You probably don't think about the harp very often, but Brandee Younger is here to change that. She's part of a new generation of harpists, bringing the instrument to contemporary music while also honoring the heritage of harpists of the past, particularly Dorothy Ashby, who elevated the form from the '50s through the '80s. Younger's harp can be heard on tracks by Alessia Cara, Pete Rock, Jane Monheit, Ravi Coltrane, and a mix of other artists across the musical spectrum. She's also an artist in her own right with several solo albums, most recently Brand New Life, where she reworks some of Ashby's songs and takes on a Stevie Wonder song called "If It's Magic." On this episode, Younger talks about her musical journey (including how she discovered the harp and who lugged it around) and breaks down some songs on the album. http://brandeeyounger.com/ https://www.songfacts.com/ https://www.facebook.com/songfacts https://twitter.com/Songfacts http://pantheonpodcasts.com/ https://twitter.com/pantheonpods Hosted and Edited by Corey O'Flanagan https://twitter.com/ofe1818 https://www.instagram.com/coreyofe/ corey@songfacts.com Songfacts Podcast Spotify Playlist https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3IThMW5yB8XnFh5cS2gTxR?si=KAhiqWRcSIy5uxb2sZPFTA This show is part of Pantheon Podcasts. A master of her craft, Jane Monheit's stunning interpretations of the American Songbook, classic pop songs, and traditional Latin / bossa nova tunes have mesmerized fans the world over. Her ability to honor timeless material with her well-honed vocal performances has resulted in several of her albums going to #1 on the Billboard Jazz Charts. Coming from a family of professional singers and musicians, Jane says she realized at the age of 4 that jazz was the thing she wanted to do and told us her main influences were Ella Fitzgerald and Judy Garland. With the start of the holiday season, we talk to Jane about her new release ‘The Merriest' [out on Club 44 Records and now streaming ]. It's her second holiday album, following 2005's ‘The Season'. On ‘The Merriest', Jane continues her tradition of imbuing timeless music with her unique vocal and jazz stylings through a personally handpicked collection of festive favorites. We also talk about her album ‘Come What May'. Released in 2021, it was her first in five years, and as Broadway World noted in their review “highlights her fresh takes on first-rate standards, with deft interpretations honed after years on the road.”
Ken Kessler from the Sounds of Christmas talks to Jane Monheit about her new Christmas album "The Merriest". She talks about this project, which was in the works for years. She also talks about some of her favorite Christmas singers and songs, and hints that there might be more Christmas music coming from her in the not-too-distant future (maybe)!Jane's website: https://www.janemonheitonline.com/Get an autographed copy directly from Jane: https://www.janemonheitonline.com/store/p/the-merriest

On this episode of the Jazz Transcription Clinic Podcast Mirko Guerrini interviews the guest jazz doctor: Roberta Gambarini Roberta Gambarini was born in Turin, Italy, where she attended jazz concerts, clubs, and festivals with her parents. Her father played the saxophone, and she grew up hearing jazz in the house and learning by listening to records. Her first instrument was clarinet when she was 12, then piano. When she was 18, she moved to Milan to pursue a career as a vocalist. In Milan, she worked in radio and television without making progress on her ambition. Saxophonist Joel Frahm is one of the warmest people I know AND he has one of the warmest tenor sounds to boot. I first became aware of his immense musicality when hearing him on the albums of vocalist Jane Monheit and I've been smitten with his lyricism ever since. His latest release, “The Bright Side”, features a chordless trio with bassist Dan Loomis and drummer Ernesto Cervini. The album came out on Anzic Records in June 2021 and is a joyous showcase for Joel's creativity and his longstanding collaboration with Dan and Ernesto. Joel was kind enough to take my call from his new home of Nashville. We chatted about the album, the importance of melody, and he recounted hearing Jane for the first time-one of those “I knew her back when” fairytales. Show Notes: Tracklisting: - Beeline - Cheek to Cheek - Thinking of Benny - Blued Dharma - Boo Dip Dip The Bright Side is out on Anzic Records now. Joel will appear with Ernesto Cervini's "Turboprop" at The Rex in Toronto, Ontario, Canada from 8-11 December 2021 Theme music by The Respect Sextet Follow The Jazz Session on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook Subscribe to The Jazz Session's YouTube Channel Support The Jazz Session by becoming a member at Patreon.
