Amos and Edda are in a body of water, so that of course means that it is unclear: a) what kind of body of water it is, b) how deep the water is, and c) if there are any other people around. Amos threatens (promises?) to drown himself waiting for Edda to swim by again. I mean, they're married or at least dating at this point, so I'm not sure why he's being so stealthy about looking at her. Later, he sees legs under the water and decides to swim through them BEFORE BEING CERTAIN THEY BELONG TO EDDA. It ends up being Edda, who traps him between her thighs (metaphor!), and then he basically stays there, with his head pressed against her vagina. Mostly, it's the top of his head, which is confusing but also a bit of a relief. There's a moment where it totally seems like Ol' Mac-El-Dee wanted to imply that Amos was going downtown while in the pool, but the way it's drawn would rule that out. Physical impossibility rears its head in a strip where it appears Edda has removed Amos's head from his body. In the end, they either fuck, drown, or fart jointly under the water. Because ROMANCE! In a bonus strip, Edda dance/romances a dead-eyed Amos (is there any other kind?) and ends up kissing him while standing with her feet on his shoulders. Yeah. Try to imagine what that looks like. Up first, David Cronenberg takes us on a weird journey into a small town where a fringe psychologist is working to get his patients to manifest rage in a physical form, including little rage monsters that terrorize those who invoke their ire in 1979's The Brood picked by Portland Paul. Next, famous American author Mark Twain and three of his characters; Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn and Becky Thatcher, embark on a trip into space to follow Halley's Comet, all in beautiful Claymation in 1985's The Adventures of Mark Twain picked by Eamon. And finally, in a post-apocalyptic world where vigilantes ride planes through streams of air, Mark Hamill plays a bounty hunter bringing in a valuable prisoner only to have him stolen by loose cannon Bill Paxton who wants the hefty reward for himself in Slipstream from 1989. All this plus Sean's adventures in cat love, our AI lawyers, some very heartfelt voicemails, AMC making bad decisions, and so much more!LISTEN NOW:MP3 Direct DonloydAlso, if you like the show, please take a minute and subscribe and/or comment on us on iTunes, Stitcher, Blubrry or Podfeed.net. One summer changed her life forever, when she attended a theater camp thanks to the support of her parents. Flash forward, Kate is now a bonafide Broadway star. In 2001, she made her debut in the short-lived Broadway musical comedy The Adventures of Tom Sawyer as a swing and understudy for characters Amy Lawrence and Becky Thatcher, played by Kristen Bell. She then joined the 2002 Broadway revival of Into the Woods as an understudy. Her first starring role came in the 2003 revival of Gypsy as June; she went on to play Caroline in the 2005 jukebox musical Good Vibrations. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain原文Chapter VII: McDougal's CaveIt was Becky Thatcher's birthday on Saturday and all of Becky's friends were happy and excited."I'm having a big picnic near the river," said Becky to Tom, "After the picnic we can visit McDougal's Cave.""It'll be great fun!" said Tom. He liked Becky a lot.On Saturday morning a big boat took Becky, Tom and their friends down the river. There were no mothers and fathers, but a few boys and girls were eighteen years old. There were a lot of good things to eat and everyone ate, played and had fun. After the picnic the children went to visit McDougal's Cave.Everybody had candles because it was dark inside the cave. Some children were afraid but they all went in.Caves are exciting and mysterious.McDougal's Cave was very, very big.It had hundreds of tunnels, rooms and secret passages. No one knew all of them. The children played and ran in the tunnels and in the rooms. But they always played near the entrance. They did not want to get lost.Tom and Becky wanted to find an ew tunnel. They walked and walked and soon they were alone.Where were the other children? They were lost!In the evening the other children returned to the boat. They laughed and talked, but they were very tired. They did not see that Tom and Becky were not there. The boat took them back to St Petersburg.Huck saw the boat but he did not know about the picnic. The mothers of St Petersburg did not like him. They never invited him to birthday picnics. But tonight Huck was not interested in birthday picnics. He was interested in Injun Joe's treasure. He hid behind a tree and watched an old house."Injun Joe's in that old house," he thought, "I'll stay here and wait. When he comes out I'll follow him and I'll find the treasure."It was late and very dark.Soon two men came out.It was Injun Joe and his friend.Huck followed them quietly."They're going to Widow Douglas's house," thought Huck, "But why?"Suddenly the two men stopped.Injun Joe said, "Many years ago Widow Douglas's husband was very cruel to me. Now I want to hurt the widow. I want to cut her face, her nose and her ears. And you must help me.""Oh, please don't kill her," said his friend. Injun Joe laughed.Huck heard this and wanted to run away. But he remembered that Widow Douglas was kind to him."I must help her," thought Huck, "These men want to kill the poor old woman!"Huck ran quickly to Bill Welsh's house. "Mr Welsh, help, help!"Mr Welsh opened the door. "Mr Welsh, please help me! Two men want to kill Widow Douglas!"Mr Welsh and his sons took their rifles. They ran to the widow's house.Suddenly there was a loud shot.Injun Joe and his friend escaped, but the widow was not hurt. The next morning Huck returned to see Mr Welsh."You're a courageous boy, Huck," said Mr Welsh, "You saved the widow's life. The two men escaped but we'll find them. Sit down and have breakfast with us!"Huck was happy because he saved the widow's life. And now he had new friends, Mr Welsh and his family. That morning all the people of St Petersburg knew about Tom and Becky and they were very worried. Where were they?Tom and Becky were lost in McDougal's Cave. They did not know what to do. Theywere both afraid.Tom took Becky's hand. They walked and walked.Tom wanted to find the entrance of the cave, but he couldn't.Tom and Becky entered a big room with a lot of black bats.It was terrible. The bats flew over their heads and when Tom and Becky ran away the bats followed them. Finally the bats went away.Becky looked at Tom and said, "Tom, where are we?""I don't know, Becky."They continued walking in the dark tunnels. They were both tired and hungry. Becky started crying."No one will ever find us, Tom. There are too many tunnels and rooms. Oh, we're going to die here!""We'll get out of this cave, Becky, you'll see," said Tom.They ate their last piece of cake.Soon their last candle went out. Everything was dark. What time was it? What day was it? They didn't know. They were tired and slept. When they woke up they were very hungry. Suddenly, Tom heard a noise."Listen, Becky! Did you hear a noise? Someone is looking for us!Becky looked at Tom and smiled. "I'm going to see. You stay here, Becky!" said Tom.

At midnight the three boys met on the river.Tom brought some meat to eat.Joe brought some bread and Huck brought a frying pan. They found a small raft and they went down the river to Jackson's Island. When they arrived on the island, they made a fire and cooked some meat."This is fun!" said Joe."We're free and we can do everything we want!" said Tom."What do pirates do?" asked Huck."They go on ships and take the money. Then they go to an island and hide it in a secret place," said Tom.The three boys were happy and slept under the stars. The next morning, they went swimming in the river. Then they went fishing. They cooked the fish on the fire and ate it.It was delicious. After breakfast they walked around the island and went swimming again. In the afternoon they sat around the fire and ate some meat.Suddenly Tom said, "Can you hear a strange noise? Listen!""What is it?" asked Joe."Let's go and see," said Huck. They ran to the river. They saw a steamboat and a lot of small boats near it."Every boat from St Petersburg is out on the river," said Joe, "What's happening?""They're looking for a dead body," said Huck, "The same thing happened last summer when Bill Turner fell into the river and drowned."The three boys felt like heroes and laughed."The people of St Petersburg are looking for us. They're talking about us. We're famous!" said Tom happily. This was an exciting adventure for Tom, Huck and Joe! They felt like real pirates on Jackson's island. The boats and the steamboat went away. The boys went fishing again and had fish for dinner. Then they slept under the stars. But Tom could not sleep. The next morning, he wasn't there."Where's Tom?" asked Joe. "I don't know," said Huck. After a few minutes Huck said, "Look! Tom's swimming in the river. He's coming to the island."Tom told them his story."Last night I couldn't sleep. I thought about Aunt Polly. So I went home but no one saw me. I saw Aunt Polly and your mother, Joe. Poor Aunt Polly cried a lot. And your mother was very sad too. Everyone thinks we're dead. I heard some interesting things.""What did you hear?" asked Huck."Well, there will be a funeral for us on Sunday at the church," said Tom.Huck andJoe looked at him with big eyes. "And now I have a great idea. Listen - "Tom told Huck and Joe his great idea. They liked it and laughed.Sunday was the day of the funeral. There were no happy faces in St Petersburg.Everyone in the village was in the small church.Aunt Polly, Sid, Mary and Joe Harper's family were all dressed in black. The Reverend said many kind words about the three boys. The boys' families cried and cried.Becky Thatcher cried.Everyone cried a lot.Suddenly there was a noise at the church door. The Reverend looked up and stopped speaking.Everyone in the church turned around and looked.Their mouths opened. The three dead boys slowly walked into the church.Tom was first, then Joe and then Huck. There was great silence for a moment. Then Aunt Polly, Mary and Joe's mother ran to the boys. They kissed Tom and Joe.Aunt Polly cried and then she laughed. Poor Huck did not know what to do.No one kissed him.He started moving away but Tom stopped him."Aunt Polly, it's not right. Somebody must be happy to see Huck," said Tom. Chapter Sixteen - The boys find turtle eggs on the sandbar that afternoon and eat fried eggs for supper and for breakfast the following morning. They swim and have wrestling matches and a mock circus on the beach. Chapter Seventeen - Back in the village, everyone remains in mourning. Becky Thatcher regrets her coldness toward Tom, and their schoolmates remember feeling awful the last time they saw the boys. On Sunday, everyone gathers for the funeral. Read by John Greenman
Chapter Three - In this chapter, Tom first sees Becky Thatcher. To attract her attention, he begins a series of outlandish and absurd "show-offs" to little avail. At supper that night, when Aunt Polly is out of the room, Sid accidentally breaks the sugar bowl. Chapter Four - Tom prepares for Sunday school with the help of his cousin Mary. As Tom struggles halfheartedly to learn his Bible verses, Mary encourages and entices him with the promise of “something ever so nice.” Tom then dresses for church, and he, Mary, and Sid hurry off to Sunday school, which Tom loathes. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (published 1876) is a very well-known and popular story concerning American youth. Mark Twain's lively tale of the scrapes and adventures of boyhood is set in St. Petersburg, Missouri, where Tom Sawyer and his friend Huckleberry Finn have the kinds of adventures many boys can imagine: racing bugs during class, impressing girls, especially Becky Thatcher, with fights and stunts in the schoolyard, getting lost in a cave, and playing pirates on the Mississippi River. This was the first novel to be written on a typewriter. Chapter One - The novel opens with Aunt Polly scouring the house in search of her nephew, Tom Sawyer. She finds him in the closet, discovers that his hands are covered with jam, and prepares to give him a whipping. Tom escapes over the fence. Tom comes home at suppertime to help Aunt Polly's young slave, Jim, chop wood. Aunt Polly asks Tom about skipping school. Tom explains his wet hair by saying that he pumped water on his head. Chapter Two - On Saturday morning, Aunt Polly sends Tom out to whitewash the fence. Jim passes by, and Tom tries to get him to do some of the whitewashing in return for a a marble. Jim almost agrees, but Aunt Polly appears and chases him off. A little while later, Ben Rogers, another boy Tom's age, walks by. Tom convinces Ben that whitewashing a fence is great pleasure, Ben agrees to give Tom his apple in exchange for the privilege of working on the fence. Over the course of the day, every boy who passes ends up staying to whitewash, and each one gives Tom something in exchange. By the time the fence has three coats, Tom has collected a hoard of miscellaneous treasures. Read by John Greenman
A few years ago Jane and I were in Hannibal, the home town of Mark Twain. We did all the touristy stuff -- the Becky Thatcher house, the Tom Sawyer cave. We also went into a book store where I saw the autobiography of Mark Twain. This was not a typical autobiography. he tried that and stopped. Then he decided to invent a new form of autobiography. He would just write individual segments, often just 4-6 pages long. He threw those into a box, in no particular order. His instructions to the person who was executor of his estate was to put these together into a book but NOT in chronological order. The result is wonderful. I have a few more things to tell you along the way, about visiting his house in Hartford, about some things he wrote, but the best part of this podcast is a reading of his story about needing $3.00, and meeting a beautiful dog with beautiful eyes. Well, listen away. I think you will like this.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain audiobook. One of the most famous incidents in the book describes how Tom persuades his friends to do a boring, hateful chore for him: whitewashing (i.e., painting) a fence.

The kids escape the cave! Weirdly they run into Joe down there and Tom is pretty casual about it. Go on, read it yourself: https://bookshop.org/books/the-adventures-of-tom-sawyer-original-and-uncensored/9781074561192Visit https://nuzzlehouse.com for show info.
The kids keep an eye on the “spaniard” and “Injun Joe” for a few days then Becky Thatcher comes back! So Tom pretty much forgets about the murderer and the gold to go hit on her. A big party is planned and Huck and Becky wind up missing- which kind of takes the shine off the fact that Huck saved a woman’s life.Go on, read it yourself: https://bookshop.org/books/the-adventures-of-tom-sawyer-original-and-uncensored/9781074561192Visit https://nuzzlehouse.com for show info.

Geoffrey’s Junebug teammate, member of the comedy band The Whiskey Mountain Way, and audio engineer for Golden Age Radio, Kate Hardly joins us to talk about a movie that scarred her as a child and gave a friend of hers lasting PTSD: The Adventures of Mark Twain!Image Description: A still from The Adventures of Mark Twain, in which a terrifying mask (that vaguely resembles Mark Twain) on a stick hovers in empty space above / in front of an armored, headless body, whose hand is holding a cigar. Here’s the … not exactly a summary … that Kate sent us before rewatching:“I am terrified at the prospect of rewatching The Adventures of Mark Twain. This feature length film from 1985 is a bad trip made entirely out of clay. I remember having a very uncomfortable feeling while watching it, as if the television was connected to something unholy and I were it's unwilling victim. In fact, I had repressed all memory of having seen it until a friend confided in me about their resulting PTSD. Then it came flooding back. The movie was real.I think it was Christmas. It was late in the day, perhaps even night. The adults were making merry and my cousins and I were left alone with a television to keep us occupied. Little did they know that tv had a black box connected straight to hell. Or maybe I was alone at home when I saw it? Perhaps this movie reached out and found me many times. I really don't remember the details, only that it felt wrong. The message it gave was this: You don't matter. Your life does not matter. God cannot save you from a painful, meaningless existence and an excruciating death, after which no one will mourn you. If you tell an adult what you've seen here they will not believe you. They'll call you a liar and punish you for it. This is our secret. Keep it, or else terrible things will happen. But none of it will matter. There's also Mark Twain, who maybe kidnapps Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher. They used to be real children but now they're trapped in the clay world. Huck, too. There is a trippy checkered floor that is also evil. Ok, now that I've told you everything I can remember I'm going to look for a clip of this thing....Oh. My. God.I have to call my therapist.”Was Kate right? Yes! But also she missed a good deal of the plot, so we have a pretty wild journey through this, the first Claymation animated feature, and the one which gave Claymation its name! We also learn that Geoffrey has actually watched a live production of Starlight Express in London(!!!), and talk a bunch about fanfiction, including the post-apocalyptic science fiction story Julia wrote based on the children’s bedtime classic, Goodnight Moon. Jessica Lawson and I chat about writing and the strange quirks of being a writer. We discuss each of her books, where she gets her ideas, and her best writing practices. She doesn't sing a song about lost socks, alas, but she does talk about her editorial process and her best tips for successful school visits. Jessica and I have been online friends for years and it was a pleasure to finally have a conversation in person. I learned a lot and you will as well. Jessica Lawson enjoys living in Pennsylvania, where she and her family spend weekend hours hanging at the local orchard, pretending to be on Top Chef Junior, building with magnet blocks, making up new holidays, and reading plenty of books. She likes pizza. A lot. She is the author of The Actual and Truthful Adventures of Becky Thatcher, a book that Publishers Weekly called “a delightfully clever debut” in a starred review, and Nooks and Crannies, a Junior Library Guild Selection and recipient of three starred reviews. Her 3rd book, Waiting for Augusta, won the Colorado Book Award for Juvenile Fiction, and was also a Junior Library Guild Selection. Of her latest book, Under the Bottle Bridge, School Library Journal says: "Beautifully written, with vivid characters, this exploration of family and friendship shines from the first page." She fell in love with storytelling at an early age, and is a sucker for Roald Dahl, Maurice Sendak, Linda Sue Park, RL LaFevers, Charles Dickens, Karen Cushman, Barbara Park, Amy Tan, Maryrose Wood, Barbara Cooney, Anne Ursu, Christopher Paul Curtis, Gail Carson Levine, Rita Williams-Garcia, Arnold Lobel, Isabel Allende, Sharon Creech, Eva Ibbotson, Shannon Hale, Maeve Binchy and many, many, many other wonderful authors and illustrators. She writes middle grade fiction, lots of to-do lists, and songs about lost socks. MiddleGradeNinja.com JessicaLawsonBooks.com

Valentines Day had everyone thinking about it, but we got into a pretty substantive discussion about the difference between love stories and romances. Finally, different kinds of love, between different people emerge as our main theme. Nancy started out, however, by calling our attention to a recently published novel she found remarkable by an author she follows.“A God In Every Stone,” by Kamila Shamsie, is the story of a young English woman who goes on an archeological dig in what would become Pakistan just before WW1 just breaks out. Nancy says, “What we get in this wonderful, wonderful novel is a perspective on WW1 from the Indian soldiers who went to fight for the British and died in great numbers.” It is also a story of the beginnings of the fight for independence on the sub-continent. She says it opens up a period of history as only fiction can, bringing new insights and revealing the roots of our present turmoil in the struggles of the past. It is a challenging book for the way the story is told and for the subject matter, but she says it fabulous. Here are the books we talked about. Some are romances. Most are love stories. What do you think, what is the difference? “Gone With The Wind,” by Margaret Mitchell“Romeo and Juliet,” by William Shakespeare“Soulless” by Gail Carriger, a romance about a young woman who is rudely attacked by a vampire. Nancy loved it. “Astrid and Veronika,” by Linda Olson. Sharon says two women, one young, one old, share a love, but not a sexual love.“Me Before You,” by JoJo Moyes. A young woman takes care of a wheel-chair bound man. Nancy loved it because JoJo Moyes doesn’t give into the easy way out andturned what mighthave beenaromance into a love story.“Plainsong,” by Ken Haruf a love story between two old men and the young girl they care for.“Dancing Alone Without Music” by Larry Gildersleeve, who is a friend of Jenny’s. She says it’s an evolution of different loves.Diana Galbadon’s long and involved books. “Life After Life” by Kate Atkinson. Judy says it is about love within a family.“Boys In The Boat,” by Daniel James Brown. Judy said that what amazed her was the love of Mr. Pocock for the boats themselves and the young men in the boat. So now, when defined so broadly, what book isn’t a love story? “Angle of Repose,” by Wallace Stegner, in which Nancy asks, who loves whom? ( well, she said “who loves who,” but you know how autocorrect can be.) Another love story by this definition can be Stegner’s “Crossing to Safety.”“Still Alice,” by Lisa Genova“Cocoon of Cancer” An Invitation to Love Deeply,” by Abbe Rolnick with Jim Wiggins“Chocolat,” by Joanne Harris is Roz’s choice. That prompts Nancy to plug her other books, which she says don’t get the attention they deserve. She recommends “Gentlemen and Players.”“Like Water For Chocolate,” by Laura Esquivel“Bettyville,” by George Hodgman is the story of a son who leaves his life to take care of his 90 year old mother. Susie says it is funny and delightful.“Cold Mountain,” by Charles Fraser“Atonement,” by Ian McEwan“Love In The Time of Cholera,” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez“Love Again,” by Doris Lessing. Not about romantic or erotic love, but about the trembling between them says Elwyn. He also loves the episode in Tom Sawyer where he explores his passion of Becky Thatcher.“Infinity in the Palm of Her Hand,” by Giaconda Belli“Middlemarch,” by George EliotWrapping, we had shout outs for Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache mysteries, Dorothy Sayers’ romance between Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane and to get into the western genre, “Shane,” by Jack Shaefer about the love of a young boy for his father and the man who rides in to help.“Bridges of Madison County,” by Robert Waller, or “Fanny Hill,” by John Cleland, but now we are getting pretty far afield from love or even romance. These are but insubstantial flings, aren’t they?
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is set in the 1840's in the fictitious town of St. Petersburg, Missouri, where Tom lives with his deceased mother's sister, Aunt Polly, and his half-brother, Sid. After Tom plays hooky from school, he is made to whitewash Aunt Polly's fence as punishment, but persuades his friends to do it for him. Tom's real trouble begins when he and Huck Finn witness a murder committed by Injun Joe. They swear to never tell, and the wrong man, Muff Potter, is accused of the crime. Tom, Huck, and a friend run away to be pirates, but become aware that the whole town is searching for their bodies. Each of the boys make an appearance at their own funerals, where they are greeted with open arms. As Muff Potter's trial begins, Tom is overcome with guilt and testifies against Injun Joe, who quickly flees the courtroom. Later, on a class field trip to a cave, Tom and his love interest, Becky Thatcher, get lost. As they run out of food and candles searching for a way out, Tom and Becky come upon Injun Joe, who is using the cave as a hideout. Tom finds a way out just as the search party is giving up. The town rejoices and Judge Thatcher, Becky's father, has the cave sealed, unknowingly trapping Injun Joe inside where he starves to death.
From BCB... http://bestofbcb.org/wu-138-fish-derby-april-25/ It's all about Huck Finn and great family fun! For about 40 years (no one remembers for sure), the BI Sportsmen's Club has organized an annual Huck Finn and Becky Thatcher fish derby for kids under 14 years old. In this podcast, Alan Kasper, club president, describes this beloved community event: families bring their kids to fish, and in the spirit of Huck Finn, the kids are only allowed to use the cane fishing rods (loaded up with worms) provided by the Sportsmen's Club. Prizes are given for various fish-related criteria, and the competition is serious. The kids can take their fish home in buckets, bags or whatever they've got with them (might be good to bring a container). Each year, the Fish & Wildlife Dept. donates between 350-400 fish with which to stock the pond, so there are plenty of fish for everyone. Imagine seeing the joy of a 5-year old catching her first fish! Families can park along the side of Sportsmen's Club Rd or up in the club parking lot. This I Love Jazz with Don Wolff episode is based in the Sheldon Concert Hall and Art Galleries in St. Louis. Performance and interview guests are St. Louis native Don Cunningham and his wife Alicia. For this program, they perform Big Band, Latin, and classic jazz with a large ensemble. Follow the I Love Jazz cameras as we take a trip down the Mississippi on the paddlewheeler Becky Thatcher and explore the history of music on the river - yesterday and today. From Don Wolff's archives, our Jazz Gem features a rare performance from Bob Wilber's Sidney Bichet Legacy Band with Pug Horton. You'll meet our newest "Rising Star of Jazz" -Leo Davis. And in our educational segment, Building Blocks of Jazz, Phil Dunlap teams up with SIUE professor Rick Haydon in part two of the "Rhythm Guitar in Jazz".
Back at home, Tom shows uncanny insight about events that took place while he was supposedly "away." Aunt Polly questions his good nature, Becky Thatcher rejects and accepts him, and school comes to a resounding close for the summer.
for Realtors, Used Cars and Free Puppies Real estate is a business involving mountains of money. It's also a business in crisis. Put these together and it means ka-ching if you know how to make the phone ring for realtors. You ought not be surprised that I know how to make phones ring. What should surprise you is that I'm willing to tell you… for free. Here's how to Make Magic in real estate: 1. Ask the realtor to show you an unusual house. More often than not, you'll want the house to be in the price range an average person could afford. 2. What makes this house quirky or weird or memorable isn't really important. What matters is that it has something distinctive about it. 3. Visit the house. Ponder the distinctive feature until it triggers the memory of a cultural icon. 4. Pull the icon into your ad copy. Radio works best, but this technique also works well in newspaper classifieds. 5. Always mention the price of the house. 6. Never mention the square footage, the number of bedrooms, or the address. Let's say it's a white, frame house with a front porch, the kind that blanketed America during the first half of the 20th century. Older parts of every town are littered with these. The only thing this house has going for it is a giant tree in the front yard. ANOUNCER: Telling your friends how to find your new house will be easy.FEMALE ON PHONE: “We're the house with the giant tree in the yard. You can't miss us.”ANNOUNCER: That big tree is begging for a tire swing. Will yours be the family that finally hangs one from that massive branch? Add a white picket fence and it's the house of Tom Sawyer. Here comes Becky Thatcher down the sidewalk. This is the house of a Norman Rockwell image. In a minute you'll see Andy and Barney cruise past in the patrol car. Aunt Bee is making a pie in the kitchen. This is a house for celebrating Thanksgiving and Christmas. A home to come home to. And just two hundred and nine thousand dollars makes it yours. Want to see it? Call Kathryn Nelson at 555-5555. She's not one of those big hair, lots-of-jewelry realtors. She's regular people.REALTOR: Kathryn Nelson. Small hair, modest jewelry. 555-5555Okay, that was easy. Let's try again. This time it's a house begging for a remodel. The appliances are a weird color, the sinks and bathtubs are pink porcelain and the bathroom tile is checkerboard black and white. The light fixtures are strange. ANNOUNCER: Did you ever see Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's? Distinctive. Avant-guarde. Sophisticated. Straight out of The New Yorker magazine. This is the house of Holly Golightly. Ridiculously retro. Definitely not for everyone. But absolutely adorable. And it has a driveway built for a sportscar. There's only one and this is it. Two hundred and twenty-nine thousand. And the shrubbery! I'm not even going to try to describe it. Listed by Harvey Rich Realtors, of course. Harvey Rich has all the interesting houses.REALTOR: Boring houses are for boring people. Harvey Rich has interesting houses. And I'd love to show you this one. 555-5555 Harvey Rich. Now let me make this clear: The goal is to make the phone ring. Whether or not the caller buys the advertised house is unimportant. The realtor just wants to meet folks who are thinking of moving. He or she wants a shot at listing their current home. If the respondent doesn't like the home you featured, the realtor will happily drive them to see some other ones. NOTE: If you yield to temptation and add any of the typical “3 bedroom, two bath” real estate language, it'll kill response deader than a bag of hammers. The Cognoscenti will recognize this technique as a variation of Being Perfectly Robert Frank: 1. Selected Details. 2. Interesting Angle. 3. What to Leave Out. This is...
