It's finally here! Fruits of the Smogberry Trees: The FuMP's Tribute to Dr. Demento is now available in the store, and this is the closing track. Members of The FuMP got together to write and record new verses for the all-time classic song "Shaving Cream" by Benny Bell, and got special permission to include Benny's own vocals in this song from a special appearance he made on The Dr. Demento Show in the 1970s. Music, background vocals, and production: Chris Mezzolesta Vocals and new lyrics (in order): Benny Bell, Insane Ian, Carrie Dahlby and Alexann, the great Luke Ski, Bonnie Gordon*, Tom Smith, Devo Spice, Carla Ulbrich, Worm Quartet, Power Salad** *Lyrics by Devo Spice **Lyrics by Benny Bell, mostly Special thanks to Joel Samberg.
Joel and Camden from the Dover Quartet meet Hattie Butterworth in Philadelphia to discuss their latest album, Woodland Songs, which places the music of Jerod Impichchaachaaha' Tate and Pura Fé alongside the Dvorak 'American' String Quartet in F Major. Though vastly different works in style, expression, and historical context, they share the common influence of music native to North America.
There are certain people whom we'd rather not interact with daily but must, usually not by our own choice. This is for them. From the album "Off Brand."
Hi. Spaff here. Some kids want to grow up to be President or cure cancer. My goal was to get a song on the Dr. Demento Show. I listened to it faithfully every Sunday night, often with headphones so my mom wouldn't overhear songs like "Making Love in a Subaru." In the early 2000s I somehow convinced Robert Lund, a Salt Lake radio personality, to record some of my song parody ideas, all of which I immediately sent to Dr. Demento. On November 28, 2004, he played "I Want Some Plastic Surgery for Christmas." I was giddy. Robert and I have since collaborated on over a hundred songs, and Dr. Demento has played a number of them. I remain giddy. So here's another. It's a tribute to Dr. Demento via a list of songs from the days he hooked me. (Needless to say, he has played countless more effing awesome comedy songs in the intervening years, some of which were created by the people reading this.) It's a parody of "Ripple," a song the Grateful Dead wrote and recorded in 1970, the year Barret Hansen became Dr. Demento. Pass the claret to me, Barret! May you forever stay demented. ~~~ CREDITS: Turns out Robert owns mandolins (plural) and has played them his whole life. Also he sang and played guitar and produced this recording. "Ripple" has lyrics by Robert Hunter and music by someone named Jerry Garcia. Dr. Demento brought all of these comedy songs to our attention, and the legendary titles listed here are the brain children of their various legendary parents. BUT I DID EVERYTHING ELSE.

The Disney+ "Star Wars" TV series titled "Andor" recently finished its 2nd and final Season to much well deserved critical acclaim. I, the great Luke Ski, a fan of the "Star Wars" franchise since the first movie was released when I was 3 years old, very much enjoyed this series set in the years leading into the events of the film "Rogue One", which itself was set leading into the events of the aforementioned 1977 movie. That said... ...there was something about this show that set it apart from other "Star Wars" movies and shows of the past / since, and something that happened in Season 2 (or more accurately didn't happen) that really underscored that difference. So I decided to write this sketch in which droid K-2SO asks Rebel Captain Cassian Andor an important question that I felt was left unanswered by the series. Editing, Mixing, and Mastering - Imperial Sound Supervisor Chris Mezzolesta Much love and respect to - Alan Tudyk, Diego Luna, Tony Gilroy, and the writers, cast, and crew of "Andor" PS: To Alan and Diego, if you ever wanted to take the script for this sketch (click the 'lyrics' button to find it) so you two could perform a reading of it live at a convention event or something, you have my permission and eager encouragement to do so. I also threw together a quick VIDEO for this sketch, which is here: https://youtu.be/gDgjf3wmnxY
This is a song I wrote in response to Ainsley Seago's suggestion that we needed a Schoolhouse Rock-style song and video about the work that insect taxonomists at the USDA do to keep America's natural resources safe.

We reconnect with local historian Steven Rogstad about his latest book "The Million Dollar Quartet and the Challenges of Oral Testimony." The title refers to four legendary musicians- Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis- who converged on a Sun Records studio in Memphis, Tennessee in 1956 for what turned out to be a spontaneous jam session .... some of which was recorded and ultimately shared with the world. In the book, Rogstad seeks to gain some clarity on what exactly happened on that memorable occasion- and how a serious historian goes about such a task.
In this episode, Phil and JF are joined by Meredith Michael—musicologist, podcaster, and Weird Studies production assistant—for a conversation about animal songs. The phrase is intentionally slippery. Are we talking about songs about animals, or songs by animals? Both, as it turns out. Beginning with three very different human compositions—The Beatles' “Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey,” Hovhaness's And God Created the Great Whales, and Björk's “Human Behavior”—the hosts discuss the roles animals play in human music, mythology, and mind. Along the way, they touch on Pink Floyd, the Beatles' trip to India, heroin addiction, the indeterminacy of singing and screaming, the messiness of inter-species communication, the discovery of whale song, the problem of (not) projecting humanness onto animals, the Book of Genesis, and the porous boundary between the human and non-human worlds. All that (and more) for two of the songs! Phil's pick will be explored in a forthcoming episode. Meredith Michael is a PhD candidate in Musicology at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. She is working on a dissertation about musical mythologies of outer space in the twentieth century. In her spare time she loves making art of all kinds, going for long walks, making friends with cats, and watching cartoons. Meredith hosts the Cosmophonia podcast with Gabriel Lubell. A kinky thing happened on my way to a Comic Con. I met the smooth-talking reprobate Kirk St. James, and we co-wrote this song. Luckily, cold showers are the norm this time of year anyway! Superheroes get all the glory, but fans need love too. Or maybe geeks just need to use a few superpowers of their own (that could get them arrested in public).

The so-called 'religious right' proves once again that it is neither (religious or right) by embracing the Big Ugly Budget Bill, demonizing immigrants, and countless other hallmarks of Trump's agenda. (I did a version of this song 7 years ago, but history keeps not only repeating itself but getting worse, so it was time for an update!)

Overall thoughts on last night's NBA Draft. Should Denver have tried to trade into the draft? Ranking each NFL division by quarterback. Does the AFC West have the top quarterback quartet of any division in the NFL? Are the quarterbacks in the AFC West more impressive or the head coaches? Broncos secondary - will Jahdae Barron be a better player than Bradley Roby was? Mike Shanahan vs. Mike Holmgren debate. Tune in to a Thursday edition of Hot Takes!
All I have are gargoyle friends.

This SPECIAL EPISODE introduces my new single “THE CUT OF THE KNIFE”. It's the last of the four new singles that I've released monthly beginning in March. The first was “Rough Rider”, the second was “Moon Shot”, and the third was “Day At The Races”.I wrote “The Cut Of The Knife as a kind of homage to Dave Brubeck, the revered American jazz pianist. His saxophonist, Paul Desmond, wrote a song called “Take Five”, and the Brubeck band recorded it in 1959 on their album “Time Out”. That tune has become the biggest selling jazz song of all time. It even became a big crossover hit on the radio. One of the things that made “Take Five” so cool was that it was written in an odd time signature, 5/4 time. So the song's title was a play on words about its time signature and it was also an inside musician's phrase telling the band to relax for five minutes before the next set.“The Cut Of The Knife” features an incredible Guest Artist on guitar solo - Kerry Marx, the Musical Director of the Grand Ole Opry band who has been a guest on this podcast. His credits include touring with Johnny Mathis, Olivia Newton-John and Don McLean, recordings with Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash, movie albums like “Finding Nemo”, and music awards shows like Billboard, CMA and the American Music Awards. And a shout out goes to two of my longtime Project Grand Slam band mates - Baden Goyo on keys and Joel E. Mateo on drums. Both play terrific solos on the new single. And Joel's drum solo is particularly meaningful because Joe Morello, Brubeck's drummer, played a memorable drum solo on “Take Five”.“The Cut Of The Knife” has been called “Elegant”, “Beautiful” and “A Wonder”!CLICK HERE FOR ALL LINKSCLICK HERE FOR THE OFFICIAL VIDEO ---------------------------------------------The Follow Your Dream Podcast:Top 1% of all podcasts with Listeners in 200 countries!Click here for All Episodes Click here for Guest List Click here for Guest Groupings Click here for Guest TestimonialsClick here to Subscribe Click here to receive our Email UpdatesClick here to Rate and Review the podcast—----------------------------------------ROBERT'S RECENT SINGLES:“DAY AT THE RACES” is Robert's single that captures the thrills, chills and pageantry of horse racing's Triple Crown.
