New infections aboard a cruise ship have thrust the hantavirus into the global spotlight. Hantavirus infections remain rare, with only about 1,000 cases reported in the U.S. in more than 30 years. What the world knows about the illness started in 1993 on the Navajo Nation. After struggling to identify the dangerous respiratory illness, medical researchers gained crucial insights from Navajo elders, noting that traditional oral histories had long associated spikes in deer mouse populations — driven by specific rainfall patterns — with deadly disease. That knowledge directly informed the scientific discovery of what we know now as the Sin Nombre virus. The discovery also offers a lesson in public notification of diseases. Early media reports labelled the pathogen as the “Navajo flu”, which stigmatized the community for years afterward. We'll look at the history of the hantavirus and the current efforts to prevent its spread. When High School Musical 2 premiered on Disney Channel in August 2007, it shattered records with over 17 million viewers tuning in on its first night — making it the most-watched cable movie at the time. Trading school hallways for summer jobs at a posh country club, the film dives deeper into the personal growth of its characters, especially Troy Bolton. As he's tempted by opportunities that could shape his future, he starts to drift from his friends and Gabriella, leading to heartfelt moments like “Gotta Go My Own Way” and the now-iconic (and meme-worthy) “Bet On It.” With a vibrant setting, high-energy choreography, and a soundtrack that defined a generation, the movie balances summer fun with themes of loyalty, ambition, and staying true to yourself. What sets High School Musical 2 apart from the original is its emotional depth and visual glow-up. From Sharpay's hilariously over-the-top “Fabulous” to the sun-soaked golf course showdowns, the movie feels bigger and bolder while still holding onto the sincerity that made the first film a hit. For many fans, it remains the best in the trilogy - not just for the catchy songs, but for how it captures the confusing transition between teenage fun and adult choices. At its core, it's a feel-good reminder that success means little if you lose yourself along the way.   Takeaways: Unlike the first movie, High School Musical 2 explores personal ambition and integrity. Troy's internal conflict between chasing opportunity and staying loyal to his friends adds emotional depth that resonates with viewers growing up alongside the characters. The entire movie takes place in a wealthy country club, with Troy and his friends working as staff while Sharpay enjoys every luxury. This creates a visible tension between socioeconomic classes - particularly when Troy is offered elite opportunities at the expense of his peer group. The summer setting shows that learning and personal growth don't pause when school is out. How we support students in extended learning environments (internships, summer programs, real-world exposure) can have lasting impact. Gabriella choosing to walk away from what doesn't align with her values is a powerful example of student agency. When schools give students meaningful choices in their learning and extracurriculars, they're more likely to take ownership of their growth.     About Erin Jennings, IIDA, AIA, NCIDQ, NCARB: Erin Jennings, IIDA, AIA, NCIDQ, NCARB is an Architect, Registered Interior Designer, and Principal for Luminaut, believing that design is just as much about the way something looks as it is about how it functions. Her commitment to that philosophy has yielded the award-winning designs of numerous university, library, and k-12 projects. Her design efforts are motivated by a desire to create conscious impact on the end-user experience. Community environments are the spaces in which Erin's leadership skills and her interdisciplinary approach have had the most positive influence on the greatest number of people.  She's highly involved in industry and community organizations both regionally and nationally, and through regular attendance and speaking engagements at thought-leadership conferences.  She currently serves on advisory boards, closely monitors building trends, space planning techniques, and continually studies and tests innovative products, all while keeping the protection of the public at the forefront of mind. As the Immediate Past President of the International Board of Directors for CIDQ, she closely collaborates with industry regulatory partners from NCARB, CLARB, and NCEES.  She has demonstrated industry advocacy experience as a Past President for the IIDA Indiana Chapter and Past Chair for the AIA National Interior Architecture Knowledge Community.  She's knowledgeable, meticulous, and advocates relentlessly on behalf of her clients and their end-users. Erin's continued deep-rooted passion subsists in mentoring young professionals, and most recently, teaching students in the collegiate setting. As an Adjunct Instructor of Interior Design at the College of Architecture & Planning at Ball State University, she strives to bridge the disciplines of architecture and interior design, not to advocate that one can do another, but to advocate the value-add when the two work in harmony with one another.  Erin has committed her life and career to advancing the design industry. From her dual degreed experience at Ball State, to the licensing and certification process for both interior design and architecture, she strives to engage at the highest level. Her main focus: Fostering passion and compassion through elevating the human experience within the built learning environment.     Learn More About Erin Jennings, IIDA, AIA, NCIDQ, NCARB: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/erin-jennings-iida-aia-ncidq-ncarb-3a23b111/   Learn More About Luminaut: Website: https://luminaut.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/luminautarchitecture/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/luminaut/       Connect with Host, Carla Cummins: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/carla-cummins-01449659/   Learn More About Kay-Twelve: Website: https://kay-twelve.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/kay-twelve-com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kay_twelve/       Episode 238 of the Better Learning Podcast Kevin Stoller is the host of the Better Learning Podcast and Co-Founder of Kay-Twelve, a national leader for educational furniture. The life they taught her to build almost took her with it. In this National Black Girl Month™ feature, Katina joins Felicia Ford and co-host Dr. Rikesha Fry Brown to name what many Black women are only starting to admit: that being “strong” is often a trap. That sometimes it takes collapsing in your own bed to realize what was never sustainable. That no matter how much good you're doing—you still deserve to live. This conversation is not a warning. It's a reckoning. If you've been performing strength while privately unraveling, If you've been told to push through while your body says no, If you've outgrown the expectations that once defined your worth— this episode is where you lay it down. You'll hear: How burnout disguises itself as achievement Why letting go of control isn't failure—it's survival What real boundaries sound like when they're held, not explained How to model wellness for the next generation without apology Why “being needed” can no longer be the measure of your value This is not about doing less. It's about doing what's yours to carry—and no more.

Some say that Martin Van Buren was one of themost remarkable politicians—not only of his time, but in American presidential history. Co-editor of the Martin Van Buren Papers, James M. Bradley writes this new biography of the 8th president of the United States . Van Buren was the first chief executive not born a British citizen, and the first to use the party system to chart his way from tavern-keeper's son to the pinnacle of power. Additionally, he was the principal architect of the party system and one of the founders of the Democratic Party, he came to dominate New York-then the most influential state in the Union-and was instrumental in electing Andrew Jackson president. Van Buren's skills as a political strategist were unparalleled—and was coined the "Little Magician"—winning him a series of high-profile offices: US senator, New York's governor, US secretary of state, US vice president, and finally theWhite House. In his rise to power, Van Buren sought consensus and conciliation, bending to the wishes of slave interests and complicit in the dispossession of America's Indigenous population, two of the darkest chapters in American history. This first full-scale portrait charts Van Buren's ascent from a tavern in the Hudson Valley to the presidency, concluding with his late-career involvement in an antislavery movement. Offering vivid profiles of the day's leading figures including Andrew Jackson, Henry Clay, John Calhoun, John Quincy Adams, DeWitt Clinton, and James Polk, Bradley's book depicts the struggle for power in the tumultuous decadesleading up to the Civil War.About the AuthorJames M. Bradley is co-editor of the Martin Van Buren Papers, based at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee. Forces for Nature
Giving a Voice to North Atlantic Right Whales with Bonnie Monteleone, Ep. 75

Bonnie Monteleone is the Founder & Director of Science, Research, and Academic Partnerships of the Plastic Ocean Project (POP) whose mission is finding science-based solutions to the global plastic pollution crisis.  In 2019, she was working on a documentary about the North Atlantic Ocean. However,  its plot quickly went from one about a complex, impacted ecosystem into a "who done it," following the death of a newborn critically endangered North Atlantic Right Whale that washed ashore. Was it manmade noise that caused the mother to lose her newborn, a ship strike, chemical or plastic pollution, was it discarded fishing gear, or overfishing? Bonnie discusses her work with plastics pollution and how it relates to this new documentary project she is undertaking. The threats the ocean and its creatures are facing are vast, but Bonnie dives deep into viable solutions that everyone can support to preserve the sounds of the sea and the marine life in it. This film, which asks what the oceans would say if they could talk, promises to inspire hope, not doom, but only if we listen. Bonnie's work has led her around the world collecting plastic marine samples including four of the five main ocean gyres and the Caribbean. She also works in the Environmental Studies Department at UNC Wilmington as an Adjunct Instructor teaching a Plastic Marine Debris Field Studies course and manages a lab working with student Directed Independent Studies (DIS) research. Highlights What happened to this baby Right Whale and what does that mean for the species as a whole? How can whales help mitigate climate change? If the oceans could talk, what would we learn?  What YOU Can Do Bonnie talks a lot about solutions her organization is implementing as well as what different industries can do. But, here are some ideas on what YOU can do: Avoid single-use plastic. Support the documentary either monetarily, by spreading the word, or by seeing it when it comes to a festival near you.  Filmmakers (and wanna-be filmmakers) contribute your ocean footage to the film so they have less of a need to go out and film (and use fossil fuels to do so). Spread the word about the danger these whales are in so people are more likely to support ideas and legislation that protect them.  ResourcesInformation about the documentary, If the Ocean Could Talk.  Plastic Ocean Project (POP) Facebook  POP Instagram   POP LinkedIn   Use discount code EXGREEN20 and receive a 20% discount for a full week or single-day registration to the EarthX Congress of Conferences this April! What is critical race theory and why does it make some people so uncomfortable? Join us as today's guest, Dr. Joanne Lunceford, explains the legacy of slavery and the systems that were built during that era that are still with us almost 200 years after the Emancipation Proclamation.   Dr. Lunceford has a deep understanding that while no one currently alive has ever owned or been a slave, the legacy of those institutions are still impacting people today.
