like. He knew the power of stories. In this sermon Ross speaks about one of Jesus' most well-known stories and what it says about God and you. How does the Word of God make us the people He intends us to be? As we look at the children of Israel on their journey from Egypt to the Promised Land, God gloriously delivered his people and provided for their needs. But for many of them, the stubbornness and hardness of their own hearts meant that they did not receive all that God was offering them. In this sermon we welcome guest speaker Richard Brown, as he asks the question - What lessons can we learn today so that our lives experience an encounter with God's word that brings the right response? About Richard: Richard has spoken several times previously at HumeRidge. He spent his working life in education having started his career as a Maths teacher. For many years he was the Principal of Toowoomba Christian College until he retired in 2022. He has a deep love of the Word of God and enjoys bringing the truths found in the scriptures to life. Now that he has more time on his hands he is actively researching in the area of a ‘Christian school in the liberal arts tradition'. This sermon is the second in our series, Encountering God. In Revelation 2 we read a letter from Jesus to the Church in Ephesus. It starts well, sounds like a great Church, but the tone changes quite dramatically as the Church is reminded to consider how far it has drifted, how far it has fallen. They are reminded that they don't love Jesus or each other as they did at first. As humans, we will all experience grief or suffer loss; a job, a relationship, a loved one. When we grieve we have a Saviour who understands our pain and walks with us through it. In this sermon Jenny Savill reminds us that as we care for others, we have Jesus' perfect example to follow. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. If you enjoyed this sermon please consider subscribing. Unity is one of those things in Churches that is so easy to take for granted – and yet we quickly realise how vitally important it is when it's not there. Jesus knew how unity makes a difference in the lives of his followers and the witness of his Church. He prayed about it and we have a record of that prayer in John 17. He prayed for us, us who in 2024 seek to follow him and give him authority in our lives. This Sunday, Ross continues to share the importance of handling unity with care. That's why it's called the present.” What we do with our time matters to God so we should use it wisely. This sermon was part of our Family Service, where we heard updates from our children and youth about all that has been happening in their programs. Jackson goes on to explore how we should handle children with care, and God's warning on how we mustn't lead them to sin. He also encourages us to take inspiration from the children in our lives, as we learn about who Jesus teaches is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. James the half brother of Jesus made some strong statements about the importance of taking care of how we use our words. In chapter one of his letter, he says "If you claim to be religious but don't control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless". In this sermon we will take some time to examine the importance of handling our words with care. Ross speaks about the power of our words, and gives us some practical tips. Our opinions have been shaped throughout our lifetime. Some are deeply ingrained, others we hold less tightly. When it comes to matters of faith, which opinions matter? And how are we to deal with those who hold an opinion different to our own? In this sermon Brendon Walmsley points to the distinctions made by the apostle Paul and to the one response that holds us together. If you enjoyed this sermon please consider subscribing. There's a recurring pattern that comes out of recent research: Bible engagement is directly related to spiritual growth. However, Bible Society Research recently showed that only 2 in 10 Aussie Christians read their Bible daily. As we get busier, our attention span gets shorter, and communication must happen within the span of a text message, a Facebook post, or a Tweet of 140 characters. So how can Christians be brought back to a book of over 700,000 words? Perhaps one way is to learn again how to handle the Word of God with care. In this sermon Neale Proellocks kicks off our series 'Handle with Care'. If you enjoyed this sermon please consider subscribing. Despite the dramatic turn of events throughout the book of Esther, nothing catches God by surprise. All along, He remains in control - guiding, blocking, prompting, delaying and empowering in order to have His plan carried out. His providence and sovereignty is evident in every tiny detail. In this sermon, Brendon Walmsley shines a light on the simple yet profound answer to Mordecai's question that gives us confidence to take the next step forward in our faith. This sermon continues our series from the book of Esther looking at the antagonist, or the villain, of this account, a man named Haman. Tim Keller stated that, “Haman is the most vivid and sustained case study in the Bible of everything the Bible says about pride and humility and what happens to people who let pride rage unchecked.” In this sermon Ross will explore these concepts of pride and humility, as we take the opportunity to learn important lessons from the life of this man Haman. Not a lot is said of Mordecai in the story of Esther, but what we can surmise from his actions are that he was a humble and obedient follower of Yahweh, despite living in a society that did not honour God. How can we as New Testament believers live as humble and obedient followers of Jesus in our 21st Century secular society? In this sermon Rachel seeks to answer this question. The rise of social media has seen a significant increase in the number of voices influencing our decision-making. Have you ever been given a gift so generous that you aren't sure if you can accept it? This sermon will look at Paul's message to the Galatian Church, who have been misled to believing that they needed to add to the gift of the Gospel by proving themselves righteous through the law. In this passage we see our natural tendency towards trying to be justified by our own works - rather than living in the freedom of what Christ has done for us. Listen on as we see the sufficiency of the Gospel: Jesus + Nothing = Everything. If you enjoyed this sermon please consider subscribing.
