I walk you through the exact foods that act like internal sunglasses for your retina, the supplements with actual clinical trial data behind them, and the everyday habits that are quietly stealing your sight. If you've ever worried about macular degeneration, cataracts, or just want to keep seeing the faces of the people you love for decades to come — this episode is for you.On this episode, you'll learn: Why your dry eyes are actually a gut problem (and what you can do about it) (2:55)Which leafy greens act like built-in sunglasses for your retina (2:55)The easy snack that is one of the top foods for eye health (3:59)The only supplement with a clinical trial showing it can actually fix macular degeneration in humans 05:18)What most well-meaning people are getting dangerously wrong about zinc and copper (9:42)Which oil is a secret weapon for your retina (10:56)The 20/20/20 screen rule that could save your vision (12:13)Why THESE popular eye drops are making your eyes worse over time (12:23)How common whole grain bread may be directly attacking your cornea (13:20)Why this ancient spice may outperform Alzheimer's drugs for your brain and eyes at the same time (14:26)The free red light therapy treatment hiding in your morning routine (14:46)Why sunglasses might actually be weakening your eyes (15:39)For full show notes and transcript: https://drgundry.com/best-supplements-for-eye-healthThank you to our sponsors! In this episode of The 20/20 Podcast, Dr. Harbir Sian sits down with internationally recognized dry eye expert and ophthalmologist Dr. Laura Periman from Seattle, Washington. Rather than focusing on rigid protocols or step-by-step treatment algorithms, the conversation zooms out to explore how clinicians should think about dry eye disease in an era of rapidly evolving science.Dr. Periman explains why “dry eye” is an oversimplified label for an incredibly complex and multifactorial disease process involving inflammation, neurosensory dysfunction, pain pathways, microbiome disruption, blink mechanics, ocular surface disease, and more. She describes the field as a constantly expanding landscape where curiosity, innovation, and questioning old assumptions are essential. The discussion dives into emerging innovations in dry eye care, including molecular therapies aimed at repairing corneal tissue, targeted approaches to recurrent corneal erosion, novel pain-signaling pathways, and therapies addressing neurosensory compromise. Dr. Periman shares insights from presenting recent dry eye innovations at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, highlighting how advances in the field are reshaping our understanding of ocular surface disease. The conversation also explores personalized medicine in dry eye management. Rather than applying generic treatments, Dr. Periman advocates identifying the specific mechanistic contributors in each patient—whether that's Demodex, rosacea, incomplete blinking, inflammation, dysbiosis, blepharitis, or neurosensory dysfunction—and selecting targeted interventions accordingly. Finally, the episode touches on the growing importance of ocular surface optimization before refractive and cataract surgery. Dr. Periman discusses evidence suggesting that preoperative management with immunomodulators may improve surgical outcomes, patient satisfaction, and visual quality. She also challenges long-held beliefs about how quickly these therapies work, emphasizing the importance of revisiting old dogma as new evidence emerges. At its core, this episode is a reminder that the best clinicians remain curious, question assumptions, and continually evolve alongside the science.Key Moments1. “Dry eye isn't just dry eye.”Dr. Periman reframes dry eye as an enormous umbrella term covering multiple overlapping disease mechanisms, emphasizing the need for deeper thinking beyond traditional categories. 2. The future of treatment is molecular and personalized. The conversation explores emerging therapies targeting recurrent corneal erosion, connexin signaling, pain pathways, and tissue repair—pointing toward increasingly precise, individualized care. 3. Better surgical outcomes may start weeks before surgery.Dr. Periman discusses evidence supporting pre-treatment of ocular surface inflammation prior to refractive and cataract procedures, potentially improving outcomes and patient satisfaction. Today is a day for celebration and a little bit of "I told you so." We finally have a resolution in the saga of the Eugene Emergency Physicians (EEP). Just as final arguments were about to begin, PeaceHealth completely rescinded its contract with Apollo MD and restored it to the local doctors who have served the community for 35 years. I'm breaking down the federal judge's scathing remarks, including some casual accusations of perjury against corporate leadership, and why this victory proves that Oregon's new corporate practice of medicine law actually works. Later, I'm putting on my clinical hat to give you the "Glaucomflecken Dry Eye Regimen." I'm talking to you like a patient who's tired of blurry vision and gritty eyes: we're cutting through the marketing noise to discuss why hot compresses and baby shampoo are often better than expensive in-office procedures. We'll cover the new drops on the market, the danger of generic recalls, and why you should steer clear of anything labeled "homeopathic." Takeaways: The EEP Victory: How a courageous group of local doctors defeated a corporate giant and what this means for physician autonomy nationwide. The Perjury Warning: Why a federal judge suggested that corporate executives were "clearly lying under oath" during the PeaceHealth trial. The 2029 Deadline: Why every medical practice in Oregon must be 100% physician-owned within three years or face legal oblivion. MGD vs. Tears: Understanding the difference between oil gland dysfunction and aqueous deficiency, and why no single drop can fix both. The Generic Risk: Why Will recommends sticking to brand-name lubricants for your eyes to avoid the history of contamination seen in some generic and homeopathic brands. Dry, gritty, or burning eyes don't have to be your “new normal.” We take a deep, practical look at hyaluronic acid—what it is, why your eyes love it, and how to use it—to bring real-world relief for dryness, irritation, and even contact lens discomfort. Drawing on decades of integrative eye care, we lay out clear steps for choosing the right eye drop strength, pairing topical relief with smart supplementation, and building meals that support your tear film and the vitreous. We break down the science in plain language: hyaluronic acid binds up to 1,000 times its weight in water, stabilizes the tear film, cushions the ocular surface, and helps transport nutrients to the cornea and retina. You'll hear when to reach for 0.1% HA drops for mild dryness versus 0.4% for more severe symptoms, plus how 100–200 mg of oral HA can support systemic hydration across eyes, skin, and joints. If floaters or posterior vitreous detachment are on your mind, we explain why bone broth is a direct source of HA and collagen, and how plant-based options—soy, leafy greens, root vegetables, and citrus—can boost your body's own HA production.Food lovers and minimalists alike will find something to try today: simmered bone broth for 12–48 hours to extract HA, or a vegetarian miso broth with tofu, turmeric, garlic, and ginger for an anti-inflammatory lift. We also touch on simple add-ons like almonds for vitamin E and magnesium to support skin around the eyes and tear quality. By the end, you'll have a concise plan to hydrate your eyes, ease irritation, and protect long-term vision health with steps that fit your routine. If this podcast helps you see and feel better, follow the show, share it with someone who struggles with dry eyes, and leave a quick review so more listeners can find these natural eye care strategies. For more information, visit naturaleycare.com and drgrossman2020.comOur email address is info@naturaleycare.comIf you have any questions, call us at 845 475 4158.

If you've ever felt confident diagnosing dry eye… but frustrated by inconsistent follow-through, stalled treatment plans, or patients who quietly disappear, this episode will feel like a reset. In this conversation, Dr. Steve Vargo sits down with Dr. Crystal Brimer, founder of Dry Eye Institute, to unpack why so many doctors stay stuck in “dabble mode” with dry eye—and what it actually takes to turn it into a meaningful, sustainable specialty. Dr. Brimer shares the mindset shift that changed everything for her practice, the non-negotiable systems that create consistency even in busy offices, and why most dry eye failures have far less to do with patients—and far more to do with leadership, flow, and clarity. You'll hear how screening every patient changes outcomes, why one well-trained “dry eye ambassador” can transform team buy-in, and how clear communication—grounded in objective findings, not pressure—dramatically improves patient trust and follow-through. This isn't about adding another device or chasing the next trend. It's about building a process that works in real life, with real staff, and real patients who are overwhelmed. If you know dry eye could be a game-changer in your practice—but something keeps breaking down—this conversation will help you see exactly where, and what to do next.

Dr. Lange recommends Fortifeye Focus for anyone who spends extended time on computers or digital devices, as these carotenoids help protect the macula from blue-light damage. Both doctors highlighted what Dr. Lange described as a missing nutrient in today’s Standard American Diet—black currant seed oil. Unlike most oils, black currant seed oil naturally contains omega-6 (GLA), omega-3 (ALA), and omega-9 fatty acids, making it a uniquely balanced essential fat source. Dr. Lange explained that GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) is particularly lacking in modern diets and plays a key role in controlling inflammation, supporting dry eye, skin health, joint comfort, and overall cellular function. Fortifeye Black Currant Seed Oil / GLA was discussed as an effective way to restore this critical fatty acid balance. The show also addressed nutrition strategies for constipation, discussed eye floaters and warning signs to be aware of, and offered practical guidance for improving overall systemic and ocular health. Dr. Lange took time to express gratitude to several mentors from Louisiana who helped shape his career, including Dr. Richard K. Lange (his father), Dr. Charlie Glazer of St. Charles Vision, and Dr. Steve Brint of Eye Surgery Center of Louisiana. The program concluded with an in-depth segment on dry eye disease, focusing on two advanced technologies designed for more resistant cases—Lumenis OptiLight and OptiLift, available exclusively at the Lange Eye Institute. Dr. Summerton also discussed the benefits of appropriate light exposure for memory, energy, and concentration, while emphasizing the importance of limiting digital screen time at night to support restorative sleep. #AskTheDr #AskTheDoctor #DrMichaelLange #DrSusanSummerton #NutritionMatters #EyeHealth #MacularHealth #BlueLightProtection #Carotenoids #Lutein #Zeaxanthin #DryEyeRelief #GLA #BlackCurrantSeedOil #AntiInflammatory #FunctionalNutrition #IntegrativeEyeCare #LumenisOptiLight #LumenisOptiLift #LangeEyeInstitutSupport the show: https://www.drmichaellange.com/category/ask-the-doctor/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today’s episode of Ask the Doctor was hosted by Dr. Michael Lange and Dr. Susan Summerton. Ask the Doctor is the longest-running live, syndicated medical talk show in the United States, broadcasting coast-to-coast for over 33 years. We opened the show discussing the massive global whey protein shortage. Whey protein is extremely difficult to obtain worldwide due to increased demand from patients using GLP-1 receptor drugs, who are being advised to consume higher protein intake to prevent muscle loss. In addition, major corporations such as Starbucks and Dunkin’ have purchased large quantities of whey protein for functional and sports drinks. Because of this shortage, Fortifeye Fit Pro is currently on backorder, though other Fortifeye whey protein products remain available, and we are actively working to secure supply. We then discussed black currant seed oil and GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) and why GLA may be a missing fatty acid in the modern diet. Fortifeye now offers Black Currant Seed Oil + GLA in a 90-count bottle. GLA helps support dry eye by stimulating Series-1 prostaglandins, which play an important role in controlling inflammation. Dr. Lange reviewed his clinical experience using Fortifeye Advanced Dry Eye Therapy, which combines: • Fortifeye Super Omega (RTG-form omega-3) • Fortifeye Focus • Fortifeye Black Currant Seed Oil + GLA This three-supplement combination has been very effective in helping reduce dry eye symptoms and improve overall ocular comfort. We also discussed the end of the BOGO on Fortifeye Vegan Super Protein. While the BOGO promotion has ended, this remains one of the top vegan proteins on the market, offering an amino acid profile comparable to whey protein, outstanding taste, and three delicious flavors. In addition, we covered exciting new research on carotenoids including lutein, zeaxanthin, and astaxanthin. These nutrients may help lower triglycerides and cholesterol, support brain health and mood, and may even help with depression. These carotenoids are beneficial for children and adults, supporting not only eye health but systemic and cognitive health as well. All three carotenoids are found together in Fortifeye Focus. We explained what photobiomodulation therapy (PBM) is and how it works. PBM uses specific wavelengths of low-level red and near-infrared light to stimulate mitochondrial function, increase cellular energy (ATP), improve circulation, and reduce inflammation. As more companies bring this technology to market, increased competition is expected to drive costs down, making this promising therapy more accessible to patients. Dr. Lange and Dr. Summerton shared their enthusiasm for photobiomodulation therapy as a supportive treatment option for macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and dry eye disease. Dr. Kane has noted that when diet and supplementation are optimized, this technology may work even more effectively, reinforcing the importance of combining advanced technology with proper nutrition. Dr. Summerton also weighed in on chelation therapy, explaining how reducing toxic metal burden and oxidative stress may further support cellular health, circulation, and inflammation control. When used appropriately and combined with nutrition and lifestyle optimization, chelation therapy may enhance overall systemic and ocular health. An important discussion followed on the often-overlooked connection between dry eye disease and atrial fibrillation (AFib). Dr. Lange explained that many patients with both conditions commonly share deficiencies in: • Magnesium • Potassium • Sodium chloride • Omega-3 fatty acids • Hydration These deficiencies may contribute to inflammation, nerve dysfunction, poor tear quality, impaired circulation, and cardiac rhythm instability.

Many people with headaches and migraines don't realize their eyes may be contributing to symptoms. In this episode, Dr. Taves speaks with optometrist and dry eye specialist Dr. Pam Theriot about the growing connection between screen time, dry eye disease, eye strain, and headache symptoms. Dr. Theriot explains how prolonged screen use reduces blink rate dramatically—from about 21 blinks per minute to around 7—which prevents the eyelids from releasing oils that protect the eye's tear film. Over time, this can lead to chronic dry eye disease, fluctuating vision, and discomfort that may feel like pressure or pain behind the eyes. The conversation also highlights why dry eye disease is affecting younger patients than ever, how workstation setup impacts eye strain, and practical daily habits to protect long-term eye and head health. Dr. Theriot shares actionable strategies including the 20-20-20 rule, screen positioning tips, and a simple at-home test to check for dryness. If you struggle with headaches, eye strain, or migraines—especially in a screen-heavy lifestyle—this episode offers a holistic, preventative approach to improving both eye comfort and overall wellness. Novera: Headache Center

More than half of U.S. adults experience dry eye symptoms, but only a small fraction have received a formal diagnosis or treatment Common symptoms include burning, stinging, gritty sensations, blurred vision, and eye fatigue, often worse at night or with prolonged screen use Environmental and lifestyle factors — including digital device use, indoor HVAC, contact lenses, and certain medications — are major drivers of dry eye disease Remedies range from simple lifestyle changes and home routines (blink breaks, warm compresses, humidifiers) to over-the-counter drops, prescription medications, and device therapies Ignoring persistent symptoms increases the risk of corneal damage, chronic inflammation, and permanent vision changes, making professional evaluation necessary
