The great jazz guitarist and vocalist John Pizzarelli released his first album 40 years ago. It was called I'm Hip (Please Don't Tell My Father).  His father, by the way, was the great jazz guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, who passed away in 2020. Since the release of that album, John has toured the world and established himself as one of the great interpreters of the Great American Songbook. He's appearing at Keystone Korner here in Baltimore this weekend, and his sets will feature music from his latest release: Stage and Screen, which celebrates great music from Broadway and Hollywood.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's hard to believe that forty years have gone by since John Pizzarelli recorded his first record album (on vinyl). He has a delightful new collection drawn from movies and Broadway shows called Stage & Screen (Palmetto Records). It reaffirms our opinion that he is the most engaging jazz musician and entertainer working today. A guitar virtuoso, he learned his craft from his Dad, the late Bucky Pizzarelli, and carries with him great memories of music legends he met while growing up. John believes that good music should be entertaining, too; Leonard and Jessie heartily agree.

Evan Christopher: The Tradition is Eternally Modern

The Working Artist Project

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 26, 2022 49:12

In this weeks episode of the Working Artist Project, Darrian Douglas and Gregory Agid speak to clarinetist virtuoso, Evan Christopher Evan Christopher combines virtuosity, immaculate taste, and enthusiasm with a commitment to exploring the full range of possibilities in the New Orleans clarinet tradition. His highly personal brand of “contemporary, early jazz” strives to extend the legacies of early Creole clarinet heroes such as Sidney Bechet, Barney Bigard and Omer Simeon. Critics remarking on Christopher's dynamic expressiveness have coined his style “close-encounter music” (NEW YORK TIMES) and have called his respect for the music traditions of New Orleans, “a triumph, joining the present seamlessly to a glorious past.” (THE OBSERVER, UK). His journey on Clarinet Road began in 1994, when he left his native California to join the New Orleans music community. Diverse freelance work included gigs with musicians such as Al Hirt and veterans of Preservation Hall to funk and brass bands including the Nightcrawlers and Galactic. But in 1996, he left for San Antonio, Texas to appear nightly for nearly three years with the Jim Cullum Jazz Band and record several of their public radio programs, Riverwalk: Live from the Landing. When Christopher returned to New Orleans in 2001, his published research on the New Orleans clarinet style initiated pursuit of a Master's degree in Musicology at Tulane University. He began touring internationally and producing his “Clarinet Road” series of CDs (STR Digital). In August 2005, when Federal levees failed in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina decimating the city, Christopher left again for Paris at the invitation of the French Embassy's Cultural Services division, where he formed his group, Django à la Créole. This Europe-based quartet fused Gypsy Swing with Latin-tinged grooves of New Orleans and beyond and was distinguished for an acoustic intimacy paired with driving swing. Critics charmed by the group queried, “Is there a more graceful band at work at the moment?” (THE SUNDAY TIMES UK). Three CDs for Lejazzetal (London), in partnership with Frémeaux & Associés (Paris)—Django à la Créole (2007), Finesse (2010), and LIVE! (2014)—earned the group critical attention worldwide for its elegant character. As a composer, Christopher's original songs are the high point of acclaimed recordings including Delta Bound (Arbors, 2007) featuring pianist Dick Hyman, The Remembering Song (Arbors, 2010) featuring guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, his clarinet feature on the Grammy-winning New Orleans Jazz Orchestra's Book One (2012) and his latest Clarinet Road CD, Bayou Chant & Other Textures (STR Digital, 2016). In July 2010, he had the honor to debut his Treat It Gentle Suite with the Minnesota Orchestra, which was the first concerto written for clarinet with band in the New Orleans style. Evan Christopher began his musical training on clarinet at age 11. In high school, he received the Louis Armstrong National Jazz Award and was one of the first graduates of the prestigious Idyllwild Arts Academy. He continued studies at the University of Southern California and graduated with honors from California State University, Long Beach. A brief teaching stint at the University of New Orleans saw the creation of a New Orleans music ensemble that performed with guest mentors such as Lucien Barbarin and Marcus Roberts. Since 2008, having returned once again to New Orleans, Christopher actively advocates for the cultural workforce and music education. He frequently tours with and records as a guest with forward-looking artists, while performances under his own name are often complemented by workshops and educational and community outreach. Occasional columns about the music scene and New Orleans culture written for NolaVie.com, evidence Evan's passion for the city's indigenous traditions.

Larry Cantwell is from New Jersey and attended The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, in history, during the tumultuous late 1960's, when he left college to pursue a music career. He traveled in New England with Soul and Rock bands, then returned to New York, where he advanced his music studies. He took advantage of diverse programs and talent in New York,  while working in assorted one-man and club date bands. Influenced by Nat King Cole and Stevie Wonder, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, songwriter and composer LC Wells offers thoughtful fusions of rock, jazz, and soul. His original music is co-produced with Jay Dittamo. He has worked with luminaries such as Bucky Pizzarelli, Mike Longo and the late, great Gloria Lynne. Wells' newest recordings have tapped into the long held social justice tradition of music. Unafraid to tackle issues that continue to affect our world, LC believes that shining a light on these topics is one of the greatest gifts of our musical heritage. “Love is love and deserves to be celebrated, but by calling out social injustice and demanding human rights for all, we can help provoke change.” LC's philosophy takes it all on with fearless determination. Wells lives and works in New Jersey, where he teaches private music lessons. His song, "I Wish It Would Snow," sung by Gloria Lynne in her last recorded performance, appeared in a Lifetime original film starring Gladys Knight and Taraji P. Hoy vamos a tener un programa relajado, con una música elegante y ensoñadora, una extraordinaria selección de estándares de jazz interpretados por el guitarrista y cantante estadounidense Jhon Pizzarelli. Mr. Cole.

Our guest is singer Steven Maglio whose sound is reminiscent of the great Frank Sinatra. THE NEW YORK TIMES said of Steve, “Steven Maglio does not have blue eyes, but with his smooth croon & Rat Pack swagger, listeners just might imagine they were at the Copa Room at the Sands in 1963.” While Steven Maglio is a singer of standards. Although he is especially appreciated for his renditions of songs made popular by Frank Sinatra, he is NOT an impersonator. https://www.stevenmaglio.com/home THE BEGINNING I was born in East Harlem, N.Y. on December 25, 1958. In 1966, we moved to the Bronx, and being the new kid on the block, I walked back and forth to school alone for the first few weeks. I heard Frank Sinatra singing “My Kind Of Town,” and to pass the time on my new daily trek, I would sing the song to myself over and over. After a few days, I decided I needed another song and began to explore the only Sinatra album we owned at the time, “A Man And His Music.” This was the beginning of my addiction, not only to Sinatra, but to that whole world of standard songs and singers. It wasn't until age 43, after eight years of secretly taking voice lessons and one year of cruising the New Jersey karaoke circuit, that I made my professional debut at New York City's “Tavern On The Green,” as male vocalist with Joe Battaglia & The New York Big Band in June, 2002. Since then I've performed from Atlantic City to Las Vegas, from Cape Cod to Nashville, from Palm Beach to Beverly Hills, and from Brazil to Ecuador to Italy. In 2004, I started performing Frank Sinatra tribute shows at The Carnegie Club in New York, and I'm still singing there every Saturday evening. I've had the pleasure of entertaining President & Mrs. Donald Trump, Lisa Lampanelli, Vic Damone, Connie Francis, Jackie Mason, Danny DeVito, Rhea Perlman, William Shatner, Brad Garrett, Dennis Farina, The Kennedy Family, and most of the cast of “The Sopranos,” just to name a few. As well as multiple sports figures, politicians, business moguls, and members of the press. I've had the honor of sharing the stage with The Duke Ellington Orchestra, Frankie Valli, Wayne Newton, Dionne Warwick, Deana Martin, Tony Danza, Danny Aiello, Steve Tyrell, Joe Piscopo, Bucky Pizzarelli, Pat Cooper, Norm Crosby, Larry King, Johnny Maestro & The Brooklyn Bridge, The Spinners, and on a few occasions with Frank Sinatra's former pianist/conductor, Vincent Falcone, among others. I've appeared in the movies, “Frank & Alice,” “Once Upon A Time In Brooklyn,” “Once More With Feeling,” and in the music video, “For One More Day.” I've also sung “The Tender Trap” on the soundtrack of “My Best Friend's Girl.” In the Off-Broadway play, “Playing Sinatra,” my recordings of 11 popular Sinatra songs were used to replace the originals. I've released three CDs, “You Belong To Me & other songs Sinatra never recorded,” “Songs For Sinatra Lovers,” and “Sinatra en Bossa Nova.” Special highlights in my career were being the co-writer and official singer of “The Danny DeVito Limoncello Song,” used to promote the lemon flavored liquore that bore Danny DeVito's signature. Joining the all-star cast of The Cannolis television show. Becoming a member of the most prestigious organization in show business, The Friars Club. It's been a wild ride, and I'm far from being finished. The most common compliment paid to me is, “If Frank Sinatra heard the way you sing his songs …. he'd be proud.” AND I HOPE THAT'S TRUE ….. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/RickLertzman/support

Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Steve HowellSteve Howell was thirteen when he first heard Mississippi John Hurt fingerpicking country blues. The year was 1965, and the experience became a revelation that opened the door to a new musical universe. Steve knew immediately that tame, folky strumming of the guitar was a thing of the past for him. As Steve’s journey progressed, Mississippi John Hurt begat Blind Willie McTell and Leadbelly. They in turn begat Robert Johnson, Son House, Rev. Gary Davis, Blind Willie Johnson, Blind Blake, and a host of other black acoustic guitar players and vocalists. His interest in rural, folk-blues styles and the history of the music led him to learn more about how this music came to town and melded with the horn-oriented bands prevalent in the cities, creating a strong affinity for him with traditional jazz and the music of New Orleans from the first half of the twentieth century. His musical Odyssey naturally included the pop, country, rock, and blues music of the last half of the century, but always in the background stood the music of Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Lester Young, Jack Teagarden, Art Tatum, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Chet Atkins, Johnny Smith, Wes Montgomery, Bucky Pizzarelli, Joe Pass, George Van Eps, Lenny Breau, and many other great jazz artists. Although very interested in many other music styles (bebop, rock 'n' roll, rhythm and blues, and others), the heart of Steve’s playing and singing is rooted in the rural acoustic blues and traditional jazz genres born in the American South. Steve Howell,Dindi,Long AgoSteve Howell,Z's,Long Agowww.makingascene.org,Steve Howell,Steve Howell,I'll Remember April,Long AgoSteve Howell,Song for my Father,Long Ago

Wallace Roney - In her family 2. Wallace Roney – I Will Always Love You 3. Manu Dibango - Soul Makossa 4. Michael Longo - The Last Tango in Paris 5. Marcelo Peralta – All of me 6. Ellis marsalis - Never let me go 7. Ellis y Bradford Marsalis – Stela by Starling 8. Bucky Pizzarrelli – The way you look tonight 9. Bucky Pizzarelli y Stephane Grappelli – Blues 10. Bucky pizzarelli - Breakfast at Tiffany's / Dreamsville

It is an incredible honor to be the first to show case a new album on FM radio. In this episode of My Father's Place Radio, Richard Solomon interviews Bill Heller of the Rippingtons. The new album is entitled "Open Road."   This is his official bio: Bill Heller, best known as the keyboard player for the legendary contemporary jazz group the Rippingtons, grew up in a very musical household on Long Island, NY. His Dad was a conductor (NYC Subway), and his Mom orchestrated all the activities around the house! From an early age, he and his two brothers were surrounded by family get-togethers filled with music. It wasn't long before he got into the act, playing accordion! Bill attended Fredonia State University, and received a degree in Music Education. Bill met Russ Freeman (leader of the Rippingtons) while recording at his studio in Colorado. Russ asked him to play on a few tracks that he was producing for his and Craig Chaquico's "Redwoods to the Rockies". His first Rippingtons recording was “Topaz”, back in 1998, and he began performing live with the band in March of 2001. Since then, Bill has co-produced all of Craig’s CDs, of which a few songs made it to the #1 position on the smooth jazz charts! Bill released his first effort as a solo artist Find the Way in 2014. The project contains 12 titles, all written and produced by Bill. This recording features performances by Jeff Kashiwa and Eric Marienthal, and three different rhythm sections. From the Rippingtons Dave Karasony-drums and Rico Belled-bass, Joel Rosenblatt-drums (Spyro Gyra, Blood Sweat & Tears, Bill Evans, Michel Camillo) and Dave Anderson-bass (Bill Evans, Art Garfunkel, Blood Sweat & Tears, Bob Baldwin), Frank Belluci-drums (Bucky Pizzarelli, Oz Noy, Rachel Z) and Jim Cammack-bass (Ahmad Jamal), also Carl Fischer-trumpet (Billy Joel, Maynard Ferguson), and Luis Bonilla-trombone (Diana Ross, Marc Anthony, Vanguard Jazz Orchestra). For the last ten years Bill has served as the Musical Director for the Long Island Hall of Fame awards shows. He provided arrangements and incidental music for these shows. The bands he assembled accompanied such acts as Daryl McDaniels of RUN-DMC, Kurtis Blow, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Gary US Bonds, Felix Cavaliere, The Lovin Spoonful, Charlie Daniels, Eddie Money, Steve Vai, Vince Giordano, and more. Some of the legends inducted at these shows have included Clive Davis, Ron Delsner, Lou Reed, Eddie Palmieri, Charles Koppelman, and Steven Van Zandt. Bill has produced recordings for jazz guitarists Steve Briody and Matt Marshak. He has also performed on Broadway for the shows Movin’ Out and Hot Feet!

Combining an impressive technique and deep jazz feeling, Pattishall embodies a music that is at once intelligent, soulful and joyous. He has appeared with Wynton Marsalis, Jon Hendricks, Jimmy Heath, Donald Byrd, George Coleman, Billy Hart, Jamey Aebersold, Wycliffe Gordon, Fred Wesley, Steve Wilson, Steve Nelson, Billy Kilson, Bucky Pizzarelli, Russell Malone, Mark Whitfield Sr. and Rafiq Bhatia. Pattishall can be heard on Jamison, the Grammy-nominated debut of vocalist and drummer Jamison Ross. Pattishall has toured internationally as a leader and sideman, presenting original music as well as inventive readings of a broad range of jazz repertoire. In August 2016 he premiered Fictions, a chamber music suite based on the short stories of Jorge Luis Borges. In December 2015 Pattishall was the Music Director for “Divas of the Silver Screen,” a tribute to Ethel Waters, Lena Horne and Rosemary Clooney as part of the 2015-16 Jazz at Lincoln Center season. Recent programs have presented distinctive interpretations of the music of Nat “King” Cole, Fletcher Henderson, and Mary Lou Williams, as well as pairing works by Igor Stravinsky and Maurice Ravel with those of Duke Ellington and George Gerswhin. Active as both a pianist and composer, Chris holds an ASCAP Young Jazz Composer's Award, and participated in the Kennedy Center's Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Program and the Ravinia Festival Stean's Young Artist Program. Pattishall is an engaged music educator, teaching privately and at William Paterson University. Chris also conducts masterclasses with high school jazz ensembles throughout the United States, and he regularly presents masterclasses on jazz and its socio-historical context in the New York City public school system.  Lisa S. Johnson’s guitar art, is taking the world of fine art photography on a rock and roll ride. Born into a talented family, with a mother that sings and a father that plays guitar, bass, violin and mandolin, Lisa fell in love with melody and imagery and pursued a career in photography. After a successful 10-year stint at Kodak, Lisa found herself befriending the owner of a vintage guitar shop in Memphis, TN. It was there that she began to exclusively photograph guitars. Since then, Lisa has photographed the guitars of Les Paul, Jimmy Page, Roger Waters, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, Eric Clapton, Lou Reed, Alex Lifeson, Geddy Lee, John Lee Hooker, Peter Frampton, Chrissie Hynde, Joe Satriani, Wayne Kramer, Michael Wilton, Phil Collen, Ace Frehley, Ted Nugent, Carlos Santana, Scotti Hill, Ben Harper, Bucky Pizzarelli, John Scofield, John Hiatt, Luther Dickinson, Dickey Betts, Warren Haynes, Lucky Peterson, Al Kooper, T-Model Ford, Robert Belfour, Steve Earle, Keb Mo, Nancy Wilson, Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill, Robbie Robertson, George Benson, Steve Vai, Jack White, SLASH, John Entwistle, Michael Monarch, Brian May, Derek Trucks, Johnny Winter, Brad Paisley, Willie Nelson, Richard Thompson, Gary Rossington, Joe Walsh, Robby Krieger, Mick Ronson, Bob Margolin, Hutch Hutchinson, Bonnie Raitt, Brian Setzer, Ian Anderson, Martin Barre, Zakk Wylde, Warren DiMartini, Dave Mustaine, Lemmy Kilmister, Phil Campbell, K.K. Downing, Steve Howe, Dave Mason, Tommy Shaw, Mark Farner, Brian Robertson, Steve Morse, Porl Thompson, Michael Schenker, and many more. Far from still life, Lisa’s work conjures the abstract, yet also possesses a very sensual and ethereal feel that intentionally illustrates the intimate wear and tear details of the instrument. Her unique presentation undoubtedly personifies the musician and captures their true spirit in these wooden extensions of their own iconic flesh. http://108rockstarguitars.com

Guitarist and singer John Pizzarelli wanted to be a rock and roll star when he was a teenager. Luckily for the world of jazz, his father, Bucky Pizzarelli, introduced his son to the music of the 40s and 50s. Today John is one of the great upholders of that tradition, whether performing the songs of Richard Rogers on his latest CD or composing his own tunes.
