One of the largest movements in U.S. History was The Great Migration, where an influx of African Americans left the South from 1910 - 1970 to the Midwest and northern states. During this time, approximately 6 million African Americans fled the Jim Crow South for better jobs, treatment, and opportunities. One of the cities of interest was St. Louis, especially for Louisiana and Mississippi residents. In this episode, Author and University of Missouri Professor Priscilla Dowden-White joins us to talk about how the Great Migration to the Gateway City was felt nationwide. A compelling discussion between Arnold Stricker, Mark Langston, and guest Andy Hahn, centered around Hahn's new book, 'Mapping St. Louis: A History of the Gateway City in 40 Rare Maps.' Key theme to listen for is the significance of maps as not just navigational aids but as critical historical records that encapsulate the story of St. Louis over the centuries. The dialogue begins with a humorous yet serious exploration of how modern technology has changed the way we navigate our world, alongside a nostalgic reflection on traditional map-reading skills that may be fading away.Hahn passionately shares his lifelong fascination with maps, which originated in his childhood home filled with historical artifacts and large maps. His narrative intertwines personal anecdotes with the broader historical context of St. Louis, showcasing how each of the 40 maps in his book serves as a snapshot of the city at different points in time. Listeners are taken on a journey from the city's founding days through significant developments, including the evolution of neighborhoods and the impact of socio-political changes that shaped the city's landscape. Hahn's insights illuminate the connection between geography and the lived experiences of St. Louisans, highlighting the importance of understanding one's environment. The episode also addresses the darker aspects of mapping history, particularly the use of maps in systemic segregation practices like redlining, which have had long-lasting effects on the city's demographics and cultural fabric. This discussion prompts listeners to reflect on the implications of historical maps and how they can inform our understanding of contemporary issues. By the conclusion of the episode, the hosts and Hahn leave the audience with a deeper appreciation for maps as powerful tools that tell the story of a city, its people, and their collective journey through time.Presentation and Book SigningsOctober 14, 6-7pm: Florissant Historical Society, Gittemeier HouseOctober 20, 3-6pm: Campbell House MuseumNovember 3, 2-3:30pm: Stupp Pavilion at Tower Grove ParkNovember 6, 12-1pm: Landmarks Association of St. LouisNovember 16, 2-3pm: Thomas Sappington House MuseumNovember 17, 2-4pm: Kern Pavilion a Lafayette ParkNovember 24, 2-4pm: Campbell House MuseumJanuary 11, 10-11:30am: Ulysses S. Join Mike as he takes a short trip to St. Louis, MO and one of the coolest shops around! Mike got a hot tip from Campus Comics Cast co-host, Shaad, about a hip comic shop practically in our backyard. That shop is Apotheosis Comics and Lounge, and if you thought going to comic shops couldn't get better, wait until you go to one with a bar serving your favorite beer or seltzer! Apotheosis Comics and Lounge is in the heart of St. Louis on South Grand Blvd., a beautiful and historic part of the city. The owner, Martin, is a busy guy...he's not only a successful business owner, he's heavily involved in the community, and still has time to be a comics fan! Martin has a gift of gab that made interviewing him an absolute pleasure. You are going to love the story he tells about...but wait...let's not spoil it. Let's just say it was worthy of being featured on a podcast called Dumbest Criminals. It's still a bagel under the "Regulation Wins" category for the Anaheim Ducks... 19 games in. The Ducks are approaching an NHL record after a pair of losses in the Gateway City. One game saw the Ducks get pulverized early on, and the other saw the Ducks give up an initial goal only 11 seconds into the game. JD Hernandez tries to make sense of it at first, but then enlists the help of Sarah Avampato (Calder Farmstead) to break down how bad the Ducks (and their affiliate) are doing right now. Betsy Cohen, Executive Director of the St. Louis Mosaic Project and author of "Welcome To the U.S.A. - You're Hired!" speaks with host Chris Lyon about the Gateway City's goal of becoming the fastest growing city in America for foreign born people.
For her day job, Sarah Arnosky Ko is vice-president of Greater St. Louis Incorporated, where she helps bring the business community together in the Gateway City. But in her spare time, she's known as Bricktator, a star player for the St. Louis-based Arch Rival Roller Derby team. Today, she joins Sandy and Sandra to give us all the lowdown on how roller derby works, what drew her to it, and why the sport is growing in popularity around the globe. First up, Sarah tells us about the origins of roller derby, way back in the 1930s, and explains how the sport works, including how you score points and what a jammer is. She also shares some of her experiences of traveling for competitions and coaching, and talks about roller derby's global growth trajectory as a sport that seems to naturally intrigue people. That includes Sarah, and she shares the story of how she got drawn into roller derby after watching a match and becoming fascinated by the powerful women playing it. She also gives us some inner details about roller derby, including the significance of the skaters' names, how they communicate on the rink, and how they deal with risks and injuries. And, for those who, like Sarah, find themselves interested in becoming a skater, Sarah explains the training newcomers undergo, emphasizes the welcoming atmosphere roller derby provides, and reassures Sandra that there's no upper age limit to becoming a skater! And finally, Sarah tells us what she and the team do to psyche themselves up for, and wind down, from a tournament (and lets us in on roller-derby afterparties as well as the secret of zombies-versus-robots competitions). The Finer Details of this Episode: The mechanics of roller derby Roller derby's growth Sarah's travels with the sport Skater names, secret codes, rules, and risks How to get started in roller derby How the team psyches up and winds down Quotes: “It takes everyone on the team to score points because it is hard. You are literally throwing your body in between other bodies, trying to get past them or to stop them. And so it really is something where you have to be fearless in order to really be successful in this sport.” “One of the favorite places I never expected to go was a city in Spain called A Coruña, which is in northern Spain. It's green, it was beautiful, and it was on the ocean. And we really got to swim in the ocean after games as our, quote, ice bath, you know, because it was a little bit cold. But every time we go someplace, we really get to experience a little bit of what it has to offer.” “The speech that you really get is like, this is fun, we will be your family. And it's really not a matter of if but when you get hurt in some capacity, right? Like, we have people around you that can support you. But know that roller derby is rad. And we're excited you're here.” “At the end of the tournament, there's often an afterparty, and we always like to have themes for our clothing. And so, as a team, we'll go out all decked out in, like, outer-space outfits, or we've even had ‘dads on vacation,' where we have our cargo shorts and button-up shirts for our afterparty. So we really like to, you know, after we work hard, we go have some fun, too.” Links: The Adrenaline Zone Homepage Arch Rival Roller Derby Homepage
St. Louis is one of those cities where you can always discover something new. That's what this week's episode was all about. Many of us have seen the giant chess piece in the Central West End. In fact, did you know it's the world's largest? How that came to be is just one of the stories Shannon Bailey, curator of the World Chess Hall of Fame, shared with us on the episode. Chess has put St. Louis on the map, making it a destination for the world's best chess players, but also just those interested in the game. The WCHOF is celebrating 10 years in St. Louis this year and Bailey takes us on the journey of how it came to be in the Gateway City. And even if you're not a fan of chess, keep listening because this is about art, culture and bringing people to St. Louis to experience everything our city has to offer. The current exhibit, Mind, Art, Experience: 10 Years of Chess and Culture in Saint Louis celebrates all 50 exhibitions since the opening in 2011. It runs from now until July 17.
