Ann Hampton Callaway talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about her upcoming performance with the Boston Gay Men's Chorus (BGMC) on March 16th at Jordan Hall in Boston, MA at 8P. The concert entitled "Melodies for a Movement" will highlight the "Tyler's Suite" that sheds light on the devastating impact of cyber-harassment and bullying that our LGBTQ youth continue to face. Tyler Clementi was the accomplished violinist who took his life in 2010 after being cyber-bullied by his Rutgers roommate for being gay. This powerful performance will feature a suite in nine movements for chorus with a solo violin performance dedicated to the memory of Tyler Clementi. The "Tyler's Suite" was created under the leadership of Composer Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin) and explores the voices and experiences of Tyler and his family through the music of eleven of today's top composers including Ann Hampton Callaway. "Melodies for a Movement" will also feature a cabaret set by Callaway one of America's most gifted and prolific artists. Through the stirring composition of "Tyler's Suite" and the mesmerizing performance by Ann Hampton Callaway this fabulous concert event will evoke empathy, foster understanding and promote acceptance. Especially in these difficult times with over 600 anti LGBTQ bills in states across the country, women's rights continue to be on the chopping block, antisemitism and hate crimes on the rise all as we head toward the 2024 presidential election. We talked to Ann about what she hopes to accomplish with her music and her spin on our LGBTQ issues.  Ann Hampton Callaway is one of America's most gifted artists in pop and jazz. A leading champion of the great American Songbook she's made her mark as a singer, pianist, composer, lyricist, arranger, actress, educator, TV host and producer. Voted by Broadway World as “Celebrity of the Year” and two years in a row as “Best Jazz Vocalist” Ann is a born entertainer. She is best known for Tony-nominated performance in the hit Broadway musical “Swing!” and for writing and singing the theme song to the hit TV series “The Nanny.” Her latest CD “Finding Beauty, Originals Volume 1” premiered number 1 in Jazz on Amazon. Currently Ann is working on “Finding Beauty, Originals Volume 2”. The Boston Gay Men's Chorus founded in 1982 is one of New England's largest and most successful community-based choruses consisting of over 200 voices. "Melodies for a Movement" honors Tyler Clementi's memory while igniting the flame of positive change to build a world where every individual is cherished for exactly who they are.  For More Info & Tix… LISTEN: 600+ LGBTQ Chats @OUTTAKE VOICES

The melody had three daddies — in 1944 bandleaders Duke Ellington and Harry James collaborated with alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges to develop the tune — but it was those sassy lyrics that made the song: I never cared much for moonlit skies, I never winked back at fireflies, But now that the stars are in your eyes, I'm Beginning to See the Light! Those words came from the smart pen of the great Don George. In his book, The Poets of Tin Pan Alley, Philip Furia praised George's witty use of a list of “light” images and his ability to deal with a difficult song. “Ellington's tune was particularly hard to set,” Furia noted, “since each A section consists of the same, driving vamp-like phrase repeated three times over before the melody finally changes.” In his way, George heightens this musical insistence, using the same rhyme for the first three lines of each section, then “George ends by rekindling one of the oldest songwriting cliches, mixing his metaphors of light and heat:” But now that your lips are burning mine, I'm beginning to see the light.Beyond the LightWhile Don George surely is best known as one of Ellington's prime lyricists, his career spanned another 40 years following the Duke era and included such pop hits as "The Yellow Rose of Texas” for the iconic Mitch Miller.George also worked on special material for many performers, from Nat King Cole and Patti Page to The Pointer Sisters. His lyrics are a study guide for wordsmiths of all stripes. For instance, in David Jenness' and Don Velsey's discussion of composer Moose Charlap, they note that one of the cleverest apologies ever comes from a 1956 George lyric for a famous Charlap melody: The girl in my arms meant nothing to me, I Was Telling Her About You.On the ChartsBut let's get back to “Beginning to See the Light.” A year after its composition, the song spent several weeks on “Your Hit Parade” and charted three times in 1945, with co-writer Harry James' version leading the pack. Ellington vocalist Joya Sherrill, who was only 17, had just joined the band when they recorded the tune in an arrangement that featured co-author Johnny Hodges on sax and Lawrence Brown on trombone.Jazz instrumentals of song have been recorded by bassist Oscar Pettiford, pianist Art Tatum, drummer Chico Hamilton and vibist Red Norvo. Vocalists Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee and Frank Sinatra all have made memorable renditions.More recently, Ann Hampton Callaway included it in her 1996 tribute to Fitzgerald, guitarist Martin Taylor and the David Grisman Quartet recorded it in 1999, and in 2004 — 60 years after the song's creation — it was revived by the late, great Al Jarreau. Our Take on the TuneOur latest Duke Ellington number, this is a sweet vehicle for sassy solos by everyone in the band. For Video Edtition, Please Click and Subscribe Here: https://youtu.be/Bi3h3HdGKv8 Michael Ernest Renzi (April 28, 1941 – September 28, 2021) was an American composer, music director, pianist, and jazz musician. We celebrate his rich legacy with a few of those who worked with him and knew him best. Nicolas King was among the guests to appear. An immensely talented musician, Renzi was influenced in his early years as a pianist by Bill Evans. After living and working in and around Providence, he graduated from the Boston Conservatory of Music in 1973 and Berklee College Of Music the following year. During these years of study he worked with local bands and as accompanist to visiting artists. Among these was Sylvia Sims and it was as a direct result of this engagement that he was hired to work with Mel Tormé. In 1976 he moved to New York City and from the late 70s onwards through the next two decades and into the early years of the twenty-first century, he appeared on scores of albums, sometimes only as pianist but most often also as arranger. Renzi also plays keyboards and occasionally guitar. Developing his own, hard bop style, Renzi also became a much sought after arranger. As a brief listing of the numerous artists with whom he has worked will show, many of them are singers with whom he established a special rapport, and in some cases has acted as musical director: Ruth Brown, Laverne Butler, Ann Hampton Callaway, Diahann Carroll, Freddy Cole, Cynthia Crane, Meredith D'Ambrosio, Blossom Dearie, Scott Hamilton, Lena Horne, Etta Jones, Jack Jones, Eartha Kitt, Steve LaSpina, Cleo Laine, Peggy Lee, Jay Leonhart, Gloria Lynne, Maureen McGovern, Liza Minnelli, Gerry Mulligan, Mark Murphy, Houston Person, John Pizzarelli, Annie Ross, George Shearing, an eight-week tour with Frank Sinatra, Carol Sloane, Grady Tate.

One of the most sought after singers, writers, and performers in the entertainment world, Everett Bradley’s resume reads like a who’s who of show business. Spanning from multiple genres of music to theater and television, this Grammy-nominated force of nature has lent his unique blend of extraordinary talent, exuberance, and heart to every tour, session, Broadway show and TV program he has been a part of. And there have been many. His vocal, percussion and keyboard work have included playing with Bruce Springsteen’s famed E Street Band, and touring with Bon Jovi and Hall & Oates. He’s been Carly Simon’s musical director, and worked with luminaries ranging from David Bowie to Cyndi Lauper, Bobby McFerrin, Ann Hampton Callaway, Richie Sambora, Chris Botti, Lucy Woodward and Jann Klose. He’s also worked with renowned producers Snarky Puppy and Quincy Jones. Recently, Everett finished a stint as musical director/bandleader for NBC’s Meredith Vieira Show, for which he also wrote the show’s theme song as well as all the other music included in the program. Originally from South Carolina, Everett’s musical influences were initially Motown and Stax records – the stuff his siblings were listening to. But when his family moved to Indiana, Everett’s friends were listening to Aerosmith and Billy Joel, unknowingly laying the foundation for his later musical success in rock ‘n roll. It was a high school theater teacher, however, that first spotted Everett’s theatrical spark and encouraged his parents to foster the talent that would ultimately lead him to performing on Broadway in Stomp, Swing, and After Midnight. The son of a high school principal and an elementary school teacher, Everett’s expected path was to be athletics and academics. He was offered a scholarship to study engineering at Boston University and he played football, like his older brother who was a pro for the Detroit Lions. But unbeknownst to his father, his mother had agreed to get him voice lessons, so he auditioned and was also offered a scholarship to study music at Indiana University, which is what he chose. His new show "HOLIDELIC: Home with Papadelic" premieres Dec 17th ay 8 PM EST live on Facebook and YouTube. All proceeds go to SAY.org. holidelic.com

Cabaret performances are often known for bringing alive the Great American Songbook from the 1920s through the 1950s for contemporary audiences. But modern-day cabaret does much more than preserve the past—it also promotes and fosters the new generation of American composers and creates a uniquely vibrant musical and theatrical experience for its audiences. So You Want to Sing Cabaret is the first book of its kind to examine in detail the unique vocal and nonvocal requirements for professional performance within the exciting genre of cabaret. With a foreword by cabaret legend Lorna Luft, So You Want to Sing Cabaret includes interviews from the top professionals in the cabaret industry, including Michael Feinstein, Ann Hampton Callaway, Roy Sander, Sidney Myer, Jeff Harner and many others. There are also chapters devoted to crafting your show, lyric connection, “do-it-yourself” production and promotion, and working with your musical team. David Sabella and Sue Matsuki have crafted the perfect one-volume resource for both the aspiring cabaret singer and the singing teacher who seeks to learn more about this unique art form. Hailed by the New York Times as “a charismatic young trumpeter who maintains an earnest sideline as a singer”, Benack has a knack for delighting audiences with panache, in the spirit of classic crooners like Sinatra & Mel Tormé, with a nod to legendary trumpet showmen Louis Armstrong & Dizzy Gillespie. Equally comfortable in both Jazz and Pop settings, Benack has worked with some of the greatest acts in music today, touring domestically as a trumpet soloist with Josh Groban, Ben Folds, fashion icon Isaac Mizrahi, as well as European engagements with Jazz Bass extraordinaire Christian McBride. He recently headlined Birdland Jazz Club alongside Cabaret legend Ann Hampton-Callaway, in tribute to “Louis & Ella”. Benny's been a guest artist with the Pittsburgh Symphony Pops Orchestra, the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, the Minsk Philharmonic Orchestra, featured both as a vocalist and trumpeter with each ensemble. In the Fall of 2017, Benack released his debut album “One of a Kind” to critical acclaim, noting he “reels off songs that come alive with his lustrous trumpet and golden bari-tenor vocalastics” - World Music Report. We're featuring an interview with bassist Larry Gray on this week's episode.  Larry's multi-instrumental path has taken him through performance on guitar, flute, cello, and piano in addition to bass.  Larry is in high demand as a jazz bassist in Chicago, performing regularly for decades at Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase, and he teaches at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  Enjoy! About Larry Born on Chicago’s south side, Larry Gray is considered by many to be one of jazz music’s finest double bassists. His impressive versatility and uncommon musical curiosity keep him in demand as both a leader and sideman. Larry began his musical studies at the age of five when his father brought home an accordion and introduced him to his first teacher. Invigorated by this study, Larry added the guitar to his arsenal and studied piano seriously for many years thereafter. It was not until he was in his twenties that he decided to switch to the double bass. Larry went on to study classical music extensively, eventually adding the cello to his long list of loved instruments. His principal teachers were Joseph Guastafeste, longtime principal bassist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and cellist Karl Fruh, a highly regarded soloist and teacher. Under Mr. Fruh's guidance, he received bachelors and masters degrees in cello performance from the Chicago Musical College of Roosevelt University. Episode #8: Singing with Liz Callaway is literally a dream-come-true for me. Ever since I first heard her spectacular voice on the Baby cast recording, I have marveled at the purity and musicality of her voice. What a privilege to have her on this podcast today, singing my duet setting of the Edna St. Vincent Millay poem, "Recuerdo." Recorded 1/31/06. (Click here to see the text of the poem.)Since her Tony-nominated performace in Baby, she's maintained flourishing careers on Broadway (Miss Saigon, Cats, The Look of Love), in film (providing the singing voice for the title characters in the animated films The Swan Princess and Anastasia), and in cabaret and recordings (check out her most recent CD, The Beat Goes On, and Sibling Revelry, the terrific recording of her show with her super-talented sister, Ann Hampton Callaway). Liz's discography is incredibly impressive, and rightfully so.
