It's Monday, April 29th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Nigerian Muslims kill 3 Christians in Benue State Fulani Muslim herdsmen killed three Christians last week in Benue State, Nigeria, reports Morning Star News. Alfred Omakwu, a local city councilman, said the herdsmen killed one Christian on April 20th in Otukpo County, after killing two other believers on April 18th in the Entepka District. Andrew Mamedu, country director of Action Aid, an international humanitarian organization, said that the incessant attacks on Christians in Benue State, Nigeria have displaced 1.4 million people. He said, “With what is happening in Benue state, people may not have villages to retire to when they grow old. If we fail to act now, I am afraid that by 2030 we would have lost a generation, and it may take 50 years to recover from it.” According to Open Doors, Nigeria is the sixth most dangerous country worldwide in which to be a Christian. Stabbed Orthodox bishop denounces Australian censorship Assyrian Orthodox Bishop Mar Emmanuel, who was stabbed whle preaching on April 15th in Sydney Australia by a 15-year-old Muslim young man who yelled “Allah Akbar,” has joined his voice with Elon Musk in demanding that the video of the attack be kept online, reports LifeSiteNews.com. On April 22, an Australian federal court ordered X, formerly Twitter, to remove all posts that contained the viral video of the Islamic attack on the Orthodox bishop, granting the request of Australia eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant, who had demanded that the video be taken down worldwide. On Wednesday, the injunction against showing the video was extended by Justice Geoffrey Kennett until May 10 when a final hearing will be held to determine whether the content can be prohibited permanently worldwide. Musk has taken issue with the injunction, although following it temporarily. According to the tech giant, the Australian regulator had demanded that X “globally withhold these posts or face a daily fine of $785,000.” On Tuesday, Musk addressed the overreach of the Australian government and claims that the video was somehow “misinformation.” He said, “The Australian people want the truth. X is the only one standing up for their rights. Our concern is that if ANY country is allowed to censor content for ALL countries, which is what the Australian ‘eSafety Commissar' is demanding, then what is to stop any country from controlling the entire internet? We have already censored the content in question for Australia, pending legal appeal, and it is stored only on servers in the USA.” Rumble CEO Chris Pavlovski said he “stands united” with Musk and X in the fight against the Australian censorship of the video. Biden poked fun at Trump Appearing at the White House Correspondents' Dinner at the Washington Hilton on Saturday, President Joe Biden addressed his age and made Donald Trump, his Republican presidential opponent, the target of a number of his jokes, reports CNN. BIDEN: “The 2024 election is in full swing. And yes, age is an issue. I'm a grown man running against the six-year-old. “I really feel great. I'm campaigning all over the country, Pennsylvania, Georgia, North Carolina. I've always done well in the original 13 colonies. “Age is the only thing we have in common. My Vice President actually endorses me.” (cheers) Saturday Night Live comedian roasted Biden and media Colin Jost, the co-host of “Weekend Update” on NBC's Saturday Night Live and the headliner for the event, took aim at President Biden in a couple of his jokes. JOST: “I was excited to be up here on stage with President Biden tonight, mostly to see if I could figure out where Obama was pulling the strings from. (laughter) “I have to admit it's not easy following President Biden. I mean, it's not always easy following what he's saying, like. (laughter) “My Weekend Update co-anchor, Michael Che, was going to join me here tonight. But, in solidarity with President Biden, I decided to lose all my Black support.” (laughs and jeers) And Jost made fun of the White House correspondents, most of whom seem more committed to liberal ideology than a balanced pursuit of the truth. JOST: “Like many of you here tonight, I pretend to do news on TV.” (laughter and jeers) Pro-Life Democrat runs ‘graphic' abortion ad during ‘Today' show Last Wednesday, a pro-life Democrat running for president aired an eye-opening ad on national television exposing NBC's “Today” show viewers to the horrors of late-term abortion. Terrisa Bukovinac, president and founder of Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising, confirmed Wednesday via X that her ad, which included disturbing footage of late-term aborted infants, aired on NBC, reaching seven million people. (You can see it for yourself through a special link in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com.) Listen to the audio. BUKOVINAC: “I'm a secular progressive activist. Last year, I recovered the remains of these five babies from an all-term abortion center in Washington, DC. These are the faces of a genocide supported by Joe Biden and my own Democratic Party. “We can provide for the working class and resist this extremism. I am challenging you to never vote for a pro-choice Democrat again. I'm Terrisa Bukovinac, pro-life Democrat running for President of the United States. And I approved this message.” Psalm 127:3 says, “Children are a heritage from the LORD, offspring a reward from Him.” Bukovanic, a self-described atheist, told The Christian Post that she never intended to win the Democratic presidential nomination. Rather, she launched her long-shot bid so she would have a platform to expose the evils of abortion to her fellow liberals. Comedian Russel Brand got baptized And finally, actor and comedian Russell Brand announced on April 26th that he planned to get baptized as a Christian on April 29th, reports Fox News Digital. BRAND: “This Sunday, I'm taking the plunge. I'm getting baptized, an opportunity to leave the past behind and be reborn in Christ's name, like it says in Galatians. “I know a lot of people are sort of cynical about the increasing interest in Christianity, and the return to God. But, to me, it's obvious. As meaning deteriorates in the modern world, as our value systems and institutions crumble, all of us become increasingly aware that there is this eerily familiar awakening and beckoning figure that we've all known all of our lives. … For me, it's very exciting.” Galatians 3:26 says, “So, in Christ Jesus, you are all children of God through faith.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Monday, April 29th in the year of our Lord 2024. It's Monday, February 19th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Nigerian Muslims killed 8,222 Christians last year Over 8,000 Christians were reportedly killed in Nigeria, Africa in 2023 amid a rise in attacks, abductions and killings in recent years, reports The Christian Post. The International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law reports that at least 8,222 Christians were killed across Nigeria from January 2023 to January 2024. It attributes the deaths to various Muslim extremist groups, including radicalized Fulani herdsmen, Boko Haram, and Nigerian security forces. Nigerian States like Benue, Plateau, Kaduna, and Niger bore the brunt of these attacks, with thousands of Christians abducted and hundreds of churches destroyed or attacked. Revelation 6:9-10 says, “When Jesus opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained. They called out in a loud voice, “How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until You judge the inhabitants of the Earth and avenge our blood?” Putin critic Alexei Navalny dies in Arctic Circle Russian jail Russia's most significant opposition leader for the past decade, Alexei Navalny, has died in an Arctic Circle jail, reports the BBC. Navalny was moved to one of Russia's toughest penal colonies late last year. According to the Daily Mail, the prison is located in a region where the temperatures are a bone-chilling 25-degrees below 0. Plus, the 1,085 of Russia's worst criminals are tortured with electric shocks, beatings, and confined to tiny cells with just a hole for a toilet. Navalny was President Vladimir Putin's most vociferous critic and had been serving 19 years on extremism charges that were widely seen as politically motivated. His wife Yulia has appealed to the international community "to help punish this regime.” One of Navalny's closest allies, Ivan Zhdanov, the Anti-Corruption Foundation chief, said it was "highly likely" that Navalny had been killed and that a "murder had actually happened.” Trump fined $354 million for fraud and deceptive business practices Last Friday, the judge overseeing Donald Trump's civil fraud trial issued him a $354.8 million penalty and barred him from running a business in New York for three years, reports Politico.com. The judge found that for roughly a decade Trump orchestrated massive business fraud by falsely inflating his net worth to obtain favorable rates from banks and insurers. The verdict, laid out in a 92-page ruling, strikes at the heart of an aspect of Trump's identity that he harnessed in his 2016 presidential run: his personal wealth and his success as a businessman. Justice Arthur Engoron wrote that Trump, and the other defendants in the case, showed a “complete lack of contrition and remorse” that “borders on pathological.” The penalty caps a three-month trial in a lawsuit brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James who campaigned on a “get Trump” platform. Listen to the comment of James after the verdict. JAMES: “Donald Trump engaged in deceptive business practices and tremendous fraud. Donald Trump falsely, knowingly inflated his net worth by billions of dollars to unjustly enrich himself, his family, and to cheat the system. Donald Trump may have authored the Art of the Deal, but he perfected ‘the art of the steal.' “This long running fraud was intentional, egregious, illegal, he did all of this with the help of the other defendants his two adult sons and senior executives at the Trump Organization. “After 11 weeks of trial, we showed the staggering extent of his fraud and exactly how Donald Trump and the other defendants deceived banks, insurance companies, and other financial institutions for their own personal gain. We proved just how much Donald Trump, his family, and his company unjustly benefited from his fraud.” Trump reacts to New York verdict Speaking from Mar-A-Lago, former President Donald Trump reacted to the New York verdict. TRUMP: “A crooked New York state judge just ruled that I have to pay a fine of $355 million for having built a perfect company. Great cash, great buildings, great everything. “It's mostly talking about New York where we have a totally corrupt Attorney General. She campaigned on the fact that ‘I will get Trump. I will get Trump.' Everybody's seen it. Letitia James. It all comes out of Biden. It's a witch hunt against his political opponent, the likes of which our country has never seen before. You see it in third world countries, banana republics. “You build a great company. There was no fraud. The banks all got their money, 100%. They love Trump. They testified that Trump is great. Great customer.” Senator Joe Manchin will not run for president as independent Democrat Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia announced on February 16th that he will not run for the White House as an independent. MANCHIN: “I will not be seeking a third-party run. I will not be involved in a presidential run. “I will be involved in making sure that we secure a president that has the knowledge and has the passion and has the ability to bring this country together.” Kids Online Safety Act likely to pass Senate And finally, Senators Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat from Connecticut and Marsha Blackburn, a Republican from Tennessee, reintroduced the 64-page Kids Online Safety Act with the support of 62 senators, including Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, meaning that the bill will be filibuster-proof when it comes to the floor, reports Fox News. It will restrict content for minors that promotes substance abuse, the promotion of suicide, sexual exploitation, and alcohol abuse. It would also mandate that social media companies implement certain controls to limit screen time and limit access to potentially harmful user profiles. In Matthew 18:6, Jesus said, “If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in Me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Monday, February 19th in the year of our Lord 2024. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: How we work, #2: We look at specific opportunities, not just general interventions, published by GiveWell on November 12, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This post is the second in a multi-part series, covering how GiveWell works and what we fund. The first post, on cost-effectiveness, is here. Through these posts, we hope to give a better understanding of our research and decision-making. Author: Isabel Arjmand Looking forward, not just backward When we consider recommending funding, we don't just want to know whether a program has generally been cost-effective in the past - we want to know how additional funding would be used. People sometimes think of GiveWell as recommending entire programs or organizations. This was more accurate in GiveWell's early days, but now we tend to narrow in on specific opportunities. Rather than asking whether it is cost-effective to deliver long-lasting insecticide-treated nets in general, we ask more specific questions, such as whether it is cost-effective to fund net distributions in 2023 in Benue, Plateau, and Zamfara states, Nigeria, given the local burden of malaria and the costs of delivering nets in those states. Geographic factors affecting cost-effectiveness The same program can vary widely in cost-effectiveness across locations. The burden of a disease in a particular place is often a key factor in determining overall cost-effectiveness. All else equal, it's much more impactful to deliver vitamin A supplements in areas with high rates of vitamin A deficiency than in areas where almost everyone consumes sufficient vitamin A as part of their diet. As another example, we estimate it costs roughly the same amount for the Against Malaria Foundation to deliver an insecticide-treated net in Chad as it does in Guinea (about $4 in both locations). But, we estimate that malaria-attributable deaths of young children in the absence of nets would be roughly 5 times higher in Guinea than in Chad (roughly 8.8 deaths per 1,000 per year versus roughly 1.7 per 1,000), which leads AMF's program to be much more cost-effective in Guinea. This map from Our World in Data gives a sense of how deaths from malaria vary worldwide.[3] Because cost-effectiveness varies with geography, we ask questions specific to the countries or regions where a program would take place. When we were investigating an opportunity to fund water chlorination in Malawi, for example, we wanted to know: How does baseline mortality from poor water quality in Malawi compare with that in the regions where the key studies on water chlorination took place? What is the overall morbidity burden from diarrhea in Malawi? Might people be more or less likely to use chlorinated water in this area than in the areas where the key studies took place? What does it cost to serve one person with in-line chlorination for one year? We calculate this, in part, by estimating how many people are served by each device. What proportion of the population is under the age of five? This is important to our calculations because we think young children are disproportionately susceptible to death from diarrhea. What is the baseline level of water treatment in the absence of this program? Where relevant, we also consider implementation challenges caused by security concerns or other contextual factors. Why do cost-effective funding gaps sometimes go unfilled? People are often surprised that some high-impact funding gaps, like the ones GiveWell aims to fund, aren't already filled. Of course, many high-impact opportunities are already supported by other funders, like Gavi or the Global Fund, to name just a couple examples. When we see remaining gaps, we think about how our grant might affect other funders' decisions, and whether another funder would step in to fill a particular gap if we didn't.[4] The...

Ask your smart speaker to play “Catholic News,” or listen every morning wherever you get podcasts. www.catholicnewsagency.com - At least 94 people reportedly have died in a series of deadly attacks on Christian communities throughout Holy Week in Benue state in north-central Nigeria, an ominous sign of escalating violence blamed on Muslim militias in the country's Middle Belt region. On April 2, armed men reportedly stormed a Palm Sunday service at a Pentecostal church in Akenawe-Tswarev in Logo county, Benue state, killing a young boy and kidnapping the pastor and other worshipers. Three days later, on April 5, gunmen killed at least 50 people in the village of Umogidi, located in Utokpo county, a Catholic stronghold in western Benue, the Associated Press reported. More recently, on the night of Good Friday, dozens were killed when Muslim gunmen raided an elementary school building in the village of Ngban that serves as a shelter for about 100 displaced Christian farmers and their families. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/254060/holy-week-attacks-on-christian-communities-in-nigeria-leave-nearly-100-dead An arrest has been made in connection with the vandalism of Saint Paulinus Catholic Church in Syracuse, Nebraska, that occurred on Palm Sunday weekend. Travis Ross, 32, was arrested April 6 by the Otoe County Sheriff's Office after video evidence and witnesses led authorities to name him a suspect. Father Ryan Salisbury, Saint Paulinus' pastor, told CNA April 3 that when he walked into the church on April 1, he discovered that the altar had been tipped over, a statue desecrated, and several other objects damaged. A Sacred Heart of Jesus statue was also broken beyond repair and candlesticks were damaged. as well as the altar stone. The damage amounted to $5,000, he said. The tabernacle and the Eucharist remained untouched. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/254058/arrest-made-in-connection-with-vandalism-of-nebraska-catholic-church Today the Church celebrates Saint Stanislaus of Krakow, the 11th-century bishop and martyr who died for the faith at the hands of King Boleslaus II. Good afternoon, I'm _____ with today's episode of EZ News. **Tai-Ex opening ** The Tai-Ex opened up 45-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 15,856 on turnover of $1.7-billion N-T. The market lost ground on Thursday, as investors turned their attention to upcoming earnings reports and other economic indicators. **Leofoo Village Fined Following Baboon Escape ** The Hsinchu County Government says it has fined the Leofoo Village Theme Park 50,000 N-T for negligence that resulted in the escape of one of its baboons. The county government's Agriculture Bureau says the theme park's operator failed to realize that an animal had escaped, failed to notify local authorities after discovering the baboon was missing and also failed to properly assist authorities in their search for the animal. The fine comes after the Forestry Bureau announced that it has given the Leofoo Village Theme Park one month to improve its baboon facility and six months to finish microchipping and registering all of its baboons The case is also still being investigated by prosecutors - and the park could face further fines and charges. **New Round of Online Monkeypox Vaccines Registration to Begin on Monday ** The Centers for Disease Control says online registration for a new round of monkeypox vaccine will begin next Monday. According to C-D-C Deputy Director-General Philip Luo, the online registration service will be available from Monday through Friday and the vaccine doses will be administered at 48 designated hospitals islandwide. As of Thursday, the C-D-C had recorded 23 confirmed cases, of which 16 were locally transmitted and seven imported. **Nigeria Village Clashes Leave 50 Dead ** Authorities say at least 50 people have died after two attacks on a village in north-central Nigeria. Local officials say three people had been killed on Tuesday, then gunmen returned to thei village in Benue state and killed 47 others when they opened fire at a market. While there was no claim of responsibility, authorities said suspicion fell on local herdsmen, who have clashed in the past with farmers over land disputes in north-central Nigeria. Benue state has been one of the hardest hit in the decades-long clashes between agrarian communities and nomadic cattle herders in the West African country. **US Republicans Oust Dem for Gun Protest ** Tennessee Republicans have voted to expel their Democratic colleague Justin Jones from the state's House of Representatives after he, and two other Democrats, joined a protest in favor of stronger gun regulation on the chamber floor last week. The demonstration came just days after six people, including three children, were killed at a Nashville elementary school. Lawmaker are now debating expelling the other two lawmakers. Toni Waterman has more. **Montenegro Elections Oust Djukanovic ** Official results have confirmed a crushing defeat for Montenegro's long-time leader Milo Djukanovic in a weekend presidential election. That marks his departure from the small Balkan state's political scene after more than 30 years in power. The state electoral commission said Thursday that Jakov Milatovic, an expert in economics but a political novice, won Sunday's presidential runoff. Djukanovic led Montenegro to independence from Serbia in 2006 and to NATO membership in 2017, despite strong opposition from former Slavic ally Russia. Milatovic won around 59% of Sunday's vote, while Djukanovic had about 41%, according to the final official results. A daily news briefing from Catholic News Agency, powered by artificial intelligence. Ask your smart speaker to play “Catholic News,” or listen every morning wherever you get podcasts. www.catholicnewsagency.com - Pope Francis said Wednesday that everyone in the Church is equal in dignity, thus a focus on hierarchical advancement is “pure paganism.” “Within the framework of the unity of the mission, the diversity of charisms and ministries must not give rise, within the ecclesial body, to privileged categories,” the pope said at his March 15 general audience in Saint Peter's Square.“There is no promotion here, and when you conceive of the Christian life as an advancement, that the one above commands others, because he has succeeded in climbing, that is not Christianity,” he said. “That is pure paganism.” At his weekly meeting with the public, Francis reflected on the call to apostleship as part of the larger theme of evangelization. The pope said if you see someone in a “high” position in the Church who is vain, you should pray for “the poor guy,” because he has not understood his vocation. “Listening, humbling one's self, being at the service of others: This is serving,” he continued. “This is being Christian. This is being apostle.” https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/253867/pope-francis-a-christian-life-based-on-achieving-higher-positions-is-pure-paganism Recent terrorist raids in Benue, a predominantly Catholic state in north-central Nigeria, are getting scant mention in the country's news. Six counties in the Middle Belt state have seen deadly attacks by Fulani militants since the election, according to Mike Uba, the county chairman of Guma, adjacent to the state capital of Makurdi. The affected counties are both in the north and southern borders of the state. One of the most recent attacks, on March 7, left at least 20 residents dead in the village of Tse Jor after about 40 attackers with machetes arrived on motorbikes and slashed defenseless men, women, and children for at least two hours, Helen Tikyaa, an aid worker employed by the Catholic Diocese of Makurdi, told CNA. Tikyaa said she drove to the village during the attack but dared not go in until the killers had departed. Benue has more than 1 million people struggling to survive in makeshift camps due to terrorist raids that have depopulated large areas and prevented hundreds of thousands of small farmers from accessing their four-acre farms. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/253873/waves-of-attacks-displace-catholic-natives-in-central-nigeria Today, the Church celebrates Saint Clement Hofbauer, an 18th and 19th-century saint who oversaw the founding of many Redemptorist monasteries, and who is the patron saint of Vienna, Austria.
Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission has warned that the general election could be canceled if nothing is done to tackle insecurity in the country. INEC chairman Mahmood Yakubu says the commission was ensuring that election personnel, materials, and process have the highest level of protection especially "given the current insecurity challenges in various parts of the country. He says if it was not dealt with decisively, the insecurity could ultimately culminate in the cancellation or postponement of elections in sufficient constituencies to hinder declaration of elections results and precipitate a constitutional crisis". He called for the strengthening of security outfits to ensure the polls are held successfully across the country. Five south-eastern states and four north-western states, Lagos, Kano, Benue, Plateau, Taraba, and Borno states were named as areas likely to witness election-related chaos. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4090160/advertisement
It's Thursday, December 29th, A.D. 2022. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Nigerian Muslim scourge continues Islamic militants carried out attacks on Christians in multiple states in Nigeria recently. On December 17, Muslim Fulani herdsmen killed three Christians who were working on a farm. The attackers had been destroying villagers' crops as well. A local official said, “These are some of the terrible things farmers in Benue state have been facing over the years.” On December 19, members of the Islamic State West Africa Province destroyed homes, livestock, and crops in a Christian village in Borno state. The attack came after militants killed a pregnant Christian woman in the same area. Nigeria leads the world in deadly violence against Christians according to Open Doors. Sweden halted puberty blockers for minors Sweden continues to cut back on providing so-called “transgender treatments” to children, reports CBN News. The country's National Board of Health and Welfare previously put an end to prescribing puberty blockers for minors. On December 16, the national board announced their latest guidelines on the subject. The health agency urged caution when treating people pretending to be the opposite sex, acknowledging “a lack of knowledge about the results of the care.” Another factor driving their recommendation for caution was the “documented occurrence of detransition.” Bulgaria: Evangelical churches “dangerous,” cause “mental disorders” The European Court of Human Rights condemned the Bulgarian government this month for interfering with Christians' religious freedom. In 2008, the eastern European country sent schools a public notice calling Evangelical Protestant churches “dangerous religious sects” that could cause “mental disorders” in their members. Municipal authorities were trying to combat “religious missionaries around the Easter celebration.” Alliance Defending Freedom represented two Bulgarian pastors in a case against the government. After the court victory, Pastor Zhivko Tonchev said, “We are thrilled that the European Court of Human Rights has recognized our fundamental right to religious freedom just in time for Christmas.” Twitter files reveal suppression of COVID information On Monday, the latest batch of Twitter files came out. They expose how the U.S. government pressured the social media company to suppress information about COVID-19. Elon Musk is releasing the files as the new owner, showing how the company operated before he took control. The files show the Trump administration wanted Twitter to suppress information about panic buying during the pandemic while the Biden administration wanted to suppress anti-COVID-shot information. Twitter censored true, but inconvenient COVID-19 messages and discredited doctors and other experts who disagreed with U.S. government policy. During a recent podcast interview, Musk said peoples' suspicions about Twitter's internal operations turned out to be true. MUSK: “I mean to be totally frank almost every conspiracy theory that people had about Twitter turned out to be true. (laughs) Is there a conspiracy theory about Twitter that didn't turn out to be true? So far, they've all turned out to be true.” Luke 12:2 says, “Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known.” States implemented 50 anti-abortion laws A new report from the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute found U.S. states implemented 50 anti-abortion laws this year. The report said abortions are unavailable in 14 states now after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. The number of anti-abortion laws is down this year from a high of 108 last year. The report noted, “However, many of the laws passed this year are near-total abortion bans; combined with the implementation of pre-Roe laws and trigger bans that had been enacted in previous years, these laws have restricted abortion access for millions of people.” Indiana Grinch didn't have the last word And finally, police officers in South Bend, Indiana saved Christmas for a family who had been robbed on Christmas Eve. A “real-life Grinch” broke into the family's home and stole their food and all their Christmas presents. Immediately, officers contacted a local toy drive and were back with boxes of presents and food for the family. The mother and her three children were overjoyed with the surprise. Officer Brian Meador told Fox News they were happy to do something positive. MEADOR: “It's why we do what we do. So many times you see just the negative, but this was an opportunity for us to do something positive. To see those children's reaction, that that makes everything worthwhile.” Acts 20:35 says, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Close And that's The World View in 5 Minutes on this Thursday, December 29th in the year of our Lord 2022. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: On Stateless Societies, published by Martin Sustrik on December 27, 2021 on LessWrong. Acemoglu & Robinson in their book The Narrow Corridor use Tiv people as an example of a stateless society. The statelessness among Tiv was achieved by penalizing or eliminating those who grew successful or powerful enough to become an eventual condensation point for creation of a state. The traditional mechanism for doing so was accusing such people of witchcraft. This, on one hand, left Tiv without the state and the associated oppression, but, on the other hand, kept them dirt-poor. That sounds all right on the theoretical level, but what made me really visualize the process was a story about how Shaka Zulu, the builder of the Zulu Kingdom, broke the power of stateless elements in the traditional Zulu society. When a hammerhead crane flew over his kraal and a porcupine wandered into it, when a crow perched on a fence and began to utter human words he summoned a team of witch doctors led by a woman called Nobela: The Zulus were lined up and Nobela and here associates began "smelling out" the witches who had brought on the evil omens. They picked on prosperous people. One had grown rich through frugality. Another had put cattle manure on his lands as fertilizer, producing a bountiful harvest much greater than his neighbors'. Yet another was a fine stock breeder who had picked the best bulls and taken great care of his stock and as a result had seen a prodigious expansion of his herds. Shaka took offense, accused the witch doctors of false accusations and demanded that two of them must die in compensation. The witch doctors panicked and asked Shaka for protection. He agreed, conditional on that they "won't cheat any more". That way he broke the power of the institution of witch doctors. Another interesting data point about stateless societies is this paper by Lowes, Nunn, Robinson and Weigel (yes, the same Robinson as in The Narrow Corridor book). In turns out that in Congo there is a set of tribes which are ethnically and culturally pretty homogeneous, except that while all of them are historically stateless, one tribe managed to establish a state. The researchers made the people from this area play different economic games and find out that people with a state are less cooperative than stateless people. This is a single study and may eventually prove to be non-reproducible, but do have a look at the paper: The methodology is pretty rigorous and the experiments are cleverly devised. Moreover, I am inclined to believe the results just because how genuinely confused the researchers seem to be. (They have done the experiment with the expectation that people with the state will be more cooperative.) The above has challenged my implicit assumption that stateless societies are in the permanent Hobbesian "warre". That they are, basically, failed states. But from the above it looks like that stateless societies aren't kept around by the failure to coordinate. In fact, they survive by actively cooperating to prevent the hierarchical structures to emerge. From that point of view, it's rather the state that is the result of coordination failure. For whatever reason the traditional mechanisms of coordination suddenly break and the resulting societal collapse is what we refer to as a "state". In should be said that given how oppressive many early states have been it's hard to blame the Tiv for wanting to avoid it. The approach, interestingly, proved useful also in the colonial era. From Wikipedia: These socio-political arrangements caused great frustration to British attempts to incorporate the population into Colonial Nigeria and establish an administration on the lower Benue. Link to original articleWelcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. Council, therefore, urges the organizers to reconsider their plan.NEC would also like to point out the various actions already taken by Federal and State Governments to address the grievances that led to the 2020 protests, including:* the disbandment of SARS;*broad police reforms;*establishment of judicial panels of inquiries to investigate allegations of human rights violations by members of the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies;* recommendations of which panels are already at various stages of implementation including the setup of Victims Compensation Funds from which several victims have received payments of sums awarded to them by the panels;*and prosecution of police personnel indicted by the panels. These are commendable actions that ought to be taken to a logical conclusion in a peaceful atmosphere.Organizers of the planned protests should explore the various channels of communication with governments at various levels to advance their positions and avert the breakdown of law and order that may result from such public protests.Credit- Startrend International
A report by Economic Confidential on annual states viability index 2020 has shown that Lagos, Nigeria's Financial Capital, with a sub-national gross domestic product in excess of $50.83 billion, is the most solvent and viable state in Nigeria year-to-date. For the fifth year running, the littoral state with aquatic resources has led in the Nigerian states' annual viability index. According to the ASVI computation, Lagos, which is by far an industrial behemoth, can pull along successfully without the monthly disbursements from the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee. But this is not the case with eight other states: Adamawa, Benue, Jigawa, Katsina, Niger, Taraba, and Yobe, described as economically insolvent and unviable, and cannot survive without the federal monthly envelope, due to their very low IGR accretion compared to their FAAC receipts.

Mr. Pius Angbo aka "Jackie Chan" of Nigeria, a journalist with Channels Television station, allegedly assaulted his wife who is a doctor. The wife cried out on social media and before we knew what was happening, the Governor of Benue state left more pressing state matters to attend to the couple. After the Governor counselled the couple, they agreed to put aside their differences and continue with their marriage. No public apology from the husband and no word on further therapy sessions to prevent future assaults. While we wish them the best, should the Governor have done more? On a lighter note, we discuss a lady who doesn't earn very much but aspired to go to a very expensive restaurant. She said this aspiration in the presence of her boyfriend and his friends and her boyfriend proceeded to mock her aspiration by sharing the details of her low salary to all present. She was obviously embarrassed and ended the relationship. Did she over-react or was her boyfriend disrespectful?
In this video, I look at the yellow fever outbreak currently affecting 5 states in Nigeria--Delta, Enugu, Bauchi, and Benue and Ebonyi. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Yellow Fever (YF) is a mosquito-borne viral disease of humans and other primates, and is currently endemic in over 43 countries in the tropical regions of Africa and The Americas. Infection with the YF virus can be asymptomatic or cause a wide spectrum of disease, from mild symptoms to severe illness with bleeding, jaundice and, ultimately, death. Over 30,000 deaths occur each year and this figure would be much higher without vaccination. Aedes aegypti, is the most important vector.
