Originally from Harrisburg, PA, Miller was born into a musical family. Growing up she was drawn to the soulful divas of the day- Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner..Her inspiration from the great jazz singers, in particular Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Dinah Washington. Philadelphia-based vocalist Maci Miller brings together a host of the city's finest musicians for her stunning new album Nine, the number nine is connected to wisdom and experience. Nine is the singer's second release. The stellar ensemble represents a who's who of the thriving Philly jazz scene- the pair are joined by bassist Mike Boone, tenor sax living legend Larry McKenna, Victor North on soprano sax, and drummers Byron Landham, Leon Jordan Sr., and Josh Orlando, The bassist Mike Boone invited her to join him for several of his weekly livestream concerts; it was there that she met pianist Aaron Graves. Playing into the theme of the album, Graves turns out to be the ninth writing partner that Miller has worked with during her career. The number is rounded out by special guest trumpeter Jeremy Pelt. The tracks on the Nine album, "Complicated," featuring a witty call and response with Larry McKenna, the tense "I Can't-Wait," and the sultry "Love Me For Who I Am" "Strange is the Night" sets an ominous noir tone to address the societal issues confronting the world, with modern-day echoes of Billie Holiday's immortal "Strange Fruit." The album ends with the buoyant "Feel the Music," serving as a mission statement for the deeply felt album. In addition to the original songs, the album includes a rendition of Chick Corea's inspirational "High Wire,""The Nearness of You," and Miller's new lyric for Cedar Walton's "Firm Roots," the title song of the pianist's 1976 album. Award winning vocalist Emma Pask, has firmly established herself as one of Australia's favourite voices in Jazz. Her effortless, honest stage presence combined with her powerful vocal ability, leaves audiences spellbound and inspired whenever she takes to the stage. While Emma's voice and style are unique, and individually her own, her performances are reminiscent of the classic era of jazz, when swing was top of the charts. Her talent was first spotted by internationally renowned Jazz great James Morrison, when she was just 16 years old. She joined his band as the lead vocalist and went on to spend a solid 20 years touring the world with Morrison. On request Emma performed the Bridal Waltz for Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban at their wedding. More recently she played support to Legendary Guitarist/Vocalist George Benson when he toured Australia. Emma opened for Grammy Award winning American vocalist Kurt Elling, on his 2018 Australian Tour. Emma is a “Mo' award winner for Jazz Vocalist of the year, and has received two ARIA award nominations for Best Jazz Album of the Year in 2014 and 2016. She has sung in London at The Queen Elizabeth Hall with the BBC Concert Orchestra, the Sydney Opera House with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Emma has performed in China with The Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Auckland with the NZ Philharmonic, and with the WA Symphony Orchestra in Perth. She has received rave reviews for her performances in Uruguay, South America, and is a regular at the prestigious Ascona Jazz Festival in Switzerland. Despite her achievements and the international recognition of her talent, Emma retains her natural, refreshing and unpretentious, positive approach to life. Jazz virtuoso James Morrison says of Emma, “Whilst it's fashionable to be a jazz singer these days, she is the real thing!” In 2020 amidst the Covid 19 lockdown, Emma was chosen by The Sydney Opera House to launch the first of their concerts live streamed from the stage of the hallowed Joan Sutherland Theatre. This performance won the offical Time Out (in) award for favourite Arts livestream. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Nicole Henry, Renowned Jazz Vocalist About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Nicole Henry, is a renowned, multiple award-winning jazz singer, whose dynamic, soulful voice, incredible range, impeccable phrasing, and powerful bluesy-gospel emotional delivery, have made her one of the world's most highly acclaimed vocalists. In 2002, after being discovered singing in a jazz trio in Miami, the Miami New Times named her the Best Solo Musician of the year. She's gone on to record 8 spectacular albums including, “The Nearness of You”, “Teach Me Tonight”, “The Very Thought of You”, “Embraceable”, “Summer Sessions”, her latest album, “Time to Love Again”, which has already had 4 top-charting singles - and I can't resist mentioning one of my all-time favourite albums, “So Good, So Right: Nicole Henry Live”, recorded at the renowned Feinstein's 54 Below nightclub in New York City. Four of her albums have landed in the Top 10 on the U.S. Billboard, JazzWeek, UK and Japan jazz charts. Her repertoire ranges from the Great American Songbook, classic and contemporary jazz, pop standards, blues and original material. And get this: in 2013, she received the "Soul Train Award" for "Best Traditional Jazz Performance", winning out over George Benson, Jeffrey Osborne, Chaka Khan, Tony Bennett, Marc Anthony and Terrence Blanchard. She is universally adored by music critics. The New York Times said, “Every gesture and inflection conveys confidence and mastery, and she creates the sense of being in the presence of a pop-soul superwoman.” And Broadway World said, “So powerful is her charisma, so unique is her personality, so rich is her music, so abandoned is her joy, that you can't watch her without being drawn in." And in my opinion, that's an understatement. Our guest's latest album, entitled, “Time to Love Again”, has been described by Downbeat Magazine as “exuberant, joyous, and immaculately executed.” Her latest single, which is her fourth charting single from the album, is called “Is It a Crime”, and it was recently added as the #1 breakthrough single on the UK Soul Charts. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Adi Braun, Renowned Jazz Vocalist and Recording Artist About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Adi Braun, is an immensely popular jazz vocalist, recording artist and cabaret and concert performer who's been taking the world by storm with her sultry and distinctive, emotionally expressive vocal stylings. Although early on, it looked like she'd be following in the footsteps of her famous opera singer father, Victor Braun, she eventually followed her heart, and her musical instincts, and she's never looked back. After winning a local competition in 2001, she was catapulted to centre-stage as one of North America's leading jazz vocalists. She's performed throughout North America and Europe, captivating audiences with her very own unique singing style which she calls, “cabarazz”, reflecting a fusion of cabaret and jazz. In 2007, she was nominated for a MAC Award for “Best Major Jazz Vocalist of the Year”. On Saturday, September 2, 2023, Rockabilly Greg went on location to meet with jazz icon, and 2023 Buffalo Music Hall of Fame Inductee, Peggy Farrell where they had a ball talking about Peggy's musical journey. Peggy has been singing all her life and has performed all over the US. While working at the Statler Hotel in Buffalo she started singing with Anne Fadale who insisted she try out for a talent show, which she won. Anne had heard Peggy singing in the elevator, because Peggy always sang. Later on she spent 18 years with the legendary pianist Al Tinney, that included a 5-year run at Fanny's Supper Club in Amherst. They recorded the CD “Peg & Al” in 2000.
Episode 536 also includes an E.W. Poem called "Power Flower." Spoken word intro piece is by legendary underground Hip-Hop MC Myka 9 of Freestyle Fellowship. Origins and influences are featured in this episode's conversation with Dwight Trible, including his love and appreciation for jazz drummer extraordinaire Brian Blade and his collaboration with the great Kenny Garrett, whose album "Sounds from the Ancestors" he played on. He describes his early life in Cincinnati, before he moved to Los Angeles, and some of the racial issues he encountered as a young boy. We talk about what it was like for him to work with Leimert Park elders and legends like Billy Higgins, Art Davis, Horace Tapscott, and Kamau Daáood. We discuss The World Stage, founded by Daáood and Higgins, and its importance as a grassroots, community-owned cultural center for progressive music. Content and the sacred are important themes throughout.https://dwighttrible.com
Once I could feel grounded in an East African context and value who I am in an American context - suddenly it was so apparent that music was where I was supposed to be. The dynamic, ascendant jazz singer Somi has been celebrated for her artistry as much as her activism. She became the first African woman ever nominated in any of the Grammy's Jazz categories last year, and she has performed at the United Nations' General Assembly by invitation from UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon. Somi describes herself as a “East African Midwestern girl who loves family, poetry, and freedom” and yet hers is a story of survival, adversity, and transformation. In this episode, she discusses what happens when a teacher steals your joy, the power of a meditative practice that connects her to her ancestors, and how she is still finding her voice.
