The East St. Louis High School Jazz Band and the band’s director, Delano Redmond participated in an intensive workshop with musicians Marcus Printup, trumpet, Ali Jackson, drums, Walter Blanding Jr., saxophones, and Wynton Marsalis. The University City Jazz Festival is enjoying the success of it's first venture at bringing together jazz enthusiasts together for a second straight year, to hear an eclectic list of musicians perform in Heman Park for free. The artists on the bill include Dawn Weber, the STL Metrobones, a reunion of the group Tracer, Bach to the Future, along with a tribute to Miles Davis with Maurice Carnes' Hipjaz Quintet and Trio Tres Bien. The University Jazz festival is produced, & founded by Silverman Music & Autumn Hill Records. Michael & Rob Silverman, of Silverman Music, are also two of the musicians in the group Bach to the Future. The festival was held on September 22nd, 2012.

This I Love Jazz features two artists from the St. Louis area that have enjoyed national success - generations apart. Willie Akins is a senior ambassador of the saxophone. His career, both in New York and the Gateway City, has been swinging for over half a century. Montez Coleman, from the Metro East, is a young drummer who is making waves both here and in the Big Apple. Together, with guitarist Eric Slaughter and bassist Bob Deboo, they made great straight-ahead jazz at Jazz at the Bistro - captured live for this I Love Jazz. Also featured in this program, is a look at the life and work of another native St. Louisian, Al Hirschfeld- through a special exhibition at the Sheldon Art Gallery that explores the artist's lifelong fascination with jazz and the musical arts. Our Jazz Gem features another sax/drum combination, Flip Phillips and Butch Miles. And on our educational segment, Building Blocks of Jazz, Phil Dunlap looks at the history of the piano in jazz music.

Building Blocks of Jazz visits Saxquest, a one-of-a-kind shop and museum in South St. Louis to learn about the history of the saxophone. On Jazz Gems, we feature DIVA, an all-women jazz group recorded back in 2002. And we tag along with Hamiet Bluiett as he shares his commitment to jazz education working with students from the Sunrise Conservatory.
