Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Billy Stritch, Renowned Music Director, Vocalist & Pianist About Harvey's guests: Today's guest, Billy Stritch, is a renowned composer, arranger, vocalist, and pianist extraordinaire who is both a highly sought-after music director and a star performer in his own right.   For 25 years he worked closely with Liza Minnelli as her music director, collaborator and accompanist.  He's also been the music director and arranger for many other great stars including Tony Bennett, Marilyn Maye, Linda Lavin, Linda Eder, Ann Hampton Callaway, and Christine Ebersole.    In addition, he's a wonderful songwriter.  He co-wrote the multi-platinum, Grammy-winning, number 1 hit song “Does He Love You” recorded in 1993 by Reba McEntire and Linda Davis.    As a solo entertainer, he performs sell-out shows in concert halls and nightclubs across the country, including his highly acclaimed tribute shows to Mel Tormé and Cy Coleman, as well as his spectacular show with Jim Caruso called “The Sinatra Century”.  During the pandemic, he was one of the first artists to start performing online, creating his own weekly live-stream show called “Billy's Place”, celebrating the Great American Songbook with songs and stories from his amazing career.    He's recorded numerous albums, and some of my favourites are “Jazz Live”, “Waters of March”, “Billy Stritch Sings Mel Tormé”, “The Sunday Set: Recorded Live at Birdland”, “Christmas at Birdland”, and “Billy's Place”, which is a collection of his favorite songs from those online shows I just mentioned.  He's also been prominently featured on at least a dozen other albums by music artists like Christine Ebersole, Jim Caruso, Benny Carter, Klea Blackhurst, and many more.   And if all that weren't enough, our guest is also a Broadway star.   He played the role of “Oscar” in the Tony Award winning 2001 Broadway revival of “42nd Street”.  And when he's not on tour, he can often be found dazzling New York audiences on Sunday nights at Bemelman's Bar at the Carlyle, and of course, every Monday night at Birdland, for Jim Caruso's Cast Party. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ To see more about Billy Stritch, go to:http://billystritch.com/https://www.facebook.com/billystritchpro/https://www.instagram.com/billystritch/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPKEPvjXbWy_RQALL8KiLPghttps://open.spotify.com/artist/5BFCEjtWiORUGo96eKDbXi?autoplay=true #BillyStritch   #harveybrownstoneinterviews

I hope to be around at 93, but to accomplish what Marilyn Maye has done in her time on earth, you must be an incredibly dedicated human. Listen to her talk about her remarkable career and what she has planned for Provincetown at The Art House this season. "MARK CORTALE & BROADWAY @ THE ART HOUSE are proud to present the legendary MARILYN MAYE with BILLY STRITCH at the piano for 10 shows only. Marilyn Maye is a highly praised singer, actress, director, arranger, educator, Grammy-nominated recording artist and a musical treasure. Her entire life has been committed to the art of song and performance. The award-winning Ms. Maye appeared 76 times on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, the record for a singer. Perhaps the simplest Marilyn Maye accolade came after one of her show-stopping appearances on The Tonight Show when, turning to his audience of millions, Johnny Carson said, And that, young singers, is the way its done. Marilyn began her professional singing career by winning a 13-week appearance on radio station WIBW, Topeka, Kansas, at age 9. She has been committed her entire life to the art of song and performance. During her eleven-year engagement at the Colony in Kansas City, she was discovered by Steve Allen, who was the first to present her various times to a national television audience. The Steve Allen performances led her to an RCA recording contract. Her RCA recordings consist of seven albums and 34 singles, including the first hit recordings of Cabaret and Step to the Rear. Her album with full orchestra, The Lamp is Low, is considered a classic. Her place in American music history was assured when the Arts Council of the Smithsonian Institution selected one of her recordings, Too Late Now, for the Smithsonian-produced album of the 110 Best American Compositions of the Twentieth Century. Her many symphony concert appearances around the United States include the Florida Symphony, The Philly Pops, The Phoenix Symphony, The Kansas City Symphony, The Omaha Symphony, and in June, 2015, The Pasadena Symphony, Michael Feinstein conducting. Her two appearances with the New York Pops at Carnegie Hall for tributes to Stephen Sondheim and Frank Loesser received show-stopping applause and rave reviews." --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/stephanie7502/support

On the other side is the jazz crowd, who want everything hip and cool and understated, and will split the scene if anything doesn't swing. She then moved to New York in 2017 to continue pursuing her growing career. Maintaining a weekly residency at Birdland, Veronica toured internationally and joined the lineup on the show of trumpeter Chris Botti.   The past few years, she has toured and performed on numerous occasions with Michael Feinstein, Benny Green, Wynton Marsalis, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, appearing at legendary festivals (Montreal, Monterey, Umbria, Detroit, Marciac, and more) and jazz clubs (Birdland, Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, Jazz Showcase, Jazz Standard, SF Jazz, JALC Shanghai, Blue Note, and more).   In 2018, Veronica signed a deal with Mack Avenue Recordings, and released her 2019 album, "Confessions," with them. She’s the real deal, the surviving artist of the American popular singer” Rex Reed, New York Observer www.MarilynMaye.com  In the years since Marilyn Maye first appeared in the spotlight as a tiny pre-teen vocalist in a series of amateur contests in Topeka, Kansas, she has received an endless stream of kudos. The late Johnny Carson called her “Super Singer.” Ella Fitzgerald dubbed her “The greatest white female singer in the world.” The Houston Chronicle termed her “A National Treasure.” And the prestigious Smithsonian Institution chose her recording of “Too Late Now” (from her RCA Lamp Is Low album) for inclusion in its Best Performers of the Best Compositions of the 20th Century permanent collection, along with such other singing greats as Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland.

Luke Frazier, a rapidly rising star in the Pops world, has proven himself as both an innately musical conductor and a sensitive pianist. His commitment to re-envisioning pops programming has quickly established him as a dynamic force across the music community. Frazier has demonstrated his versatility and range by conducting in venues both grand and intimate, from Lincoln Center to Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center to the Rainbow Room. Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Marvin Hamlisch put it best, calling Frazier “so talented, and sensitive to every nuance.” As a testament to his mission to re-imagine pops programming, Frazier founded the American Pops Orchestra in 2015, presenting all original programming. This professional orchestra boasts outstanding musicians from New York and Washington DC, featuring leading Broadway singers, dancers, and celebrity performers. In only three seasons The American Pops Orchestra has already garnered rave reviews, including the following from The New York Times, “As much as any individual singer, what warmed the evening was the sumptuous lilt of The American Pops Orchestra, conducted by Luke Frazier.” His commitment to the American Songbook is also evident through his involvement on the Board of the Great American Songbook Foundation. In demand as a clinician, adjudicator, and speaker, Luke recently addressed the National Symphony Orchestra's “Summer Music Institute” students. He appeared as the Keynote Speaker for the National Society of Arts and Letters (NSAL) Award for Excellence in the Arts at the Kennedy Center and also addressed VSA Arts, an international organization for artists with disabilities. Mr. Frazier serves as the Artist in Residence with the DC Youth Orchestra and most recently presented a series concerts celebrating Ella Fitzgerald's birth. Hi Friend,I’m your podcast host, Sally Adams. Every week I talk to people about creating original work for a live audience. Welcome to Episode 32 of Sally’s Performing Arts Lab Podcast. Today, I’ll talk with musical theatre performer and Tulsa cabaret producer Pat Hobbs. Send an email anytime to Sally@sallypal.com. Your ideas keep great conversations coming every Monday evening. Check out sallypal.com/join for the free 20-page theatre resource. I’ll soon have Creator’s Notebook Insert #2 on scheduling available. In the meantime, you can listen to last week’s show (episode 31) about scheduling for your production. It’s never too late to sign up to have access to the Creator’s Notebook inserts. I’m interested in knowing what creators need as a performing arts resource. Do you need more information about venues? Do you want to know how to put butts in seats on the cheap? Would you like to connect with other creators? Do you need more practical tips? Do you want to know how to manage the “imposter syndrome” most of us deal with? If there are things you want included in the Creator’s Notebook, let me know by sending an email to sally@sallypal.com! I read them all… I really do. Be sure and listen until the end of the interview for Concise Advice from the Interview, and Words of Wisdom from George. Pat Hobbs is old school. He always says "please" and "thank you". My grandmother might have said, "He’s generous to a fault". Pat is a longtime player in the musical theatre scene in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He’s played the Tin Man, the Governor of Texas, a shady lawyer, a drag queen, a wealthy socialite, and a 2-bit gangster. But Pat’s favorite role is that of song stylist. He has a love of the American songbook that opened doors to the cabaret stage. Pat has recently created several cabarets just to have an excuse to sing his favorite songs. His shows became sold-out events. Pat has a long list of fans including me. You can find out more about his shows on his website, https://www.wpathobbs.com/ He’s used cabarets to showcase new talent and support his favorite causes. Although he retired from his 9-5, Pat Hobbs is hardly retired. He and his husband John and their two westies lead very busy and musical lives. John is also a musical theatre performer. Because he loves old-school jazz and musical theatre, Pat works hard to interpret numbers with authenticity. He mentioned a story about cabaret singer Marilyn Maye on CBS Sunday Morning. Here’s the link to the story: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/marilyn-maye-proudly-old-school/  On Saturday, February 10, from 6 - 10pm, Pat is producing a new cabaret show called “Spectrums of Love.” The show celebrates the official opening of the new Lynn Riggs Black Box Theatre at OkEQ (Oklahomans for Equality) at 621 East 4th, in the East Village of Tulsa, Oklahoma. For more information, visit www.okeq.org Here are few clips from Pat’s cabaret performances: https://vimeo.com/249609929 Concise Advice from the Interview is a short version of tips from Cabaret King, Pat Hobbs. Here are 5 important bits of advice. 5) When deciding on songs for your cabaret show, make a list with 3 columns; column 1 is songs you absolutely have to sing, column 2 is your alternate numbers, and column 3 is songs you love that you might have to save for a later show.   4) Let an audience see your authentic self 3) Share your experience by mentoring the next generation of performers 2) Give yourself permission to make mistakes 1) Live in gratitude     Check out the blog, SallyPAL.com, for articles and podcast episodes. You can be part of the momentum that’s building. Sign up for a FREE Creator’s Notebook insert at SallyPAL.com/join. Thank you for following, sharing, subscribing, reviewing, joining, & thank you for listening. I want you to pursue your dream to have your work on the stage in front of a live audience. It’s scary, but SallyPAL is here with resources, encouragement, and a growing community of people like us. I’m Sally and this is SallyPAL (the P-A-L in PAL stands for Performing Arts Lab).   If you’re downloading and listening on your drive to work, or falling asleep to my gum flapping jibber jabber like my sister does, let me know you’re out there. I want to help you create original shows for a live audience… All the performances you’ve seen on stage once lived only in someone’s imagination… Now it's YOUR turn!

Gary and Roscoe are pleased and excited to welcome cabaret artist Beckie Menzie to Booth One this week. Beckie is an award-winning performer, teacher, song writer, musical director and vocal coach, a staple of the Windy City music scene, and nationally recognized as one of the country's finest cabaret entertainers. Along with her musical partner Tom Michael, they have been called, "Sizzling...immensely appealing...one of the most compelling duos in cabaret today!" Beckie is from Pierceton, IN, but a Chicago girl through and through. She learned piano at an early age and fell in love with music and the performing arts while hanging around the Wagon Wheel Theatre in Warsaw, IN. She has performed at some of the nation's top clubs, theaters, concert halls, outdoor venues, and cabaret rooms. She most recently appeared at Carnegie Hall and the Auditorium Theatre. We play a few song excerpts throughout the podcast to give you a taste of her talent, style and singular musical gifts. Beckie and the boys chat about cabaret performers Michael Feinstein, Barbara Cook, Karen Mason, Sally Mayes, Julie Wilson, Bette Midler, Bernadette Peters, Marilyn Maye and Barbra Streisand. (Just to drop a few names!) We discuss Laura Benanti's latest show at the Cafe Carlyle in New York and the stellar reviews she received. Gary gives a shout out to the Therapy Players, Chicago's premier all-psychotherapist comedy improvisation troupe! Seems they're holding auditions looking for a few new recruits. If you or someone you love is mental health professional, check them out at www.therapyplayers.com. In addition to performing steadily with Tom, Beckie is also a vocal coach and teacher, has recently become engaged, and sings with Laura Freeman & Marianne Murphy Orland in a group called Girls Like Us. They'll be performing their new show Barbra, Bette and Bernadette at Chicago's famed Davenport's nightclub on November 19 & 20. Go here for more info and tickets. Beckie's various musical ventures are part of her BeMe Music empire. If you like The Golden Girls like we do, you'll LOVE the new action figures from Funko. Retirees Dorothy, Blanche, Rose and Sophia are posable vinyl figures 3.75 inches tall and ready for action! The four-figure set costs $25 and is only available from participating Target stores and New York Comic Con. Run, don't walk, to your nearest Target for holiday shopping magic. There's nothing like a country and western song title to bring a smile - and an occasional grimace - to your face. Gary cycles through the Best of the Worst Country-Western Song Titles of all time. Here's one - She Got the Gold Mine and I Got the Shaft. Beckie tells us about the country song she once wrote and one that she intends to. Roscoe inquires whether anyone can be taught how to sing, in an apparent attempt to jump start a cabaret career of his own. Beckie responds as only a true vocal/performance coach can. Don't worry, folks. Roscoe and I are probably not leaving the Booth One podcast for vocalist fame and fortune anytime soon! Chat Pack, anyone? We play a few rounds of our favorite conversational party game with Beckie. Kiss of Death: Jean Shepard, Female Country Voice with Muscle and Ambition. A mainstay of the Grand Ole Opry for more than 60 years, Ms. Shepard blazed the Country Music trail for other female singers like Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline and Tammy Wynette. She brought a freewheeling, cheeky style to the eternal themes of heartache, cheating and marital discord, planting the flag for independent women. In the early 1950's, Ms. Shepard had hits with "The Root of All Evil (Is a Man)", "Many Happy Hangovers to You" and "Twice the Lovin' (in Half the Time)". She was small but her voice was powerful, pure and penetrating. She was also an expert yodeler. Ms. Shepard was an ardent champion of traditional country music throughout her lifetime. She was 82. On this I Love Jazz Special Archive Edition, you'll catch music from a collection of the artists we've featured over the last year. These performances are not repeats of what you've seen before on our show, but musical numbers that we just didn't have the time to include. You'll hear Trumpeter Dawn Weber and her band, vocalist Marlena Shaw, jazz from the facility and students from Webster University, A Cabaret performance from Marilyn Maye and Billy Stritch, and a great sax and percussion duo - Willie Akins and Montez Coleman.
