Big Tobacco knows cigarettes are dead. They're sitting on cash, looking for growth — and cannabis is the obvious move. They're no longer silently watching from the sidelines. They're investing, expanding — some through public acquisitions, others through quieter plays. But one thing is clear: it's no secret anymore. Big Tobacco is here, leveraging its resources to capture market share quickly, while cannabis companies continue to struggle. And on the other side of the coin? The global unlock continues. With U.S. operators mostly stuck within national borders, Canadian companies are finally getting the green light to activate dormant facilities and feed growing EU demand. The life they taught her to build almost took her with it. For decades, Katina Barnes poured into families, mentored girls, launched programs, led ministries, and moved mountains with two-person teams. The world clapped. But no one asked what it cost. In this National Black Girl Month™ feature, Katina joins Felicia Ford and co-host Dr. Rikesha Fry Brown to name what many Black women are only starting to admit: that being “strong” is often a trap. That sometimes it takes collapsing in your own bed to realize what was never sustainable. That no matter how much good you're doing—you still deserve to live. This conversation is not a warning. It's a reckoning. If you've been performing strength while privately unraveling, If you've been told to push through while your body says no, If you've outgrown the expectations that once defined your worth— this episode is where you lay it down. You'll hear: How burnout disguises itself as achievement Why letting go of control isn't failure—it's survival What real boundaries sound like when they're held, not explained How to model wellness for the next generation without apology Why “being needed” can no longer be the measure of your value This is not about doing less. It's about doing what's yours to carry—and no more.
Some say that Martin Van Buren was one of themost remarkable politicians—not only of his time, but in American presidential history. Co-editor of the Martin Van Buren Papers, James M. Bradley writes this new biography of the 8th president of the United States . Van Buren was the first chief executive not born a British citizen, and the first to use the party system to chart his way from tavern-keeper's son to the pinnacle of power. Additionally, he was the principal architect of the party system and one of the founders of the Democratic Party, he came to dominate New York-then the most influential state in the Union-and was instrumental in electing Andrew Jackson president. Van Buren's skills as a political strategist were unparalleled—and was coined the "Little Magician"—winning him a series of high-profile offices: US senator, New York's governor, US secretary of state, US vice president, and finally theWhite House. In his rise to power, Van Buren sought consensus and conciliation, bending to the wishes of slave interests and complicit in the dispossession of America's Indigenous population, two of the darkest chapters in American history. This first full-scale portrait charts Van Buren's ascent from a tavern in the Hudson Valley to the presidency, concluding with his late-career involvement in an antislavery movement. Offering vivid profiles of the day's leading figures including Andrew Jackson, Henry Clay, John Calhoun, John Quincy Adams, DeWitt Clinton, and James Polk, Bradley's book depicts the struggle for power in the tumultuous decadesleading up to the Civil War.About the AuthorJames M. Bradley is co-editor of the Martin Van Buren Papers, based at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee. He is an Adjunct Instructor in the public history program at State University of New York at Albany and was the Senior Project Editor of Encyclopedia of New York City, published by Yale University Press. Something we often forget is how powerfully language shapes how we view each other and the world and how we interact as part of it. For that reason, it is a key part of how we help young people to understand their experiences, Both as a means of relating and communicating and as a set of skills that they acquire. This week it is a huge privilege to be able to welcome Kevin Belin onto the podcast who is the Director of the Diné Bizaad Institute and Navajo Language teacher at Navajo Preparatory School, in Navajo Nation in what is now known as the United States. Kevin is also owner of Hashké – Hozhó Design and Collaborative. Tódích'íinii nilį́įgo, Tł'ógí yashchíín, Ta'neeszhahnii dah bicheii, Chishí dah binálí. He is currently serving as Board member for Saad Kidilyé Language nest in Albuquerque. He also served as Adjunct Instructor with Diné College Navajo Cultural Arts Program. Kevin has been in the education field for over decade working with fellow teachers, consultants, and language instructors to perpetuate the Navajo Language and Culture through curriculum building, trainings, and presentations. Throughout the year, Kevin is consulted to work with youth and demonstrate hands on workshops in historical and cultural knowledge. “I don't consider myself an expert, but I am the bridge that connects the knowledge banks that come from our elders, to the young and discouraged learners, using modern approaches to language learning and scaffolded instruction, to understanding the complex concepts of Sa'ah Naaghei Bik'eh Hozho.” Kevin has been featured on Native America Calling, American Indian Republic, 21st Century Native leaders podcast and Indian Country Today as a cultural representative and is a Billy Mill's Running Strong Dreamstarter. “Teaching the Navajo Language to our young leaders and helping them understand the complexity that is the Diné way of life is a lifelong endeavor” (Kevin Belin).

Vice President Kamala Harris had her first campaign rally today as the presumptive Democratic nominee for president, in a suburb of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Today Harris locked up some more key endorsements, and the first poll taken since President Biden dropped out of the race shows Harris beating Donald Trump. Yes, the Reuters/Ipsos poll, the first one taken entirely since Sunday, gives Harris a 2-point lead over Trump, and it's a 4-point lead with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in the survey too. She seems to be getting a bit of a bounce from all the positive publicity, the party falling in line behind her as the nominee, and of course a record haul of almost a quarter of a billion dollars in campaign donations just since Sunday. Harris now has locked up enough delegates, including the entire California delegation, to secure the nomination on the first ballot next month in Chicago, and she will technically be nominated by virtual roll call at the end of next month. For more on where the campaign goes from here, and the lines of attack from both sides, KCBS insider Doug Sovern and KCBS Radio anchors Patti Reising and Bret Burkhart were joined by Steve Caplan, an Adjunct Instructor at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, and an expert on advertising, digital media and marketing in politics. I'm a really big believer in the idea of a unified RevOps function supporting all the go-to-market teams. But I'll be honest, sometimes it's a little discouraging when I look at how RevOps is done in practice, because outside of a few examples, I usually see essentially a sales ops function with a new name.So I wanted to find people who are actually leading a unified RevOps team in the real world and to understand how they're doing it and how it's working out for them. Today's guest is leading a very mature RevOps function at Electric and has a ton of practical insight to share. Thanks to Our SponsorMany thanks to the sponsor of this episode - Knak. Mark . Ruffalo, M.S.W., D.Psa., is a psychotherapist in private practice in Tampa, Florida, and serves as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine and Adjunct Instructor of Psychiatry at Tufts University School of Medicine. Bonnie Monteleone is the Founder & Director of Science, Research, and Academic Partnerships of the Plastic Ocean Project (POP) whose mission is finding science-based solutions to the global plastic pollution crisis. In 2019, she was working on a documentary about the North Atlantic Ocean. However, its plot quickly went from one about a complex, impacted ecosystem into a "who done it," following the death of a newborn critically endangered North Atlantic Right Whale that washed ashore. Was it manmade noise that caused the mother to lose her newborn, a ship strike, chemical or plastic pollution, was it discarded fishing gear, or overfishing? Bonnie discusses her work with plastics pollution and how it relates to this new documentary project she is undertaking. The threats the ocean and its creatures are facing are vast, but Bonnie dives deep into viable solutions that everyone can support to preserve the sounds of the sea and the marine life in it. This film, which asks what the oceans would say if they could talk, promises to inspire hope, not doom, but only if we listen. Bonnie's work has led her around the world collecting plastic marine samples including four of the five main ocean gyres and the Caribbean. She also works in the Environmental Studies Department at UNC Wilmington as an Adjunct Instructor teaching a Plastic Marine Debris Field Studies course and manages a lab working with student Directed Independent Studies (DIS) research. Highlights What happened to this baby Right Whale and what does that mean for the species as a whole? How can whales help mitigate climate change? If the oceans could talk, what would we learn? What YOU Can Do Bonnie talks a lot about solutions her organization is implementing as well as what different industries can do. But, here are some ideas on what YOU can do: Avoid single-use plastic. Support the documentary either monetarily, by spreading the word, or by seeing it when it comes to a festival near you. Filmmakers (and wanna-be filmmakers) contribute your ocean footage to the film so they have less of a need to go out and film (and use fossil fuels to do so). Spread the word about the danger these whales are in so people are more likely to support ideas and legislation that protect them. ResourcesInformation about the documentary, If the Ocean Could Talk. As I may be the target audience for Diseased Cinema: Plagues, Pandemics and Zombies in American Movies (Edinburgh UP, 2023), I really enjoyed interviewing Robert Alpert, Merle Eisenberg, and Lee Mordechai. Their co-authored book explores the politics of American films about disease and zombies. We had a wide-ranging, thoughtful, and funny conversation about pandemics, capitalism, academic collaboration, apocalyptic fiction, and the importance of family. Robert Alpert is an Adjunct Instructor at Fordham University where he has taught courses on computers and robots in film, movies and the American experience, and media law. He has written extensively on movies, including on directors, such as Chaplin, Meyers, and Bigelow, as well as on other topics, such as gender, the Hollywood idiom, and the politics of science fiction. His publications can be found in Jump Cut, Senses of Cinema, and CineAction. Alpert received his M.F.A. in Film from Columbia University. He also received a J.D. from New York University and practiced intellectual property law for over 30 years. Merle Eisenberg is an Assistant Professor of History at Oklahoma State University and a founding faculty member of the Oklahoma State Pandemic Center. He has published articles in journals including The American Historical Review and Past & Present. His work has also appeared in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, which received press coverage in CNN, Fox News, USA Today, and the NY Post. He has also appeared on CNN to discuss historical pandemics and regularly teaches courses on plagues and pandemics in history. Along with Lee Mordechai, he is the co-founder and co-host of the Infectious Historians podcast. Lee Mordechai is a Senior Lecturer at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Associate Director of Princeton University's Climate Change and History Research Initiative. He has published over twenty academic articles, including two in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and in The American Historical Review and Past & Present. He has taught several courses on epidemics, including a seminar that used a draft of Diseased Cinema: Plagues, Pandemics and Zombies in American Movies. Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode, violinist Moni Simeonov shares how he integrates daily health and wellness practices into his life as a professional violinist. Additionally, we discuss how to find balance, practice techniques and strategies, inner development and reflection, the importance of practicing self-doubt as much as we practice absolute self-expression free of critical thought, and so much more.
