Episode 71: Harvey Mason Sr. You've heard Harvey Mason Sr., whether you realize it or not. From the iconic grooves of Herbie Hancock's Head Hunters to the GRAMMY-winning “Kiss From A Rose” by Seal, Harvey's drumming has shaped music history across genres, decades, and mediums — albums, film scores, and TV alike. He's not only a musical powerhouse, but a dear friend, and in this episode, we finally sat down to dig into his legendary run — especially his work with Herbie Hancock and the Head Hunters album. Harvey shares the story of how that band came together, the sessions behind Chameleon and Watermelon Man, and why he chose not to tour with them at the height of their success. We also dive into his solo career — how it started, how it evolved, and the surprising role Clive Davis played in making it all happen. Harvey opens up about his long-standing friendships and collaborations with Quincy Jones and Chick Corea, his approach to fatherhood (including raising his sons Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, and Max Mason, former VP of Quincy Jones Productions), and how he built a legacy both on and off the kit. Fun fact: Vic Firth was Harvey's teacher — and Harvey still receives royalties from the early days of Vic Firth drumsticks! We also get into his stunning new album Changing Partners: Trios 2, featuring the likes of Chick Corea, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, James Genus, Dave Grusin, Stanley Clarke. This conversation is a masterclass in musicianship, legacy, and love for the craft. Enjoy my sit-down with the incomparable Harvey Mason Sr. ‘Go with Elmo Lovano' is a weekly podcast where Elmo interviews creatives and entrepreneurs in music on HOW they push forward every day, got where they are in their careers, manage their personal lives, and share lessons learned and their most important insights. This album called "The Griffith Park Collection" is an all-star date nominally led by drum master Lenny White. The others involved are Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and flugelhorn, Joe Henderson on tenor saxophone, Chick Corea on piano, Stanley Clarke on acoustic bass. They had completed an album in Los Angeles with the great singer Chaka Kahn and producer Bruce Lundvall got the bright idea to record an instrumental album with this stellar band. Lenny White was the nominal leader and this great album was finished in two sessions. The tunes usually were done with a few exceptions in one or two takes. Everything gelled and we have a latter day classic done in 1980.It is overlooked by some fans and shouldn't be so listen up tonight and hear this fine document by these masters. Enjoy!

This time we felt like exploring the interplay of basketball and jazz, focusing in particular on a great jazz advocate like Kareem Abdul Jabbar [pictured], on the soundtrack of the HBO series "The Winning Time", on an oneiric game played with a basketball fish, and on Stanley Clarke's tribute to this sport, to which he devoted as many hours as he did to the study of the bass, while growing up in Philly. The playlist features Nicholas Britell, Robert Glasper; Jeff Beal; Poncho Sanchez, Tito Puente; Steve Lacy, Don Cherry; Freddie Hubbard; Kris Allen; The Jazz Passengers; and Stanley Clarke. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Chris to discuss some of his iconic photos and the stories behind them. ******Over the past 50 years, Chris' signature work with a galaxy of A-List actors, models, athletes and musicians has helped them define their public image while establishing his reputation as one of the most respected photographers in the entertainment industry. Drawn to the excitement of music as a teenager growing up in Northern California, Chris began his career by shooting local rock shows for fun. He quickly graduated to headlining acts and, since moving to Los Angeles in the early 1980's, has worked with a massive catalog of performers in the music and entertainment industry. He has shot the best of the best in the music world including ground-breaking bands like Jane's Addiction, Pearl Jam, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Nirvana, George Michael, Iggy Pop, No Doubt, Henry Rollins, Elvis Costello, Fiona Apple, Scott Weiland and Soundgarden. These images have regularly appeared in Rolling Stone, Spin, RayGun, Vibe, Musician as well as on the covers of more than 300 record albums and CDs.Along with his significant commercial and editorial contributions as a music photographer, Chris' portfolio also includes an equally impressive group of A-list actors from Johnny Depp to Dustin Hoffman, sports icons from Kobe Bryant to Wayne Gretzky, and television shows from American Idol to So You Think You Can Dance. His images have been in Entertainment Weekly, US, Stuff, Maxim, Premiere, British Elle and W. In the last few years Chris has presented multiple exhibitions celebrating his iconic music photography. He started with Greatest Hits: Los Angeles and then followed up with GH: Martini Ranch, GH: George Michael, GH: Grunge, GH: Pearl Jam and GH: Michael Hutchence. He is currently working on his Greatest Hits documentary and expanding the exhibition worldwide. His natural talent, versatility and tireless pursuit of artistic expression continue to grow no matter the medium. “Regardless of what I've been able to accomplish in the past, there are always new mountains to climb and new borders to cross,” Chris explains. “I'm excited by where I'm going and what lies ahead… by the journey as well as the destination.”Website: https://www.chriscuffaro.com/Photo Website: https://cuffarophoto.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thecuffarophoto/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZ6qTnhssn2OgCKcQb9J8ww*****If you would like to contact the show about being a guest please email us at Dauna@betertopodcast.comThis episode is on YouTube: https://youtu.be/VZhkYCBBkkoFollow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomHave a question or want to be a guest on the podcast email: dauna@bettertopodcast.comHave a question for our producer Rich Zei contact him at rich.zei@thirdearaudio.comIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast SuziTo see upcoming guests click here: https://www.dmneedom.com/better-topodcast©2024 Better To...Podcast with D. Maggie speaks intimately with Robby Krieger about his debut recording with his latest group, The Soul Savages. Joining Robby on this all-instrumental odyssey of psych-rock soul are top-shelf composers, instrumentalists, and bandmates. Bassist-songwriter Kevin “Brandino” Brandon co-wrote and recorded with Robby on the Singularity album, and he has won over half a dozen Grammy awards as well as three Emmy awards. His extensive resume includes credits with James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson, and Beyonce. Keyboardist-songwriter Ed Roth is a Grammy-nominee known for his work in jazz, rock, and pop, and a robust resume that includes working with Ringo Starr, Brothers Johnson, Coolio, Shuggie Otis, and Annie Lennox. And drummer-songwriter Franklin Vanderbilt brings savage to the band's soul with his fatback groove and jazzy nimbleness. Among others, his credits include drumming for legendary Chaka Khan, recording with fusion jazz pioneer Stanley Clarke, and touring worldwide with Lenny Kravitz.Robby Krieger knows that when you assemble the right bunch of musicians, and trust in the creative process, magic happens. As a founding member of The Doors, the guitarist intuitively understands the beauty of free-flowing collaboration and telepathic group interplay. This is evident on Robby's self-titled debut release from his new band, Robby Krieger And The Soul Savages, out January 19, 2024 on The Players Club / Mascot Label Group.Robby Krieger And The Soul Savages was recorded old school style with a bunch of friends jamming and recording in a relaxed studio setting. Tracked at Robby's own Love Street Studios in Glendale, California, it finds Robby stretching out over cinematic groove music inspired by classic soul, 1960s jazz, blues, rock, psychedelic rock, and beyond.Source: https://www.mascotlabelgroup.com/collections/robby-kriegerSource: https://www.allmusic.com/album/robby-krieger-the-soul-savages-mw0004139373Source: https://www.amazon.com/Robby-Krieger-Soul-Savages/dp/B0CMJ8MZD6Host Maggie LePique, a radio veteran since the 1980's at NPR in Kansas City Mo.
