In Episode 0 of the six-part series "HEAT - Beyond 1.5" we confront a difficult truth: despite all our efforts toward climate protection, we must also learn to live with the consequences of the climate crisis. What can we expect as climate change increasingly impacts our daily lives? And what technologies or business models might help us better adapt to the looming climate catastrophe? In this introductory episode, David Wortmann, founder and CEO of the Cleantech-focused consultancy DWR eco, and Niko Samios, founder of the early-stage investor PT1, set the stage for upcoming discussions. They will meet with leading experts to better understand the realities of the climate crisis and with entrepreneurs and investors to explore solutions that can help us navigate the challenges of climate adaptation.
The District has made ambitious commitments to expanding tree cover and transitioning away from fossil fuel use. The dates for some of these milestones may seem far away, but how the city plans and builds today will determine if we actually hit those targets. This fourth season of “The Climate Divide” will explore the important choices our government needs to make now to be climate resilient and protect the residents most vulnerable to extreme weather. The episodes will report on this historically hot summer, a controversial gas pipe replacement plan and the challenges faced by trees growing in cities. New episodes coming August 7. In 2021, Greta Thunberg spoke to the youth climate movement at an event leading up to COP26. Her famous "Blah, Blah, Blah" speech contrasted all of the things world leaders had said about the climate crisis and what those same leaders had actually done to reduce emissions and create policies to mitigate and adapt to the climate crisis. Three years later, very little has changed. Of the 128 countries that set Net Zero goals, only five percent have taken the required first steps toward achieving those goals. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Elizabeth Kolbert joins the podcast this week to discuss how the climate crisis gets talked about by world leaders, activists, scientists, and the media may differ from the actual facts of the world's warming situation. Her new book "H is for Hope: Climate Change from A to Z" is a collection of 26 essays on various aspects of the climate crisis which tell the complete picture of what's going on, what's led us to this point, and where we could go from here. Like Elizabeth's previous books, such as "Field Notes from a Catastrophe", "The Sixth Extinction", and "Under a White Sky", "H is for Hope" is an insightful and sobering book from one of today's great climate writers. After a much-needed break, with time to heal and reflect, ZLORD's cohosts teZa and Carter Lord return, refreshed and renewed! With a new focus that was announced in the last episode: sharing about the environmental crisis. The conversation's energy is vivacious and soul-baring. Both hosts are in unique positions to disseminate their individual perspectives. Carter, who is a barefoot entrepreneur, has made two feature films honoring humankind's relationship to Nature, and currently created many YouTube shorts. teZa, a barefoot botanical illustrator, visionary author of many Nature wisdom books, is a born-again farm girl and former ex-pat who sailed Third World islands for a decade. Together, these 3-decade-long lovers of each other and planet Earth care about what matters most, always! See tezalord.com and carterlord.com

Three of our favorite segments from the week, in case you missed them. David Wallace-Wells on the 'New Climate Reality' (First) | Yuval Noah Harari on his new book for children, Unstoppable Us (Starts at 28:10) | Southern Rap and a Tribute to Takeoff (Starts at 56:40) If you don't subscribe to the Brian Lehrer Show on iTunes, you can do that here.
New York Times science writer David Wallace-Wells brings us some new thinking on global warming — and it isn't all bad. He's been called an alarmist in the past for his warnings about the consequences of dumping carbon into the atmosphere. But in a new article, Wallace-Wells writes that the cost of solar and wind energy has fallen dramatically, and scientists now say the pace of global warming in coming decades will be slower than previously forecast. Wallace-Wells says we're still in for painful, long-lasting changes to the world we inhabit, and nations will have to decide how to adapt to the new climate reality.TV critic David Bianculli reviews the new series Tulsa King starring Sylvester Stallone, and the new season of Yellowstone, starring Kevin Costner.
The world is warming, though not as much as some of the most apocalyptic predictions had warned. David Wallace-Wells, columnist for the New York Times Magazine and the author of The Uninhabitable Earth: Life After Warming (Tim Duggan Books, 2019), talks about how the world might respond, adapt, and grow in response to our future climate.
