Happy to introduce Episode 008 of Environmental Professionals. This episode is about environmental NGO in Kenya. Boniface Rwimbo Kamau holds a bachelor degree in environmental conservation. He works as an environmental consultant but has also recently started an NGO that aims to help educate people across Africa on environmental issues. He is seeking help learning about how to secure funding for his initiatives (please contact him if you can provide advice). Organization- Ecodiverse Africa to create awareness on biodiversity in Africa Current initiative-Plastic Reuse Kenya https://bit.ly/2VhXwkg PLASTIC POLLUTION PUTTING MILLIONS AT RISK Plastic waste bottles have been accumulating for decades now leaving the world in one of the largest crisis. They are everywhere and have become the most produced man-made materials. As of today 1,000,000 plastic bottles are bought around the world each minute. They end up in landfills, rivers and immediate environment after single use which is really affecting our environment. Researchers have also found plastics in rain samples and air that we breathe. Besides, studies have shown that if we don't stop our consumption habits, by 2050 there will be more plastics in rivers and oceans than fish. These are just a few statistics that highlights the urgency of acting now! To beat plastic pollution I have an initiative to reuse plastic bottles in Kenya. I collect waste bottles, clean, disinfect and refill them with liquid soaps. I then sell them back to the community at an affordable price. This maintains community hygiene. It also encourages people to form a habit of reusing plastics rather than disposing them off after single use. While plastics release harmful chemicals as they take long to decompose (450 years), this initiative ensures plastics remain useful throughout their life cycle.
