This week on Finding Your Bliss we have a show devoted to music. Educator, marketing genius and artist, Dr. Amara Pope is here to talk about how she helps champion representation in the Canadian music industry, which is beautifully exemplified in her amazing TEDx Talk. With over a decade of experience in marketing, brand management, and digital media across several industries, Dr. Amara Pope also holds a Ph.D. in Media studies from Western University. Her Ph.D research is fascinating. It's focused on the intersections of media, culture and race, particularly within popular music and digital media. Dr. Pope also earned a Master's in Communication Studies from Wilfrid Laurier University and completed a Joint Honours Bachelor's Degree in Rhetoric and Professional Writing and Fine Arts with a Digital Media Specialization from the University of Waterloo. She is dedicated to amplifying underrepresented voices in Canada and fostering diversity, which as mentioned, is beautifully exemplified in her TEDx Talk. She has delivered impactful lectures at prestigious universities, such as the University of Southern California, and more. She has also spoken at conferences and served as a guest panelist all across Canada. Her insights have been featured in notable media outlets including CTV, CBC, iHeart Radio, Global Television, NBC and others. When not immersed in her professional pursuits, Dr. Pope enjoys weightlifting and experimenting with oil, acrylic and mixed-media painting. Also on the program, we have Juno Award-winning R&B, Soul, and Pop singer Sean Jones. As he puts it, “It's been a long time…but it always feels good to come home.” Sean Jones is referring to the kind of '90s inspired R&B music he made with the highly successful boy band, "In Essence." The group rose to fame in the early 90's with the hits, "Friend Of Mine," "IE IE" and "You Will Never Find" and received worldwide recognition for their ability to combine Rap, Pop, and R&B with exciting performances. In 2004, "In Essence" won a Juno Award for their debut album before breaking up in 2006. Post break up, Jones took an interest in songwriting and producing. Over the next ten years, he put together a catalogue of songs that stretched in genre from soft rock to Motown Revival. It was his take on soulful classics however, that would eventually land him a unique and incredible opportunity to showcase his skills. In 2015, Sean became the first artist to secure a solo summer residency at the historic Casa Loma in downtown Toronto. The Monday night revue titled “Soul In The City” gave Jones and his nine-piece band, "The Righteous Echo," the chance to showcase his original songs, as well as their take on popular old school hits. The show was also a wonderful opportunity to give emerging artists a stage to share their talents. “Soul In The City,” through Jones' hard work and tenacity, grew to 1000+ people every Monday night. The overwhelming success he had with that residency led to WestJet, Canada's second-largest airline, handpicking Sean to create a musical experience for the passengers aboard their flights. For the project titled, “The WestJet Boarding Sessions,” Jones recorded new versions of classic Canadian hits, such as “These Eyes” by The Guess Who, “The Weight” by The Band, and “Angel” by Sarah McLachlan and flew across Canada to interview some of these cherished musical icons. His latest album, has a familiar sound that many have not heard from him in almost 15 years. Jones' most recent album, “Weekend Lover” features a set of songs that are reminiscent of 90's R&B, something Jones is very familiar with. Says Jones: “Growing up, my parents played all the classics, Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, The Supremes…the list goes on and on. I loved all of it then and to this day. However, the music of the late '80s and '90s is what sparked my interest in performing. There was something about the musical energy of that time. The R&B/Pop son ...

Witness to Yesterday (The Champlain Society Podcast on Canadian History)
Larry Ostola talks to Matthew Reeve about his book, Casa Loma: Millionaires, Medievalism, and Modernity in Toronto's Gilded Age. Leading architect E.J. Lennox designed Casa Loma for the flamboyant Sir Henry Pellatt and Mary, Lady Pellatt as an enormous castellated mansion that overlooked the booming metropolis of Toronto. The first scholarly book dedicated to this Canadian landmark, Casa Loma situates the famous “house on the hill” within Toronto's architectural, urban, and cultural history. Casa Loma was not only an outsized home for the self-appointed “Lord Toronto” but a statement of Canada's association with empire, an assertion of the country's British legacy. During and after the Pellatts' occupation, Casa Loma was a major landmark, and it has since infiltrated the iconography and collective memory of the metropolis. The reception of Casa Loma, variously loved and abhorred by Torontonians, reflects many of Toronto's major aspirations and anxieties about itself as a modern city. Across ten chapters, this book charts the history of Casa Loma from the purchase of the estate atop Davenport Ridge in 1903 and its construction from 1906, through to its sale and the dispersal of its contents in 1924, its subsequent life as a hotel, and finally its transformation into one of the city's major entertainment venues. Casa Loma brings to light a wealth of hitherto unpublished archival images and documentation of the house's visual and material culture, weaving together a textured account of the design, use, and life of this unique building over the course of the twentieth century. Arend and Thomas share details from their recent trips to Toronto, Canada and Lanai, Hawaii and all the fun in between. Thomas made a new bff who cooked him a romantic dinner then went scuba diving for mermaids. Arend did shots of maple syrup in Canada, snuck into some of the closed areas at Casa Loma, and had an unforgettable experience switching seats on the plane with a women and her baby. As a side note, this episode was recorded just before the fires that took place in Maui, which made it crazy to hear about the fires as I was editing this episode. Our hearts and donations have since gone out to the victims and those impacted and we encourage our small handful of listeners to do the same. That said, if you're a fan of this podcast, be sure to share it with your friends and help it grow and we'll keep bringing you more entertaining content. Thanks for listening.
This episode is about the great mansion on Davenport Hill and the man who built it. Casa Loma is one of the most distinctive buildings in Toronto, but there's more to this story. It helped to launch swing music and it once housed a top-secret lab. Learn more about it on this week's episode of Muddy York. Happy Spooky Wednesday, our loves! This week we've got a classic haunting and a cursed soul for your enjoyment. Kala talks about Casa Loma in Toronto, Ontario. This mansion/castle was built in the early 1900s. The only tragedy that seems to have befallen this place is that it's original owners couldn't afford the upkeep, but that hasn't prevented the place from being haunted. A woman in white, a handsy man in the tunnels, and a tape-stealing lady of the house are just some of the ghosts you may encounter here. And Brittany tells us the tale of Robert Johnson. He was a blues singer/songwriter who… well… sucked. Until he didn't. He became an inspiration for many with his music, but where did this skill come from? Was it practice? Or was it a deal with the devil? We may never know.

You will see the CN Tower (far away, though), St. Clair Avenue, Spadina Road, Weston Road, and Davenport Road. I used self-talk to build a porn-free identity. I also make sure to say to myself words that instill good qualities in me: strength, discipline, and hard work ethic. I also recommend using my “15 Minutes of Sacrifice” technique: Imagine yourself feeling unhappy or bored or lonely. And you want to escape this feeling using fapping. But how long does it last? On average, 15 minutes. What happens after that? You feel even worse than when you started. And you have that bad feeling on average for 2 hours. So that's 15 minutes of pleasure vs. 2 hours of pain. That said, let's look at an alternative scenario. Again, you feel unhappy or bored and want to escape. But this time, you spend the same 15 minutes not doing PMO. You choose to be strong. I know that is difficult… and painful. But afterward, you get 2 hours of pleasure because you feel good about making the right choice. That's 15 minutes of pain vs. 2 hours of pleasure. When you compare these two options, the choice is obvious. So next time you feel the fapping urge set a timer for 15 minutes and use positive self-talk. ---------------------------------------------- COMPANION BLOG POST https://romanmironov.com/no-pmo/ ---------------------------------------------- OTHER VIDEOS YOU MIGHT LIKE:

On this week's episode, Canadian Musician Editor-in-Chief Mike Raine shares two fun and fascinating conversations, which are also quite different. So, first up, Mike chats with 604 Records Founder Jonathan Simkin alongside one of his young and rising stars, pop singer-songwriting Molly Annelle. Jonathan signed Molly to 604 when she was just 14-years-old and they recount the unlikely way that it happened. Molly, who is now 18 and studying the music industry at Ryerson University on top of releasing a new album, tells her story and what it has been like learning and navigating the industry at such a young age, and being mentored by other artists who've been through it before. By talking about Molly's journey in music, she and Jonathan both share a lot of insights into the music business, the label/artist relationship, growing up and evolving creatively, and a lot more. Then, Mike's second conversation today is with one Toronto's favourite sons of R&B, Sean Jones. After weathering a serious health scare that threatened to ruin his singing career, he came back better than ever with his new album, Weekend Lover. The album sees Sean return to his first musical love, ‘90s R&B. Of course, he first became known as a member of the Juno-winning ‘90s R&B group, In Essence. Since going solo, be built very loyal following with his beloved, must-see residency at Toronto's Casa Loma with the show ‘Soul in the City.' He's also done a musical campaign with West Jet, launched a success acting career on the side, and balances it all with parenthood. So, we know you'll love this wide-ranging and insightful conversation.
In this edition the Golfi Real Estate Show - Hamilton Edition, Rob Golfi from REMAX Escarpment Realty, shares the latest news about real estate in Hamilton, Burlington and Niagara. Also, what are the rules around buying and selling a 'stigmatized' house? And renowned Intuition Expert and Psychic Medium Lynn Nicholls stops by to chat about haunted houses and offers tips on how to deal with unwanted 'guests' in your home. This episode is dedicated to our Canadian listeners! We love Toronto and can't wait to visit post-COVID. In this episode we discuss some of our favorite haunted locations like the Christie Mansion, Casa Loma, Black Creek, and the Elgin & Winter Garden Theater.
People are fascinated by haunted places. Why are houses or places haunted? And who haunts them? Are there ghosts who haunts? Are they friendly or do they want to harm you? There are a lot of unanswered questions or tales about these phenomenas. For thousands of years we have been told stories about haunted places and people. Today, we hear the same old tales and some new ones. The future will bring more stories not yet written about houses that are not yet haunted. Do you think ghosts exist? I think that they probably do exist but I also think that a lot of supposedly haunted places are not haunted. Some people exaggerate when narrating stories of haunted places. I have experienced a haunting but I try to keep an open mind about haunting and ghosts. In this episode, I will be discussing haunted places like the Raymond Hall, Lizzie Borden House, Casa Loma, Tower of London, Winchester House and many other places. If you like haunted places or related stories, you will love this episode. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/terry-rakhra/message
The Gene Kardos Orchestra was a busy and frequently recorded band in the early 1930's - based at the Gloria Palast in the Bronx, they were one of the few white groups playing really hot dance music during the Depression years. While they recorded under Kardos' name (and a variety of pseudonyms) for Victor, Melotone and the ARC labels, it was featured under the name of their pianist, Joel Shaw for recordings made for the Crown label. These records were, if anything, hotter than the Kardos sides - featuring no well known Jazz players, this band was known to swing harder than its competition - Ben Pollack, Casa Loma and the Dorsey Brothers. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-clark49/support

This week it's time to say goodbye - kinda. We talk about end of year celebrations and how we have celebrated in the past. In SWAGGYK, we go back to the early days of Girl Guides in Canada and talk about the first Chief Commissioner, Lady Mary Pallett, and her home at Casa Loma. Finally, we talk about Tzena for our campfire. It's a song for dancing and celebrating, and one with some history! Don't worry, just because the guiding year is ending it doesn't mean that we are going anywhere for the summer! We will be back next week with a special Canada Day episode.
The music scene has been pretty busy this past week. While the world is burning all around us, some band members of pretty much all of your favorite bands have been (allegedly) exposed for using racial slurs and preying on underage girls. These types of stories are nothing new to the current music scene, so while we try to unpack everything that's going on, we also try to discuss the issue of hero worship when it comes to your favorite artists and when to draw the line when it comes to separating the art from the artists. We also share what we are listening to this week, Bilmuri, Bright Green, Casa Loma, and The Doors. #AustinCarlile #BuddyNielsen, #ChrisCarrabba #ChrisFronziak #CoryBrandon #Bilmuri #BrightGreen #CasaLoma #TheDoors --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theskinnywithmikeandadam/support

When I was a youngster my dad bought a three record set called The Big Bands. In it were songs that went along with a book by George T. Simon. Each record was devoted to a particular record label. The three labels were Decca, Columbia, and RCA Bluebird. It was a nice set with a lot of the hits from the big band era. I came across this set the other day and thought it would be great to hear all those great old songs again. This week we will be hearing many of the great bands that recorded for the Decca label. We'll be hearing from Jimmy Dorsey, Jimmie Lunceford, Bob Crosby, Casa Loma, Lionel Hampton and many others. I hope you enjoy all the bands this week that were part of the Decca family. Glen Gray, leader of the Casa Loma Orchestra, was born on June 7th 1906. The Casa Loma Orchestra was a popular American dance band active from 1927 to 1963. When the big bands went into decline after World War II the orchestra disbanded in 1947. Glen Gray started out playing saxophone in the band and then went on to become its leader. In 1956, he went back into the studio to record the first of what became a series of LPs for Capitol Records. I hope you enjoy this encore presentation from last year celebrating Glen with the Casa Loma Orchestra. Please visit this podcast at http://www.fgmiller.com/bbb/

This I Love Jazz program features the swing-dancing sounds of the 1920s-40s with Miss Jubilee and the Humdingers captured live at the historic Casa Loma Ballroom in St. Louis. We'll follow trumpeter Sean Jones to witness what a day in the life of a jazz performer, educator and band leader on the road is like. On Building Blocks of Jazz, Jazz St. Louis' Phil Dunlap explains the different styles of Big Band Music. For our Jazz Gem, we head to another Casa Loma Ballroom- this one in Canada for a rare 1964 performance featuring Duke Ellington and his Orchestra.
Our panel discusses the Toronto District School Board’s decision to allow cellphones in the classroom, the city’s decision to allow natives to set up tents in High Park and what council should decide to do with Casa Loma.
Ah, a romantic evening on the town... dinner and dancing at the swanky Casa Loma. Could anything be finer? Could an evening be more perfect? Could anything ever possibly be that simple? With an eccentric millionaire in the house, about to sign away the family fortune and disinherit a roomful of angry relations, there's almost sure to be... Murder In The Castle!
