In this podcast, we speak to Carmen Többen who won the WorldSkills Gold Medal for best receptionist in Lyon, France last year. After winning the Gold Medal at the SwissSkills competition in Bern in 2022 and the EuroSkills Gold Medal in Gdansk, Poland in 2023, Carmen used those exceptional experiences to win gold in Lyon. Carmen walks us through the prestigious WorldSkills competition by describing the different tasks she had to perform and explains how she trained for these four, very intense days. We question Carmen on how she trained and managed to stay focused under immense pressure and how these competitions demand both physical and mental preparation. Carmen also describes the comradery that these competitions create and how being able to compete against young people from around the world was a reward in itself. By sharing some memorable moments and talking us through the past three years of intensive training, our listeners can better understand how becoming the World's best receptionist demanded perseverance, confidence and a very strong network of support not only from her family, but also from the hotels that Carmen worked in during these competitions. While working at the Baur au Lac, one of Zurich's most luxurious hotels, Carmen received first-class job training and the staff were thrilled to learn that she had won gold in Lyon. Carmen Többen studied at the Schulhotel Regina in Interlaken, Switzerland and received a Swiss Federal certificate as a Hotel Communication Specialist and went on to work at hotels in Thun and in Zermatt. In 2023 she joined the Baur au Lac in Zurich as a hotel receptionist and went on to become a Front Office Supervisor. In September of this year, she will continue her education by starting a Bachelor Degree in Hotel Management at the Lucerne Hotel School.

On this episode of Dialogue over Division, we are excited to welcome Adrian Brown, Executive Director of the Centre for Public Impact. With over 20 years of experience in government performance and transformation, Adrian holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a Master of Arts in Management Studies from the University of Cambridge. He brings a deep understanding of the complexities of governance and a passion for fostering innovation and resilience in government through strategic long-term thinking. In our conversation, Adrian shares his vision for better governance, emphasizing the need to foster an informed and engaged citizenry. We explore how addressing social issues requires acknowledging their complexity and striving for resolution rather than perfection, recognizing that each of us plays a part in the solution. We also discuss the difficulties of being a public figure in today's polarized environment, where leaders often face intense scrutiny. While this scrutiny is necessary, it can sometimes hinder innovation and bold decision-making in government. Adrian believes that through strategic long-term thinking and learning from failures, we can build a more resilient public sector that not only withstands these pressures but thrives under them. As we navigate these ideas, it's essential to consider: How can we, as citizens, contribute to a governance system that is not just reactive but proactive in addressing the needs of all? What role do we play in ensuring that our government remains accountable and responsive to the evolving challenges of our time? Adrian's insights challenge us to embrace our shared responsibility in shaping the future of governance, emphasizing that while the path may not always be easy, it is one we must commit to together. Join us as we delve into these critical topics and discuss how we can collectively work towards a more effective, transparent, and resilient government. In this episode of Dialogue Over Division, we spoke with Marco Van Huigenbos. Marco immigrated from the Netherlands to rural Alberta in 1996, building a life centered around farming, business, and family. At 26, driven by his dedication to his community, Marco ran for municipal council. Marco provides examples of some of the issues he was involved with while in his role, and he also shares the frustrations he faced and complexities he encountered. He describes how public officials on a local level are held to account more readily due to the smaller area they are charged with. He had citizens approaching and asking him questions at the grocery store highlighting the importance of governance and accountability at local levels. As government officials mismanaged C0vid, Marco felt that citizens' voices were being ignored. This frustration led him to participate in the Coutts protest as a form of civil disobedience. His participation resulted in a charge six months later and ultimately his conviction. On July 22, he will be arraigned in connection with this matter. Marco's journey invites us to consider the importance of civic engagement in ensuring that every citizen's voice is heard, despite the challenges and frustrations that come with holding the government accountable. If we don't know about the problems, we cannot fix them. Marco's involvement exposes some of these issues. Listen now and share your thoughts on this crucial topic. Do you see Marco as a criminal or a dedicated citizen striving to be heard? This podcast series is your guide to becoming a more informed and engaged citizen. We are happy to welcome Rehgert and Vanessa van Zyl to The Hamilton Review Podcast! Rehgert discusses how and why he founded Aleph Surf International in 2007. Vanessa shares about her background in fashion design and how she has been working as a fashion designer, creating jobs for marginalized women in communities in Uganda, Rwanda, Congo, South Africa and Jordan. Together, they live in Jeffrey's Bay South Africa and are using Aleph to assist people who lack opportunities in Africa, Mexico, the Middle East and beyond. Don't miss this delightful couple's story about helping those in need. Enjoy the conversation! Aleph Surf was founded by Rehgert van Zyl in August 2007 after completing his Bachelor Degree in Humanities and Anthropology. After college, he took a job as a community worker for a Dutch NGO in George, South Africa. This NGO focused on assisting children living on the streets. Through this experience, Rehgert quickly realized that his focus needed to be on prevention rather than rehabilitation. Knowing about the complexities of race and class systems in South Africa, he began to think of ways that he could connect to the multiracial youth that he wanted to serve and mentor.A common ground was needed through which to meet these street kids. Being an avid surfer, Rehgert used the foundations of learning to surf as a metaphor for teaching important life lessons. It was “learning by doing.” And so, Aleph Surf was founded in South Africa in 2007 and it has now expanded to assisting people who lack opportunities in life in Africa, Mexico, the Middle East and beyond. Rehgert met his Californian wife Vanessa in the US through mutual friends. They realized that their desires and interests aligned from the start, so the decision to get married came quickly. Vanessa had been living in Africa 3 years prior to meeting Rehgert in 2010. Over the past 15 years she has been working as a fashion designer, creating jobs for marginalized women in communities in Uganda, Rwanda, Congo, South Africa and Jordan. Using her experience in design and pattern making she has enabled hundreds of women to empower themselves to become a vital financial provider for their families. Rehgert & Vanessa believe in the restoration of all things and that we are called as human beings to play a part in restoring the world back to the Creator's original design through the giftings he has given us. Celia Milano began her research 20 years ago before the internet tools we have today. Listen to how she contacted family by letter. We also discuss her three books.I was born in New York City and raised in Yonkers, New York. I have several degrees, including an Associate Degree in Applied Science and Technology from Thomas A. Edison State College in Trenton, NJ, a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration from Georgian Court University in Lakewood, NJ and a Master of Science in Management from College of St. Elizabeth, Morristown, NJ. I attended college for over 20 years and one of the sisters at Georgian Court University called me "a lifer."For over 30 years, I worked as a computer software engineer in the military and petroleum industries. I am retired and devote my time to researching my family tree. In my free time, I help guide people in writing their memoirs, as I feel it is the most precious gift to the family.I have written three books: Sicilian Family Adventures; Life's Curves: When the Present Triggers the Past and Tuscany in July: An Adventure of a Lifetime.I am also on the board of directors for The Sicilian Project, a non-profit organization that offers free English instructional camps to the children in Sicily. The Sicilian Project is important to me because as a child, I was not allowed to learn the Sicilian dialect, as the thought at that time in New York was to be “Americanized.” The idea that Sicilian children will become bi-lingual and have a greater advantage in the world is very rewarding to me.mosaic: Exploring Jewish Issuesmosaic is Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County's news podcastListen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifyFarmers and Nobles traces the research path of blogger and podcast host Bob Sorrentino. On today's Coffee with Rich, we will be joined by Allen Elishewitz of Elishewitz Custom Knives and Tactician Concepts. Allen spent a good part of his childhood living in third world countries around Southeast Asia. During that time he came to appreciate the way people there lived with minimal infrastructure. This helped shape some of his personality and how he approaches life and training. Allen has always trained in some type of combative arts since he was 10 years old. Over several decades he has had the pleasure of studying and training with some of the best instructors in their fields. This interest is what guided him into my current occupation. Allen is a professional knifemaker who specializes in tactical and defensive blades. Allen is one of the first knifemakers to start the tactical folder movement. He operates Elishewitz Custom Knives and Tactician Concepts with his wife Valerie. Allen has been interested in knives ever since he was very young. His martial arts trainings, along with his experiences as a Recon Marine, gave me the perfect background to design both defensive and utility knives. During the time Allen spent at 4th Recon C Company, he was a Team Leader in charge of a Deep Recon Platoon.
