21,216 lives have been lost in NYC. The future of our city is unknown and while the number of hospitalizations and deaths are decreasing we just aren’t in the clear. I wanted to learn more about what was happening in the frontlines and who better to learn from than Dr. Kirzner, who is double-board certified in anesthesiology and obesity medicine. 3:35 Dr. Kirzner kindly walks us through her medical school journey, specific reasons why she went into anesthesiology, and what her responsibilities entail. 13:20 We also go into her role as a specialized healthcare provider during the coronavirus pandemic in NYC. We talk about what COVID-19 does to the body and we do a quick review on what ventilators do. instagram.com/obesitymedicinedoc The pandemic is far from over but we need to try to understand things, continue to try to reach our goals and to adapt and continuosly innovate. Dr. Henao is extremely passionate about ophthalmology and she is about to complete her vitreoretinal fellowship. Naturally I got curious, which is why she is my guest on this episode. We start off by having a discussion about our backgrounds and identities as latinx women and turns out we have soo much in common. Dr. Henao then goes into a deep dive about her career path, how she was determined to get into medical school, the steps she took to match into her ophthalmology residency and her vitreoretinal fellowship. This right here is why you do not want to miss this episode. As an optometrist who wishes to inspire our younger generation to pursue careers in healthcare all her words inspired me and I hope they can inspire you too. instagram.com/mhophtho_md If you enjoyed listening to this optometry podcast that explores different opinions and fields of medicine I want to get to know you. Do you have a PCP? I don’t anymore lol. I called my doctor’s office a few months ago only to find out that they moved! So right now I’m looking and I remembered that Dr. Caraballo is a PCP whose practice runs on different model called Direct Primary Care, DPC. I wanted to learn more about it so I reached out to her for this episode. We explore the DPC model, why it’s better for doctors, patients (including those who are unable to obtain insurance) and our healthcare system. She shares with us what it means for her to be a latina in medicine and she has some inspiring words of wisdom for those of us who have ever dared to dream. Dr. Moore started optometry school when she was 27 and she shares with us inspirational advice on her unique path towards obtaining her Doctor of Optometry degree. Two main things we cover are the importance of reaching out to the schools you are interested in and on getting as much shadowing experience as you can. The time to email or DM doctors with your questions or to set up shadowing opportunities is right now. Right now is when most of us have more time than ever before to check our inboxes and to reply to you. And even if you are almost done with school, or no longer a student, hearing from women who made it can remind us of our own paths and of how blessed we are to have come as far as we have. instagram.com/dr.see.moore drseemooreod@gmail.com http://voyageatl.com/interview/meet-trailblazer-dr-candice-moore/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/newyorkeyedoc/message
It was so fun to get to talk about fine eyewear again with LA-based optician, Jennifer Centeno. I think glasses are magical and in this episode Jennifer shares with us her favorite frame lines, how she got into the eyecare industry and we talk about the importance of storytelling. instagram.com/opticianista_la https://www.opticianistala.com/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/newyorkeyedoc/message
