On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with pianist, composer, improviser, label founder, and educator Kris Davis—one of the most forward-thinking voices in creative music today. Our conversation left me feeling genuinely energized. Kris approaches music with a rare combination of curiosity, discipline, and fearless experimentation, and it was a joy to dig into how all of that shows up in her work.We start with what's immediately ahead for her: a trip to Hamburg to premiere a newly expanded big band version of a trio piece with the NDR Big Band. Kris shares the very real “composer panic” that comes with catching an engraving mistake right before rehearsal—one of those behind-the-scenes realities of composing that every musician can relate to.From there, we talk about festivals—especially Big Ears, which feels like its own musical universe—and dive into two major pillars of her work: prepared piano and large-form composition. Kris reflects on studying with pianist Benoît Delbecq, whose approach to prepared piano emphasized rhythm, individuality, and finding a personal sonic vocabulary. One of the highlights of our conversation is a deep look at her remarkable Solastalgia Suite, written for the Lutosławski Quartet after a commission through Poland's Jazz to Pad Festival. Kris talks about learning how to write for strings in real time and how the concept of **solastalgia—the grief you feel for your home while you're still living in it—**became the emotional core of the piece. We also zoom out into the bigger picture of her work: her leadership role alongside Terri Lyne Carrington at Berklee's Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice, and her decade-long journey building Pyroclastic Records, a label dedicated to supporting adventurous music and the artists creating it. At its heart, this conversation is about craft, community, curiosity, and the importance of taking creative risks on purpose.Key TakeawaysThe behind-the-scenes realities of composing for large ensembles—including last-minute engraving panic before a premiere. Why festivals like Big Ears create a unique ecosystem for creative music. How studying with Benoît Delbecq shaped Kris Davis's approach to prepared piano. The creative challenge of writing for string quartet for the first time. The emotional meaning of solastalgia and how it shaped the Solastalgia Suite.Kris's work at Berklee's Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice alongside Terri Lyne Carrington. How Pyroclastic Records has grown into an important platform for adventurous and forward-thinking music.Music from the EpisodeDiatom Ribbons — Kris DavisInterlude (from the Solastalgia Suite) — Kris DavisLife on Venus (from the Solastalgia Suite) — Kris DavisRun the Gauntlet — Kris DavisAbout the PodcastThe Bandwich Tapes is a long-form conversation podcast where host Brad Williams sits down with some of the most thoughtful musicians, composers, and artists working today. This is a long-lost Power Salad recording, Craig's vocal demo discovered in 2025 and augmented by Chris resulting in a typically Salady dystopian mess. Sort of a cousin to "In My Driverless Car" thematically, it further delves into what might be happening 11 years on from that recording, with Tesla and Waymo troubles happening around us in real time. Lyrics and vocal (!) by Craig, "I'm Not In Love" choir vocal sample, editing and production by Chris.
The Phoenix Chamber Music Society presents the Catalyst Quartet in concert, Saturday, March 14th at Camelback Bible Church in Paradise Valley. The group's cellist and founding member Karlos Rodriguez talked with KBACH's Greg Kostraba about the quartet's inception, their rich and varied career, how they decide upon their programs, and the upcoming concert inspired by their friendship with Paquito d'Rivera. Tickets for the performance are available at the Phoenix Chamber Music Society website.
This is about as political as I get, musically. (Also, I realize the irony in that pointing out someone else's biases inherantly states my own.)

A satirical song about the type of guy who joins ICE. I can't write a sincere song. I can't write a song that leads to any serious political change. But I can write a song that makes fun of these absolute dweebs. lyrics

Personally I never had any trouble being present, or taking part in the birth of my four children. In fact, I wouldn't trade the experience for anything, and would encourage any future fathers out there to be as much involved in the actual delivery as the mother and care givers will allow. That being said...there are a few of you, and you probably know who you are, who should never set foot in a delivery room. Recently, my nephews son was one of the later, who upon entering the delivery room was asked to sit on a chair in the back of the room, against the wall, Where, after viewing one of the final contractions promptly lost his breakfast, then... passed out! Thus!! the re-birth... if you will, of a song I originally recorded in the 90's for a friend of mine. And now,.. in 2026 for the rest of you to enjoy. From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above. Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here.Harp takes center stageKathy Kienzle is a retired principal harp of the Minnesota Orchestra. She's looking forward to the upcoming Bakken Ensemble performance where the harp gets to shine. This season Bakken Ensemble celebrates 30 years. The performance is 4 p.m. Sunday, March 1, at Westminster Hall in Minneapolis.Cheryl Losey Feder is the guest harpist, and Kienzle says this is a wonderful chance to hear her perform chamber music up-close, rather than with the full Minnesota Orchestra.Kathy is particularly looking forward to hearing André Caplet's “Conte Fantastique,” which she calls “extremely difficult and very, very fun to hear.”Kathy says: One of the reasons I really love this piece is people think of the heart as a very beautiful, soothing, pretty instrument. And this piece really looks at the dark side of the harp. It's based on a story by Edgar Allan Poe called “The Masque of the Red Death,” about a group of nobles who hole up in a castle and throw a masked ball while the populace dies of a plague, only to be killed off by a masked figure dressed as a plague victim.— Kathy KienzleA visionary's early years on stageBrianna Regan is a former stage manager and ongoing arts fan in Minneapolis. She has seen both Theatre Elision's current and previous productions of Grace McLean's musical “In the Green,” and she liked it even better this time. The musical is about the early years of Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179), a German Benedictine abbess, visionary, and composer whose writings spanned medical, natural history, philosophy, music and more. The 90-minute musical focuses on a young Hildegard's early years, when she entered the church after having visions. She is cloistered with an older nun, Jutta.Brianna describes the show: It's a small, five-person cast that really deals with how to be a woman in the world, how to deal with using your voice, speaking up, being present and how to heal from trauma. This time around, I really think it is even more relevant in our current political environment, as well as what we are dealing with here in Minnesota; it really hit me and gave me that kind of catharsis. The artists in the show are just absolutely incredible. I cannot say enough good things about their musical talents. It is a little bit of a weird musical, but I will say, from start to finish, the story pulls you in.— Brianna ReganChamber music in NisswaStephen Gurney of Bemidji is a retired English professor with a self-described “indefatigable love of classical music.” He and his wife plan to make the drive to Nisswa to see the Lakes Area Music Festival perform Mozart and Borodin. The concert is Sunday at the Lutheran Church of the Cross at 2 p.m. Saturday's performance at Pillsbury Castle in Minneapolis is sold out. The program contains three pieces of chamber music by Mozart, Dvorak and Borodin.Stephen offers some background on Borodin's “String Quartet No. 2 in D Major”:Stephen says: Borodin was one of the Russian five. These were five Russian composers who endeavored to express Russian folk music and even liturgical music in their in their works. Borodin was by trade a chemist, and actually contributed a great deal to the advance of organic chemistry, but the Second String Quartet is a pure love song from beginning to end. It was dedicated to his wife. It was written and given to her on one of their anniversaries.— Stephen Gurney

Last year at MarsCon I tried something a little different for my concert. Instead of doing my usual set with short bits of stand-up comedy between songs, I tried to make it more like a hip hop concert with minimal talking between songs and my "posse" on stage with me the whole time. My posse consisted of Shoebox of Worm Quartet and Insane Ian. The end result was a lot of fun and I'm hoping to do more shows like this. But since I had Shoebox on stage with me I decided to premiere the latest Stupid Rap Battles. This one features me as a three-legged dog, and Shoebox as a fancy cup of coffee. This was the end result. Chris Mezzolesta was the pre-recorded announcer. This recording is from the 2026 MarsCon Fundraiser Album available now at MarsConComedy.com. The legacy of this internationally renowned ensemble, innovators of the "jubilee" singing style which influenced the national sound of quartets in the black community before World War II. The most popular of the Jubilee quartets, the Golden Gate Quartet started singing as the Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet in the mid-'30s when they were students at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, VA. The membership included Willie Johnson (baritone and narrator), Henry Owens (first tenor) William Langford (second tenor), and Orlandus Wilson (bass). Their harmonies became very sophisticated, laced with a heavy dose of jazz and a Mills Brothers influence right down to their vocal imitation of instruments. In fact, next to the Mills Brothers, they were probably the best at the "sounding like instruments" technique. They built their reputation through performing on local radio shows and in churches. In 1937 the Gates signed to Victor's Bluebird affiliate and applied their unique jazz-swing sound to gospel titles like "Go Where I Send Thee," "The Preacher and the Bear," and "When the Saints Go Marchin' In." On Aug. 4, 1937, they recorded an amazing 14 songs in two hours at the Charlotte Hotel in North Carolina. They performed in the same year on NBC Radio's "Magic Key Hour." In June 1940, they recorded several sides with the legendary folk singer Leadbelly, released in 1941 on Bluebird's parent label, Victor. By now they had dropped the Jubilee portion of their name, presenting themselves strictly as the Golden Gate Quartet. Though their recorded repertoire from 1937 to 1940 includes mostly gospel and Jubilee songs, they did record two pop-jazz 78s: "Stormy Weather" and "My Prayer." One of the highlights of this period was a performance for President Franklin Roosevelt's inauguration, which led to a number of appearances at the White House at the request of Eleanor Roosevelt. In 1941 they moved to Columbia's Okeh affiliate, and their entire recorded output during the war years was on that label. The most successful of these records was a version of "Comin' in on a Wing and a Prayer" in 1943. Their biggest record success came in 1947 with the song "Shadrack," and in 1948 the group appeared in the RKO musical "A Song Is Born," starring Benny Goodman, Danny Kaye, and Louis Armstrong. In 1959 the Golden Gate Quartet moved to Paris and landed a two-year deal to perform at the Casino de Paris. While based in Europe, they recorded for EMI-UK, Pathe Marconi in France, and EMI-Germany, creating more than 50 LPs. Over the years the group amassed a travelogue of 76 countries performed in. One of the truly great vocal groups, the Gates were cited as an inspiration to many rhythm and blues groups of the era. 00:00 PAR Intro 00:18 NPR Wade In The Water Ep. 10: The Legacy Of The Golden Gate Quartet 58:43 JGH Commentary 01:04:14 PAR Outro #fba #freedmen #negro #blackamericanheritage #virginia #florida #npr #spiritualjubilee #negrospiritual #worldwar2 #blackamericanfreedmen #rap #1930s #thegoldengatequartet #blackhistory
A while back, I asked folks to suggest song titles, and I would write something based on the title alone. It was a fun expereiment, and maybe I should revisit it again. That said, it did yield this: one of the dumbest songs I've ever written (and honestly, a favorite of mine and Ben, my producer and co-writer of this melodical malady). This track of course comes from the Marscon 2026 Comedy Music Track Funraiser MP3 Album which you can purchase now to help cover the Hotel Room costs for this year's Comedy Music acts, and features almost 4 hours of live comedy music performances and other miscelaneous banter that more often than not features me, as I also emcee'd the event last year.

Dr. Sarcofiguy impersonates Phyllis Diller in a song that is an ode to yesteryear's "MY BOYFRIEND'S BACK AND THERE'S GONNA BE TROUBLE!". Alas, her boyfriend in this case? That amorous amphibian from the deep: THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON! THE LAGOON CREATURE FROM THE BLACK (IS ON THE ATTACK) by John Dimes Produced and Arranged by Craig Conley But with: THE SARCOFIGUY RAP by The Grave Mood Rings (Craig Conley and Michael Warwick)
I wrote Putin on a Bear after noticing how easily power turns into performance. Big egos, bigger symbols, and a world that sometimes feels more like political cosplay than leadership. The song stays light on purpose. I figured if things are already absurd, there's no need to shout. A raised eyebrow does the job. If it makes you laugh, hum along, or briefly wonder how we got here, that's enough for me. This is a small reminder that when authority starts demanding awe, laughter can still be an option. Blombird

This song is a love letter to Jim Hopper: small-town police chief, full-time dad, part-time monster decapitator, and walking OSHA violation in a Hawaiian shirt. It's got synths, keytar, mustache energy, and the unshakable belief that abs are optional if you punch Russians and glare at Demogorgons hard enough. Turn it up, eat your vitamins, and here's a public service announcement for you - don't mess with Jim.
